My Grandmother is Gladys Gail Hixson listed on this site. This is the first time I have seen this information. It is impressive to see all of the information you have compiled. One correction I'd like to make on the spelling of her oldest daughter's name, Malinda Mae Maffit Pasternak. She was named after her Grandmother. My Mother is Betty Jane Maffit Bowman. I assume I must be related to the writer of this information. I don't know if I can add anything to your information, but contact me if you think so.

Thank you for the response to my request concerning the name of David Hixson, Jrs children. I understand in your reply that the name of David Hixson,Srs children were stated in Agness Hixson's probate record. Did the list of children for David Hixson,Jr come from David or Jane's probate record?

The list of children for David Hixson,Jr does not entirely match the profile for the Federal Census years of 1820, 1830 and 1840. There are two daughters missing that were represented through these years. These two daughters would be older or about the same age as Elizabeth born in 1817.

The son David stated in your list as born in 1828 also does not fit the profile. It appears in Census records the David married to Susannah Kurtz was born about 1837. On the 1840 Census, David Hixson Jrs youngest son was in the age 5 to 10 category and not in the under age 5 category if he was the David born in 1838 married to Susannah Kurtz.

William Foster Hixson married to Mary Ann Orwig was born in 1830 and died in 1902.

Betty L. (Hough) Hixson,age. 90, born,in East Huntingdon Township,daughter of ,Ernest and Effie Strohm Hough,

Betty L. Hixson
Scottdale

Betty L. (Hough) Hixson, 90,
of Scottdale (East Huntingdon Township),
passed away Friday, May 27, 2011,
at the family farm, with her children at her side. Betty was born July 13, 1920, in East Huntingdon Township, a daughter of the late Ernest and Effie Strohm Hough, who passed away in October 1975 and October 1991, respectively. She married Kenneth Hixson on Jan. 2, 1941, and he passed away Aug. 2, 2010. Betty was loved so much by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a longtime member of Center Bethel Church of God in Alverton and a member of the Ladies Sunday School Class, Bible Class and Missionary Society. Betty was also a graduate of East Huntingdon High School with the Class of 1938. Her greatest joy was working on the family farm, milking cows, raising chickens, mowing grass, planting her vegetable and flower gardens, always planting extra to share with others. Betty was a wonderful cook; there was always a place at her table for anyone who visited. If you were lucky, she would have made one of her delicious coconut creme pies to share. Betty lived a full and happy life and is loved and will be missed by many, especially by her family. Betty was the loving mother of her four children, Ronald L. Hixson and his wife, Carole, of Scottdale, Peggy J. Baker and her husband, Robert, of Alverton, Shirley J. Beistel and her husband, Butch, of Scottdale, and Jerry L. Hixson and his wife, Barbara, of Scottdale. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Robin Roth and husband Tim, Kimberly Semon and husband Chris, Kevin Beistel and wife Beth, Kurt Beistel and wife Stacey, Jason Baker and wife Kori, Amy Jo Lashinsky and husband Adam, Ashley Hixson, Andrea Hixson and Andrew Hixson; 10 great-grandchildren, Tyler, Jenna and Emily Roth, Riley and Ryan Beistel, Kyle Cohen, Jacob and Caden Beistel, and Jesse and Jon Christner; a sister, Kathryn Smith, of Smithton; a brother, Gerald Hough and his wife, Janet, of Ocala, Fla.;
and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents
and husband,
she was preceded in death by a sister, Doris P. Billheimer, on April 22, 2011; and two brothers, J.C. Hough and Robert Hough. Special thanks to her wonderful caregivers, Esther, Coleen, Sandy, Ellen and Dolly, and Excela Health Hospice. Personalized arrangements are under the professional supervision of the ROBERT B. FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME, 105 Spring St., Scottdale, Family and friends will be received from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday with Pastor Lee Kline officiating. Graveside committal service and interment will follow in Alverton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Center Bethel Church of God, P.O. Box 114, Alverton, PA 15612.
(Pennsylvania - Pittsburgh Tribune)

Center Bethel Church of God."
I too am beginning a search for Hixson history. My father's maternal grandparents were George Washington Hixson (b 1862-1847)and Mary Harriet Hickerson Hixson. They lived on Main Street in Manassas, Virginia (Prince William County). He was an undertaker, wheelwright, furniture maker, blacksmith, etc. He was a very prominent citizen of Manassas, donating the land to the town for the town hall. The home he built in Manassas after he returned from the Civil War still stands. Family tradition tells he was one of Mosby's Rangers and captured, spending most of the war in a Northern prison.

My grandfather married Lucy Leachman Hixson, daughter of George Washington Hixson and Mary Harriet Hickerson Hixson.

