I would like to enter a conversation about my grandfather panko (pantilemon) Homyak. His neighbor helped him send for a wife--Anna Wysowatcky--to Globeville (now Denver) in aabout 1895. My Dad's cousin was Chura. Panko immigrated in 1887 (according to 1900 Denver census. He talked about Galicia, the Carpathian Mountains and leaving home because of conscription and because his Father broke his (Panko's) violin. He lost a leg working for the Globe Smelter and he became a cigar maker. He was one of the founder's of the Orthodox Church in Globeville.

I do not have a Pantilemon Homyak in my files that fits this time frame. In the church records "Homyak" was "Chomiak". The name Pantilemon often was often converted to Panko in the U.S. In the church records I have sometimes found it also as "Paulus". Metro or Mitro here in the U.S. was "Demetrius" in the church records.

Check with Beverly Barnhart who often replies to queries on this site. I think she may be able to help you.

Albert

It is from 2000 so I don't know if I can still contact the source.
Egnatz Chura was the brother to my Fred Chura. Egnatz was the one living in Steamboat Springs.

This is me, Barnhart on the other messages. I have so little on my Homyaks. I did know the Chura family in Steamboat Springs. We stayed with them and went ski-ing many years ago. My father (john Henry Homyak Sr, son of Pantilemon) told me they visited the Chura family when he was a boy. He said there were a "lot" of children and they were a little scared at the visitors.

You can check my other posts from 10 March. My grandfather was Fred Chura and my grandmother was Anna Memovich. They attended the Church of the Transfiguration in Globeville and lived at 45th and Logan. They were married in Globeville in 1902. Mary Homyak was a witness. I love that little church.

My father was John Henry Homyak. His father, Panko (Pantilemon) came to the US from Austria Hungary in late 18 hundreds. Panko married Anna Wysowatsky in Globeville. The globeville Wysowatsky's sent for her from the "old country" they had 5 children (all deceased) Panko was one of the founders of the Church of the Transfiguration. Are your relatives buried in----Yeah--I just went through a file and found what I think is a baptisimal certificate and there is a Maria Churra listed as mother. I will try to send it. The baptized person is Elias BB

My Grandfather was Fred Andrew Chura (Ciura and various other spellings). His parents names were Andreas John Chura and Anastasia Nikita Stefanov. I know very little about them. Fred Chura was born in Priluki, Sanok, Austria-Hungary 22 July 1876. By 1902 he was living in Globeville and lived there all of his life. He was married in the Greek Orthodox Church but then the Church of the Transfiguration was built (he and his father-in-law helped in the building of the church) so the family became Russian Orthodox. I spent a lot of time in Globeville as a child and have very fond memories of the neighborhood and the beautiful church. The last of the Chura children (there were 7) passed away last fall at the age of 96.

Hello Ivan Kohut,
I'm Paul E. Vargovich, I live in Lorain, Oh. My great-grandmother was Maria Kohut Dorcak. They lived in Nizny Tvarzec, Slovakia. Maria Kohut married Joannes Drocak. Maria & Joannes had these children. Son Joannes, born 26 Dec 1869, Nicholas, born 15 Dec 1873, Anna, born 23 Jun 1876, Georguis born 4 May 1879, Josephis 12 Apr 1882, and Maria 28 Dec 1884. Anna Dorcak married Felix Olsavsky in Baggaley, Pa Jun 1902. Anna went back to Slovakia 1906 and Felix Olsavsky stayed in Baggaley, Pa. Felix was killed in a coal mine accident 14 Oct 1910. Anna Dorcak Olsavsky remarried in Slovkia to Adam Repka. Anna Dorcak and Felix had 3 children, John, Maria (my mother, born 1905 in Baggaley, Pa). Anna had a another daughter, Verionka born in Nova Lubovna, Slovkia Jan 1907.
I had a researcher in Slovakia find information about Anna Dorcak. His name was Michael Sura. Michael went to Nova Lubovna and Nizny Tvarozec, Slovakia. Michael sent me pictures of Nova Lubvona and Nizny Tvarozec. Michael didn't say who the people were from Nizny Tvarozec.
I was born in Hostetter, Pa 1941. Baggaley, Pa is the next village.
Joannes Dorcak married Zuzna Fellegi 31 Oct 1898. I have a cousin, Nancy Dorcak that had Michael Sura check information for her. Some members in her family disagree about who Joannes Dorcak married. Maybe I can get this corrected.
Thank You for contacting me. God Bless, Paul E. Vargovich

My name is Ivan Kohut, from Bardejov, Slovakia. I've been living in NYC since 1996. I've stumbled upon these threads and I recognize all of those surnames like Homyak, Dorcak, Jurochko, Zapach...Kohut, obviously... My father's name is Jan Kohut from Nizny Tvarozec, nicked also as Panko...All these up-mentioned names have Nizny or Vysny Tvarozec origin.

I have to talk to my aunt......as she is the only living relative I am in touch with that knows ANYTHING about our family history. I have been to Riverside cemetart myself MANY times as we ised to go as a family. Was never sure why. I was very young. As far as the church. It was called the russian-serbian orthodox church. The building is still there but has since turned into a different church many years back. Globeville was about 10 minutes away from where I grew up. Years ago I use to have a book from the church with pictures and names and has been lost over the years. Had MANY pictures in it of many of the church elders and congregation. Where are you from?.....I WAS from Denver. 37 year native until 5 months ago. I am in SC now. Would love to hear from you.

I also went to Riverside cemetery where I found Anna Wysowatcky's gravestone. Let's share info. This is the first I have heard of Kowal. If you could send a copy of the picture of your ancestors wedding (just at Kinkos), I will send you postage and cost. Maybe I can tell you if one of the attendants is Panko.
I have a picture of Panko playing a cello and another man is playing the violin. They played at people's weddings. I will be happy to copy that for you.
B Barnhart

I have hundreds of Homyak (orig. Chomiak) surnames in my database originating from the villages of Dubne and Leluchow, now Poland, near the border of Slovakia. These were transcribed from church records and reconstructed into family groups. The most complete data is from about 1790 to about 1880. Contact me by personal email with a name and birthdate and any other information if you have a Homyak ancestor from this region. I may be able to provide a family tree (no charge). Many other Carpatho-Rusyn family groups are also available originating from these villages.
Albert

I have not come across this spelling "Hromyak". Variations I have come across include Homyak, Homiak, and Chomiak. My guess would be that Hromyak is a different name or variant of a different name. You might want to explore this surname with the Czech list serve group at CZECH-D-request@rootsweb.com To subscribe enter the single word "subscribe" (without quotes) in the message area. It is a very active group and the subscribers are very helpful. If you find that the original name of your grandfather was some variant of Chomiak, send me some names and dates and I will try to match him with the names in my files. Good luck.
Albert
