Hi Kay,
I'm a bit new to the message board end of Ancestry and just discovered your post. I realize it is 12 years old, but in case you are still interested, I am the ggrandson of James's brother Joseph Hocking who ended up in Colorado, first in Nevadaville. About 1890 he moved his family to Boulder where he lived until his death in 1908. I don't know much about James, except that I posted his death certificate on Ancestry and have quite a bit more info on Joseph's part of the family. If I can be of any help, please let me know.
John Hocking
jrhocking21@gmail.com

Your great great grandmother's name was Martha Monteith and she andd her husband met aboard ship on the way to South Africa where he was going to work in the gold mines.

Please email me direct so I can give you myphone number.
you bet that my great grand dad! He was the Sergent in Hibbing and my grand father and his brother Tommy worked for him for many years. My grand dad nick name was Kit, because they said he was handy as a tool kit. Lol, anyway if you have any photos or info I would love to hear about it. I have traced the Hocking tree back all the way to Cornwell England where most of our familly is from and had been for hundreds of years. The reason the were up in Hibbing was Major took a job up there because the familly was tin miners and Hibbing was a booming iron ore town. Iron ore is used to make tachonite. You need tachonite to make steel... Anyway the family had a lot of experience mining tin so moving up to Minnesota was a natural progression. Cant want to hear from yea.

Annie Hocking Newton daughter of Bessie Hocking

I am trying to get a better understanding of the seemingly complex life of one Annie Hocking Newton b.1895 to mother Bessie Newton (nee Hocking) b.1865 of St Just Cornwall.
Annie's parents Bessie and James Newton had 7 children inc. Annie who all seem to have kept Hocking as a middle name on some censuses. Mostly the family appears in censuses in Devonport or St Just, but Annie was born between censuses in Johannesburg South Africa, while her brother Albert, who is 2 years older was born in South Dakota USA. They don't appear to be emigrating just perhaps drawn by work (assuming James is a Miner). The fact that annies mother ends up running an inn in East Stonehouse in the same street that the Titanic victim Hockings lived is curious.
Annie Married my Great Uncle Albert Weller just before he was killed in the Battle of Jutland and went on to marry a Thomas Shakerley, having at least 2 kids and running a greengrocers in East Stonehouse in the 1940's.
If anyone recognises this branch of the Hocking family and has any light to shed I would be Very interested. or if anyone knows of the Hocking Newton St Just connection.
Thank you.

Our Hocking branch lived in Devonport,Stoke Dameral, Devon near Plymouth, and also lived in Merryfield (or Maryfield), St. Germain, Cornwall, near Torpoint. They were painters and house decorators employed at Anthony House, near Torpoint, Cornwall. Later they ran a fruit, flower and confectioner's shop in Devonport, Devon.

One of my grandfather's brothers was named Ernest. They are all listed as either painters or confectioners in the trade directories. You may want to check the trade directories to find your Earnest. Since you have middle names, that will help narrow your search. Birth records and census records sometimes display middle names. You just have to take a stab at the general timeline. Probably 99% of all of the Hocking surname come from Cornwall. There is a Hocking society online.

Information so far, parents of Edward are Samuel Warren Hocking b 1829 Madron, Cornwall and Mary Hane Kingston Stevens b 1833. Edward was baptised in the Oct quarter of 1851 in Penzance, Cornwall. Died 6 July 1930, was married twice (widowed). Elizabeth Jane Corin married Edward 25 Aug 1881 and died 3 Mar 1932.
Hope this helps.
Michael MOlony/MOloney/MAloney/MAlony ?? born abt 1839 Tipperary or Limerick Died Donald Victoria Australia 1922

Hello all
My mothers maiden name was Harrison, her parents being Leslie and Patience Harrison nee Bassett. Patience parents being Ernest Edgar and Mary Bassett nee HOCKING. Leslie parents being John Toward and Sarah Harrison nee Bandy. John Toward Jnr parents being John Toward Harrison was born 4 SEP 1815 in Darlington England. He was the son of 2. Ralph Harrison and 3. Edith Toward. He married Susannah Rebecca Shackloth 1841, daughter of William Shackloth and Mary Watkins. She was born 1821 in St Paul's Church Shadwell London England, and died 10 FEB 1865. She was buried in Melbourne General Cemetery
It appear we are all in the same boat, but here is my problem.
My Great Grand Father Michael John Moloney/Maloney, from the information that I have appears to have been born 1839? and that he could not write or read, asall documents as marked with a "X". It appears from all the documents and paper clipping that I have that Michael John 1839 appears to have landed in Australia around 1860, as the first offical record that I have of him is, his marriage to Jane Anne Nelson born 1845 South Shields England. The Nelson family parents being Peter and Isabella, with Jane resided at Cressy near Geelong in Victoria Aust. On the marriage cert. name spelt MAloney, age given 29 and born Limerick. Michael and Jane have a daughter Isabella born 1875, before they move to the Carron area, which is a farming area near Donald, where the family still reside. Donald being about 180 miles north of Melbourne Victoria. Here they have a daughter Mary Catherine born 1879 and a son Michael John born 1881(My Grand Father see below). Jane passed away at Donald in June 1883 and she was returned to the Rokewood Cemetery, which is near Cressy and the burial ground for the people from Cressy. All Jane's family are buried there.
In 1884 Michael (1839) marries a Mary Grogan born 1842 Roscommon Co Connaught Ireland. They were married in Donald and no children were born. On this marriage cert. the name is spelt MOloney as it still is to-day and stated he was born in Tipperary. I do not know if this fits in with your
Michael (1839) parents being Michael and Catherine Moloney nee Ryan or Egan. On the first marriage certificate (to Jane Nelson) Michael's mother surname looks like Egan, but that could be the way the name was written.
My limited research into how he arrived here has a few possibilities, around 1860, 2 Michael MOloney's are recorded as "farmer's" on on the "Royal Character" arriving in 1859 with his age 21 years. The second "Empress of the Sea" 1861 aged 25 years Michael 1839 spent all his like as a famer.
My Grand Parents were Michael John born 1881 and Catherine Mary Moloney nee McGrath born 21/12/1884. They were married 1919 at Carron, which is near Donald Victoria Australia. Michael and Catherine had 3 children Catherine Mary born 24/08/1919 who married Colin McConville, My father Michael John Moloney born 21/01/1923 and James Dennis born 20/07/1927 single who died 13/09/1990
My parent were Michael John Moloney born January 21,1923 and died aged 42 years on October 12, 1965 and Lovina Mary Moloney nee Harrison born February 4,1924. Michael and Lovina had 8 children all born at Donald Victoria.
Any information, assistance or direction would be much appreciated.
John Moloney

