Hi Kathy,

I'll check through my records and get back to you. The names don't ring any bells at the moment. I hope there is a connection. My Hornby's were engine fitters and one was an Engine driver in York, so hoping this will lead me to Frank.

Speak soon
Justine

Hello Justine,
I am Frank Hornby's gr gr niece through his elder sister Anne or Annie as she was known. Their parents were Martha Tomlinson and John Oswald Hornby. Martha's parents were Elizabeth Windsor and John Tomlinson, both, apparently of farming stock.John oswald Hornby's parentage remains a bit of a mystery. His father's name on John's marriage cert. was Peter Hornby (a provisions dealer). The only Peter Hornby whom I have been able to track who appears a possible candidate was one who married an Ann/Hannah Coates and was transported to Australia for thieft.
Hope that answers your query Justine. If you would like to know more just contact me.

Regards,

Kathy Lee.

Well you have a real problem there. Obviously Thomas was a bit of a subversive. I can't see how else I can help you. If you think he went into higher education it might be worth writing to University of Sheffield to see if they had a Thomas Hornby on their books, they can only say no.
All the best
There are no brothers that I know of. Thomas Hornby (the Son)who emmigrated to New York was married to a Mary Patton first (who died) and then he was married to Eliza Duffy. Where they got married I don't know. As far as a transcription error is concerned, all of his children were named Hornby and I have the census through multiple years to confirm the name. In addition, my mother says, her mother's maiden name was Hornby. By the way, ancestry has transcribed Hornby as Harnby and whenever I use the search engine, both names come up. Harnby is an obvious mistake because I have the original census sheets listing the children with Thomas and Eliza. I went so far as to check the 1864 Sheffield flood for names or businesses, but to no avail. Is it posssible that in the 19th century Thomas didn't want to tell anyone his real home town because he changed his name prior to emmigrating? This is pure speculation on my part. There is one other thing that my mother told me. Thomas was well educated. Could he have attended the Univercity of Sheffield and claimed it as his home town?

I have been right through the census returns from 1841 to 1901 as set out by ancestry.co.uk. There is no Thomas Hornby born in Sheffield or indeed living in Sheffield. The reason for this could be that the surname has been incorrectly transcribed from the original records to ancestry - this periodically has happened in the past. There is another way you can get round this problem - did Thomas who married Mary have a brother? (easier to deal with than a female, since their name changes) if so you could look on the census records for the brother's name and possibly find Thomas via the backdoor so to speak.

No there is only one Sheffield in England. I had a look at the birth entries from 1843 to 1932 - no Thomas Hornby born in Sheffield. Where was the census return taken that is in your possession? I hate mysteries.

Thank you for replying. My sources are 1) My mother who is 91 yrs old and was given the information by her mother who was Thomas Hornbys' daughter. 2) I have Thomas Horbys' Death Certificate showing his parents names and his age at the date of his death which showed he was born abt 1844. 3) I have a census record that states he was from Sheffield, England. I think I have some very solid sources. Is it possible that there is more than one Sheffield in England?

Are you sure you have the correct information as to where your Hornbys came from? I cannot see any reference to your family on the census records. My John Hornby did not come to Sheffield until the 1890s so cannot be related to your family. His parents and grandparents came from Lincs and then Notts. I would check your sources if I was you.

I too have Hornby's that lived in Sheffield in the 19th century. The father and mother were Thomas and Mary. The children were Thomas and Susan. The father was a roofer. (I don't know what they call that occupation in England). I have hit the proverbial brick wall with them. Is there any connection to your Hornby's in Sheffield?

I would be DELIGHTED if you have more information about this family tree that you discuss in your note to Carol.

I am also wondering about the Sir Phipps Hornby lineage since my family claims that we are related to them as well, probably as cousin, but I cannot make the connection.

Thank you for whatever help you may lend to my efforts.

Barbara French (Eugene, Oregon, USA)

Hi Keith, Thanks for the update I'm interested in the Hornby's that settled in Liverpool as a number originally came from Kirkham. The Hornby family from Kirkham were "Sailmakers" and Baltic traders, they intially imported and exported via Skipool on the river Wyre and also from Lancaster on the river Lune. Do you have a GEDCOM file of your Hornby family tree, perhaps we could swap GEDCOM files and research notes? Regards Mark

hi there -
I have just begun to investigate my husband's side of our family - the Hornbys. His father has passed away and I haven't been able to find anything much. If anyone has any info I would be most grateful to receive it.
My husband is Colin John Hornby born 1958. His father, William Archibald Hornby born in 1920. His father was William and he had a sister who did not marry - Alice. There was at least one other male sibling who apparently committed some deed which left him excommunicated from the family. Their father was William - not a lot to go on I'm afraid!!
cheers
LIZ

Hi Mark,

it's been a while since I posted this and I must admit to being (happily) surprised to finally get a hit. Since I have posted things have become slightly clearer but this is certainly a bit of a dead end for me.

My records agree with the info you have posted, though I had not known that Andrew had come to Australia (where I live) and died here. I haven't found any mention of him since reading your post, but will continue to look for him here.

I see you are quite the Hornby hunter, and I am curious to know where these two branches connect.

I believe that Caleb Hornby married Ann WISDEN
13 SEP 1828 Clayton, Sussex, England # 7707450
and appears to have died in Somerset in Dec 1842.

I would love to hear of any other info you might have.

Thanks for the post,

Mal

I have a note of George Hornby born abt 1875 in the Everton area of Liverpool. In the 1891 census he was a bricklayers apprentice, I cannot find him in the 1901 census, he could have emigrated. His father was William Hornby born 1832 and became a "Shipwright", William's father was Daniel Hornby born 1796, also a "Shipwright". Daniel's father was Thomas Hornby born abt 1760 and was a "Sailmaker".
If you want anymore info about this branch of the family please let me know
Mark
