Hello,
My connection to William Hoge and Barbara Hume is different than yours, so I probably can't help much. Mine is William>William>Solomon>William>Kenworthy>James Clayton (my 2nd great grandfather). They were mostly from Loudoun Co., VA and then Kenworthy came to Ohio. The relatives I knew were from Massilllon, OH. Also, James Clayton's wife and three of his children ended up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

I search every lead and have found a lot through old newspaper archives, grave stones, personal property tax records, wills, and estate appraisals. I also Google the names of some of the married couples and where they resided. Doing this has brought up a few bios. Check with the counties they lived in, too. Some have old records and can help you.

Best of luck in your search.

~Elizabeth

I have traced my ancestry to Will and Barbara. thru their son, William>George>William>Jesse>James A.> Samuel > Grady Hogue of Blacksburg, Cherokee, SC. Grady was my grandfather. His mother, Alice P. Martin also came from Hogues,(I hope from a different line!) Alice < Mary Ellen Hogue Martin < ? Hogue and Malissa Stewart. Do you have any info on this line of Hogues. They mostly resided in York Co., SC. Can you help?

I'm sorry to say I'm stuck on "my" Hoges in Arkansas and Missouri in 1850s, so I haven't traced anyone anywhere before then. However, the "end"of my lineage is in North Central Texas. There are Hoges in Southern, Texas, too. They are also on his message board.
Good luck.
Carol Hogue Beck (The spelling was changed sometime after 1923 - no one knows why).

Hello again. Just to remind you...you emailed me several months back and we were supposed to get out "minds" together, one of these days. One of my main focuses this year is to really work on genealogy. I have recently found a link that I think may have found William Joseph Hoge's father and his father. I don't remember if I gave you the information I had from William Joseph till today. Email me back at carolsbeck@yahoo.com and we'll get started again.
Carol Hogue Beck
Maybe in future.

Is your Joseph Howe the one b 1729 - d 1794 or a later person? Joseph is my 4th g-grandfather. I also have a Joseph Howe, son of Maj. Daniel Howe. He would be my 2nd great uncle, I think.

I concur about the relationship between the Howes in the U.S. and Viscount Scrope Howe. I've seen nothing that indicates there is any kind of connection. I fear the Howe connection to England will remain a mystery.

When (if) I plan a trip to Sunnyside, I will reach out to you. If you decide to go there, please let me know; maybe we can collaborate.

Regards,
Bill Bates

Did you obtain permission from Mr. Kirk to visit the Howe cemetery? Joseph Howe is my 6th grandfather through Rebecca Howe. I do wish to visit Sunnyside this fall to see Joseph's cemetery and would like to obtain directions and permission as well. I've done some research and have learned that Joseph Howe was not a brother to the Viscount Howes (Richard and William), nor the son of James Howe (son of Lt. Gen Emanual Scrope Howe), as per many undocumented Internet claims. He may have been the son of one John Howe, Gentleman of Woodford, Essex, who disinherited his eldest son Joseph in his probated will of 1747 (Prerogative Court of Canterbury). This Joseph was baptised at St. Bartholomew by the Exchange (London) in 1704. Thank you. Thomas Wilson

My husband is a 4th Great-Grandson of Daniel Howe. We have gone to the Dublin VA area 2-3 times to try and see the house. We were given directions by a family member, but were told that the cemetery is not accessible to the public---we have taken pix of the gate leading to the house etc, and from the road you can see buildings in the distance. There is a NO TRESPASSING sign by the entrance to the long drive leading to the homes. I am sending you the directions we received a few years ago to find the location of Sunnyside--they follow:

"If you want to get to the vicinity of the cemetery, take Route 100 north out of Dublin, Pulaski County, VA, to Highland Road (about 4 to 5 miles north of Dublin), turn right on Highland Rd, go about one and 1/2 miles, and you will see two old stone pillars and a gate on the north/left side of the road. We have attached a photo of this gate and the view into the valley. Sunnyside was across the valley, along Back Creek. You will probably need a detailed map to find these roads."

If you are interested, I can send you copies of the photos we were able to take, from the road. It is possible that by now the road, and therefore the cemetery, is more accessible, but I don't know how to find out that information.

Anyway, hope this helps. Good luck!

Dianne Terrell

Hello, I'm very excited to hear from you!!! My Hoge family also originated in Pommerania. They were from the towns of Treptow, Belbuck and Gutzlaffshagen. I've traced them back to the early 1830's. Please contact me (mzblueiz@yahoo.com). It sounds like our families could be connected!!

Carol

Hi,
I try to get to the roots of my family, at least as far as possible. I live in Poland, Pommerania site to be exact. My family lives here for over 100 years and that is documented. Unfortunately there was a fire in the office before the war and it is difficult to get the info now. There is a possibility that Hoge family came here from Holland as my city used to be first trading port in Poland back in the 18th century. Well, anyway, I just thought someone might help or look for more traces. Good Luck

I don't know anything about Isabelle Repass, but have been collecting data trying to find the family of my 2nd great Grandmother, Hannah Hoge, born 1806 Greene Co., Penn.
I am a descendent. Curious on why they got married there. Have photo of Charles Wheeler. Not sure on who had family in the area. Was able to track down some of John Hoge's kin but do not have anything on Isabelle Repass. From what I was told her mother died giving birth & she helped raise her siblings. She supposedly lived with her grandparents & grew up on one of the Harrison plantations. So, the answer to your question...anything & everything.
Thanks

I too have been trying to connect Barbara to the documented Humes. What was your source for Sir James's brother bailing Him and William Hoge out of Jail? I have been unable to locate either of them on the roster of persons imprisoned in Dunnotter. My research has led me to believe that there are a few discrepencies in the old story, but I can neither prove or disprove that.

