Hi there thank you so much for the link. This is definitely my grandmother Mary, all of the info matches perfectly. One oddity was that they mentioned her as only having two daughters, Maureen and another we did not know about Catherine in the obit that you have. There was no mention of her and Herbert's other 3 daughters that were all in foster care at the time of her death. Do you mind me asking how you found this info about her?

Any info or a shove in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

There was an old message board post from 2002 from a Patricia born in 1938 whose mother was Mary Hoar from Springfield, MA but that user now seems inactive.
I'm trying to find information on THomas Hoar who married an Anna/ANnie Gaffney Dowdell sometime between 1877 and 1889. They apparently had a son named James D. Hoar. I can't locate anything on James after the 1900 Census when he, Anna and her son James Dowdell lived on Greenway Ave. James D. Hoar was born @1884.

Thanks, additional sources, particularly ones which discuss the quality of references, are always useful. One bit of personal preference is that I have seen that most Google books cannot be searched electronically unless one is online. The sources at archive.org and through familysearch.org are searchable offline. Just my personal preference.

thanks a bunch....I also found a discussion in a commemorative paper/discussion that addresses the confusion/conflicting accounts. The name of the book is Bi-Centennial of Old Dunstable by Hon. S.T. Worcester, et al. It can be found on Google Books for free. It basically weeds through the Concord vital records to demonstrate that Daniel Hoar married the Sarah Jones that was the daughter of John Jones and Sarah Farwell.

I have a question which I can't seem to find a good answer to. Lt. Daniel Hoar married Sarah Jones the daughter of John Jones and Sarah.....who? I've seen Sarah Temple listed in Shattuck's history, etc. and I have seen others that say she was the daughter of John Jones and Sarah Farwell. Which is it and how did you arrive at the answer?

Thanks,

Dave Michnal

My name is Walter Crean and I am researching the infamous Salem witchcraft trials, but from agenealogical (or family tree) perspective. I am searching for information on William Hoar of Salem, Massachusetts, his wife Dorcas (Galley) Hoar, and their children. I know that they had a daughter Annis (Hoar) King, who married a Samuel King, also of Salem, and that they had children. Any and all information can be emailed to me at my Yahoo address,
creanaugusta@yahoo.com; thanks.

P.S.--I know that Dorcas (Galley) Hoar had a sister, Elizabeth (Galley) Trask Giles, who married first to Osmund Trask and second to John Giles.

I am a descendent of John Graves of Concord MA and my connection is through Benjamin Graves and Mary Hoar. I saw a previous post from someone having visited a cemetery in Concord and having some photos of Hoar family members buried there. If anyone has these photos I would live to see them. I can be reached at seberle59@hotmail.com Thanks

Re: John Hoar of Concord Mass.

“Three Hundred Colonial Ancestors” by F. Phelps Leach and Elizabeth May Leach Rixford was published in 1934, mentioning Alice Lisle Hoar on pp. 167 and 208.

But George Frisbie Hoar refers to a Puritan calling John Hoar’s wife Alice Lisle as early as the 1700s. Hoar’s Autobiography of Seventy Years, vol. 2 (1903), page 221: “During the summer I paid a visit to Moyle’s Court, near Southampton, formerly owned by Lady Alice Lisle, whose daughter married Leonard Hoar, President of Harvard College. Leonard Hoar was the brother of my ancestor, John Hoar of Concord, and the son of Charles Hoar, Sheriff of Gloucester. There is a statement in an old account of some Puritan worthies that I have seen, to the effect that John …
(p. 222:)
… Hoar and Leonard married sisters. If that be true, John Hoar’s wife, Alice, was a daughter and namesake of Lady Alice Lisle. Although I should like to believe it, I am afraid that the claim cannot be made good.”

He did not state any evidence to the contrary, giving the impression that his opinion is based solely on an absence of proof to back up the statement rather than any evidence contradicting it.

It certainly would be interesting to read the “old account of some Puritan worthies” referred to. The reference by George Frisbie Hoar gives the impression he did not have a copy of the statement at hand, but still one wonders if the statement could be found in his papers might be preserved in an archives somewhere.

I believe I have seen a similar reference in a 19th century publication to Leonard and John Hoar marrying sisters but can’t put my hands on it.

Genealogical Memoirs Relating to the families of the State of Massachusetts Wm Richard Cutter & Wm Frederick Adams (1910), Vol. 1, p. 620, states that Leonard and John Hoar married sisters, as does New England Families by Wm Richard Cutter (1914), vol 4, p. 1732.

I suspect that the statement was in one of the many biographical sketches published at Harvard on Leonard Hoar or John Hoar, but from G.F. Hoar’s autobiography, it would seem to be one of the very early biographies.
I am looking for any information on William S Hoar(1872-1928) who married Emily H Hodge (1888-1961). He came to Butte, MT to work in the mines. The family story is that he came from England. Parents? He had at least one brother and a sister that also moved to and lived in the Butte area. An aunt remembers calling the sister "Aunt Neat". (nickaname for Nita, Anita, ect. perhaps?)

