Re: Hook(e) Surname Group

As far as I can tell the Hook family in the UK and US comes from a settlement into the IOW of a Frisian Tribe that was based around Denmark and Holland. They spread mainly around 2 areas one being the English South Coast around Sussex Surrey and Kent and the other Gloucestershire and Devon (still the highest concentrations of Hooks in the UK. My family were based around Bristol sometimes going as far as Devon, Birmingham and even Wales. One of the Bristol lines became Mayor's by way of Sir Humphrey Hooke (born Chichester) and it was his family that went to US as part of first settlements and seems went to Ohio.
My family are Bristol based and I have traced back to Mid 1700's We were very much associated with 2 Churches in Bristol St Phillips and St Jacobs (built pre 1170) and St Mary Radcliffe (built late 12 Century) I have direct family members buried there. I think if I get back a couple more generations there will be a direct link to about 13 Century as there already published a number of Hook family trees from that date including Sir Humphrey's and one of the Visitation of 1623 which details a number of generations back from that date. So basically my family came, saw, farmed and stayed there for next 1000 years.
I think from the DNA studies it shows we came from an area now occupied by Romania but that goes back to the Iron age.
There are many theories about the origin being perhaps the oldest English surname. The best I like is that the Frisian Tribe had hooked noses and bent backs hence the surname Hook and unlike other Vikings had black hair not blond. If you want an image James Hook Welsh Rugby player provides a good image.
As regards Captain Hook well he took people away and I am sure Sir Humphrey would have been close to the slave trade so perhaps he was a character based on real traders.
About the crest it is blue and yellow with scallops (meaning on the way back from Crusades someone visited St James Crypt in Spain) and also the fleur-de-lys means on an English Coat of arms we fought the French and as a romantic English man I like both.
I have also met other Hook surnamed people and we do look alike even after many generations apart.
Hi James,

I am also a descendant of Thomas Leir Hook, via his son James Hook (brother of Augustus and Francis). Does that make us cousins of some description? We seem to be the same age!

I have heard about the Hooks being involved in lighthouses but can find no information regarding this – have you been able to source any update on this?

I also learned that Thomas Leir Hook was married to a Frenchwoman, Marie Therese Desta and that possibly (only remotely at this stage), we may have some link to John de Balliol – King of Scotland in the 13th Century. I spoke to a lady whose details I found on another website who stated that a branch of the Hooks married into descendants of John de Balliol but she doesn’t think it was via my ancestor James Hook (possibly one of his brothers married someone who had a sister/brother who was descended from de Balliol).

I just thought this information would interest you. If you have any information to pass back – that would be great.

Regards,

Steve Wilson

I am searching for information on Margaret, first wife of McKinney Hook. McKinney is a son of Belitha and Elizabeth Hook and was born in Worcester County, Maryland about 1771. He married Margaret before 1795. Children: Nancy (1795); Thomas (1799); Samuel P. (1803); and Matthias (1808). The family moved to Kentucky and McKinney died in Pendleton County, Kentucky in 1825.

I want to learn the maiden name of Margaret and where and when she died; presumably, in Kentucky.

In the Will of Anadasiah Riggen, written in 1817, she named Margaret Hook, wife of McKinney Hook, as her sister. I do not know if Riggin (Riggins) is a marriage name for Anadasiah or a birth name. Many beneficiaries named Crapper/Cropper were also named in her Will. Any information would be appreciated.

My line settled northern Maine with Henry Knox, then moved on down to Ohio.

I would love to have photos, particularly if the patriarch's stone still exists (Humphrey Hooke).

