Re: Hofer Info?

I'm a decendant of a Rosa Hofer. Found a death certificate with the father listed as a Gottlieb Hofer. No mother listed. She was born about 1839 in Switzerland. Could be that Rosa may be Rosina? She married a Wilhelm(William) Bopp also from Switzerland, but they married in Cleveland Ohio. Also, have an article in the Bopp Bible written by a friend about Rosa and her life in Cleveland. Indicates that her father was mayor of Bern, Switzerland at one time. Could this be any relation? I can be reached at boppgirl3@gmail.com or here at ancestry.com. Thanks.

Re: reverand michael hofer

Hi Cathy,

My name is Mark Ziemann. I am the great-great grandson of Michael Hofer. I have been to Sutton and to the Hofer church. I have photos from there and also have some of the sermons in German that were published in volumes. I uploaded the info I had on him to the ancestry.com pages, so you may find some "hints" on him. He had two children Albert and Emilia. His daughter Emilia married a Gemar and they had my grandmother Otilia Loretta. Albert was a doctor in South Dakota who was very well loved. I have some photos of Michael that I would gladly share. I believe Madalena is one of his sisters. He was born in Russia, went to Berlin, then to India, where family lore has that he saved and married a "princess" who was going to be killed. I take this all with a grain of salt. He married her, had two children but she died, I think in childbirth or malaria, and then he moved back to Russia, then they sent for him to be the reverend for a new church in Menno/Scotland, SD.
It will give me a reason to go out and get a new scanner/printer. Let me know if you want to communicate more and share what we have.

Sincerely,

Mark Ziemann
Stockton, California

I am the great granddaughter to Charles M. Hofer from his son William John Hofer (Harry Earl Hofer's brother). Charles M.Hofer was the father of your Harry Earl Hofer. I have George Hofer and Rachel Beroader as the parents of Charles Hofer. Do you have anything that could help me discover who George Hofer's parents were? George was born in Germany (Prussia) and immigrated to America. You and I are third cousins. Smile.

My husband is descended from a Jacob Hofer, born 1841 in reinfauts Germany, immigrated to US in 1884, settled in Cook County IL (Chicago). We have no info on parents, so I wondering if this might be the same Jacob Hofer. Our Jacob married Katherine (don't know last name) in 1878 and had 6 children. Jacob lived and worked in the Pullman community.

Hi Jessica,

I can't see a connection between your family and ours right now. Our Fred Hofer was baptised Gottfried and named as the surviving brother in our great great-grandmother Rosina's 1916 obituary. The different censuses showed Fred had children named Emma, William, Mary and Margaret. In 1910, Fred was widowed and living in Armstrong Twp. Son William was a farmer. Our relatives remember visiting Fred's daughter Margaret in Williamsport. She married John Hurr, her next door neighbor; Hurr eventually owned an ice cream factory. Good luck in your search.

--Lynn

I am looking for information about Jacques and Anna Hofer. They had 2 children, Emma (b. 1892) and Charles(b. 1895). In the passenger lists, in 1917 Emma lists her father's address as Rue Mercerie 19, Lausanne; in 1921 she gives his address as Rue de l'Ale 32, Lausanne. I know Jacques died sometime between 1921 and 1945, because Anna came to the US to stay with Emma around 1945.

I am looking for informtion on possible ancestral links to one Christina (Christiana, Christine) Hofer. She married Friedrich Heppenheimer and lived in NYC in the 1850s and 1860s and moved to Jersey City sometime in the 1860s. She died in about 1885 in Jersey City.

I do not have an exact DOB for her, but from what little info I have gathered, she was probably born about 1834. As to her place of birth, the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census would suggest that she was from Baden. However, NYC church records from the 1850s indicate that she was from Bessenbach, Bavaria.
1885 Death of Sam HOFER - Switzerland to Missouri

Appearing in Charlotte's Pearls -
Jefferson Democrat newspaper:
Hillsboro, Jefferson county, Missouri
WEDNESDAY, 23 SEPTEMBER 1885

The queerest case of suicide we have ever been called upon to chronicle occurred at Antonia, last MOnday night. At about 10p.m., Mr. ZIMPFER and three others were sitting in the saloon, when they heard an unusual explosion in the direction of the shoemaker shop, occupied by Sam HOFER, and on going to ascertain the cause, they saw the window lights shattered and in the room lay the lifeless remains of HOFER. 'Squire BERGMEYER was called in and summoned a jury, and held an inquest. The jury decided, from all they could learn, that the deceased had killed himself in the following manner: He took an old musket barrel - without lock, stock or tube - and charged it with powder and water, and touched it off with a match. The but-end of the barrel was stuck in a crack in the floor, and the rebound drove it in with such a force that it was difficult to pull it out. His head was literally blown off and into fragments, only a portion of the left ear adhearing to the body. HOFER was a Swiss, about 30 years of age, unmarried, and has no relations in this county known of. He had been working at his trade in Antonia two or three years, was well educated, and of a very lively and jovial turn. No cause is known for the suicide, as he left nothing to explain the matter.

My Hofers came from Walshausen also. The farthest back I have is Adam Hofer b. 1797 married to Catherine Schweiter b. 1800. They immigrated to Manhattan, New York in June 1852 aboard the Geo. A. Hopley. Along with them at that time were their children: Adam b. 1829, Maria Margaretha b 16 Dec 1828, Louisa b 24 Oct 1834 (my ancestor who married Joseph Kolb in NY),and Catherina Elisabetha b. 15 July 1837. Catherina Elisabetha married a William Schnell in NY. They had 3 children according to the census - but I have no names of the children and do not know how long they survived. Do any of these names / dates sound familiar?

Hello Maybelle,
I just found that the Kramp family sailed from the port of Stettin, Germany, which since 1945 has been polish and the name was changed to reflect polish spelling. They came on the ship Franklin in 1873.
Judy Nichols
Beloit WI
descendency line is Fred and Theresia Kramp Hoefer to Ella Hoefer Voss to Vivian Voss Haime to me Judy Haime Nichols.
I talked with you once in e-mail, then had the misfortune of losing my husband, dad, mother and brother in the next three years. Have just started back with the info. Is your granddaughter's e-mail still clouds1400@aol.com?
My e-mail is tedditha1@netzero.net.
Hi Donna,
We may have a match on our Hoefer's. I have just gotten back into the genealogy scene. We are having a Hoefer/Hofer/Haefer family reunion in Webb Park in Reedsburg on July 22 of this year. There hasn't been one for many years. You are officially invited if you wish to attend. In the meantime, we can compare notes. My e-mail address is tedditha1@netzero.net.
Judy Nichols
Beloit WI
