Re: Tishomingo Mississppi Hodges

I am trying to figure out the maiden name and family of Nancy Stanley, first wife of John G Stanley, and I am wondering if she might be Nancy Hodges, daughter of Richard Hodges.

In the 1880 Census, the Stanley family lived in the East half of the 3rd Sup. District in Prentiss County:
Stanley, J.G., w, m, 28, married, works at saw mill, b. Ala.
___, Nacy D, w, f, 26, wife, b. Ala. both parents b. Tenn.
___, A. Adeline, w, f, 5, daughter, b. Miss.
___, (blank), w, f, 3, daughter, b. Tenn.
___, Wm. I., w, m, 1, son, b. Miss.

There are a few errors in that entry. The daughters should have been listed as Lizzie, 5, and Adeline, 3. These ages are confirmed by the 1894 Tishimingo enumeration of educable children (L.O., f, 18; A.M., f, 16; W.F., m, 14; J.M., m, 12) and by subsequent Census records after Lizzie Stanley married Benjamin F. McGaughy and Thomas G. Crowder and Ada Stanley married Elisha Larkin Bruton. No other records say that either Lizzie or Ada was born in Tennessee, so that may be another error in the 1880 record.

"Nacy D" Stanley probably died sometime during the 1880s. Her last surviving child was born in 1881 or 1882. I can find no marriage, death, or cemetery record for Nancy Stanley.

John G Stanley remarried Martha Jane Floyd in 1897 and they had 7 children from 1899 to 1919: George, Tisha, Alice, John, Virgie, Earnest Ward, and Irene. John G Stanley died in 1920 and was buried at Clausel Hill Cemetery. Martha Jane Floyd Stanley died sometime before the 1930 Census. In the 1930 Census, Earnest Ward Stanley appears as the adopted son of E.L. Bruton and Ada Stanley Bruton, Earnest Ward's half-sister, in Franklin County, Alabama.

The Stanley family seems to have lived in the general area of NW Prentiss or just across the line in Tishomingo or Alcorn. I have looked for a Nancy who lived in that area in 1870 with both parents born in Tennessee. There are a few Nancys who are not accounted for in later years, but none is a perfect match.

The closest match I have found is Nancy E. Hodges, 17 in 1870, b. Tenn., parents Richard, 62, and Nancy C. Hodges, 50, both b. Tenn, lived in Twp 4, Range 10 of Tishomingo County. The parents and siblings moved to Texas in the 1870s, but the younger Nancy does not show up in Texas. In 1880, John G. and Nancy Stanley lived next to Larkin Thomas Hodges, so I wondered if that might be an uncle or other relative, but L.T. Hodges was born in Virginia and does not appear to be related to Richard Hodges from Tennessee.

Any help would be appreciated.

Brian Martin
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/6577194/person/6125957679
Sorry it took me so long to respond, I have been really busy lately. Talking through email would work better for me as I am working everyday. I hardly ever talk on the phone because it just doesn't fit into my schedule. On breaks at work though, I check my email. The information you have given me so far is so valuable to me because I had no idea Leslie had another daughter. When I first started my research, I only knew that he had 2 daughters. Those daughters were my grandma Mildred (she died in 2003) and my great aunt Leta. Unfortunately, Leta passed away 2 weeks ago. Not only have I found out that he had a daughter named Opal but I also found out he had an additional daughter named Marie. I believe Marie was his first-born because she was born in 1919. You can email me anytime at angel_69127@hotmail.com. My aunt Karen and I are both very interested in hearing from you. She gave me the information to start researching so I am very grateful to her.

I have more information on the prison records and more on opal may with me. I think it would be easier to talk over the phone. You have no idea how valuable information means to me. I never thought I would meet anyone else that may be from my family who is this interested in this. Thank you.

