I don't think I have a Thomas in my line with that birth date. Do you know where he was born? Mine seem to originate in Buckinghamshire and then later London. There were lots of Holderness families around that area so may be a connection to find at some point?

Hello, I have just read your post on Ancestry.co.uk. I have been researching my family since 1993 and can tell you that I am connected to Lazarus. It is confusing as there were several Lazarus's and George's. George Holderness was born in Horton and died approx 1714. He had a son Lazarus born approx 1681 in Horton. He married a Jane and died on the 5th June 1756 in Horton. He had another son called Lazarus who I only have a death date of 1748 in Langley, Bucks.

He had a brother George who also had a son called Lazarus who was born in approx 1766 who married Catherine. They had a son Lazarus George Holderness. After that I require more details of your line.

Lazarus George was married three times. He was a widower by the time he married Mary Ann Delasalle in 1851. His 3rd Marriage was Bigamous. He was found Guilty and confined for six months for Bigamy at the Central Criminal Court on the 14th Sept 1857 he was 61 years of age. His occupation was given as Shoemaker when he married Mary Ann.

I go right back to John Holderness born approx 1575.

Look forward to hearing from you. Please use my email address gunner3380@yahoo.co.uk

Best regards,
Keith

I may be related to Lazurus Holderness. I have traced my line back to Thomas Holderness who was born in England circa 1787. He later moved to Halifax Nova Scotia, Canada. He had one child, George Holderness.

Unless someone in England has some very specific records (as Thomas was a common name), the best bet for establishing a connection is via a DNA test. A few of us Holderness males have taken such a test. I would strongly encourage other Holderness males to take the test. It is very simple and cheap. It is how genealogy is now going.

Please feel free to contact me through this board or directly at holderne@bc.edu.

Clifford Holderness

Does anyone have a connection with Lazurus Holderness born in Horton, Buckinghamshire in 1766 approx, England or any of his descendants? He married Catherine West Ingram in 1795 and I descend through his grandaughter Mary Ann Holderness born 1826 in London who married William Henry Stevens in 1857 and moved to Leicestershire eventually. I think I have Lazarus's line going back to George Holderness sometime before 1665 in Horton so someone out there must have a link to my line?

It concerned George Holderness and her own descent through Mary DeLasalle. She had seen a very old post of mine on the Abney cemetery website and we definitely share the same tree at some point
Rosemarie

Thank you! I've so far found four Rashdall/Rashdales - it's handy having such an unusual name as you can be sure it's the right family!

I found the William H born in Halton Holegate and knew he must be joined to this Rashdale (I was guessing brother) as he has a Rashdale(b.1844) for a nephew mentioned in the 1861 Census. I've not been able to find where this nephew Rashdale comes from either

Thanks again - I'll have a search through the IGI, see if I can find any more info.

I have the following info which seems to relate. You do have the right parish so reviewing the files from there may bear more fruit.

Rashdale Rastal Holderness b 22 May 1797 Halton Holgate, Lincoln England. Son of John Holderness and Mary ???

Wife, Mary Ann
Children: Mary Ann c 1820
John, c 1821
Charles A, c 1823
George c 1825
Andrew c 1838

No guarantees on the info, I believe it probably sourced from the IGI that might be another place to go.

Additionally, Rashdale Rastal H had several siblings as follows.
Mary, c 1799
John c 1801
Henry c 1803
Maria c 1805
Robert Cross c 1807
William c 1809
all born in HaltonGate

I have some dates on above as well. Contact via email if you are interested.

Hope this helps, Chuck Holderness

p.s. I also have mention of another Rashdale who had a child Ernest c 1889. This Rashdale was son of Spilsby H.

Hi

I'm looking for any information relating to Rashdale Holderness, born about 1798 in Lincolnshire (possibly Halton Holegate).
Dear Dave,
Many thanks for your reply and death information. Both Charlotte and Frances Martha HOLDERNESS are part of my wider family and I only knew that they were still alive and unmarried in 1911. You have now kindly 'killed them off' which is something I always try an do.
Best wishes,
Mike Horton

You're welcome Mike. I also wondered how Vanda ended up in Bracknell in 1861. On a different surname, I located the GRO death indexes for Charlotte Holderness and Frances M. Holderness, and am wondering if these are what you are looking for. I didn't find evidence that either had ever married.

The indexes follow:

Deaths Jun 1916

Surname First name(s) Age District Vol Page

Holderness Charlotte 76 Staines 3a 16
____

Deaths Jun 1931

Surname First name(s) Age District Vol Page

Holderness Frances M 71 Staines 3a 25
____

Kind Regards Mike,

Dave

Dear Susan,
Many thanks for the baptism of the child John Thomas and then finding him in the 1861 Census as a visitor back in Uxbridge. This might help to confirm that Sarah, the mother, was away and in London where I found a possible entry in 1861. It still leaves the mystery as to where the father was. By a coincidence, my grandparents lived in Uxbridge and I stayed with them for many school holidays and so I knew the town very well although it has changed out of all recognition since the 1950's.
Best wishes,
Mike Horton