Hoar DNA Project

My great-great grandmother was Sarah Benjamin (Horr) Hall (1837-1889), daughter of John Horr (1805-1863), son of Josiah Hoar/ Horr (1775-abt 1826), son of Jonathan Hoar (1747-1813), son of Josiah Hoar (1717-1779), son of John Hoar (1678-1764), son of Daniel Hoar (ca 1650-?), son of John Hoar (1622-1704), son of Charles Hoar (d 1638), son of Charle Hoar. This family was from Massachusetts & during the 1700s lived around Sudbury, MA.

Anyhow, I know there are several Hoar, Hoare, & Horr families in New England and elsewhere. I have created a DNA project through Family Tree DNA for this family. For those interested, use the following link:

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Hoar/default.aspx

Timothy Peterman

Hi Megan,
Thank you so much for your posting. I gather this Zephaniah is my gg grandfather (Matthew's) brother. Zephaniah married Annie Zeuriah Hammond in Hampshire and emigrated out to NZ and settled in Masterton. My Matthew married Susan Rutter in Hampshire and they emigrated out to NZ also and settled in Masterton.
As a kid in the 60's my sister and I used to go to watch my dad play cricket in Queen Elizabeth Park in Masterton and Sue and I were forever sneaking over to the cemetery over the fence and go and see Zephaniah and Annies graves in the Pioneer section of the cemetery.
I look forward to hearing back from you and hopefully we can swap some notes on our lovely family. Who is it that you descend from as I do not think I have a Megan on my tree.
It is abit of a coincidence that you have married a man with the surname of Church as Kate Elizabeth Hoar (Matthew's daughter) married Alfred Church. As far as I know he came from somewhere in England. I will go and have a look before you contact me again.
I am so looking forward to hearing from you and my personal email is raymar@xtra.co.nz.
Kindest Regards
Marilyn Parker
Whitianga NZ

He was an amazing man (form the diary). I'd love to hear from anyone who has any further info on our family.
We thought it quite ampt as my husband is English and i a Kiwi. Our Zephaniah had a very difficult start to life and only had a 20% chance of living, in which he deffidedc the odds and is the cutest litte toddler.

It would be great to hear your story

Megan & Richard Church (Wilson)

Hi. This may not be of great value to you. I am NOT (I don't think) related to CEPHAS Whitney; my relation is ARTHUR CEPHAS Whitney, and below is the outline of that relationship. You might notice that there is a CEPHAS Hoar, son of John Sherman Hoar who married Bestsy Barker, but that name was not 'Whitney'. I also have a "Whitney" site on MyHeritage.com that goes into much greater detail. In any event, some of my family (including Arthur Cephas) changed their names--in 1872-1890--to their mother's (Lydia Parker Whitney) name from the father's (John Sherman Hoar; died of typhoid) name (Hoar). You will see the connection in the outline below. I am Harry E. Whitney. I am the g-g-granddaughter of William Henry Whitney, older brother of Cephas. I am trying to fit pieces together about Cephas...he married Caroline Penny in 1890 in NY...had a daughter or adopted a daughter named Hilda (?). Could you fill me in on your relation to him? If you would like info on his parents, brother and sisters, I can do that.

The only link I can help you with is Charles Hoar 1826-1908 and his father John Hoar 1786-1855. The family lived in Petersfield, Hampshire ('The Square') as Saddlers. It was quite a big extended family. I think John Hoar could possibly have married Pricilla Atkins - so there may be a connection there?
You could check out this website:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~buriton/Ma...
I found so many christening records here for my family.
Good luck!

I am searching for information on accused witch Dorcas (Galley) Hoar who was set to die with Mary (Towne) Easty, Alice (Corey?) Parker, Ann (mnu) Greenslade Pudeator, Martha (Penoyer) Rich Corey, Margaret (Stevenson) Scott, Wilmott (mnu) Redd, Mary (Ayer) Parker, and Samuel Wardwell. What I know of her is that she was 60 years old at the time of the Salem witch trials, was the widow of William Hoar, and has one daughter Annis. I also know that she has a sister Elizabeth (Galley) Trask Giles [she m/1 Osmund Trask, then m/2 John Giles]. What I need is information on her and Elizabeth's parents as well as on any of her and her late husband William Hoar's children other than their daughter Annis. Any and all information can be sent to my email address on Yahoo!, creanaugusts@yahoo.com; thanks.

Hi Francis,
Thank you for contacting me. My line is from George Hoar b c1807. I cannot find any birth reference for him, but he married Esther Reeves in 1827 in Blendworth/Catherington and they had 17 children. George died c1864 and Esther lived until the new century.

I cannot find any information in regard to George, who is parents were, who his siblings were, etc. If you have heard of our George I would dearly love to hear from you and hopefully I can continue my search.

I am off to Australia on holiday on the 28th of this month and will be returning to NZ during the 1st week of April. I will get back to you on my return if you do get back to me.

Maybe George is a sibling of your John!!!!

Kind Regards,
Marilyn Parker
NZ
