HODGETTS Worcestershire HARRY b. 1861

Looking for any info on the Hodgetts family from Worcestershire area. My great grandfather was Harry Hodgetts, b. 1863. I believe I found him in the 1881 census age 18, listed as born in Halesowen, residng in West Bromwich, Oldbury. There are 3 others listed at the same address: Susannah b.1830 51 yrs of age HEAD, and two others, being William b. 1861 and Mary b. 1867
It seems as if this is a mother and 3 children.
I find nothing in any of the earlier censuses for Harry; 1881 is the last year possible as he immigrated to NJ in 1885 coming through Castle Garden and then on to Somerset County NJ, where he owned a farm (in Pluckemin / Bridgewater now). His wife's name was Amplias, and they had three daughters (all born in the USA). He died 29 Aug 1896, shot to death by a farmhand.
Any info/leads as to his parents, relatives, would be most appreciated.
This is his gravestone in Somerset County NJ Pluckemin Presbyterian Church Cemetery
My great-grandfather was Harry Hodgetts- he and his wife immigrated to NJ (Somerset County) from England. They had three daughters: Dorothy, Amplias, & my grandmother, Ella (not Elise and you did have a ? mark there).
He was murdered by one of his farmhands at the family's house (shot, when he answered the front door early one morning during breakfast). I have newspaper clipping about this.
I can check on exact dates, but this happened just about the turn of the century, and my grandmother was 6 months old (the baby of the 3 girls), and Harry was quite young (perhaps 30 yrs old, I believe).
If you think this would match, email me if you'd like.
And feel free to pass this along to any others who are searching and might find it relevant.
---------------
Ella married Archibald Thomas Bell; they lived in Elizabeth NJ for years; had one son (my father: Archie Harry Bell) who m. Dorothy Ann Koepchen (Krentz was her mother's maiden name). Dorothy and Amplias remained in Pluckemin / Bridgewater, NJ all their lives-
Amy

Hello Mary,

I see you posted this a long long time ago, so I hope you see it. Samuel Hodgetts would be my great grandfather on my mother's side. My brother's middle name is Samuel - after him. My grandfather is Samuel's son, his name was Joseph Edward Hodgetts (died in 1982). He was a coal miner in PA for awhile, then he married my grandmother Anne Chomin and they moved to Vermont, and they had 4 children - the oldest is my mother, Olga Hodgetts (now Hebert). The four kids are Olga, Eddie (think he is a Junior), Richard and Eva. Most of them have children and grandchildren also, except my uncle Eddie. My great uncle John Hodgetts just died last month (Rochester NY)- he was the youngest of Samuel's children. I'm sure my mother could tell you so much more about that particular branch of the family. So just get in touch if you get this! Nice to meet you!

This Samuel and my g.grandfather James were brothers so this makes us about second cousins twice removed. Are you interested in Family History?
Cheers Ann (from New Zealand)

G'day Salli

Mary Ann's sister Elizabeth married Edward PICKARD at Cathcart Vic on 24 Sept 1857 "in the tent of Mr Baker". She was only 17 and "living with her mother". This was the clue that Martha had emmigrated to Aust. as well and set me to looking very hard at the Star of the East passenger list to find Martha WAISTELL recorded as Martha Wright! You've got to be a bit cluey in this genealogical game.

Unfortunately, Elizabeth died in Vic. in 1863. I've not yet tried too hard to track their brother John.

I would love to have a copy of the Grandma Garlick photo. I have one of her brother John Charles that I can send, plus a few certs. as well.

Please contact me on my private e-mail at dsmedley8ozemail.com.au replacing the "8" with an "@" of course. I have also been in further contact with David above & he has provided me with some other info.

Cheers, Darryl

hi Daryl
Yes I did start this thread back in 2002 {gosh how time flies} I have on my tree that Mary ann had a brother John and a sister Elizabeth. Havent any record of their death date. Though it looks like from Davids post, that John did not travel to Australia but rather stayed with his uncle Joseph. I Have that George Garlick and Jane East had eleven children. Have a photo of Mary Jane Waistell with another woman whom the family always was led to believe was Grandma Garlick. Would be happy to swap info with you.

cheers Salli

Yes we are, Martha's first marriage was to William SHAW in Dudley in 1835. Their daughter Mary Ann SHAW m. Charles EAST in Melbourne in 1854 and their son John Charles was my GGGrandfather. Martha married Christopher Waistell in 1846.

It took me a long time to find Martha's arrival in Australia due to the transcription error/crook captain's manifest.

Do you need any more info on Martha's antecedents? Happy to oblidge.

Are you the Salli Argall that originated this thread back in 2002? If so, I see back then that you had also some interest in the Garlick family. The Jane EAST that married George GARLICK in 1873 was the sister of my GGGrandfather, John Charles EAST.