Dear Susan,
Many thanks for the marriage details of John HOLDERNESS and Sarah YEOMAN as I only knew that they married in the March quarter of 1852 in Uxbridge District. Your details confirm that I have the correct people as my John was a Whitesmith and his father was Thomas, a shoemaker. I have found Sara in Marylebone, Middx in 1861 with a 2 month infant but no John. Have you any idea what happened to them after their marriage.
Best wishes,
Mike Horton

Dear Dave,
Many thanks for the baptismal reference of Vanda NURTHEN and the additional one for her brother was a bonus. I wonder how she ended up in Bracknell in 1861, perhaps she was taken with the family when they moved out of London. Anyway, I really do appreciate your help.
Best wishes,
Mike Horton

Re: Vanda NURTHEN

Hello Mike,

I located Vanda’s baptism record at the Ancestry.com subscription website, which confirms the date of baptism you have for her in St. James, Paddington as 18 January 1844. Her date of birth is not given in the record, which shows her parents were Richard and Eliza Nurthen who were living in Harrow Road at the time the baptism occurred. Richard’s occupation is given as shoemaker. A note by the clergyman who performed the baptism, J.W. Buckley, states, “Privately Baptized.” This is an indication that Vanda may have been baptized at home rather than in church because of illness. But, that is just a guess. A transcription of the record follows:

London, England, Births and Baptisms, 1813-1906

Name: Vanda Nurthen
Record Type: Baptism
Date: 18 Jan 1844
Father's Name: Richard Nurthen
Mother's Name: Eliza Nurthen
Abode: Harrow Road
Profession: Shoemaker
Clergyman: J.W. Buckley, Curate
Notes: Private Baptism
Parish: Saint James, Paddington
Borough: Westminster
County: Middlesex

Source Citation: London Metropolitan Archives, Saint James, Paddington, Register of baptisms, P87/JS, Item 008
____

I also located the baptism record of a another child of Richard and Eliza Murthen. This is for George Murthen who was born on 13 November 1839 and baptized in St. James, Paddington on 26 June 1844. I could not make out the name of the clergyman who baptized George:

London, England, Births and Baptisms, 1813-1906

Name: George Nurthen
Record Type: Birth/Baptism
Birth: Nov 13 1839
Baptism Date: June 26 1844
Father's Name: Richard Nurthen
Mother's Name: Eliza Nurthen
Abode: Harrow Road
Profession: Shoemaker
Clergyman: ?
Parish: Saint James, Paddington
Borough: Westminster
County: Middlesex

Source Citation: London Metropolitan Archives, Saint James, Paddington, Register of baptisms, P87/JS, Item 008
____

I also found 19 year old Vanda in the 1861 census working as a kitchen maid in the household of John and Anne Coningham, in an address of Heath Street Lodge, Winkfield, Berkshire. John Coningham must have been very wealthy. He was a merchant for the East India Company. Along with Vanda, there are eleven other servants in the household:

1861 England Census

Civil parish: Winkfield
County/Island: Berkshire
Country: England

Street Address: Heath Street Lodge

Registration district: Easthampstead
Sub-registration district: Bracknell
ED, institution, or vessel: 13
Household schedule number: 86

Source Citation: Class: RG9; Piece: 756; Folio: 81; Page: 14; GSU roll: 542696.

Name, Relation to Head of Household, Condition as to Marriage, Sex, Age, Occupation, Where Born

John Coningham, head, Married, Male, 43, Merchant, East India, Middlesex St. Pancras
Anne Coningham, Wife, Married, Female, 42, Ireland
Elizabeth Dasent, Sister, Married, Female, 48, Middlesex St. Pancras
Charlotte Dasant, Niece, Unmarried, Female, 15, Middlesex St. James Westminster
John Russell, Servant, Married, Male, 31, Butler, Middlesex Hounslow
Emily Russell, Servant, Married, Female, 30, Housekeeper, Suffolk West Stow
Ellen Craske, Servant, Unmarried, Female, 18, Housemaid, Suffolk West Stow
Elizabeth Buckner, Servant, Unmarried, Female, 27, Housemaid, Stoke?
Re: Holderness name.......

Not that I know of. My mother's husband was a Thomas Holderness and they lived in Leeds, Yorkshire - till he left and went to Bridlington, Yorkshire. There he died of TB in 1945/46. I don't know much about that side of the family - my brother Arthur Holderness did eventually start researching his name, but he passed away a couple of years ago, and his son has no interest in pursuing it.
Am not 100% sure, but I do believe there was a Reverend ? Holderness in a parish in Lancashire who had at least 2 daughters. Didn't think Holderness was a common name, but perhaps it was a couple of centuries ago up North in Yorkshire, and perhaps some of the men immigrated to the new Americas! Perhaps we're all related, distantly, as Colin Powell apparently was to Princess Diana - distantly!~

Good luck, thanks, and take care!
Val....

Was your Tom's wife Fannie Clark by chance? I have him born in Coningsby, Lincoln, England; may be January 01, 1820

He had a son Tom in 1857 who died in 1867.

Fannie was buried in Rolfe IA.

Does any of that fit your info? I have a few generations back from Tom to Robert/Robert and a parish in England if any of that would help. I note your post was several years ago.

Contact me by email if it works for you.