What I have found is a book (i'll have to find the name again in my notes) written in 1890. This book make reference to a "Miss Hume" who came to Perth Amboy around the same time as Dr. John Johnstone from Edinburgh. She is listed as his sister's daughter. The book states it is not known what happened to her parents. Dr. John Johnstone came to the colonies willingly in Dec 1685 on board the "Henry and Francis" the "Caledonia" made that same journey leaving one week before the "Henry and Francis". This is the same John Johnstone who married Ephram Scott. Interestingly, Ephram's parents both died of some kind of pestulence on the journey over and John Johnstone became her protector. This is all well documented. Ephram's father was George Scott Laird of Pitlochie who had been in prison as a dissenter but was released on the condition he cammand a ship of prisoners to the colonies.

So where does this leave Barbara? My current theory is that she was orphaned in Scotland and William Hoge was some sort of friend of the family who accompanied her to live with her uncle. I am not entirely convinced Sir James was even imprisoned as a dissenter because I have not found one James Hume in any list of dissenters. But I am almost 100% convinced that he never made it to the ship. I think it is possible Ephram and Barbara's stories got mixed up. I also think it is possible the date 1682 comes from documentation of a William Hogg in the colonies in the year 1682. This man, however, was a surveyor for William Penn. He has a completely different documented wife and list of children and is clearly not our William Hoge.

The Hume families I am currently researching as possible ancestors for Barbara are Humes of Blackadder, Manderston, Hume of Home, Ninewells, Kimmerghame and Coldenknowes. These families all link back to the Humes of Wedderburn and intermarried a lot. I do believe the David Hume Sir James is supposed to have been the great Nephew of is David Hume of Godscroft.

hello, i just want to say that Barbara Price's information matches what I have found to be true. William was NOT married before Barbara, he married Mary Hardin (sp?) after the death of Barbara, which then her name became Mary Hoge... and from what I can tell, they (mary and william) didn't have children together since they married in their older years.
I believe that the will that Barbara Price posted confirms this. :)

I have been trying to solve this frustrating wall for months. The "Caledonia" reportedly sailed in 1682 carrying Scotch Irish settlers to the colonies, however, it made another journey in 1685 one week before the "Henry and Francis". This journey was captained by Lord Neil Campbell and carried prisoners banished to the America's. On board the "Henry and Francis" was Dr. John Johnstone from Edinburgh. I have come across a book published in 1899 ("New Aberdeen or the Scotch Settlement of Monmouth Co. NJ". written by James Steen A.M. counselor at law) that states a "Miss Hume" (his sister's daughter) came to the colonies at the same time as Dr. Johnstone and was sent to live with him upon landing in NJ. I am starting to beleive a simple error in transcription was made and the Hume family was aboard the "Caledonia" in 1685, not 1682. I hope if this is indeed the case, more leads can open up to the lineage of Barbara. One more thing, Barbara, by legend is the great grand niece of David Hume of Godscroft a famous Scottish author and historian who is descended from Robert the Bruce by his grandmother Allison Douglas. David Hume of Godscroft is from the Wedderburn line of the Hume/Home clan. This prestigious clan intermarried A LOT and all members are descended from the Earls of Dunbar and Kenneth MacAplpine the first recognized King of Scotland.

I am a decendent of Barbara Hume and William Hoge. I would be very interested in your sources linking Barbara back to Robert Bruce. I had originally linked Barbara's father James with the line of George Hume of Wedderburn and Katherine Morrison, this line goes back to Robert Bruce, but all of my research lists only one son George born in 1641. All other attempts to link James to the Wedderburn family further back or even other lines of Humes have been fruitless. I haven't erased the information I've collected on the Barons of Wedderburn, because I'd hate to lose it and then discover a link. I would love any new information or documents to site for this family!

Hi! I have seen parts of that Hoge book, but my ancestry link is one of those that the author did not elaborate on. My 3rd greatgrandfather was Jesse A. Hogue whose father was William,I believe. He was born @1823 in Rutherford, NC, but lived in York Co.,SC. His father William is supposed to be decended from William Sr. and Barbara Hume Hoge through their son, William Jr. and his son George. I am having touble confirming the link from William Jr. to Jesse to my satisfaction, so any info you have would be most appreciated.

I've just started genealogy, and only have my side of the Hoges (from Texas) to Arkansas in 1880. There are several Hoges here in the south, none of which seem to be related to me. My grandfather changed the spelling of Hoge to Hogue sometime in the 1920s. I have been unable to find my line before that. Don't know if this is a help.
Carol Beck

My grandfather, Everett was the son of William Joseph. Lucy was Everett's sister. A note talks about Molly Hoge (5 years old) dying in 1889 and buried south of Van Buren. HIs mother was Mary Moyer and had a stepbrother named D.M. Watkins. Everett changed the spelling of the Hoge name sometime in the '20s. I have all his info since 1880, when he was 21. Contact me, please. 940-665-1100 or carolsbeck@yahoo.com.

I am the great granddaughter of W. H. Hoge whose mother was Mary Henderson Moyer. He was a stepbrother of Daniel Watkins. Please email me at carolsbeck@yahoo.com for any info on Everett that you need. The earliest I've been able to find Everett's father, W.T. was in the 1880 census, but have all of Everett's history. Or you can call me at 940-665-1100.
Thanks, Carol Beck.
