No, on going back. They didn't list family members prior to 1850. So I'll probably have to find something of Clayton's, i.e. death certificate or something with his father's name on it. I just have to find out where/when he died. He might have been buried in the back yard or in a pasture, I don't know.

Have you gone back any further than Clayton? I just found something that gave me Stark in Putnam County, Eatonton, GA. I am looking for cemetery he may be buried in. Also, along my other line, Shirling, I found a lady who may be related but was married in Savannah to Winborn Odom. She is buried in Eatonton. I am not getting to that line until I can go backwards to see if it is mine. Too many unknown Shirlings and Holcombs. I would never get off the computer.

Debbie

Oh, I forgot to say that I paid for ancestry for a year back in 05. It helped then because nothing else (familysearch) was available. I tried to start a tree, but I think ancestry took it off because of verification. I haven't looked to see if it's still there.

Lee

Where are you getting your info. Do you belong to the Ancestry membership? If so, is it worth the money? I would like to join but I don't know if I will do enough research to justify paying for it.

I also found Diskin, but I couldn't put him with Clayton. Are you saying Clayton moved to Texas or just Diskin and his family? I will see what I can find on him too. According to you, Martha is his daughter and after her mother left the picture, he married Margaret who was the same age as Martha. Am I on the right track with this now? Is that what you are showing. There are a lot of Holcombe's in the Riverdale area, Lola Mae Jones was married to Romilas, My ggrandparents, They had 8 children and they all stayed in the Riverdale, College Park, and Hapeville, Ga area. One of my cousins worked in the Hapeville police department, a dispatcher, I think. Some of them are buried in the College Park Cemetery. I also think that Stark and Clayton may have owned a general store. I found an artile on Milus about 15 years ago, can't find it now, where he was sitting in front of his store in Riverdale. I also found a statement about Stark and a store, so I believe the store was passed down. I have tried to find the newspaper article again but the internet has grown so much that the newspapers are not available. You might find something about that if you can search news articles. Milus was born 1876, Stark, 1851, Clayton, 1814-1818. My grandmother Annie Ruth Holcombe was born 1909.

Let me know if you find anything I can follow up on.

Thanks for all the info you have given me.

Yes, I have him in the Ga 41st. On Martha, I think she is the 0-5 female listed on the 1840 census. She has been listed with Clayton every 10 years except 1880. My g-g grandfather Hosea was born in 1869. He is listed as 10m on the 1870 census. So Margaret is his mother. The 1880 also lists George L 9y, Martin L 6y, and Job 3y. I haven't done much with Stark other than a 1900 census and the church records I found on line (have search again for site). It says He and Nancy transferred their letter form Mt Pilgrim Lutheran Church, which is in Haralson, Ga, still active, to an unnamed church in Sanoie (Senoia) and that Clayton and Elizabeth just transfered their letter, unknown where. I figure they all lived around Starr's Mill, Senoia or Haralson. the county line runs between Senoia and Starr's Mill. I'm trying to track a Diskin Holcomb that was b 1801 and lived in Fayette around the same time. In 1850,he was 49y, had a wife Bartilla 44y and a daughter, Margaret 15y. Might be Clayton's brother as they were the only two listed in that time frame. in 1870 they were near Dallas, Tx where he died 14 Nov 1916.

Okay, educate me more. I see and understand what you say, but I don't have anything on William or the other children with the E E. I find the Elizabeth A and Clayton with the kids I showed you. But, why is Martha and Margaret shown as the same age after he marries Margaret. I must be missing something still. I think I found where both were Whaley's but I can't seem to track that part now. I am not insulted, I am still trying to track the Shirling-Holcomb line. I did find that my great grandmother Holcomb/Allen is traced back to Morris Harris who is Jeff Foxworthy's and my GGGGGgrandfather out of Madison County. Are you related to the Vernon-Holcombe or the Whaley-Holcombe? I have a section of a book on Holcombe I could send you and it will give a link to more Holcombes if you want.

Now, back to the lineage. Do you have Clayton as part of the Georgia 41st Infantry Regiment. It seems you have a lot of info I could use to track. I can't find good connections to the Shirling/Holcombe line. What do you have forward from Clayton and Stark/Newton/Nathan? I know the census is screwy because have the wives didn't know how to read or write, so they couldn't spell their own names. A lot of the spelling is guesswork. I have Sherlan, Sherling, Shirling, Shierling, Shurling spelling to consider. My name was Shierling until WWII when my great aunt had the 'e' removed because it is a german name and she was afraid the government would put her in a concentration camp like the Japanese. Go figure.

Please do let me know how we connect, maybe you do have a lot of info to help me.

Okay, you asked for it. lol. I'm a critical thinker and assumptions are hard for me. I don't want to insult your intelligence. I've learned that some assumption is necessary with the census' and the census takers. The people listed on a page are neighbors, census takers visited each home and wrote what they were told. You've noticed the difference in spelling I'm sure. You also have take into account the date of the census and the month a person was born. If their birth month was after the day they were visited, they would be listed a year younger than you figure, ie born Sep 1869 on an 1880 census, conducted in June, it would show 10 years old. If you subtract the 10 listed on the census you would get a birth year of 1870, when in fact they were born in 1869. With that said, the ages are not always exact. Then I try to think about the history of Ga. It started small on the east side and grew west and north around 1830 when the Indians were pushed out. I could go on, but I will try to explain what I think starting with what I know. Clayton was born between 1810 and 1820. He was married to Elizabeth Vernon in 1849. He was married to Margaret Whaley in 1869. In 1862, he joined the civil war, but only stayed in 3 months and was discharged in Tupilo, Ms. There's more but this is getting long. If you print each census, or the cover sheets on familysearch you should see what I am going to try and explain.
I think Clayton was married to his first wife on the 1840 census, she was about his age, they had two girls. Something happened to her after that. He married Elizabeth in 1849, she already had a son named James. On the 1850 census, Elizabeth is E. E. and 28y, Marhta 11y, william d 8y, charles r 7y, Mahala A 4y who I think is Matilda on 1860 census, Jas R P 2y is James R Vernon on a 1860 census. The next family on the census is William 56y and Sarah 51y Vernon. I think these are her parents, as William is listed on 1860 census. In 1860 Nathan S 9y appears. I think this is Stark. On the 1870 census he is listed as Stark N 19y. I could say more, but if you print out everything it will make sense.

