My sister Nancy (Nancee) lives in Cleveland, you may have heard from her a while back, I'm not really sure.

Drop me a line if you get this, it's only been 11 years since you made your query so I'm just throwing this out there.

Andy

I may have a few clues for you. I am not directly related to the Konen family, but Caspar, Nicholas and Joannes Konen supposedly came to America along with some of my Max family members. So, I was looking for their immigration year.

I have the following family in Hamtramck, MI in 1870:

Casper Kohnen 45
Gertrude 38
Margaret 12
John 10
Mary 8
Jacob 6
Joseph 4
Anna 3

So, the John and Mary who witnessed Margaret's marriage could be her brother and sister.

By 1880, Gertrude had died, and there were two more children in the family:

Casper Coon 54
Maggie 22
John 21
Mary 19
Jacob 17
Joseph 14
Anne 12
Christine 10
Peter J 9

If this is the right family, then they are from the Eifel region of Germany. Caspar was the son of Anna Maria Max and Anton Konen. You can look at the German church records on www.familysearch.org. Just put in Caspar's name, and his parents names, and the birth record should come up.

Good Luck!

Vanessa H.

Hoffman Family from Philadelphia

I have recently discovered the maiden name of my gr-gr-gr-grandmother Elizabeth Hoffman Upperman. She was born about about 1757 and died 10/1/1837 in Philadelphia. Her parents are Sebastian Hoffman (born in Germany about 1730) and his wife Cunegunda or Cunegunde Itterlein (spelling may be wrong). Is anyone else researching this branch of the Hoffman family?
Kathryn
Do you have Hoffman Family Ties to Lancaster Co, PA?

On April 1, 1899 a Benjamin F. Hoffman purchased “all that certain messuage and plantation and tract of land called Locust Grove on which is erected a mansion house, stone grist mill, old distillery and other buildings situated in Conoy Township, Lancaster County, PA.” He was the son of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Rhoads) Hoffman.

Today, the magnificent, two-story, stone house is known as the Haldeman Mansion. It sits on a rise overlooking the mouth of the Conoy Creek and Susquehanna River in northwest Lancaster County.

The Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society is reaching out to the descendents of all early owners of this historically significant property to seek, share and preserve relevant information. If you are researching the Hoffman surname and believe your ancestors may have Locust Grove ties, please visit our website at www.haldeman-mansion.org. Be sure to checkout the “Locust Grove Timeline” for additional information on the Hoffman Family.

We would be pleased to hear from you, to share information with you and have your support in preserving the historic accounts of this unique property.
Hoffmans in Franklin Church Cem - photos to send to anyone interested

A few years ago I posted a query about Hoffman tombstone photos taken for me in the Franklin Church Cemetery; I know not who they are which at the time was the reason for that query; now that I am moving/down-sizing, I am attempting to get rid of things I do not need/want or have room for. If anyone is interested in having these, contact me off site: obh345 at mchiso.com They will not be moving with me.

What I have: close up of stone for Jacob A. Hoffman 1851 - 1881 and Margaret Emma 1856 - 1902. Per info on the backside of photo of several Hoffman graves, they are next to the stone of Alda Mae Hoffman and Curtis A. Hoffman;other stones in this same photo are of Solomon, Amanda, Elizabeth; and Alda Mae and Curtia A. Hoffman. They do not fit into my Hoffman ancestry. I also have a close up of the stone for Alda Mae and Curtis A. Hoffman.

John Hoffman -- b. 1816 PA >> Medina Co., OH

My great-great grandfather was John Hoffman who was a blacksmnith at JohnsonCorners. He was born in Pennsylvania 13 April 1816 and married Mary Rogers, possibly in Medina County about 1839. They had 4 children: Phoebe Ann b. 1840, Elizabeth b 1842, Francis (also known as Frank) b 9. Aug 1843 and a son William (unknown birth date but he only lived 17 days and is buried in Norton Cemetery in Summit County). Summit County was created from Medina County in 1840. Mary Rogers died in 1851 and John married Mary Myers 3 Dec 1852 in Summit County. I don't know John's parents or if he had brothers or sisters but they were in Medina County early as J. Hoffman's death notice states "he was one of the oldest pioneers of the neighborhood(Johnson Corners). He was aged 80 years and has resided here since he was a boy." Perhaps my John and your William have a connection further back. I wish we both had more help. Brenda

Hello,
My grandmother's name is Patricia Levangie- Hoffman. Her mother's name was Lillian Mcnally-Hoffman, and Lillian married Henry Hoffman. I believe they had the following children:
Mildred, Harold(Harry), Joseph(Joey), Dorothy(Bunny), Georgie?, and Patricia (my grandmother).