Cheers, Darryl

Mary jane had a brother James b; 1848 at Staffordshire England and died 26th October 1866 at Dunolly, and a sister Ann b;1854 and died 1907.

G'day David

All good info & that that I have quickly cross-checked with my own info tallies. Except, & this is where this genealogy game gets interesting/infuriating, for "my" Martha HODGETTS.

Her 1886 death cert in Victoria lists her parents as William HOGGETS, Clerk in Iron Works and Jane HOGGETS. Hoggets is obviously a corruption of Hodgetts.

There is the marriage of William HODGETTS and Jane HALE on 6 Nov 1815 at Sedgley, Staffordshire (IGI Batch No.M009982) I understand that Sedgley is but one parish removed from Rowley Regis. Unfortunately there aren't any births for HODGETTS or any corruption of the name in this parish.

I'm going to have to look deeper into this but as I'm in Australia I'm a bit limited to what info is on-line.

I'll get back to you soon

Cheers,
Darryl

Hi Darryl
Thanks for the reply.
Sorry to be so long in replying but have been doing some more digging.
Re my Ancestor Joseph Hodgetts.
I find him on the 1851 Census in Coalville Leics.
Birthplace is listed as Whiteheathgate, which turns out to be in Rowley Regis, Staffs not Worcs. Living with him is a nephew John Shaw, who must be the son of Martha and William.
From Josephs Marriage Record, his fathers name is John.
From the Rowley Regis Baptism Records there are 4 children born to John and Jane Hodgetts of Whiteheathgate, including Martha and Joseph.
I have yet to find a death or burial for John Hodgetts I think that Jane remarried twice after his death. I also believe John was previously married to Mary Jarvis. There is a burial for Mary Hodgetts in 1813.
I have listed below a number of records that should prove of interest.

David
Leicestershire England

Census 1851 Coalville Leicestershire
Joseph Hodgetts 27 Married Head.
Sorry--to clarify, the William Hodgetts in my family tree is the *father* of Phoebe. William was born about 1851 in Rowley Regis, Staffordshire. He married Sarah Dudley, but I don't know when they married and I've no information on her.

Phoebe, their daughter, was born January 29, 1886. She first married a man by the surname of Mullett (first name may have been Clarence?), they had a daughter named Lillian, then came to the United States. They had two other children in addition to Lillian, but I'm not sure if they were born in England or the United States. Her first husband died, and she remarried to Francis Westwood and had three more children with him. My grandmother was one of those three children.

I know "Clarence" Mullett was involved in coal mining in the Staffordshire area.

I do have a William, born in 1840 to William and Maria Hodgetts. I have never found a marriage for William - do you have the marriage details of William and Phoebe. Do you know where your William was born?

Maggie

Maggie--I would be interested in what information you have. My great-grandmother, Phoebe Hodgetts, was born in Staffordshire in 1886. Her parents were William Hodgetts (born about 1851 in Rowley Regis, Staffordshire) and Sarah Dudley (no information on her yet.) Could the William Hodgetts in my family tree be the son of William Hodgetts, twin to your Sarah, perhaps?

(All these Williams and Sarahs are getting confusing!)

Good morning, Maggie. Thomas is Mary Hodgetts' maiden name. I don't have anyone with the first name of Thomas either. My Mr. Hodgetts was Joseph, born about 1796 in Handsworth, Staffordshire. I have copies of the marriage license of Joseph HODGETTS and Mary THOMAS and then the baptismal record of their first son Joseph Alfred HODGETTS in 1833. Then a big gap until the 1851 census was taken. By 1851 Joseph Alfred was apprenticed and not living with his parents. I'm hoping to find some documentation of this family after 1833 and before 1851, but am not having any luck. So far, I haven't found a connection to Bromich though. Sandy

Hi Sandy
This doesn't sound like my family but I know my Joseph had 2 families. As far as I know his children around the time of my Thomas are Ann 1786, Sarah 1787, Susannah 1796, Thomas 1797 all with wife Ann Hutchins. Earlier he had a son Joseph born in 1785 (I think) with wife Mary ?. I am very vague on all this so can't tell you anything 100% other than Thomas' date of birth. My Joseph 1749 - 1813 retired from military service in 1801.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
Sandra

I have Joseph HODGETTS born Handsworth, Staffordshire about 1796; married Mary Thomas at Clewer, Berkshire in 1830; had 7 children. The oldest son was baptised at Paddington, Middlesex in 1833 and the others born in Kensington, Middlesex. Joseph worked as a servant and was at one point employed by a member of Parliament. I realize you said you have no birth records of your Joseph's children, but do you see anything here? Sandy

