I'm curious about the Thomas "Parrish" Horseman family line. My stepmother created a family tree and even though the years seem to be slightly different, I'm curious if the Horseman family know anything beyond the marriage of Thomas and Easter Anna Redden. For instance, do the know the names of the children that came from the union of Thomas' second marriage. Also is there anymore information previous to Thomas Horseman. For my family tree, Thomas is listed as the first Parrish in the fourth generation slot with the name Horseman listed in the fifth generation slot and the rest of that part of the tree is blank. If I'm related to him like I think I am, that would mean I'm his great, great-granddaughter.

Charles Horseman and Grimes Families

Many years ago , when I first started genealogy research, I downloaded a gedcom about the Charles Horseman family. Charles was brought to this country by his father Joseph.
This was in the early 1720s. I believe it was from a Bob Cameron. Many things have happened since and I have lost all the information I had. My husband was seriously ill for many years and I am starting over with my research. I would be forever grateful if someone could help me replace this valuable information. Thanks so much in advance. The Horseman family eventually married into the Grimes Family in Ohio.
Momgra

Do you know the names of the Horseman and Grimes that married in Ohio or any dates? My mother is a Horseman and My Father was a Grimes and that is the only marriage between the two families that I have found in my research. They were married in Indiana. My mother's brother is a Charles Horseman also. My family line starts with a William Horseman DOB 1717-1720 I have lot's of information about that family line down my direct line to me. I may be able to fill in some blanks.

HORSEMAN - MILLS family - USA and Canada

Am curious to know if these two families are related some how. Found their names on the other gene web site, wwww.genealogy.com MILLS message boards.

Alice HORSEMAN married David JAMES MILLS 11 14 1844 do not have any place names for them.

Says Alice B: 9 25 1820 D: 12 5 1872
No parents listed.

David JAMES MILLS B: 3 16 1816 says Moncton Westmoreland, NB Canada.

The other couple:

Julia A HORSEMAN married Bushrod MILLS 12 21 1839 No Place name given.

Julia B: ca 1820 VA

Bushrod B: ca 1815 says Fairfax Co VA.
at least says he owned land there.

would love to know if there are any present day male MILLS of these two lines who might consider joining the MILLS DNA Project, to help clarify lineage.

Believe at one time, I checked a Canadian census, and David replied to the taker, that he was of Dutch orgins. And that was his ethnicity too.

A son listed for him, as Amasa MILLER MILLS, who is in the nearby area, and he replied that he was English orgins.

The two were not of the same religious affiliation either.

Not that the religion has a lot to do with it. Many families split not only for politics, against the colonists to break away from King and Country, but also because of
religious differences.
Am also very curious if any of David' family returned to the United States of America, later on after the conflicts had been settled.

Where that may be.

Thank you

Patricia
cw
Don't be surprised if it takes a while to get a response (like 5 years or so); I've found that genealogy is a hobby that is hot when the "mood strikes", and that I have to work on it when the other person is researching. Definitely not convenient - but it has loosened up some brick walls for me. I just hang stuff out here and hope someone will run across it.
Anyway, to order Military records go to the website:
http://www.archives.gov/veterans/ and download Form SF-180. You'll be ordering forms from St. Louis. They are older records and some were destroyed in a fire - so what you might get is an open question. According to the site - the fees are payable based on what they find.
Because he's long deceased and you are a grandchild, I'm sure you'll get all records that are available. All you can do is ask and wait on their response.

Drew

Hi Drew,

Yes, I did view that record and it is definitely my grandfather, as Irene Vansant is my great grandmother (his deceased wife's mother on my mother's side). So, no relation to him, except by marriage. I appreciate you taking the time to look him up. I did email the person you named who has him in their tree but no reply as of yet. I also feel his military records would be a great source of concrete information but wasn't sure what information I am privy to. Is it really just a matter of paying a fee? Who do I contact to request his WWI records?