I'm having trouble figuring out who Lillian's parents were. I was also told she was raised in a convenant with her siblings? She moved from NY to Florida, where she passed away at 51 +/-. Any help or insight would be appreciated. My grandmother Patricia Levangie-Hoffman is still living and I believe her brother Joseph Hoffman is also.

I also have Hoff(s) in my family. Eliza Hoffman m. Samuel Hoff in 1826. I also need help. I know I fit in here somewhere. There is just too many things that are alike.

As for myself, I only know my Hoffman(n)s came over 1867/68 and went straight to Utica. The father, John (b.1818 d.1909) is as far back as I can go, but his obituary did not mention a sister or nieces/nephews. He was from the Marienwerder district in Prussia, but ethnically was Germanic (as opposed to Polish).

I am searching for ancestor or descendent information related to John J Hoffman (1864-1933) of St Paul, MN. He was my great-grandfather and I have come to an impass in searching for either his ancestors or descendents. I have outlined what information I do know below:

John J. Hoffman (B: c1864 in MN; D: 1933 in St Paul, MN)
* Married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Nedwalis (or "Hedwallis")
--B: c1871; D: 8/1895 in St Paul, MN
--They were married Nov. 22, 1888
* 3 children:
--Helen Martha Hoffman Duffy (c1889 - 1974) - my grandmother
Spouse: Michael Francis Duffy - my grandfather
--Bernard (Barney)John Hoffman (1890-1983)
Spouse: Anna Whelan
--Marie Julia Hoffman Daly (1892-1989)
Spouse: J Daly

John J. Hoffman remarried in the early 1900's:
* Married Elizabeth F Kelly (a widow with 2 sons)
--B: 1867; D: 1935 in St. Paul, MN
* 1 child:
--Catherine Lucille Hoffman (B: 1907; D:?)

Census records and SS Death Index information has helped my piece together the above. I hope that someone reading this message board may have information or may also be a descendent of John J Hoffman. Would love to collect facts as well as family stories/information.

Thank you for your time.
Michael

The definitive source for finding a families coat of arms is a book called "Rietstap's Armorial General". Which I believe was published in the seventeen, or eighteen hundreds. It has like 47 different Hoffman coats of arms ( with various spellings ). You'll need to know where your family came from, and the original spelling of your families surname, to tell which one is most likely yours. Allot of times the spelling of families surname was changed after they immigrated ( often times to sound less German, or Jewish ). Which is exactly what happened to mine. Some of the better genealogy libraries, and historic societies will have a copy of it.

Re: Coat of Arms

Unless you are directly descended from someone who had a coat of arms (meaning your father) then there is none. You could also inherit the use of a differenced coat of arms (meaning it has to be different in some way and registered with the agency that approved the original). Arms are not awarded to a family, they are awarded to individual and descend to one heir. Each country is different in (mostly minor) ways as to how arms descend to an heir. Some require arms to be differenced for any heir, some only require a difference for a female heir, some if the heir skips a generation or goes to a different line (nephew/neice rather than son/daughter). I would suggest that you first determine where your line came from and then research the armorial laws of that country.

Having said that, there are a number of arms that various Hoffmans (by various spellings) wore. My wife found and pointed out one that struck me. I do not wear or display it, but I took the major theme (three pines on a knoll) and have the three pines as a monogram. I keep getting asked if I am a horticulturist. The reason it struck me is that a farm house about 20 miles from here was a favorite place for me while growing up and it had three pines in front.

Since I am sure that I do not have authority to wear these arms, I have never researched them to know where they are from or anything about them. I assume they are German, but could be from some neighboring country.

Hope this helps -

Lee

I was reviewing the posts and found this one. I think there may be a connection in that my great grandfather Daniel W. Hoffman may be a brother to George C. Hofman.

One of the children listed is named Nowry. My Grandfather is Nowry James Hoffman who married Cora Belle Whitehead. He was born in Allegheny County, PA. Please let me know if there is a connection between these families. Thank you very much.