Isaiah b. 1731
Mr. David Hixson was born January 7, 1800, in South Huntingdon township, this county. The house in which he was born stood within fifty yards of the one in which he died. He was the son of Joseph and Catherine (Acors) Hixson. His father like himself, was a farmer and in his early days followed that calling near Trenton, Mercer county, New Jersey. Somewhat over a century ago his parents emigrated from Trenton to this county, and settled on a farm about two miles southeast of Mendon and within three miles from his last home. His parents came from the east on horse-back and carried their possessions in pack-saddles. They stayed at this place only a short time when they moved to the place where the subject of this sketch was born. This place was then a vast forest and there David Hixson spent his youth felling trees, clearing the land, tilling the soil and undergoing the hardships incident ot the early settlers and their families struggling in a new coutry to maintain themselves and establish homes. During this period he spent some of his winter months in attending a subscription school near his home known as the 'Old Beech School house'. This was one of the first school houses built in this county and Mr. Hixson was one of the first to attend it ninety years ago and always was commended for his good behavior, his manly disposition and his diligence at school. From youth up his disposition was to work and when he was not busy with his duties he could be seen at the woodpile and always had plenty of wood chopped for the old fashioned fireplace. He never was found seeking after frivolous amusements or giving himself up to mere idleness as many do but lived a quite, honest and steady life engaged in the duties of useful calling. He was always stematic as well as industrious and watchful of his health. Following the injunction of being temperate in all things he was enabled to lived the long and useful life he did. In these respects as well in his high moral character he is an example worthy of our imitation.
On August 15th, 1844 he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Hough of his own neighborhood, who was his loving companion and helpmate up to his death and still survives him. To them were born ten children of which nine are living. They are all farmers and have married farmers sons and daughters. They are as follows: Francis M. Hixson, of Chambersburg, O., J.C. Hixson, Macbeth, PA., Mary Jane Culler, Scottdale Pa, Catharine Hodge, Reagantown, Pa., Joseph Hixson, Fayette county, James Hixson, Lizzie Poole, both of South Huntingdon township, this county, David Hixson Broadford, Pa., Maggie Rosen, East Huntingdon Tosnwhip, and Robert Hixson deceased. The number of grandchildren are fifty-three, and that of great grandchildren seven. Mr. Hixson and his faithful wife showed their perseverance in the calling which they choose to follow, besides faithfully fulfilling their obligations to their large family, every one of who are filling an honored place in the world. He loved to tell of the old times in his boyhood days and could remember long before anything was known about railroads in the country. Some of his fondest recollections wer of the old Beech School and the long cabin with its old fashinged fire-place in which he was born. A part of the chimney wall and the stump of the sycamore tree that stood beside this cabin still remain to mark the spot where it stood a century ago. The stump of the beech tree that stood beside the school-house where he spent his school days still remains, amd Mr. Hixson enjoyed being the oldest of persons remaining of the original class and was the oldest present at the Hixson school reunion which took place on August 31st, 1895, where his school days were vividly portrayed in a sketch composed expressly for the occasion.
In politics Mr. Hixson was an ardent Democrat and was always present at the polls on election to cast his vote, and never was challenged for all men knew his taxes were paid.
His life was an active one and he was never guilty of keeping a constant supply of wood for the kitchen fire and only a few days before his death he chopped and caried in a good quantity and told his beloved wife that was the last wood he would ever chop, and sure enough it was.
The pitying heart that felt for human woe,
The dauntless heart that feared no human pride.
The friend of man, to vice alone a foe;
Fore even his failings leaned to virtue's side.
On Friday morning at 8 o'clock, having fought the good fight and nobly finised his course, the death angel enetered and bore his spirit away to its final reward. The toils are all over, the service rendered, the evening has passed and the morning dawned of a day unending.
The large concours of people, of all denominations, who gathered at the Wesley chapel, M.E. church, on Sunday morning, where he had been a constant member for some time, showed the profound respect and affection of the entire community for the honored dead. The funeral serviced, rendered by Rev. George W. Byrnes, of Alverton, was very appropriate and impressive, after which interment took place in the chapel cemetery. May the grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ be multiplied to this family abundantly in this great sorrow and may each work on and some tomorrow awake in his likeness with unbroken links in the family chain. At the home coming God shall wipe away all tears, and pain and spearation shall be forever ended.
Grandpap's hairs were very gray,
And Grandpap's walks were slow.
He loved to sit in his easy chair
And tell of the times of long ago.
Grandpap's hand was thin and weak
It had worked hard all his days;
A strong right and honest hand
That has won all good men's praise.
Grandpap's eyes were growing dim
They had looked on sorrow and death;
But the love light never went out of them,
Nor the courage and the faith.
Grandpap's spirit has passed away,
But he leaves a blessing behind;
Good he lived, and good night fought,
True heart and honest mind."
Catherine Hixson of East Huntingdon Township, Westmoreland County, PA
Added by Ken0381 on 2 May 2008
Catherine Hixson left a very impressive will, dated February 05, 1844. Here Catherine left her mark. The actual will reads:
"The Last Will and Testament of Catheriene Hixson of South Huntingdon Township, Westmoreland County
In the Name of God Amen I Catherine Hixson Considering the uncertainty of this mortal Life and being of Sound Mind and memory blessed be God for the Same Do make and Publish this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following that is to Say First I Give to my Son David Hixson all of my Freehold Estate whatsoever of and in all those mssuages or Tennements with the appurtenances Situate in South Huntindgon Township County above Said and Lastly as to my residue and remainder of my Personal Property goods and Chattels of what kind and nature soever I Give and bequeath the Same to my Two Sons David Hixson and Abraham Hixon to be Divided half and half Equally Partie and Divided among them Share and Share alike and to my Son Mosis Hixson Aron Hixsons Children Catherine Joseph Aron I give and bequeath one Dollar Each to be Paid in one year after my Death by my Executors William Foster whome I apoint to Cary out this my Last Will and Testament as my Sole Executor and hereby revoking all former Wills made by me in Witness Whareof I have hereunto Set my hand Seal this 5th Day of February in the year of our Lord 1844.
Catherine Hixon"
A Deposition was taken from Jesse Beaumont of Wooster, Wayne County, Ohio, where he stated that he witnessed Catherine making her mark, that she acknowledged that this was her Last Will and Testament, and that she was of sound mind. This Deposition is dated November 10, 1849.
David Hixson of East Huntingdon Township, Westmoreland County, PA
Added by Ken0381 on 1 May 2008
A short obituary for David Hixson is found in the March 25, 1896 edition of The Pennsylvania Argus of Greensburg. This was found on microfilm at the State Library in Harrisburg. This reads as follows:
"At the extreme age of 96 years, David Hixon [sic] died Friday at his home in South Huntingdon Township. He had lived on the same farm since his birth."
An incredible obituary came to this researcher. This obituary is a gold mine of genealogical data and has great information on the life of the Hixson family, who were early settlers in Westmoreland County. This obituary was transcribed from an unknown newspaper, and had a photocopy of the first part of this obituary. This photocopy of the original obituary has the date from the newpaper, March 27, 1896, an edition number-Number 6, and part of the name of the newspaper in very bold type at the top of the copy. The only remaining part of the name of the paper reads "..n Register". This researcher could find no newspaper that could match this clipping (such as 'Huntingdon Register' or something like that) at the State Library. In the obituary, it does state that 'He was the oldest person in the Township..." which makes the researcher feel that this was a local newspaper.
This obituary reads as follows:
DAVID HIXSON DEAD
--------
A LONG AND USEFUL LIFE ENDED. A PIONEER GONE
--------
He Was The Oldest Person In This Township, Being 96 Years Old.
--------
Mr. David Hixson quietly passed away at his residence near Grandview at 8 o'clock last Friday morning. He was 96 years 2 months and 13 days old. Funeral services were held in Wesley chapel M.E. Church Sunday morning at 10:30 A.M.
Oh sleep divine, surcease of pain,
The truce of God with care and strife.
Thy sweet forgetting wh can gain
Has plucked the very flower of life.
But at last by thee embraced,
We find at length how sweet, serene.
Their rest who all life's acts out-played,
Wait at God's hands the next scene.
By the death of this aged and honored citizen there has been removed from our midst a great and noble man. His long, quiet and peaceful life as a farmer and loyal citizen, his gentleness and courtesy to his neighbors and followmen, his loyalty to truth and honesty and zealous devotion to the duties of his calling has made him to be honored, respected and loved by all that knew him.

