My great grandfather is William Henry Hodgson married to Susannah Catherine (unknown maiden name). My gran, Mabel Catherine Hodgson was born in Port Elizabeth - at some stage they moved to Kimberley and she married Herbert Coombes (blacksmith and owner of stables at 26 Roper Street).

Bishop of Winchester Marriage Licences & Allegations: Hodgson Burns of the Transport ship Eleanor, seaman, 21 years bachelor and Hannah Gawn of Portsmouth 21 years spinster at Portsea 3 Sep 1811 (at St Mary, Portsea, HAM.)

He was the son of Edward Burns and Margaret and was baptised 14 Feb 1790 at St Mary, Portsea Hampshire, England.
He and Hannah his wife had several children, the eldest of which was Hannah Hodgson Burns who married, as his 2nd wife, John Patten Noble in 1837.
How are you connected to Hodgson Burns?

Just came across this post. Caroline Bentley is my GGgrand Mother. Her parents are Eli Bentely (1808) Staffordshier England and Maria Kettle (1809).

Harold had a wife who outlived him named Maxine, I would be interested to learn more about the family as they are related to the Broomfield family from Sussex England. My Maiden name is Hodgson. My relatives are buried in Langton Baptist Cemetary in Norfolk County. My grandmother was an Armstrong her name was Gertrude Margret. I believe her father was James Armstrong. Her sister was Eliza Jane who married James keith. Her husband, my grandfather was Lewis Hodgson. My father was Larry Henry Hodgson who is buried with his wife, my mother, Joan Mabel (Lawson)Hodgson beside his twin brother Murray Hodgson who died in infancy (6 months). Effie Hodgson could be Lewis's sister as I did have a great aunt Effie but I can not place from which side. I only remember she always hid away treats for me when I was very little. We have researched Nanette Helena Hodgson (my 2nd cousin) and her ancestors, and we think that you may be able to help us (and we can certainly help you, as we have traced this Hodgson family back to 1730). My grandfather (Dr. William Joseph Hodgson) and the Rev. John James Hodgson (Harold West Hodgson's father) were brothers. We live in Oxford, England and we would love to hear from you.

About 4 years ago while creating my family tree, I discovered that my father had been adopted and George William Hodgson was my grandfather. My tree is named the Family Tree of Steven Dean Best... I have been able to find some information concerning this new side of my family but I am looking for more...especially any photos, stories and medical records of George and his family. My father is in his late 80's and has never seen a picture of his father, I would love to make that happen before he passes. Thanks for any help!

I have a David Hodgson, who has a brother named John (first born), b0 1821 Barmston, Yorkshire, ENG. Then immigrated via Prince Edward Island and ended up in Wisconsin. I show this John as married to Elizabeth Annemery might be Taylor. Their father was Richard Hodgson b) Feb 25 1797 in Barmston, near Bridlington, near Hull in Yorkshire, d) Apr 25, 1881 in Arena, Wisc. Family records are at the "Hold" (maybe Holy) Trinity Church, Barmston. Richard's wife was Jane WRIGHT b) Jan 29, 1800 in Bramston and d) Nov 15, 1875 in Arena. Richard and his family of 13 left for Wisc in 1845.

Do you have any other info?

Can anyone help me trace what happened to Anthony Carr Hodgson, Son of Thomas Hodgson and Sarah nee Carr. Anthony born in 1844 married Isabella Crawford in 1866. She subsequently remarried and emigrated to USA. I cant find what happened to Anthony and he does not show on any census after 1861. I assumed he died but cannot find any record of his death. Any information people can give on him or his father Thomas Hodgson born 1808 and married Susannah Blenkinsop in 1836 would be gratefully received.

I have an original 5”x8” photo in an 8”x10” Cabinet Card frame, of children with their teacher in front of their school in Farm Ridge (or Grand Ridge), LaSalle Co., IL. Back of photo contains the names of Ethel and Everett and Earnest Hodgson and lists teacher Cora Mills with other children with surnames Smith and Black, along with a Lizzie Boyd. I’d like to get the picture back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in about 1898-1899. Teacher is about upper 20s and the children were all teenagers or below. The Hodgson children look all to be teenagers.

I found the Hodgson children in the 1900 census for LaSalle Co., IL, children of Martin and Hattie Hodgson. Ethel’s birthdate is given as Feb 1880, Everett as Jul 1882 and Ernest as Nov 1884. SSDI shows Everett was born 31 Jul 1882 and died Mar 1866 and same SSDI shows Ernest born 17 Nov 1884, died Feb 1977 both with last SS check to LaSalle Co., IL.

I'm a descendant of John Usher HODGSON and Elizabeth TAYLOR through their daughter, Anna Rebecca b. 1846 Ontario, CAN. Anna married Charles LUTHER 1867 in LaSalle County,IL. I have nothing concrete on the Hodgsons in ENG. I have an idea of Taylor's parents, but no proof.

