I'm doing some genealogy research for a friend. I know for a FACT that his great-grandfather is Clarence A. Hoffert. Clarence was born in 1895 and died in 1951. Unfortunately, I can't seem to go any futher than this generation.

Mr. Hoffert is buried in Allegheny Union Church Cemetery (new) with his wife Katie (Burghart) Hoffert.

If ANYONE recognizes this generation and can give me more information on parents, grandparents, etc., I would REALLY appreciate it. THANKS!!!

Re: Hoffert from France

My direct ancester, Hans Hoffarth/Hoffart lived in Schwaigern, Neckar, Württemberg, Germany c. 1554 - c. 1644. He was the ancester of Christian Hufford/Hoffart, who emigrated to the U.S with his father, Hans Jerg Hoffarth/George Hufford in 1749.

I have corresponded with a Hoffert whose father and uncles were World War II immigrants from Cracow, Poland. He shared an email with me from a Hoffert researcher who indicated that word "hoffert" seems to come from Lorraine/France, and that there was a Hoffert migration from Switzerland to Berlin in 1700. He said that there were three areas of Hofferts in Europe: Bern (Switzerland), Berlin, and Cracow. Many of these Hofferts were Jewish.

The Evangelische Church in Schwaigern, Germany, is the home church for this line, and still has a "Hoffart" crest in the sanctuary. Schwaigern is almost at the mid-point of Bern, Berlin, Cracow, and Lorraine.

All of this says to me that a DNA project for Huffords and Hofferts would be useful to see if there is a link between these lines and a common Jewish ancestry.

Barry Wood, one of the major Hufford researches posted this elsewhere:

The name Hoffert / Hoffarth / Hofwarth is listed in German armorials as far back as the 14th century. I don't know whether these "wappenbuchs" are commonly available. I found them in the reference section of the Library of Congress.

The period from 1350 to 1700 would allow plenty of time for family members to plant new branches in different places. Note that the parish church in Schwaigern was originally built before Berlin was even founded.

The vicinity of Schwaigern lost about half its population or more in the Thirty Years War, mostly in the summer of 1635, when French troops brought the Black Death to the town. Following the close of the war, a number of Swiss migrated into the area to repopulate it. The Lutheran pastor in Schwaigern told me that that accounted for one of the emigrant Hans Jerg (=George) Hoffarth's maternal lines. I don't remember which one offhand; maybe the Sauers. But the Hoffarths were in Schwaigern long before that.

The population of Berlin increased about tenfold during the latter half of the 17th century. Thus, there was ample opportunity for immigration from the Kraigau as well as (most importantly) France. Notably, the revocation of the Edict of Nantes (coupled with the invitation of the Elector of Brandenburg offering refuge to French Protestants) sparked the relocation of thousands of subjects of Louis XIV from Lorraine and elsewhere to Berlin.

I'm not sure whether this is accurate, but I was under the impression that Lorentz Hoffert came to Bucks County prior to 1756. If that's right, he would not be the Lorentz ("Laurentius Hoefert") chr. at Bellingen in Baden 6 Aug 1753.

This is immediately across the Rhine from Alsace, and closer to Basle than to Schwaigern, so I can't associate this Laurenz and his father Josef with any other Hofferts or Hoffarts, etc. Further, the spelling "Hoefferlin" is common in the Bellingen register, whereas "Hoeffert" is rare.

There were Hofferts in Alsace in the 18th century, certainly, in Butten and elsewhere. A DNA test would help clarify who belongs with whom.

From "Six American Colonists: Thomas Newbold, William Rodney, George Hufford, Eberhard Ream, Edward Painter, Richard Bridgeford and Their Descendants" compiled by Eunice Newbold Clark:

______________

CHRISTIAN HUFFORD, III (Christian6, Christian5, George4, Christoph3, Phillip2, Hans1) (b. 8-11-1780 at Woodsboro, MD; d. 8-31-1827, Fairfield Co., OH) m. MARY MAGDALENA RENNER (b. 12-31-1783; d. 4-20-1869 "aged 85, 3 mos. 20 das." from Rush Creek Church, Hocking Co., HO.) She was the mother of eleven children. He inherited 1/8 of the proceeds of sale of his father's estate.

They went to Fairfield Co., OH, in 1813 and settled east of Bremen, OH, on the banks of Little Rush Creek which was all in brush and under water. They soon thereafter located southeast of Bremen on a quarter section of land adjoining SOLOMON HOFFERT on the north. When they came from Pennsylvania their family was only four traveling by horseback with their goods sacked and carried on horses. MARY M. HUFFORD remained a widow 41 years, and during that time she endured many hardships in order to pay for the farm which she finally accomplished. She was a devoted Christian; they both were communicants of the German-Baptist or Dunkard church. Names of their eleven children were: ELIZABETH, AGNES, CATHARINE, DORCAS, HANNAH, MARY, SARAH, NOAH, CASPER, NICODEMUS AND CHRIST.

______________

The sources cited are "Hufford Family History, 1929-1909," by Franklin Pierce Hoffert); and "Hufford Land Records in Eastern Pennsylvania" from Hufford Family Research and Records., Vol. 2, 4-1984, edited by Florence Grove Woods.