Hi Again:
I've found that my family stories have a grain of truth to them, but the stories sometimes change when compared to the actual facts. (It could be a G-G-grandfather was killed in England or was an orphan)
As for spelling: I wouldn't put too much stock in the differences - just be open minded to them (census takers & gov't workers are notorious mis-spellers - some things never change). Anyway - in the 1790 VA census - there's a Horsemanden also - he probably isn't related, but you never know. "True" spelling is a relative thing: while your immediate family might be "Horseman", another relative used "Horsman" (and THAT happened in my family). Same family - different spelling - each is correct in their own contexts. It just makes it difficult to tie it all together - especially if you don't have wills/birth certificates, etc. to help. And the one thing I keep in mind is that even if my tree is perfect - I'm never sure that G-G-Grandma wasn't playing with the mailman. It happened.

Don't know if you have this or not: but this is from Maryland Military Men - 1917-1918:
Name: Roy M Horsman
Race: white
Address: Bivalve, Wicomico Co.
Birth Place: Bivalve, Md.
Birth Date: 23 Sep 1888
Comment: Ind 5/29/18 pvt; wag 3/1/19, 154 Dep Brig; Hq Tr 79 Div 6/20/18; Patient at Hosp 10/21/18; Hq Tr 79 Div 11/19/18; 4251 Brest Casual Co 8/22/19; 1162 Hoboken Casual Co 9/12/19, Hon disch 9/19/19, Overseas 7/8/18 to 9/11/19, Avocourt Sector; Meuse-Argonne; Troyon Sector
Maryland in the World War 1917-1919; Military and Naval Service Records, Volumes I & II
Serbian
Order of St. Sava

Also, there is someone with your grandfather in their tree: their Ancestry handle is "bizybee005". You might want to check that - it could give you some leads.

So here's where I'd go, if this was my brick wall. If you KNOW that the draft card from 1942 is your grandfather, I'd do two things: request his WWI military records - that should give you a mess of information. It'll cost you some but it's worth it usually. Second - Irene Van Stant is a tie in somehow - you might want to research her. Also, his draft card clearly states he was born in Bivalve - so heading down to Salisbury might help you a lot.

Drew

Hi Drew,

Yes, I agree that keeping this public is a better option, as I'd love some feedback as well. I spoke to my uncle (Roy M. Horseman's son) who believes that my grandfather (Roy M. Horseman) was an orphan. The story still holds that he had a brother somewhere in New York and that his parents were killed in an accident somewhere in Europe (they believe in England, but aren't very sure about it as my grandfather passed away in 1947). He was a WWI veteran and is buried in Annapolis. I was always told that he was of German descent, but with him being an orphan, who knows. We found a draft registration record from 1942 and we are sure it's him as he names a known relative as a person of contact, but the name is spelled "Horsemann", so now we are wondering if that's the true spelling. As if that's not confusing enough, my uncle recalls an incident in his childhood when my grandfather signed something and spelled it "Horstmann", but when he questioned my grandmother, she dismissed it and said the correct spelling is "Horseman". I'm pretty much at a total loss at this point because my mother, aunts and uncles were so young when he passed and my grandmother (Roy's wife) died in 1971, so there really is no one in my family who has any more concrete information.

Hi again.
Never hurts to put these things in the forum - we're talking family connections of 200+ years ago - and somebody new might stumble upon it and tear down a lot of brick walls. You never know.
Well, my thoughts that the families are related comes down to logic more than anything. The names are still spelled the same - and have been since that time; and the Chesapeake was a major port of entry in the 1700's and Loudon County/Fairfax and Salisbury aren't that far apart. It wasn't unusual to see families move around due to the price of farms. My understanding is that there are several good genealogy libraries around Salisbury - I live pretty close (2 hours or so), but I haven't had a chance to research that side of the family. There have been a lot of Horsemans from that area and I run into one once in a while - just can't say for sure how closely we're related.

Drew

Maryland didn't officially start issuing birth certificates until 1898 - however there may be birth records (or listings) out there. You should find them in the Maryland State Archives in Annapolis. You ARE authorized to obtain a copy of any birth certificate over 100 years old.
Second, if there are any street directories - they would probably be at the Wicomico County Historical Society in Salisbury.
As for the 1900 census - keep in mind that you might have two men by the same name and you found the incorrect one. There are lots of ways to misspell Horseman, so if the puzzle piece doesn't fit - keep searching.
On another note: there is a large contingent of Horsemans around Salisbury, Maryland. My family came across the pond and ended up in Loudon County, VA (the original William Horseman's land is part of Dulles Airport outside of DC). I believe that the two families tie in somehow - but I haven't found the evidence yet.