Isaiah b. 1731
The friend of man, to vice alone a foe;
It had worked hard all his days;
A strong right and honest hand
That has won all good men's praise.
Grandpap's eyes were growing dim
They had looked on sorrow and death;
But the love light never went out of them,
Nor the courage and the faith.
Grandpap's spirit has passed away,
But he leaves a blessing behind;

Isaiah b. 1731
The friend of man, to vice alone a foe;
It had worked hard all his days;
A strong right and honest hand
That has won all good men's praise.
Grandpap's eyes were growing dim
They had looked on sorrow and death;
But the love light never went out of them,
Nor the courage and the faith.
Grandpap's spirit has passed away,
But he leaves a blessing behind;

Re: Hickson/Hixson/Hixon DNA Project

This is a great time to join a DNA project! Anyone interested, please write to me and I'll tell you about a special opportunity.

The Hickson/Hixson/Hixon DNA Project is making progress toward identifying some lines with these surnames.

The project is open to anyone whose paternal line (father's father's father etc.) had the name Hickson, Hixson, or Hixon. These men can take a Y-DNA test. Women (or men whose paternal line is not eligible) would need to recruit a male relative whose paternal line is eligible.

The web site is http://www.familytreedna.com/public/HicksonHixsonHixon/
People who want to join can join via this site. Please include some information about your line including the name, dates, location, and spouse of your earliest Hickson/Hixson/Hixon ancestor. If you are not sure or have other questions about the project, please send me email.

The goal of the project is to compare the Y-DNA of different lines, in order to estimate how closely they may be related and to learn about their origins.

If you have questions about DNA testing, look at http://www.familytreedna.com/faq.html
You might also want to join the DNA-NEWBIE mailing list at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DNA-NEWBIE/

Looking forward to hearing from potential participants!
Carol Botteron botteron@alum.mit.edu