I would be pleased if someone could give me any info on Thomas Hodgson, I know he married a Clara Payne in 1892. But he changed his christian names a few times. On his death in 1928 in Finchley his name was stated as Thomas BURNETT Hodgson, I wam interested in finding out where the name Burnett originated from and why he adopted it. I would be so pleased if someone could offer an explanation.

I am doing research into the Hodgson family from Kendal, Westmorland, I have come unstuck on a John Hodgson's marriage to Anne ? from Ireland, do not know the date or where marriage took place. But their 1st child was born in Ireland in 1828 (Ann) John was a Police constable.
I did come accross some info on Rootsweb about this family, but it was posted in 2003 by a Stan Wickman, so Stan if you are still on Roots, please could you help, failing that any help would be appreciated.

Thank you so very much for getting back with me and so very quickly. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your efforts in this. I plan on calling The United Methodist Church in Jamestown and visiting with them about the Bible. The last time I was there was when there was a flood in the area(1993)?. We had stopped in when we were traveling across the states to make sure that my Grandfather's painting of Jesus hanging in the church was unharmed. Eva M.Hodgson was my great Aunt. I don't think there is a connection that I can find. It would have to go back to England or Ireland, and I we have not been abel to confirm where our George came from -- many stories no proof.

Because the Bible did not seem to relate to my family, I sent to a church in Kansas which was mentioned. The following is the text of my letter. It should give you a lead as to where to find the Bible.

I was given the New Testament by Elisha A. Phillips. His card is enclosed. He posted a notice on an internet bulletin board on the Hodgson family history. I asked for the New Testament because I was interested in reviewing its family history information. The information was not particularly relevant to me. Someone with closer ties to Mrs. Hodgson should have the New Testatment.

I don't think there is a connectinon unless it goes back to England or Ireland. Unfortunately, we have not been able to confirm where our George Hodgson came from.

I sent the Bible to a local church in Kansas that was mentioned in the Bible. That was quite a while back. I think it was a Methodist church, but I am not certain of that. Is there a mention of that in the posting chain? I may hae more info on my home computer. (I am at work now.)

Next they moved to Cloud County Kansas area. They farmed near Jamestown, Kansas. Their children were: Edward- b. 1852, Emma-b.1857, Benjamin Franklin-b.1860(My G-Grandfather),and Walter-b. 1867. Is George Hodgson in which you spoke of related to this group? I have been searching for so long to find out information on the Hodgson family that came to this area of Kansas... there aren't too many leads that I have found so far any information would be very helpful! I too am researching the Hodgsons from Kansas. I have a John Usher Hodgson as my gg-Grandfather born about 1820 in England. His wife, "Betsy" Elizabeth(Taylor)? Their children were as follows: Edward-b.1852, Emma-b.1857, Benjamin Franklin Hodgson, b. 1860 and Walter b. 1867. They had a farm in Jamestown Kansas area. I have pictures of several graves from Fairview Cemetary, including (Walter's wife): Mrs. Eva M. Hodgson's your Bible's owner. I am hoping to get information as to who might own the Hodgson Bible at this point. Will pay for any copies of family information found within. Hope to hear from anyone who knows anything...

I have a John Hodgson born in England abt.1820, migrated to Canada where he married Elizabeth (Taylor)? and had children in Canada than moved to Illinois and then settled in Cloud County, Kansas area. Their children were Edward- b.1852, Emma- b.1857, Benjamin Franklin- b. 1860 (my G-Grandfather)and Walter- b. 1867. They farmed and owned land near Jamestown. He was born in England in 1820-ish and married Elizabeth (Taylor)? born in Canada. They moved to Kansas from Illinois and settled in the Cloud county area. Looking for any information about Henry Hodgson, a white metal smith born about 1816. He married May Ann Vail in Saffron Waldon, Essex in 1840. They had at least two children, Sarah and Elizabeth Mary. There is no record of him in the 1851 census or later. Mary Ann died in 1880.

Only just found your message about your relative, Kate Parkes.

Arthur Hodgson was my Great-grand-father and George was my great, great grandfather.

Tixall Hall was demolished in the 1920's, but the gatehouse still stands. I am hoping that I will be able to visit Tixall in the next couple of weeks and take some photographs.

I don't suppose you know of any other Hodgson relatives of Arthur, George and Arthur's mother, Elenna (Mary Elinora Gwynne).

Richard married Elizabeth Pickering 24 Nov 1762 Aldbrough. children were Ann 1764-1792,Richard 1769,Elizabeth 1771,Dorothea 1774,Mary 1777-1787 and Francis 1780.Elizabeth (mother) died 1786 Aldbrough.After the death of Ann in 1792 the family no longer shows up in parish register.
Has anyone come across Richard and children?

I have contacted Bishop Auckland Register Office and they have a death certificate for John Hodgson in August 1851 (though a few days earlier, I think, than the 19th) which I've ordered by telephone. So on receipt and, providing of course it's the right one, I'll photocopy and send it to you (I haven't the facility of a scanner unfortunately so can't email it to you). So if you would send me your email address (I'm not with Ancestry at the moment so can't contact you through the message boards, only email) and obviously your postal address. Fingers crossed it's the one!!