Rozanne, I may have figured out some of the mystery. I found records that indicate Leslie went by Lee when Opal Mae Hodges was born. She was born May 26, 1920 in cottage grove, lane, oregon, USA. Her father was Lee (aka Leslie) Hodges and her mother was Lottie Martin. He married Lottie sometime before that but I can not find any record of their marriage. Opal's spouse was Fred Lloyd Meyers (they were married July 18, 1935) and she died Jan 2, 1985. Does any of this sound familiar to you? I have learned a lot of new information about Leslie. What is bad is that Leslie was married to Lottie Martin's sister Etta and they had a daughter named Marie Hodges in the middle of 1919. According to a 1920 census, Leslie was widowed so I think Etta passed away. That same census lists Lottie as well as their sister Anna and states them as Leslie's "sister-in-laws".

Leslie Edgar Hodges aka Lee Hodges was my maternal grandfather's name. Rosa Belle Johnson Hodges was my maternal grandmother. Their eldest daughter was my mother, Leta Marie Hodges Baker. My mother did say that her father came from Missouri. He did serve in WW I. My mother was born in 1929, and she never mentioned that he served overseas in WW II. He was a cattle buyer during that period of time,so he may have served stateside in that capacity. He did divorce Rosa when my mother was about 18. And he did later marry a lady named Cora. I have lost track of her full name. They lived in Grants Pass, Oregon briefly before he passed. We visited them several times there when I was a child. Lee's descendants here in Oregon are also searching for more information.

We may or may not be talking about the same Leslie Hodges. If he married Ethel Beeson on Feb 14, 1920, they may have got married because she was pregnant. If he had a daughter named Opal Mae Hodges, this would be new information for my family tree as I only knew about 3 daughters. I found out he had a daughter named Marie Hodges with his 1st wife and Marie was born in the middle of 1919. According to a 1920 census, Marie was 6 months old and Leslie was widowed. The prison information would also be new to me as I did not know he was in prison. According to Leslie's headstone, he was in World War I, but I yet to find a record of this. I did find a record for a registration card for world war 2 that had his name and information on it. I will look into this more and see if we are indeed talking about the same Leslie Hodges. Unless there were 2 Leslie E Hodges that lived on a farm in Oregon.

I need to know more about him and I can't get my grandmother's birth certificate until 2020. I am just trying to figure out the family story. If you have any information on a leslie hodges that was in the military prior to going to prison and got a pardon to get out of prison and went to work on the burns' family farm in oregon, let me know.

Thank you so much for providing me with your information. It is great to know that I might have relatives from my mother's side still living. But is is also good to know about the ones who have passed. My Grandmother Sallie had 3 daughters, Reva who is still alive, lives outside of Memphis, Tn. My mother Betty Frances and her sister Peggy have both passed. My grandmother would tell me stories about her father who was a sheriff, and how he would bring prisoners home with him to keep them safe. And how he still rode a horse back and forth to his job. She talked about her brothers...not too much about her sisters. She never mentioned anything about the Liquor Conspiracy Trial. I learned about that on my own when I was doing some research about the family. I was a little shocked that she never told me anything about it. Do you know if any of her brother's or sister's have family still living in the area? I was born and raised here in Texas. I did visit Rocky Mount once years ago and did find the graves of her brothers. It was at a cemetery in town by a church. I do not recall what the name of the cemetery was. I do appreciate any info that you might have about our family. Thanks so much. Carla

Your John may be my 1st cousin, three times removed -- I don't have the paper trail to prove this, so I might be wrong. But, I do know that your grandma Sallie's father, John Peter Hodges, and her brother, D. Wilson Hodges, were Sheriffs of Franklin County (they were mentioned in a 1935 newspaper article about Bettie's testimony during the Liquor Trials; John had died by then). I don't know yet if any of Sallie's other brothers were Sheriffs.

John was listed as Peter Hodges in the 1900 and 1910 censuses, and as John P. Hodges in the 1920 census (he and his family lived in Franklin County, VA in all 3 censuses). John was a Farmer in 1900, a Deputy Sheriff in 1910, and Sheriff in 1920. Your grandma Sallie was age 7 in 1910, and age 17 in 1920. John's wife Bettie was listed as divorced in the 1930 census (in Franklin County; her son Wilson lived with her, he was age 21 and a Sheriff).

