I'm related to Loraine Butler. Doing research on this family. I have very little info as she was adopted after her mother passed away in 1932. Please contact me if you can help.
I need to know why they are listed as the Holbert family on earlier census prior to 1930, then as Butler after 1930.
thanks
Jane

Descendants of EBENEZER HOLBERT (d.1770) of Morris Co., NJ, and of his son CAPT. JOHN HOLBERT (d.1829) of Orange Co., NY

Ebenezer "Holiberd" first appears in the Rockaway section of Hanover (Morris Co.), NJ on 14 Aug 1745 for the baptism of his dau. Mary in the records of the Presbyterian Church of Morristown, NJ.

To date, he has been identified as Ebenezer "Holbert", son of Thomas "Holbert" (i.e. Hurlbut) of Norwalk, CT based solely upon his being presumed to be one of the mentioned parties in the following document:

"Abstract of Probate Records at Fairfield, County of Fairfield, and State of Connecticut," by Spencer P. Mead, L.L.B. Volume 10, 1748 - 1755. Page 215: ‘Holbert, Thomas, late of Norwalk, Jan. 24, 1754, letters of administration on his estate granted to Ebenezer Holbert of Norwalk, CT, page 503’.

However, it should be noted, that had that estate-administrator Ebenezer Holbert been a resident of Hanover, NJ at least 10 years prior to the letters of estate administration being granted in Norwalk, CT in 1754, then he almost certainly would have been referred to in those letters as "Ebenezer Holbert of Hanover, NJ" and not as "Ebenezer Holbert of Norwalk, CT."

It should also be pointed out, that while there are no other known Hurlbut-family relatives in (or anywhere near) the Hanover, NJ area at that time (or for many decades afterward), that 1745 is also the same year that William Hulburd III of Enfield, CT first appears "out of nowhere" in the same Morristown, NJ Presbyterian Church records as inferred thru the marriage of his dau. Mary on 21 Jan 1745 to their Mendham, NJ neighbor John Aber II.

Furthermore, William Hulburd III (baptized in New Haven, CT) had a younger brother Ebenezer Hulburd (bap. 15 Jul. 1705 in New Haven, CT) of which nothing is known following his said baptismal entry.

Based upon the above, it is my belief that the Ebenezer "Holbert" who first appears in Morristown Presbyterian Church records in 1745 is more probably the younger brother of William Hulburd III of Enfield, CT, than the son of Thomas Holbert/Hurlbut of Norwalk, CT.

Ebenezer Holbert of Hanover, NJ had several sons, all of whom seemed to relocate sometime after the close of the American Revolutionary War to the area in or around Goshen (Orange Co.), NJ. One of these sons who removed to Orange Co., NY after 1783 was Capt. John "Holburd" of Sussex Co., NJ, who appears as "John Holbert" in subsequent federal census records there.

The only way to indisputably verify the ancestry of Ebenezer Holbert of Hanover, NJ is thru the Y-DNA analysis of his Holbert-surnamed male descendants. The Y-DNA profiles for both the unrelated Hulburd and Hurlbut Families is already known thru the efforts of the Hurlbut-Hulburd DNA project. DNA testing is conducted thru a swabbing of the inner cheek sent thru the mail, to a highly reputable and well-known testing facility.

If you are, or know of, a Holbert-surnamed male descendant of Ebenezer Holbert of Hanover, NJ, then greatly reduced and/or possibly free DNA testing may be available to settle the question once-and-for-all, regarding the ancestry of Ebenezer Holbert of Hanover, NJ.

If you are interested, please contact me, D. Michael Iradi, at dmiradi@gmail.com

Yes. He had only one more, which was me. He was not married to my mother Beatrice. However, he did get married to one more woman. Her name is Marietta. She had a son and daughter from a prior marriage. They never had any children. They lived in Matamoras, PA. They were also seperated at the time of my father's death. She married my mother's brother Jim after my father passed away. I do remember Kenny and Jimmie from a family reunion back in the 1980's. I think Jimmie had a daughter named Jamie around my age. The last time I saw them was at my father's funeral. We showed up at the very end and my oldest brother LeRoy demanded that I receive one of my father's flags. Needless to say, Karen was not too thrilled about this. I do know where Karen is, but we do not speak. She didn't like my mother and I would assume this was because they were close in age. At the time of my father's death, I was 8 yrs old. He passed away from renal failure. I am not sure what caused this though. No one would ever tell me. The only answers I ever had were "I don't know."

I have a great-grandmother with that name, or at least Ida M. Holbert, and she is buried in Brashear, Texas, I think. I remember that she is very "native American Indian" looking in her pictures, and I remember her, even though she died when I was only 5 years old. We are having trouble following her line, as in the census, she as 1 year old, her mother 20-21, and her father, John Holbert was 71 years old; so, we think that he was actually her grandfather or great-grandfather. Please let me know if you have found any other information.

Hi Krystal
Thank you so much for replying to my post.
I hope the name of this man is familiar to your dad as I am getting absolutely nowhere!
My friend, that I am doing the search for is actually Charles Holbert's daughter, so I would tread very carefully when asking your questions as it may never have been known in the family and she does not want to upset anyone.
He was serving in the US Navy and based at Holy Loch in Scotland when he met her mother. He knew of the pregnancy and asked her to join him in the States. She declined and after the baby was born put her up for adoption and left her home, so even if he tried to find her later on he couldn't have! This baby girl, my best friend, was named Sharlene Cassidy, her mother was a Cassidy, the Sharlene was for her father. Her name now is Alison, she was born in March 1968 and is a lovely person, who just wants to know about her roots. She managed to trace her birth mother, but it was not a very happy reunion, sadly and did not give her any information about her dad. Her mother has now passed on, Alisons 2 daughters are grown up and she wants to have a final try at finding her dad or any relations she may have.
Sorry if I've rambled on a bit.
Take care, God Bless
Lesley

When I was doing my research I found out that on a military record the name Holbert was misspelled Halbert. This caused problems for the man and he was unable to collect his pension. The man was the father (I believe) of Hattie McDaniel whose mother was named Susan Holbert. You might also want to check the name Halbert. They lived for a time in Witcita, Kansas

Hi my name is Krystal Holbert-Reynolds. I am originally from Kansas and I am an African-American. It is possible that Charles is related to me. My grandfathers' name was Orville Holbert and he lived in Kansas as well. He died January 2008 a few weeks before his 93 birthday. I did a little research on Holberts and found that we orginated on a plantation I can't remeber where it was. Anyway all of the slaves were named Holbert so I could not determine whether we were actually related by blood or simply by the fact that we all lived on the same plantation. I also discovered that the lady who played Mammy in "Gone With the Wind" was a Holbert. Again I am not sure whether it is a blood realative or not. I am anxious to see what you find out. My dad is still living so I will ask him about this man.

Hi
Thank you for responding, I appreciate any help I can get as I have so little to go on. The only possible I have been able to trace is through the various naval websites a Nathan C Holbert, who fits the timeframe, but who has sadly passed on and I can find nothing on his ethnicity. If you do come across the name I would be real glad to hear from you
Thanks again
Lesley
