HELLO NEILL
THANK YOU FOR YOUR REPLY.
I HAVE NOT HEARD OF YOUR GRANDMOTHER BUT AS MY FATHER WAS
ORPHANED BY 12 YEARS OLD IT IS HARDLY SURPRISING THAT HE
DID NOT IMPART SUCH KNOWLEDGE. I DO NOT HAVE A PICTURE OF
MY GRANDFATHER BUT I LIVE IN HOPE. THROUGH FAMILY RESEARCH
I HAVE BEEN GIVEN A PHOTO OF MY FATHER AND HIS BROTHER
TAKEN WHEN HE WAS 17 WITH HIS MOTHERS FAMILY WHO TOOK THEM
TO DURHAM WHEN THE CAPTAIN DIED.

I LIVE IN CHELTENHAM, GLOUCESTERSHIRE AND I HAVE ALSO FOUND
A HALF BROTHER AND SISTER THROUGH FAMILY RESEARCH - THEY
LOST ALL FAMILY PHOTOS ETC WHEN HOME WAS BOMBED DURING WAR.

SYDNEY THE BROTHER BORN 1904 DIED IN CANADA IN 1965 FLOODS

Dear Lynda,
Thank you for replying to my note!
I don't believe we are part of your family.

My grandmother Miriam Allport was a very close friend at one time of your grandfather. She worked on a ferry boat as a stewardess and sailed to Copenhagen and perhaps Bergen. I know she also lived at Hull and at South Shields. This would be between 1905-1912, or so. I know she worked on the same boat as your grandfather.

I am interested in what ferry line or boat(s) they worked on. I would also be interested to see a photo of your grandfather if possible.

Have you ever heard of Miriam Allport?
Do you live in the UK. because I know several members of your grandfather's family went to live in Canada.

Many thanks,

Neill - Windermere, UK.

Captain Reginald Downing Horncastle 1865 to 1919.

Lived at Hull (Kingston-upon-Hull) England and was a master mariner. Visited Kobenhavn in 1907, no doubt many other places.

Does anyone have any information about him as a Captain please?

I have his marriage in 1888 and a list of his children. It's his maritime career I'm interested in. I have also read his obit. in The Times of 1919.

Many thanks,

Neill.
