Hi Nancy,

Do you have a male HOFFMAN in the Family Tree DNA project? That would be interesting. I don't think we are Jewish, since the records in Germany are in the German Reformed Churches, but it would make an interesting twist in the tree. My brother is in the FTDNA Hoffman project, as well as the Germanna one. His name is Craig.

Donna Hoffman Schultheiss
Victoria, TX

I too have all these in my family history. I am convinced that they were Jewish converts. My mom told me that her family were practicing Jews who came over under the guise of Quakers or the German Reformed Church. Most accepted Messiah but they never let go of the Jewish ways; which is the way it supposed to be. I too am a Jewish believer in Yeshua HaMaschiach. We do not believe the Torah has been abolished but Magnified:

Isaiah 42:21 "For HIS righteous sake HE CAME TO MAGNIFY THE TORAH".........this means to make it more binding.......

We also have Reichmann and Brues in our trees as well. These are very well know Jewish names.......
Re: hofmann - german or jewish

Sharon:

Manfred was my father's brother. Karl Hoffman was German. Many Germans, Jewish and Polish have similar or the same last names. Sometimes the Jewish names have "sky" at the end as opposed to "ski" at the end for polish. Manfred did not want his mother to remarry so he lied about his age and went into the Army. Karl Hoffman lost his wife and young daughter to an illness. My grandmother was a friend of theirs, she would help take care of them and she had lost my grandfather when he was 47 years old. Karl Hoffman was my father and my mother's boss at the company they worked for. Manfred was upset that she remarried. When they found out how old he was he was sent home. He carried on so that my grandmother agreed to sign for him. Three months later he was killed in his first battle.

Dotty

Re: G. Phil Hofmann

I am also searching the Hofmann Family. The G Phil Hofmann
you are searching was born November 15 1852 and died
June 4, 1953 and is buried in Zion Cemeteryin St. Louis
County, MO. He immigrated to this country in 1870 when he was 18 yrs. old. He married Louisa Schwartze September 3, 1874. This is not my great grandfather; however, he is probably my great or great-great uncle. My great grandfather was Phil Hofmann born about 1823. He died in
1882 and is buried in St. Peters Cemetery, St. Louis County, MO. You can obtain a copy of the death certificate for G Phil Hofmann at State of Missouri Archives. They
have the digital form and can print a copy at no charge.
Just key in "Missouri State Government", then click on
Government, then Click on Executive Branch, then click on
the Archives, then click on the SOS and you will be able to bring up the 1920-1958 Death Certificate page. I also
found the marriage record in Ancestry marriate file. I hope this was helpful for you. Laverne Blattner
Hi kenny4766,

excuse me that I come into your discussion, but the spelling of the Hofmann's name is rather a qustion of the region, where the person lived, than of the religion. There is no jewish, catholique or protestant spelling. If you go to www.verwandte.de, you will see, that the name Hofmann apears mostly in the southern part of Germany and the name Hoffmann in the northern.

Greetings from Germany

Felix Hofmann

thats my family...positive....because the german immigrants came to america through an agreement with the royalty of england...and remember....england owned america at the time.....because of this the migration of johanne hofmann....who later while in america was referred to as john hoffman and then later john huffman..was well documented....in fact theres a groupm tree on ancestry.com called "the clans of madison county:" and your part of that clan....you have to ask for access to there tree which i have already have done....there are photos ,documents...maps.....its amazing...like i said...because the colony of madison county...earlier called.."germanna"..was commissioned by the royalty of england to make a settlement there and mine for silver, its well documented...more so then most settlements of that time...so were blessed with having access to 230 years of our ancesters records and documents of how they settled america......go to ancestry.com and look up the clans of madison county and ask to be aloud to explore...you will be asked how your related...answer with whatever you know and they will send you an email allowing you access.....good luck and stay in touch

the list of names you mention is my family tree .so we must be related along the way......my name is ken huffman....johannes is my great grandfather 5 times removed ....he came from germany to virginia around 1720.....his first wife died giving birth and the baby was stillborn that was 1729....there first child was born in virginia in 1722 so i'm guessing they got to america around 1720......anyway the last name was spelled hofmann in germany but soon as his children were born there last name was spelled like mine huffman although some of the childrens are spelled hofmann by the second american generation they were all spelled huffman.....i met a german history teacher who claims that germans spell my last name huffman and german jews spell it hofmann....so we may have a jewish connection though i have only that one teachers opinion....i also noticed when doing searches on ancestry i find alot of my relatives easier when i change the soundex to jewish instead of german.....dont know if any of this helps but it is interesting......johannes is connected to a tree on ancestry called "the clans of madison county "...if that helps...you have to ask permission for acess i just did i had to give this guy gary from texas my email so he could send me the acess code....he asked my connection to the clans of madison county and when i told him he gave me acess....try contacting him he may be able to help you

My Hofmann, Andrew, came to Wood County, WV. His cousin, who came from Hollrich also, was already located here. I do know that Andrew had a brother or cousin named Christopher Hofmann who lived somewhere in the U.S., but I have yet to ascertain where he lived. I have his picture that he had sent to my Andrew. I don't know if it was Philly or not, but possible. When did your ancestor arrive in the U.S. and when was he or she born?
Becky
Yes, my Hofmanns stayed in the Philadelphia area. Anthony (my great grandfather) was a baker. He had 7 children and all of them stayed in Philadelphia. The majority of the grandchildren also stayed in that area with a few leaving. Hope this helps and hope we can find some connection. Here is my email if you want to communicate directly. kathy4610@hotmail.com Thanks

My Hofmann came over from Bavaria in @1859. I'll have to look it up to get the exact year, but I think that is correct. I am not certain where he landed, but he ended up in West Virginia. I have never heard of any of his siblings being in Philadelphia as most of them stayed in the Hollrich area, but that doesn't mean that there could not have been some. Is your Hofmann line still in the Philly area?

Hi :)

I have a cousin in New Hamphire, but my family has been in Europe until the 1990s, my cousin moved quite recently. He also does not know I am doing ancestry research... ;) But I can try to hook you up, if you want. As far as I know, my branch of Hof(f)mann came from Sachsen (Saxony/"Mark Meissen") and then moved into Silesia, they were weavers and ended up on the better end of the industrial revolution, setting up a large factory for textiles. Form Silesia they escaped into Austria at the end of World War 2, I live in Vienna now. Were these Ho(f)manns in Bavaria before? I have no idea...

Oliver and Becky...

I am a Hofmann family member and am searching for links to family from Philadelphia and as far as I can tell from the Bavaria area. Either of you have family in that area? Thanks in advance

Kathleen

My direct male line is Hoffmann/Hofmann, I never heard anything about a jewish ancestor, but now I had a YDNA test done and I have haplotype E3A, which would heavily point towards a jewish male ancestor. Maybe there is a connection here...?

There is no jewish or non-jewish spelling for Hoffmann or Hofmann of Hoffman. These are all different German spellings for the same name. The variations result from differences in pronounciation across the different regions of German speaking Europe. The areas close to France and Poland had dialects where Hoffmann would be spoken with a short "o", Austria and Bavaria would have Hofmann spoken with a long "o", North-West Germany had Meyer/Mayer/Maier instead, all of these names mean "(farm) manager". In my family the spelling was changed when people moved from one region to the other, for example.