Thank you,

Kimberly Hook Martin
beardieluver@aol.com

We have a Daniel Hook also but he was born in Philadelphia in Abt 1812 and died in Elmer, Salem Co., NJ in 1884. He was a farmer. I did see your Daniel through the years in the city directories but I know now he was not really related to our Hooks.
Thanks so much for your reply.
Suzanne

Looking for info on John Hook, potter, living in Philadelphia in the late 1700's. I am descended from George W Hook born in Philadelphia in 1823. I believe his parents to be William Hook and Martha Murphy and that William's father is John Hook, potter, born around 1750. We think John came from England but have no concrete evidence. Any information you might have on this family would be appreciated.
Suzanne
PS There is an abstract from his will on Ancestry.com

I may have hit pay dirt for both of us. In a 1870 Ohio census, I found Nancy Robinson, 48, Lotecia, Sarah, 15, Martha A. 14, Henry W. (whom I think may be my gggrandfather), Nancy E 9, Emma 8, and Joseph F 6. I've also discovered in a different spot from where I found this census that Nancy b 1822 was married to Richard Robinson b 1814-1815 (found two different dates. If this is the family related to Henry W. Robinson, born 1858-died 1925, married Sarah Sands. I'm related and have info from Henry W. to today.

Parents look to be in their 40s, while the girls look to be about 12 and 8.

In the 1900 census for Vernon (Tolland Co.) CT, I found the only Hook family which matched the description, with girls the appropriate age. John Hook, born Aug 1844 England and wife Amelia, born Mar 1850 England – with their daughters Cora M., born Jan 1878 and Ethel V., born Dec 1881, both born CT.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to this Hook family.

Hello Tony,
I have been on this for nearly a year now, and Richard Hook, with a wife named Ann, is as far as I have been able to get back. No Parents, or Siblings, just in the S.F.H.G births, there children. Which says mother Ann.And Sedlescombe. There are Charles & Kath, bt 23.07.1732, twins as I said. Also a Richard & Joan, bt 02.06.1734,twins again.Henry bt 13.11.1738, He was my GGG grandfather, and My, who I think may have been Mary, bt 11.09.1740.I have the CD Rom, of marriages for Sussex, and there doesnt seem to be a marriage for a Richard and Ann, to in anyway coincide, with the childrens birth dates. The nearest Ann, is 24.05.1670, Heathfield, so she would have been to old, anyway I need somewhere in the Sedlescombe/Battle area. The only marriage in the sort of time scale I think I need, is a Elizabeth Giles 02.04.1730, to a Richard Hook.Any help would be much appreciated.
regards
Mary

to mwrochford.

My ancestors are also Hooks from Sussex. I have tentative ties to John hook 1703-1779, none of his siblings or children appear to have been named Richard. However, John's father appears to have been Richard Hook born about 1649, his wife was named Ann. If you are already aware of this information let me know, we may have some common Hook ancestors.
Tony Roach.

Great to hear from you. My slant on this family is with Lorena, Troy W. Hook's wife and the mother of Troy R. Hook. I belive that she was my grandmother from a later marriage. I would love to share information if you could contact me off forum at email: DarrelSifers@comcast.net..

Thanks

hello,
It is a pleasure to make contact with you. I am very interested in discussing information you may have on the Troy Hook family. William Stephen Hook was my grandfather's brother. William Stephen Hook was the sheriff of Drexel MO and is buried in the Freeman MO cemetary. I can't remember if his son Troy is buried there or not. But other descendants of William Hook are buried there. I have family photo's and much information on our side of this Hook family. As well as the ancestors of William Stephen Hook of Drexel back to England in the year 1642. And I would be very happy to share this with you. We have a Hook family website for this Hook family.
What I would really like to know is more about Troy Hook's descendants. I know he had a son named Troy who disappeared in 1973 and is presumed dead by his cousins who still live in the Freeman Drexel area.
I do know that Troy Hook the second, son of Troy Hook the first was married to a woman in Oklahoma City, OK who's name was Bonnie. She had one son named Troy Hook the third. Troy Hook the third was born about 1959 or so. Troy Hook the second divorced Bonnie and remarried having two other children. One named Robert Hook and another named Brenda Hook. Both being born sometime in the 1960's. I understand both of Troy Hook the second's families lived in the Oklahoma City area.

Robert Berenger
I am the son of Lois Hook daughter of Grover Cleveland Hook Sr. Grover Cleveland Hook Sr. and his brother William Stephen Hook were the sons of Thomas Madison Hook and his wife Mary Margaret(Bentley)Hook.