Hi Philip
Yes, it is a fascinating book and given the dates of the first traced Hodgetts I too think that connections will be made if only to the unmentioned non inheriting members of the family. Since last speaking to you I too have found connections moving towards the Kingswinford area. Would love to be in England and able to follow up. Are you able to get hold of someone in the Black Country Bugle which is based somewhere in the Kingswinford area. They have archives full of history both local and family but will not enter into a written correspondence with anyone. They may let you take a look. Is there some way we can exchange email addresses instead of using Ancestry?
Cheers Ann

Hi Ann, I managed to get hold of a copy of mahogany desk and look up a lot of info in there about the Hodgetts. What a fantastic list. After unravelling all the John's and others etc. my father and I have been able to establish that we do not originate from those Hodgetts listed in the book, however that said, the 10 generations of John Hodgetts that are not listed individually may well hold the key to the Thomas we are looking for. Gradually there has been a geographical shift in the Hodgetts I am tracing from the Handsworth area westward towards Kingswinford, which is significant and only 12 miles or so. I just hope I can find the link........ Having seen the picture of Emma Hodgson nee Hodgetts I am even more convinced of our family connection along the line somewhere as she is the spitting image of my paternal grandfather and his sister, gave me the shivers when I saw the remarkable resemblance across the decades.

Regards

Philip

Hi Ann, ISBN is International Standard Book Number. When a book is published it is given a unique number reference. If you open any book and look at the publisher details for the edition, year of publication etc etc the number should be there somewhere, unless of course such numbers where not in use in 1971. I was only three then so have no idea if books at that time had such numbers...... but I hope they do. The number usually is given like this; ISBN 0-7509-1418-1. However it doesn't matter as I have found the title at an antiquarian book sellers shop in Worcestershire which I hope to buy from them. It is out of print and the book is currently £25 which according to the current exchange rate would make the book about $67 NZD. Not bad for a 37 year old book. Hang on to it, it should grow in value!

Thanks for the additional info about the family and houses, I shall also try the Black Country Bugle, that sounds fascinating.

Many many thanks for your time and correspondence, most informative.

Kindest regards and best wishes
Philip

PS I found another title 'Stourbridge and it vicinity' published William Scott 1832. The book has been digitised by someone. I only found it by searching John Hodgetts Corbin Hall on google and up it popped. Some little titbits in there. Here is a link if you are interested. Scroll to page 132 and the info starts from there.

http://books.google.com/books?id=Gr8HAAAAQAAJ&pg=PA133&a...

Hi Phillip
I'm afraid I do not know what an ISBN number is. I thought with the publication details your local library might be able to help but, I'm inclined to think the book will be out of print. Just re-read the section on the Gunpowder Plot and the house at the time was owned by Stephen Lyttleton one of the conspiritors. Shuttend House was owned by the Hodgetts from the early 1500's. "Shuttend was built in the time of Queen Elizabeth. John Hodgetts Esquire also bought Corbin Hall but it is unlikely that the Hodgetts ever lived there for the ten John Hodgetts of whom there is a record all lived at Shuttend House." Have you tried the Black Country Bugle newspaper. I contacted them once and they printed my letter. They won't enter into correspondence re family history but when they published my letter they put in quite a bit about the Hodgetts in the area. I believe they have extensive archives which they may let you into. I think they operate from the Kingswinford area in Wolverhampton. Hodgetts also owned Ashwood Lodge as early as 1650. This went to Thomas Rector of Kingswinford.
Cheers Ann

Hi Ann, what news that is about the Gunpowder Plot. I did not know about that. Do you have the ISBN number of the book please? I would like to try and get hold of a copy of that. It might lead me somewhere further down the road in my research. It is unlikely as my male Hodgetts all seemed to be named Thomas. There are one or two exceptions, but mainly they are Thomas. The book would still make an interesting read though and you just never know what links it might make possible especially with its pedigree chart.
Just thinking about Ag Lab, other lines of my ancestors that I have been looking down in Northumberland..... they are mostly Ag Lab, but where would be without them? Empty plates are no good to anyone. Very important work!

Thanks for the info

Regards

Philip

Hi Phillip
I too have only managed to get back as far as 1790 with a George Hodgetts born in Stone Stafford. He married a Jane Smith born in Chester and moved into the Sedgley Wolverhampton area. So far all of mine were, what is termed the salt of the earth,(tongue in cheek), coal miners, carters, a royalty master, wool comber and the ubiquitous Ag.Lab. Thanks for the references. I knew the name evolved from the Norman Conquest. Did you know that a Hodgetts was involved in the gunpowder plot taking refuge at Holbeach House between Himley and Kingswinford? I have a book called,'Out of the Mahogany Desk,' by K.C. Hodgson. The first chapter is devoted to the Atwoods and the Hodgetts. It covers the period from 1736 - 1887. Published by the Research Publishing Co (Fudge & Co Ltd.), London 1971.
The pedigree chart gives Hodgetts of Shuttend House beginning with a Thomas Hodgetts 1492 who married a Joyce Thomins. Thomas is followed by 10 generations of John Hodgetts, his son being the first. This is still later than your John Hodgetts and Agnes but interesting that he is a John too. Perhaps he is Thomas's grandad?
Cheers Ann