You mention in your post that you have newspaper articles on Mattis Hoffert and Elizabeth Kraeger's children. I am unable to open the link you provided. I am the 5th generation here in the US from that line. Their daughter, Helen, is my great-grandmother and was married to Jacob Kirk.

Would it be possible for you to forward those articles to the following e-mail address: refpak@yahoo.com.

It would be very much appreciated. If you would like to compare notes, please indicate in the e-mail and what info you are interested in finding/sharing.

Thank you so much.

refpak

Hey, Robin! Thanks for the plug!

For anyone who is interested in what I am researching on the Descendants of Johannes Hoffer(t) of Berks County, PA you can find my research at:
http://www.hufferfamily.com/tng/index.php

The Berks County Hofferts are likely descended from Johannes' son Heinrich/Henry. Son Jacob moved to Augusta County VA; he has a LOT of Huffer descendants there and in IN. Son Isaac moved to Ohio; many of his Huffer descendants (including me) can be found in OH, IL and scattered around the country.

I would love to share information with others who are researching Hoffer/Hoffert/Hofferd/Huffer/Huffert/Hufford lines.

-Charles B.

Gale:

I have been researching various lines of the Descendants of Johannes Hoffer(t) of Berks County, PA. Johannes' son Heinrich/Henry has quite a few descendants who remained in Berks County (other lines moved to VA, OH, IN, etc.) and for the most part seemed to retain the Hoffert spelling of their name (many of the VA, OH and IN families spell their name Huffer).

Perhaps you are referring to David Hoffert (1881-?) and his wife Kate or Katie (abt 1882-?) who are found in the 1910 and 1920 censuses of Berks County? What info I have on them can be found on my web site:
http://www.hufferfamily.com/tng/getperson.php?personID=I1665...

Let me know if this appears to be the familiy you are looking for; I would love to share information with you!

-Charles B.
Marcey,
I don't have a Clyde Hoffert as Herbert's brother? but this is what I have on Herbert Hoffert who married Frieda Voeltz:

Herbert Friedrich Hoffert, b. 21 September 1899 in Bureau County, IL, baptised 3 December 1899 in Hollowayville E & R Church, Hollowayville, Bureau County, IL

Father: Johann "John" Hoffert, b. 8 December 1872 in Cornell, Livingston County, IL, baptized 17 September 1882 in Hollowayville E & R Church, Hollowayville, Bureau County, IL, confirmation 14 April 1889 in Hollowayville E & R Church, Hollowayville, Bureau County, IL, moved family to farm 1913 in Miner County, SD, d. 15 October 1959 in Bureau County, IL
Mother: Martha Maria "Mary" Vogt, b. 21 April 1880, baptized 22 August 1880 in Hollowayville E & R Church, Hollowayville, Bureau County, IL, d. 16 August 1959 in Bureau County, IL

Spouse: Frieda Voeltz, b. 11 October 1900 in Wisconsin, d. December 1983 in Ladd, Hall Township, Bureau County, IL

Father: Wilhelm Frederick Christian Voeltz, b. in Prussia, Germany
Mother: Wilhemina Marie Haan Fredericka Runge

Married 23 January 1921 in Presho, Lyman County, SD by Emil C. Janssen, Lutheran Minister.

Children:
1 Lester H. Hoffert, b. 9 January 1922 in Miner County, SD, m. Jean Fonti, d. 9 January 2000 in Ladd, Hall Township, Bureau County, IL

2 Venona Hoffert, b. 7 March 1923 in Miner County, SD, m. Mr. Ferger; 1 child (Candy Ferger)

3 Eugene Duane Hoffert, b. 19 August 1925 in Miner County, SD, m. Mary Jane Hughes, 27 November 1948, d. 9 November 1993 in LaSalle, LaSalle County, IL; 2 children (Marcey & Michael)

4 John W. "Jack" Hoffert, b. 24 August 1928 in Berlin Township, Bureau County, IL (living in Spring Valley, IL)
=========

I also have that John Hoffert's parents were:
Father: Joseph Hoffert, b. 8 August 1835 in Alsace-Lorraine, France, immigrated from France 17 August 1854 in New York, 2nd Class Reserve Military Census, Civil War 3 June 1861 in Westfield Township, Bureau County, IL, d. 22 June 1911 in Hollowayville, Selby Township, Bureau County, IL, burial 1 July 1911 in EV. Gottesacker Cemetery, Hollowayville, Bureau County, IL

Mother: Katherine "Kate" Doll, b. 19 March 1833 in Edenkoben, Rheinland Pfalz, Germany, immigration 1857 in Peru, LaSalle County, IL, moved to live in 1892 in Hollowayville, Selby Township, Bureau County, IL, d. 11 April 1926 in Hollowayville, Selby Township, Bureau County, IL, burial in EV. Gottesacker Cemetery, Hollowayville, Bureau County, IL

** I've attached a photo of Joseph Hoffert and his wife Kate Doll.

The only thing I have on Martha Maria "Mary" Vogt Hoffert's parents are that they were Maria Merkel and Jakob Vogt.

