Does anyone have information regarding Mary Hodgkinson? She married James Yates from Astbury Cheshire. The marriage took place December 30th 1834. They lived around scholar Green, Cheshire and Brieryhurst Staffordshire. Any information on her gratefully received.
Jeanette Allen.

One day we will know the answers. I note that John E Millais was born in Southampton as was his older brother William..who was also a painter not so talented as J.E.
Denys & Chris both had paintings by William. Look on Google for Clement Hodgkinson..very good article. In the early 60s we lived in Melbourne .. I knew what a really nice place it was. But do read about hime. A few years ago there was a discovery in Oz..of notes sketches etc..which turned out to have been made by Clement on one of his expeditions..he had sent them to a young lady..who married someone else!. They were recognised as an importand record of Australian history..and purchased for the national archive. I was a frequent visitor to Portugal in the late 1960s so knew the Fonseca Guimaraens labelbut only know now of the connection!

You say you believe Agnes was a CofE nun, whereas at least one of Mary Jane (Hodgkinson) and Manoel Fonseca Guimaraens' daughters, Agnes I believe, was a Roman Catholic nun, but then, Manoel Fonseca was most likely Catholic himself (his parents were married both in a CofE church and at the Catholic chapel at the Portuguese Embassy in London) although his descendants were CofE. I also noted on the Hodgkinson website that mention is made of one branch that was believed to be recusant Catholics.

This offers an interesting train of ecumenical thought. Patrick Hugh Guimaraens, whose brother Paul & wife also lived at 35 Albany Villas in Hove, in the 1960s, was first cousin once-removed to all the above children. He was a devout Catholic and so was his mother, Isabel LETHBRIDGE GUIMARAENS - Isabel had Darwin as one of her collateral ancestors.

There is no doubt that Clement & Henry remained Hodgkinson. Henry marr 1845 Southampton to Mary Ann Howard..no issue but they are in Census1881 in London. Clement married 3 times... 2nd marr in St Pancras 1846. I have met desc in New South Wales. If you search for notable australians you will find him mentioned. The Enoch who married Mary Ellis in Thornhill,Dewsbury,Yorks on 26Sep1800 was a different chap to the Enoch who married Mary Evamy. Some years ago I was in touch with a BBC producer prior to a programme on Millais..and the Hodgkinson connections were well documented. Henry donated[!!] one painting to the nation.

Forget Clement - he remained HODGKINSON true to his death and he had an extremely illustrious career as a civil engineer in Australia where, coincidentally, he worked with an ancestor of mine, Sir John COODE.

Clement b. 1818 died 5 Sept 1893 in Melbourne. He had 3 wives. The first, Matilda Mary Chapman he married in 1841. She died in childbirth, with her infant daughter, in 1842. He then married Amelia Diana Hirt who gave him several children and after her death, Annie Davis Smart.

There is an extensive and fascinating biography of Clement as part of the Chapman Family Tree on Ancestry. I recommend you look it up.

Joy I do have more data on this family You will find George Percival & Agnes on the 1881 in Middlesex. and Charles in Kent. Had e-mail this morning from Magdalena.. says she is in touch with you already! Percival marr 1876 Frances Huggins. He died 1919 Thanet. Agnes died 1934.. we think she was a CofE Nun. 40 years ago I was in touch with Denys Beevor H b.1914 & his cousin Christopher Milnes Hodgkinson b.1901. Their research started about 1940. that's another story. It's fascinating.. here is a taste..Denys inherited a lock of Byron's hair

Sorry Wilf. I just read this posting, after correcting your earlier one in which you give Enoch's wife's name as Mary Ellis, or somesuch.

This posting answers my question about Clement and Henry's parentage and dates of birth. I, too, have no idea who raised these two boys. They were very little when their mother remarried - ages 4 and 2. Surely, if she and her new husband JW Millais kept her daughter, they would also have kept the two young boys as well, don't you think? As Emily Mary took on the name MILLAIS - as she is recorded - perhaps the boys did so as well? Has anyone looked for a Clement and Henry Millais, possible step-siblings to the painter John Millais?

John HODGKINSON died 5 April 1860 at his residence 35 Albany Villas, Hove, Sussex. He is buried in Hove Parish Churchyard. His widow Ann (Canney) HODGKINSON was still living there upon her death in 1875.

With Joy's having discovered Percival and George Arthur away at school, in the 1861 census, and that census mentioning Mary, John and Richard at home with her, that only leaves Charles and Agnes to be accounted for.

I beg to differ with you. Enoch married Mary EVAMY, daughter of Richard and Mary EVAMY of Southampton, 7 Jan 1811. Their daughter Emily Mary was born in 1814.

After Enoch died, his widow Mary married John William MILLAIS and they had several children, including the painter John MILLAIS. This couple apparently adopted Mary's daughter as she is recorded as Emily Mary Hodgkinson MILLAIS.

