Re: Holloways in Eastern Tennessee before 1850

It's now 2012 and so I am not too sure this thread is active anymore seeing how the last post was in 2008.

I am a direct descendant in the Holloway line. I have been able to trace my line back to South Carolina and Virginia (Charlestowne) I have a ton of Robt's and Martha's and Williams' and Charles' in my line. Of course anyone researching knows that before 1860 it becomes very difficult to trace families by census. So then you resort to wills and estate documents. Hopefully you can find land owners neighboring each other that belong to the same family.

I do have a Martha Ballard in my tree, but my memory doesn't place her in North Carolina. I will have to go back and check. My earliest memory with facts attached, would be of Jesse H (assumed to be Hartwell) Holloway from South Carolina (born) and residing in Alabama, where he is laid to rest. Jesse and his wife and a number of children, many being from her first marriage, I think. One of his sons was my gx4 Richard Louis Holloway married Martha Woodfin. They are recorded in Alabama. Richard and Martha then moved their family across the border to Giles, TN. Robert, William, Richard, Charles, Thomas, Susan, George, and a couple of others (not in order by ages). Jesse's son Richard Louis Holloway was shown to have been born in Edgefield, SC. and later moved to Limestone, AL. with his family. Married his wife Martha in Limestone and had their 1st 5 children in Limestone. a couple of the children were born in Giles, TN and then in 1870 they packed up the entire family, sons and their new families as well, and relocated to Texas. From Navarro county and then on down to Falls County. Falls County is where Richard Louis and his beloved wife Martha lay their heads and hearts. I have seen people following my own line continue further up the tree to Jesse's father, but I have not been able to find written proof of kinship. So I have copied their trees, but continue to do my own research... if anyone is tracing the same line... please contact me. juliedpowers@aol.com or here on ancestry.com.

I've known since I was told when I was young. The Daughters of the American Revolution have all the records concerning the Holloway families. I believe their website is free to use. There is also a Sons of the American Revolution for the men descendents to join. Just type in John's information in the Patriot Lookup box on the DAR or SAR website. My granddad and my family traveled from VA through NC through GA to Coffee co AL looking at each homestead and family history was thoroughly discussed at each place. John was severely injured during the 1776 war and it took him months to recover. He was never the same after that. They moved south to Bulloch co GA, along with his younger brother William. Their dad was Vermillion Holloway and he's buried on the land of the other son, Thomas, along with Martha,(2nd) wife and Agnes(1st wife).

Hi, Janice...I don't know if I contacted you on ancestry.com or not, but I saw through someone's tree that the father of old John Holloway, RS (1745-1818), husband of Ann Griffin (1752-1810), was a man named Vermillion Holloway, from Henrico County, Virginia. How was this discovered?

Thanks in advance,

Bill Scott

I am looking for any possible information on Ruth Holloway: who she married, where she was born/lived, when she died, the names of her children, etc. I only know of one of her children who is named David Holloway born about 1887 in Americus, Georgia. He married Mattie Jones Holloway who was born about 1895 in Macon County, Georgia. David and Mattie had 9 children together named Sarah, Marvin, Amos, Marie, Albert, Sam, Hosey, Mathis(?) and Willie(?).

ANY information on Ruth Holloway would be greatly appreciated. If anyone has any information on Mattie Jones Holloway as well, that would also be helpful.

Thanks in advance!
William Holloway b 5 Nov 1784 Surry Co.,VA md Winifred
Holleman dt of Joseph of Surry.

This is my line thru Joseph Holloway b 1811 Surry who settled in Hendricks Co.,IN abt 1831. He came to In with his
father and then father went to Tenn for 5 yrs and then back to IN. I believe the Wm in Morgan Co.,IN md to a Margaret is
Joseph's father. I believe he is Zachariah's father and Winifred is his mother.

I thought that Billy Holloway's father was Wm John1726-1764???? Trying to figure out how Wm b 1784 was related to the Holloways in Knox Co.,Tn. They seem to all migrate to the
same places re Cass Co.,TN then KS.