Hi Ann,
glad you liked the pics of Hodgetts Lane. Yes it is very well presented.
The Hodgetts line I have followed has always been in the vicinity of Handsworth and Aston / All Saints / Birmingham.
My ancestors were in the jewellery trade right up till the 1960's in the Jewellery Quarter, other occupations over the last 200 years have included gunsmiths, silversmiths and electro-platers, one was a publican on the side!
One note of interest for me was that the first mention of a Hodgetts was actaully in Handsworth in 1430. Here is that info with a link you might find interesting. Perhaps all the Hodgetts of the midlands originated from this man and his wife!

The Hodgetts of Handsworth

The earliest references to the Hodgetts family appear to be in 1430-31 and in 1440 when John Hodgettes and Agnes, his wife, were concerned with grants of land. A hundred years later a John Hodgetts held of the lord of the manor a messuage and lands. It is probably this John who is described as yeoman of Lydiate in the earliest Parish Register of 1559. From the information supplied in the register of that time by William Walker, curate, later rector, one can get a picture of the Hodgetts family in Elizabethan times. John and Joan, his wife had six sons and five daughters. Their eldest son, William, is described as husbandman and later yeoman of "Le Grove" (1595), and probably inherited the family holdings to the east of Grove Lane. The homestead may have been on the same site as the eighteenth-century farmhouse which was demolished when the Public Baths were built in 1907. William and his wife had twelve children, two of whom died in infancy.

The above info can be found here;

http://www.handsworth-history.org/hhs_early_1.html

All very interesting stuff. My father was brought up in house on a street not far away from the Baths which replaced the homestead farm of Le Grove which was within what is now Handsworth Park. Grove Road still runs down the western edge of Handsworth Park which was my father's childhood play area!

I also found the origins of the family name interesting. This what The Oxford Names Companion has to say about it.

Bear in mind that the name comes from HODGE.

Hodge; English;

1 from the medieval given name Hodge, a pet form of Roger. For the change of initial cf. Hick and Hobb, also Hann.

2 nickname from Medieval English Hodge, hog, which occurs as a dialect variation of hogge, for example in Cheshire. placenames; cf Dodge.

Diminutives; Hodgin, Hodge(o)n; Hodgett; Hod(g)kin, Hotchkin, Hodskin.

Others also include; Hodges, Hod(g)son, Hodgshon including diminutives Hodgins, Hodgens, Hodgetts (common in the W Midlands) Hodg(s)kins, Hodgki(e)ss, Hadgkiss, Hotchkins, Hotchkiss, Hodg(e)kinson, Hodgkis(s)on Hodgeskison and Hodkinson.

Some Hodgetts were also sherrif's in Staffs and Shropshire. Whether they turn out to be relatives of ours only time will tell. Here is a link;

http://www.the-staffordshire-encyclopaedia.co.uk/view.php?id...

Scroll all the way down the page to the year 1702 and you will see a Humphrey Hodgetts and then follow on through the years and you will see others of his family that continue that trend. Just snippets of information that are so tantalising at this point in my research. I have only so far got to the 1841 census and traced the line back to individuals that were born about the 1770's. Whether I will ever be able to make connections that lead to the Sherrifs of Shrops and Staffs and ultimately John and Agnes of 1430 I have no idea. Perhaps others will be able to help us determine any links that might be possible.

I would also like to know (but perhaps never will) if there are any links to the peerage as Hodgetts are mentioned on the following site;

http://www.thepeerage.com/p24073.htm

All a pipe dream but I do have aspirations to have land, money and a throne hahaha!

The beauty of the internet eh! Unbeleivable that we discuss this whilst you are in the Southern Hemisphere and I am in the Yorkshire Dales.

Best of luck with your research. Who knows there might yet be a pot of gold at the other end of the Hodgetts Rainbow! LOL.

Regards

Philip

PS just to exhaust you completely there was also a Thomas Hodgetts who did engravings of some famous people. I suppose the engravings were done from paintings already in existence, but an interesting titbit anyway.
Hi Phillip
Thanks so much for the information. Isn't Hodgetts Lane presentable? Great photos. I wonder if the idea of a Fold as a small holding or farm could be extended to cottages in a mining area built and rented out by a Hodgetts?!! Or if there is some archive where onc could look up long gone land ownership?
Ann in New Zealand