In the meantime, we have another Mary Ann Hodgkinson showing up as WILSON then KEPPEL. Just WHO is she?

You state that Mary Ann had two older brothers, Enoch b. 1802 and John Gill b. 1804. How could this be if Richard and Mary EVAMY only married in 1811?

In other words, which of the two Enoch HODGKINSONs married to a Mary is the correct one? I have to look up my files, but EVAMY is a name that comes up with the MILLAIS data and references to Southampton, so I believe my Enoch-Mary is the correct connection.

James Thanks for info. The family in NZ knew of Ann Canney... but thought the name was Carney. Know nothing about the voyage to NZ. We presume John & Ann had no children. Not unusual for one parent to die leaving the other with young children. Note Clement & Henry were very young when mother married John Millais. We think that Henry & his wife [nee] Sarah Ann Howard were models in Millais paintings. Henry owned one or two ..had no issue and left them to the nation!!

Wilf, thanks for your infomation clarifying that. I see Caroline Nettleship, whoever she is, witnessed John Hodkinson's marriage to Sarah Farmer, so there would appear to be a continuing family link to the Nettleships. I have a Henry Nettleship (Druggist) who may be an uncle or cousin and was just wondering if anyone had looked into John's Mother's family at all as there seem to be several trees on Ancestry all claiming John Hodgkinson and yet having him die in several places at different dates, poor chap. Maybe this Nettleship family looked after the children you mention...

I should add except for the Enoch H of Southampton who was a younger brother of John. This Enoch [of Southampton] marr Mary Evamy in 1811 they had 2 sons Clement 1818 & Henry 1820. Enoch d.1820 & Mary marr[2] John Millais in 1822. We dont know who raised the 2 young boys. The younger John marr[1] Hannah Mary Dyke in NZ 1867.

I am only recently aware of the Hodkinson link so I am trusting to the Hodkinson clan/descendants to fill in the blanks there. Albeit they are not direct relatives but none the less may have info on Anne Canney as a Step-mother. I am looking particularly for images or documantation about her or her brothers James and Edward. John Hodkinson (Anne's step-son)born c1841 sailed with Anne's brother, Edward, on the fatefull Josephine Willis. He presumably escaped the disaster but his unlucky step-uncle did not. Maybe his descendants might know more?

Hi James. You will have realised that the others on this thread desc from the same Hodgkinson branch. John's parents were John & Ann nee Nettleship. John died 1860. Of the siblings you mention... Mary Jane was the one who marr Manoel Guimaraens in 1864. John went to New Zealand... desc still there. Richard we think died 1859 Lymington. But what of the other 4 siblings: Charles, George, Percival & Agnes where are they? Did you know that Ann Canney was living near the Guimaraens family in Hove.. at a later date.

Research began in 1940 so pre-PC..just cards in boxes.. your branch came under "S". The letter from your family was I think in the genealogist Mag about 30 years ago. But its still a problem to locate you on censuses and freebmd. Just look at the death of Manoel in 1885. Your Mary Jane H was d/o John & Sarah Farmer He d.1860 and she d.1850. Cant find your family in 1881 census have tried many spellings!! Do you know Mary Jane's siblings/parents/gparents and connection with Enoch/Mary Evamy? regards wilf H

As the GUIMARAENS family genealogist, I am sorry that your family had difficulties in contacting anyone of our family, especially as for years and years several GUIMARAENS, children of Mary Jane (Hodgkinson) and Manoel Pedro GUIMARAENS lived at Albany Villas in Hove, where Anne (Canney) HODGKINSON had herself lived. They were already there at least in the late 1930s.

You provided a link to a website but I found it confusing. Which of the families listed there is the one I am interested in? If you could contact me directly, I would appreciate it as I am interested in additional information on the HODGKINSON side.

Magdalena

For info on this Hodgkinson family please e-mail me. Serious research began in 1940 by Christopher Milnes H and his cousin Denys Beevor H. We tried many years ago to contact the Guimaraens family without success. Enoch & Mary had 2 sons Clement b1818 & Henry b.1820. Clement became well-known in Melbourne.. I have met desc in Oz. You will find a tree for the Keppel family on the internet. This was a v.large family! See www.harriesuk.freeserve.co.uk and go to Hodgkinson main page. This is Family S...simply an ID... pre-PC days!
Wilf H

Sorry, my mistake. It was terribly late when I copied the record. This was a record of Mary Anne WILSON's marriage to Frederick Walpole Keppel in 1848. The record is entitled "marriage or divorce", hence my mistake. It does not indicate whether she was a widow or not, but this is of her marrige to Frederick.

A footnote to what I posted earlier. It appears that Enoch and Mary's daughter was not adopted as I found a record of her marriage and later divorce, in 1848, from Frederick Walpole Keppel, and her name is given just as Mary WILSON (HODGKINSON). Why she is listed as Wilson, heaven knows, but the probabilities of a Mary Hodgkinson, daughter of Enoch, in London, not being the same person, indicates that she may have re-married after her divorce de Frederick Keppel.