Thank you for your reponse as I now realise I didn't qualify what I did know about Joseph, once he left Cornwall.

He came to Australia with his wife Ann (nee Trembath)and 4 children on the Bussorah Mercant reaching Port Adelaide on 10 Nov 1848. Their older daughter Jane with husband Hugh Long and 2 children had arrived in October aboard the Santipore.

Both families went to the copper mines at Burra. Joseph was drowned in 1852 when the coach in which he was travelling was overturned in the Light River at Kapunda on its way to Adelaide. His wife Ann is supposed to have died in the Destitute asylum in Adelaide in 1856. Most of the children who came to Australia had gone to the Victorian goldfields in 1851, including my great great grandmother Eliza (who married Thomas Madden in Burra in 1851)and had a daughter Mary Ann before leaving.

I also understand from Hocking Descendents Society that Joseph bap 1/3/1803 St Just in Penwith was the sone of Joseph Hocking and Jennifer Curnick (m 28 Feb 1802, St Just in Penwith). His eldest daughter's second names were Trembath Curnick.

There is a younger brother John also listed, bap 7 Feb 1813, who married Matilda Blackwell.

I know nothing of James Hocking, his parents or siblings. I would love to find out more. Perhaps we can invite one another and match up our trees. Isn't it fun to find our cousins! we always knew the Hocking name came from Cornwall, but didn't know how or where. This is exciting!

Pauline,
I think your Sarah Hocking was Sarah, daughter of Thomas Hockin(g) and Sarah Oram baptised 25 JAN 1806 Helston, Cornwall. Thomas and Sarah were married 6-5-1804, Helston. You may be able to trace that Sarah in Helston records, but Thomas was a sojourner, meaning he came from some other parish.

Best,
Ken

I have a handwritten letter written by (William) Ernest Hocking. It was addressed to the minister of our church the Rev. Dr. John Howland Lathrop. It was written in May, 1955, and seems to be in response to a letter from Dr. Lathrop possibly regarding the death of HOcking's wife, Agnes. I have uploaded a scanned copy for anyone who is interested and would also be happy to mail you the original to a descendant.

Hi Sherrill, Many thanks for your E'mail, for me with our large membership list, I do find it a lot quicker to correspond in that way. I do receive many E'mails from all over the world, usually accompanied by research requests.

I did not mention in my last message to you, that as a Non-Profit Society our aim is to maintain an Association of those interested in the origin, historu & the development of the various brances of the Hocking families, which includes the various spellings of the surname. 2. To promote the conservation of documents & other material of special significance to the various brances of the Hocking family & its descendants. 3 To foster the study of history of the various brances of the Hocking family with the intention of sponsering the publicationof definite research, where the appropriate. We therefor issue 3 times anually a 11 to 13 page newsletter for the membership.

Our Society started with 16 interested Hocking folk in 1987 & we have since grown to 346 membership. The committee are all volunteers.

I have just attempted to access your tree on ancestry, but was unsuccessful, most likely, as we have not subscribe to it. If you can point me in the right direction, I would be most gratefull, as you most recent Hocking posting for the

Hocking Descents Society was my own, & your Darbyshire one was not listed.

From your last message I have made some small additions.

As most of my research goes back from the 1400's to 1890's
with the view to assist our members as to earlier generations, we as a Society have reconnected numerous members with family in other countries. For instance I have quite a large portfolio, of U.S. families connected back to mainly Cornwall & Devon.

I have used this method, to answer ,to see if the Darbyshire message will be listed pre this message.

In future I hope to correspond vis E'mail.

For now our best wishes, Maggie & Dick KEURIS.

P.S. I am a retired Det Sen Sgt of Police, that's I inherited this position. Maggie's mother was a hocking.