I'm not 100 percent certain, but it looks like John Peter Hodges was the son of the William Hodges who was the son of Albert/Elbert Hodges and Missouri Adaline Jones. And William's wife was Margaret Joyce, daughter of Allen Joyce (Joice) and Sally Poor (Poore). I have much info, so feel free to contact me for anything you might need.

I am looking for anyone that can give me information about this Hodges family. My grandmother was born and raised in Rocky Mount. Her name was Sallie Lee Hodges, Born 8/18/1902. Her father was John P Hodges and Mother was Bettie. She had 3 sister, Bessie or Bittie, Carrie and Mary and 3 brothers. George, Wilson, and Joseph. I know that her father and brothers (I believe) were sheriff's in Rocky Mount and were involved in the Liquor Trial in the 1930's. I would love to have more information about the family or if there are any relatives still alive I would love to meet them. My grandmother died 12 years ago and would talk often of her brothers and sisters. Her husband's name was Jacob Vernon Hodges and they had 3 daughters, Reva, Frances and Peggy.

Our Jesse Hodges is buried in Snowball. It is alleged that a near by grave is of a African-American former slave who was raised with Jesse when they were both boys. I know Jesse had children who lived in Oklahoma and his brother's family moved there. Do you have a news article, death certificate or is this just family tradition? How are you related to Jesse?
Daughter, Pernina Hodges married James Monroe Jordon. They lived in Maude, Oklahoma.
Son, Lemuel Taylor Hodges married Nancy Gutherie and lived in Maude, Oklahoma. (This is the line I am trying to find a male Hodges to volunteer for y-DNA testing.)
Other son, my husband's ancestor, William P. Hodges, moved to Taney County, Missouri, but it was after Jesse died. (5 of Jesse's sons lived to adulthood. 2 of those lines have been y-DNA tested and are exact matches on 67 markers)

Hodges and Phebe Howard as parents of Queenie.

I think the P.L. must be Parrot/Parat/Parret L., but have no confirmation.

The family story is that these lines went back through the Presidents Adams, and that we are related to Daniel Boone.

Is there anyone out there with knowledge of these lines?
I have about what you have actually, wish I had more. My interest is not in their family genealogy but in the location and its existance. I am interested in the near by grave of William Vanarsdel.

Judy

I don't know about that student, but Gen John Hodges was a close relative of my husband's ancestor Edmund Hodges (1801-1862). Edmund also died in Bossier, LA, but findagrave.com doesn't have burial info on him. It also doesn't have much info on the Hodges burial plot you mentioned. It says it exists but doesn't have all the names. Do you have more info about that Hodges burial plot you mentioned?

I just looked at the Camp Zion Cemetery you mentioned, and I believe that Robert Hodges (1795-1861) and my Edmund Hodges were brothers. Their parents were Edmund and Patience Hodges. What you said is exciting to me, because it helps confirm my discovery about the parentage of the Robert Hodges born 1825. His family also eventually lived in the Henry/Houston/Dale/Geneva area of Alabama, and still do today.

You're right; I got confused with that at first. Edmund was born in 1801 in NC, the son of Edmund and Patience Hodges. His brother Robert was born in 1795, according to my research. Is that the Robert you're talking about? Edmund owned land both in Hayneville, Houston, GA and Bossier, LA for a while before moving to LA. And no other family tree has much info on Edmund Hodges' children. I discovered him in a 1850 census in GA and have tried to learn more since then, since his son Robert must be my husband's ancestor. This is what the census says:

Name: Emunnd R Hodges
[Edmund K Hodges]
Age: 48
Birth Year: abt 1802

Emunnd R Hodges 48
Ann Hodges 43
Robert Hodges 20
Mary Hodges 15
John Hodges 16
Patince Hodges 4
Susan Hodges 9
I've seen much discussion on your Robert and Sabrina. It makes sense that we are related because my line was also in Sumter Co GA before settling in the Henry/Houston/Dale Co area of Alabama as did your Robert and Edmund K is also part of my line. But I've never seen anything that tied your Robert to my Edmund. It would be great if we can connect them as it would give me a new line to pursue and much new family. Can you connect the dots for me?