Another note. There is an obvious transcription record of the Hampshire Extracted Parish Records regarding John-W and Mary Evamy's marriage in 1822. In it, it says Mary was baptised in 1769. The date is incorrect as her christening certificate clearly states she was christened 27 May 1789. This is in agreement with her marriage record to Enoch Hodgkinson at the age of 21 in 1811.

Magdalena

John HODGKINSON and Sarah Ann FARMER are part of my direct ancestry line and it is a very interesting one indeed. I have a portrait of Sarah Ann Farmer, by John E. Millais, and my brother-in-law has a portrait of John, also by Millais (I have asked him to take a photo of it for me). Their daughter Mary Jane b. 1838 d. 23 Dec 1916, married Manoel Pedro GUIMARAENS in London and her brother George Arthur is recorded as executor for MPG's Will in 1886.

Now this is where it becomes interesting...

John Hodgkinson had a brother Enoch HODGKINSON who married Mary EVAMY, daughter of Richard and Mary Evamy of Southampton, 7 Jan 1811. They had one daughter, Emily Mary b. 1814. Enoch died bef. 1822 when his widow, Mary, married John William MILLAIS. They had several children, one of whom was the painter, John E. Millais. John-W apparently adopted Mary's daughter as she is recorded as Emily Mary Hodgkinson Millais.

The Hodgkinsons were eminent druggist/pharmacists, in London and Southampton and, according to family lore they first came to London from the North of England.

I, too, have been unable to find a date of death for John-W but wonder whether he may not have moved to Jersey as the Millais and Hodgkinson families were very close and the former were from Jersey.

Regarding the CANNEY connection, I note that Anne (Canney) Hodgkinson's Probate in 1875 gives her address as 35 Albany Villas, Hove, Sussex. You will be interested to note that almost everyone of Mary Jane and Manoel's children, most of whom never married, lived and died at the above address. Elderly Guimaraens descendants still lived at that address in the late 1960s.

If anybody can provide me with additional information regarding Enoch as well as his and John's parents, John & Ann Hodgkinson, I would be very appreciative.

M.
I am researching the CANNEY family.
My Anne CANNEY married your John HODGKINSON 25th March 1852 in St Peter's, Thanet, Kent (her family home town). She is shown in 1861 census as living with Mary, John and Richard the children of John and his previous wife, Ann (FARMER). In this census she is shown as a widow. I have not tied down his date of death as yet but it must be between 1851 and 1861. I am trying to find any pictures of Ann CANNEY and John HODGKINSON or any other CANNEY family members from that generation. John HODGKINSON was born 2 July 1809 (Fleet Street) baptised 11 Jan 1810 at St Brides to Ann and John.

I can find him in the 1841 and 1851 cenus but nothing after that.He is listed as a druggist in both cenuses. Sarah died in childbirth in 1850. But i can't find anything on John from 1850. They had 7 children Mary, John, Charles, Richard, Goerge, Percival, and Agnes. All were baptised in St Brides Church London.

I've read information saying she was married in 1654 and born in 1636 making her 17/18 when married but I've also seen a birth date of 1638 and a marriage date of 1653 making her 15 or so when married which seems very young.

He immigrated to the US in 1855 and became a citizen in Beaver county, PA.

I believe he is from a family listed on the 1841 English census. They lived on Charlotte Street in Preston, Lancashire.

Per the 1841 census:
James age 60 cotton weaver
Jane age 50
George age 20 plasterer
John (my ancestor?) age 19, weaver
Jane and James, age 15, James is weaver
John, age 12, plasterer
Paul, age 6
Jane, age 4

This is all I know.
John Henry HODGKINSON and Jane Ann FRANK, Yorkshire

I am searching for anyone related to John Henry HODGKINSON, born c. 1875 in Blackburn, Lancashire and his wife Jane Ann FRANK, born DEC 1879 in Darlington, County Durham, England. They were married in Yorkshire, West Riding in 1901.

Their two known children are Thomas (b. 1904 Guisborough, Yorkshire) and Edward (b. 1902 in Guisborough or Skinningrove, Yorkshire).

Edward visited his Uncle Thomas Spink FRANK (brother of his mother Jane)who had emmigrated to Saskatchewan, Canada.

Thomas was the second husband of my grandmother Harriet Sarah Ann (nee Gardner), formerly married to Charles Henry Jones. This marriage to Thomas took place 17 OCT 1929 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., Ohio, USA where he was living and working at the steel plant.

Thomas and Harriet returned to his parents' residence at 17 Herschell St., Redcar, Yorkshire, England shortly after marriage. His parents resided there in the 1911 census.

I would like to find out if they stayed in Redcar, and where or when Thomas died.

Hoping to connect with someone in this family.

Cheryl