On my record, I have Clayton and Elizabeth A Vernon Holcombe with 4 children, Nancy, Annie, Stark N and Ellen.

On that 1850 census the kids do not match. I checked the 1870 census with Margaret Whaley and Martha is listed as 30 years old and Margaret is also 30 years old. Kids are Stark 19, Nancy 22, Annie 16, Mary 14, Ellen 11, Mollie Whaley 9, Lucy 3, Holcombe, and Hosea 10 months. Mollie is 9 which probably makes her Margaret or Martha's daughter with a Whaley.

I think we have different Clayton and Elizabeth's but the same Clayton and Margaret. My Clayton b 1818. The 1870 census has him as 1818. The 1814 Clayton has different children. Margaret and Martha b 1840.

Go to Familysearch.org and pull up Clayton Holcombe, 1880 and 1850 census. You can determine if the Clayton is the same guy. I think we have two. Also, 1850 Clayton is in Coweta County until he marries Margaret then it is Fayette County.

Tell me what you think, please
Look at the 1850 census, it's a little crude, but it lists Elizabeth as E. E. Martha is 11. It also lists Wm D and Chas R. all too old to be Elizabeths with Clayton because they were married in 1849.

The William B. that I am referring to was with his first wife (maybe named Susana). He was b.1841/42. Charles R. was b.1842/43. Martha L. was b.1839 Mahala/Matilda was b.1846. In 1850 Clayton was 36 and Elizabeth was 28. I think she had a son named James P Vernon and her father was William Vernon.

Thanks Debbie,
I'm trying to research a group of people who traveled from Newberry, SC in 1828 and set up in Senoia. I have also found a Diskin Holcomb b 1801 in SC that was in the area around the same time as Clayton. It may be his brother/cousin or something. My great grandfather was Charles Hosea, my grandfather was Alvin Cheney Holcomb, my father was Franklin Moore Holcomb. There were some Holcomb's in Gordon Co around the time as "Hosey", that I am trying to identify as possible relation, maybe by William D. before he went to Texas.

Franklin Lee Holcomb

I'm trying to confirm that the Hosea listed on the 1870 census and as Hasey on the 1880, is my great grandfather. I have my great grandfathers family bible, marrage certificate and death certificate, the death cert has his father's name but it looks like Clu written in cursive. His birthday lines up with the two census'. But he went to Gordon Co after 1880 then got married in 1889. He was born Sep 1869.

I forgot to tell you. I found the death certificate on Charlie, that's the info I put in the post. I found Clayton with birth as 1818. Check on familysearch.org to see if you can find info on your side. It's free and if you become an indexer (tranfer record info to the website) you can get more access to other records. I index for the site. It is the Mormon genealogy website with lots of info as ancestry.com but it is all free. However, some states like Georgia, won't allow them to show the actual record.

They are getting the 1940 census and will start adding the info to the site.

Have a good day
Debbie

Thanks for the info. Where do you fall into line with this family. Clayton is my gggggrandfather, Lola Mae Holcomb is my g-grandmother. The story I have on her is that her father shot her mother because he didn't want to be married anymore. She went to live with another woman. That is all I have on that. So my info is real sketchy.

If you get anymore info, please let me know.
Thanks
Debbie

Oh, I found a death of William D in B'ham that listed Susana as his mother and Clayton as his father. Looking at the census from 1850 that makes scense because Martha is too old to be Elizabeths. An 1840 census lists 1 male 20-30, 1 female 20-30, 1 female 0-5 and 1 female 5-10. From what I have found, Clayton was born in 1814.

Grimes Holcombe was the illigitimate son of Barbara Holcombe. He was indentured to Joseph Gresham of Albemarle County, Virginia in 1763 for the purpose of becoming a carpenter. This is probably the Barbara Holcombe that later married Joseph Rash. See charts on Ancestry.

Thomas Gresham b. abt 1685 is said to be the son of Henry The Quaker Gresham b. 1652 in Malvern Hills, Henrico, Virginia. Rhoda married Joel Watkins in 1751, but had to have her mother's consent. The Watkins were also from a long line of Quakers. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you.

Pleasant Holcomb (1832-1911)

I am trying to confirm my holcomb(e) line. My GGrandmother is Lilly Holcomb. I can confirm the pedigree up to Pleasant using census, death, and marriage certificates. I read somewhere that his father was John R Holcomb, but I can't remember where I found that.

I have linked this line back to William the emigrant through public stories and such. I am looking for some kind of confirmation that I have this line correct and possible some published works to back it up if there is any. If anybody can confirm or clarify please let me know. The line as I know it is as follows(All last names are Holcomb or Holcombe):

William (b.? d.1722 VA)
John (b.1685 VA d.1750 NC)
John (b.1712 VA d.1779 NC)
Lawrence (b.1748 VA d.1827 NC)
John William(b.1776 NC d.1826 TN)
John R (b.1811 NC d.1862 IN)
Pleasant Monaville (b.1832 TN d.1911 TN)
David C (b.1869 TN d.before 1900)
Lilly M (b.1891 TN d.unknown)
