Hockings Family from Brixham Devon

I am helping a friend with her family history and have traced back to her 5x Gt Grandparents John Hockings and Mary Winsor.

John was born 1755 Brixham Devon. I would like to trace further back but I do not live near Devon and so unable to access the parish records for Devon.

Has anyone connections with this branch of the Hockings tree and managed to get further back than John. If so please contact me on daltonjulie1@gmail.com

Julie

William Charles Hockings b 1854 Marldon (d 1921), Devon, son of William Charles Hockings (b 1814 Marldon d 1864) and Susan Legg (1819-1897). The latter William was the illegitimate son of of Elizabeth 'Hockins', who I think was probably the daughter of William Hockings (b 1770 Marldon) who appears on the 1851 census at Marldon married to a former widow called Isabella. This earlier William was a son of a John Hockings (b 1736), the son of John Hockings and Mary Looman. Msg me for more information.John Cherry

I have a fair bit of information on the Hockings family of Marldon near Totnes from around 1700 through to 1850 when my ancestor John Osbourn Hockings left for Australia.
I'd love to get the family tree back further, there seems to be a family at Totnes and one at Newton Abbot. ANy clues most welcome.
John Cherry
Brisbane Australia
(my grandmother was a Hockings)

Hi Keith,
Thanks you so much for clarifying this. Are you one of the NZ descendants of Flo Hockings? It was through the Whittington family tree that I first came across Eric's work. It took me ages to realise that the 7y.o. Henry in 1851 was actually HNH -- not until I realised his middle name was Nicholls -- so I put one and one together and came up with three. I've never been able to trace his birth records: have you? I had wondered if he was perhaps the child John and Alice had when they were too young to keep him, or if he was perhaps of uncertain paternity -- but I'd never guessed he was John's nephew. I'd come across Thomas and 'Susan' in the 1851 census and their marriage in 1841, and included them as a side branch, but I didn't know of any other siblings, nor do I know anything of Susannah's parentage or later life. I'd be grateful for any info. Is she related to Alice's mother, Mary Mudge Eden? I guess it must've been a small village, with everyone interrelated. Any idea why HNH was lodging with them at such a young age? If only our ancestors were literate people who could've written of their thoughts and experiences!
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
Marie-Anne

Hi Mary Anne,
Henry Nicholls Hockings is the second son of Thomas Hockings born Abt 1816 & Susannah Eden. Thomas was the youngest brother of John Hockings. Others have made the same mistake while looking at the 1851 Census as Henry was a lodger living with the Nicholls. Have you sighted the Birth Certificate of Henry & that would comfirm.A lot of my research I have been fortunate to get from Eric Hockings of new Jersey in the USA. The Hockings originally came from St Breward in Cornwall & under the earlier name Hawkens which goes back to the 1600's. Trust that this info is of help. Keith

The correct 1910 census spelling to William James is Hosking. The writing is not clear. William is my grandfather who was born in Rockford, Winnebago, Ill. His wife (Margie)and four children are correct, one of which is my father.

I may have a tenuous connection to add to your tree. My great-grandfather was Henry Nicholls Hockings, born in 1843 or 1844, in the Totnes area of Devon. His father was John Hockings -- perhaps a cousin of your ancestor.

Until I started doing this research, we had always been the only Hockingses we knew. My father led his family's exodus from England after WWII; his siblings followed. I'm fascinated to hear of Hockingses who came out several generations ago.

I've just started a tree on Ancestry. Not yet in a form I can send you, but you can find it under 'Hockings & Norrish family tree'. I'd be delighted if you can find a link!

I am just returning to my family history research after a long absence. I would like to construct a family tree for HOCKINGS.

My ancestor by marriage is a William Hockings, born in Camerton, Devonshire, England. He was born to a George Hockings and Jane Moore in 1851 and married a Cecilia Darling on 25 September, 1873 at West End, South Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Cecilia's parents were William Darling and Christiana Wynne.

It is my ultimate aim to have a worldwide family tree for all people of the HOCKINGS name. I would appreciate any family tree information from anyone in the world who shares this same name within their families as I hope to make connections with them all.

If anyone wishes to send me information, either a Gedcom or a file attached to an email would be very welcome.
Hello.
I've no idea whether or not this is relevant to your search, but ... my grandfather was Henry Hockings, born in London in 1875. His father was Henry N. Hockings, born in Devon in 1844. He seems to have maintained contact with the area, because my grandmother, Mary Louisa Norrish, came from Brixham, and they married in Newton Abbot.
Any connection?
I'm actually leaving Australia next weekend to take my family wandering around Europe. The strangest one was when I left a job and they didn't have to change the name on the door as my second cousin Dennis was my successor.

HI all, we are currently residing in Bournemouth now, but my father (Alan) was born in 1954 in Plymouth as was his father before that (He was known as Jack but I believe his full name was John Henry William Litten Hockings). Much of our family on my grandfather's side still lives in the the Plyamouth and Exmouth areas although we are not in touch with most of them. Anyway, a member of that branch of the family, Peter, did a little research and (allegedly) was informed that the family name came from abroad around the time of the Armada, and the ships that brought the immigrants across docked at or near Plymouth, hence why there is a concentration of the family name there, but a little down the road we are the only ones. Like I say this cannot be held as gospel as it is my recollection that provides the information at this time, although it did come from a reliable source originally. Mail me at dwhockings@hotmail.com i you have any other info about the name or origins of the family.

Relatives/Sons/Grandsons of 'Jack' Hockings of Plymouth died around 1960

Looking for anyone who knew of 'Jack' (believe full name is John Henry William Litten), who is my grandfather, although we never met as I am only 21. Jack served in the forces, and I believe he was stationed in gibraltar at one point. He died fairly young around 1960, in his fifties I think, when my father was about 6 years old. He would have been a divorcee as he re-married to my grandmother, Christine, who is now deceased, but he had children from his previous marriage who I have no information about whatsoever. Anyway wondered if there was anyone out there who could fill me in on the missing pieces, or any info at all. Thanks. You can mail me at dwhockings@hotmail.com if you like.

The Westcountry connection

A few years ago, I was visiting my mother when she received a phone call from someone calling himself "Dennis Hockings from Australia". She got very confused and passed the phone to me. I had a short conversation with a young sounding chap who claimed to have traced his line back to Plymouth. I invited him to visit, he said he would and that was the last I ever heard of him. The chances of him being correct seem very high as my paternal grandfather was one of eight boys. They sadly broke up as a family before I was born and the brothers left to make their own way in the world. Only my grandfather, his brother Wilfred and their sister Thursa remained in the area. If anyone has any knowledge of the Hockings diaspora I would love to hear from them. The brothers all went for different spellings of the name, so Hockin, Hocking, Hawkins etc. would all be viable.