We too are stuck on the Bermillion that (we have 1720). We have one son named Thomas but no wife or parents. We have done pretty well from the son back to us but have hit the brick wall on the daddy. Contact me at emmausfan@cox.net and I'll be happy to share what we have, if you head that way in your search. If you are from Sally Proctor we have a wealth of info on that line.
Hope we can join our forces together and get this wall down and we can move on to other "hiding" folks.
my cousin and I have been working on our Holloway tree and have run across a snag, there were two Bermillion Holloways, one born in 1720 In Henrico County VA and one born in 1747 In Orange County, N.C, the latter of the Bermillions was married to Sally Proctor (we have a lot of information on the Proctors (Jamestown and other things). Our delima is that we can not find any info on the 1720 Bermillion except that he had a child named Thomas. We alternate the names from Thomas to Bermillion back to Thomas (Not too much ingenuity in names but I guess if you have so many children reruns are the way,) If you have any information on 1720 Bermillion and back I would appreciate it.

I was wondering what books you bought. I would like to use them for my research on subject. John Holloway is not connected to any line of Holloway's. I descend from the line connected to Samuel Mathews. I have read that there is a controversy as to whom was his wife. It could either be a Greville or a Hinton. Do you have any information on that?

Nearly 11 years after my original posting, I can't recall having heard anything more about the Holloway band of pirates. However, I did find that a John Holloway, an attorney and the first mayor of Williamsburg, VA, and identified as "a constant patron and advocate of pirates" was retained to represent William Howard, Blackbeard's quartermaster from the ship the "Queen Anne's Revenge." Thanks for your interest.

Holloway remarried to a Bertha Jane Fowler. I know at least Cherokee County, Gilmer County, Floyd County, and Troup County GA. But they were close enough to border of Alabama and spent time there and had family there. If I have my information correct the grandfather would be a William Holloway and the grandmother was Ophelia (Coggins)Holloway.

Thomas Holloway of Worcestershire

My Gt.Gt.Grandfather was Thomas Holloway a saddler born in Worcestershire sometime in the late 1700's. He married Jemima Phillips of Maddresfield on Feb 7 1815 at Malvern. They had three sons Richard Martin, Thomas and Charles Reuben (d.1831) I believe only Thomas survived, he became a carpenter/joiner and later settled in Croydon. Thomas & Jemima moved to Cheltenham and ran a pub/beerhouse in Larput place "The Saddlers Arms". I am looking for Thomas's birth. Regards Norm

Firstly, I recommend that you repost your message with a different subject line, like the one I put above. It will help draw more people's attention to your request. "UK Holloways" is too generic, and often that will make people overlook the post.

--Jill Hurley
(I also have Holloways from England)

UK Holloways

My lot came from Worcestershire. Thomas Holloway (a saddler) married Jemima Phillips at Gt. Malvern Feb 7 1815. She came from Maddresfield. (Father, John Phillips, Mother Ann)They had thee sons, Richard Martin, Thomas and Charles Reuben. I believe only my Gt. Grandfathere, Thomas survived childhood. Family moved to Cheltenham around 1840 Thomas the younger was a carpenter who later settled in Croydon and raised a family. Tom & Jemima ran a beerhouse, the Saddlers Arms in Cheltenham. I cannot trace Thomas prior to his 1815 marriage. Any clues out there? Cheers, Norm Holloway (NZ)

My grandmother, Mary Viola Holloway, was born in 1900 in Holly Spings, Ms. She was the daughter of Thomas Holloway. I have check back to 1747 with a paper trail bit I have a name but cannot prove the connection of , I think, V(B)ermillion Holloway in Rhea County Tennessee (1720-1840)
Tonight I have been looking through the Colonial Army and cannot get a connection because of Bermillion connection. I did prove tonight that Thomas was in the Civil War. Let me hear from you if you think we have family together.
Rhea Houck Phillips

Ruth Holloway

Holloways from Emly, Co. Tipperary, Ireland

We are looking for any information on James Holloway who married Bridget Hart in Pallasgreen/Templebredon, Co. Limerick in 1853. James died in 1886 and Bridget died in 1907, both in Emly. We believe that they had 11 children - Michael, Catherine, Mary, Margaret, Winifred (died young), Bridget (died young), Bridget, Winifred, William, John, & Michael.

We think that James may have come from the Galbally area of County Limerick, but are not sure. Any information would be gratefully appreciated.

Do you have Steve, James, Clifford(this is his middle name, Lum (Columbus?) and or Henry Holloway in your family. I know these were all brothers and there were more, but I don't know of a George. They are also from GA and most moved to Dade-County FL.