John Hoffert married Mary Vogt 28 January 1897 at the Hollowayville E&R Church, probably by Pastor A. Buetow, the witnesses were William Hoffert & Emma Stadler and Ludwig Vogt & Maria Rett.

I have the children of John & Mary (Vogt) Hoffert as:
Ida Maria, Herbert Friedrich, Martha Maria Katherine (Hoffert) Hawkins, Harold, Gilbert Jacob "Gib" (I knew him), Howard Jacob, LeRoy, Darlene (Hoffert) Carruthers Swanson, Arleigh and Lila (Hoffert) Nickel.

John Hoffert was baptized 17 Sept 1882 in Hollowayville E & R Church the same day as his sister Anna Margerethe Madgalene - so this could have been close to when the family became church members. His sponsors were Johann & Elizabeth Genzlinger.

I have a photo with John and some of his siblings - I've attached it. Standing (l-r): Kate (Hoffert) Wunder, Anna (Hoffert) Walter and Mary (Hoffert) Rett. Seated (l-r): (not 100% sure order) Joseph, William & John Hoffert.

Not sure what else you want on Herbert Friedrich Hoffert. I do have that his brother Gib has a son Clyde. I remember Gib & Iva Hoffert well from church, but I didn't know any of their children (I have Helen, Clyde and Arlene).

I do know that this Hoffert family moved with some of my Walter and Pinter families to Miner Co. SD - but a couple of bad years of farming many of them moved back. Some stayed and I stopped and visited some Walters who still live there a few years ago. Ivy (Nickel) Vogt who is still living in Ladd gave me quite a bit of information on the Hoffert, Vogt and Doll families, she just turned 97.

Let me know if you have questions,
dorrie

Hans Hoffarth, b Abt. 1554, Schwaigern, Germany

Hans Hoffarth, born about 1554 in Schwaigern, a town in the district of Heilbronn, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, was ancestor of the Hoffarth/Hoffart/Hoffert/Hufford/Hufferd families who are the decendants of Hans Jerg Hoffarth and Anna Margaretha Most, who immigrated to Philadelphia on the "Allen" in 1729. There is a Hoffart crest in the Evangelische Church in Schwaigern dating from about the 14th century. Some of the descendants of this family became Hoffert in the U.S., but was that just a coincidence? Does anyone know if there is a connection with this Hoffarth/Hoffart family and the Hoffert families in Europe?

Gale:

You husband's side of the family might be the same as my grandfathers side of the family.

The Hofferts in my family tree are from the Brecknock TWSP area of Berks county. They were members primarily of the Allegheny Union Church in Alleghenyville PA. Some married members of the Robeson Plow Church. So between those two churches records and cemeteries I have found a large number of ancestors. I also found a lot of information that opened the doors for me at the below locations.

If you are located in Berks county, checked out the following places for more information:

Berks Historical Society on Centre Ave as church and cemetary records. Some are in a database online for easier searching for names, but you still have to go there for the records. http://www.berkshistory.org/library/

Reding Public Library has a room called the PA Room that has Berks county history records that can help too. Specifically Morton Montgomery book series called "Historical and Biographical Annals of Berks County Pennsylvania". There are at least two biographies in here about the Hofferts, which I found online. I am attaching the index of names for this website so you can view it as
well (I will posted the two bios I found on other replies)

http://www.pa-roots.com/~berks/books/montgomery/61indexh12.h...

Also there is a Berks Geanological Society located on the 4th floor of the new Goggle Works building who has many records as well that can help you. http://berksgenes.org/

My tree is not public yet, since it is a work in progress but let me know if you need/want more information.

Dear Joyce!

My ancestors are Hofferts, original from Bern / Switzerland, later settled in the Berlin area (around 1700 Heinrich Hoffet *1648 and his son Hans Hoffert *1684) - in the various branches of their descendants there are various Friedrich and Ernst. If you send me some more details about your ancestors, I can see which lines of my ancestors and their descendants could be fitting for you or not.

Guido

The Susannah Hoffert I have in my family tree is not a daughter but a daughter-in-law of Lawrence/Lorentz. She married Henry Hoffert and had children Barbara 1785; Anna Eva 1791; Samuel 1793 and Phillip Henry 1795. Does anything ring a bell?

Re: Looking for info on Mattis Hoffert b. 1819 GER > NY

In the 1850 Town of Turin census, Lewis County, NY I have found Mathew Houfut, Elizabeth Houfut and children listed as Elizabeth age 5, Peta (Peter) age 3, both born in GE and John 11 mo born in NY. This has to be the Mattis Hoffert we have been looking for. that would put them ar arriving in US between 1847 and 1849 or 1850. Elizabeth's father was one of the first white settlers near Constableville NY according to Franklin B. Hough's History of Lewis County. They had a 105 acre farm. still trying to find ship/immigration information. also, have a copy of marriage record (from J. Almquist in CO) for Philip and Francesca Kroger (Elizabeth's parents). Philip Kroger was my husband's 3X grandfather. see what you think when you look at census copy. I am helping a friend of mine w/her project; Mattis Hoffert is her direct ancestor. thank you for all your effort/info. Martha