Hope this helps.

Drew Horseman (in Delaware)

According to military records, he was born in Bivalve, Maryland. I can't seem to locate him on the 1900 census, but think I found him on the 1910 census. He was married to who I believe was his first wife at the time (not my grandmother). Her name is Amelia and it shows just the two of them on the census. His occupation is stated as sailor, which follows logic to a certain degree, since he lived on a houseboat and was a fisherman according to my relatives.
No idea whatsoever. My Grandfather was born in 1888 and lived in Maryland all of his life, but he died long before I was born and we don't have much information about him. The death of his parents while in England is just what we've all been told. His death certificate does not name his parents.

Are you able to go back any farther in your Horseman line?
I can trace my family from William Horseman in Loudon County, Virginia in the mid-1700's and then my line moved to Bath County, Kentucky. I know there is a branch on the Eastern Shore, but I don't know how they tie in. William is a common brick wall amoung the Horseman researchers so I've been looking for a link to the Eastern Shore Horsemans. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Drew Horseman
Bear, Delaware

I was told by my father that years ago he had a man contact him with the last name "Webster" who was doing his geneology for his mother's side "Horseman" and one of the ancestoral Horseman's, out of 4 brothers migrated from Europe and was known as a pirate. Great legend but I'm not sure if it's true.

The 1890 Special Census of Soldiers Sailors Marines and Widows lists him as a Confederate. I'll be glad to collaborate. Jay

On Memorial Day '07, I spotted my family name on a large headstone in Forest Rose Cemetery, Lancaster OH -- Jane Littrell. The stone said HORSEMAN. I'm sorry I have little infomation on it, but wondered if anyone on this board might have information. It is possible (because of the other Littrells there) that this is Jane Littrell (b. 1842) and daughter of John H. Littrell (1810-1850) and Elizabeth Fox (1818-1893).

After a quick look, I only have the following children for William Horseman b1717-1720: Esias b1775, Abraham b1762, Jeremiah b1755 and the second William b1745-1749. His children are listed as Mimi b?, Signey b?, James b1765-1784, Esias b 1775, William b1776, Linny b1778, Stephen b 1780?, Joseph b1780. As you can see they overlap and have several children named the same, so I really haven't got any information that is usable. I am trying to sort out who is who. I do not list a Zachariah in either list. Maybe one of the above names will give you something to go on. Sorry I couldn't be more help. If you find out anything useful, please let me know.
Hi Drew
I can trace my line back to the original William 3 different ways. The direct way through my father's line goes William, William Sr., Joseph W., Whaley Jackson, James Thomas, Lennie, Holman, Jeffrey Lenn ( my father). The second way back is through Lennie's wife Sarah. Lennie and Sarah were first cousins. Lennie's father James Thomas and Sarah's father Fielder were brothers. If I understood your post correctly they were also brothers of your GGGgrandfather Joseph. The 3rd way I go back is through an adoption (thank goodness). Your GGgrandfather James had a brother named Charles. Charles married Ann Warren and they adopted (or raised) Eulah Barnes. Eulah later married my GGgrandfather Lennie. We have been unable to find out anything about Eulah's family or why she was adopted.

I have a lot of old family photos, but they are mostly of Lennie's and James Thomas' clans. I would love to have any old family info you could share.

Thanks and I hope to hear back from you.

Brian Horseman

My line branched off from your line at Joseph and Armon Traylor, and since most of what I have would be for the generations after that, I may not be able to help much.

This is my line. http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?o... Holman was my grandfather.

I am just a novice genealogist and don't have much, but would be glad to share what I have. I would also like to know what you have found out about our common ancestors from Joseph on back.

Thanks,
Brian

My Horseman lineage

I have been researching the Horseman family for several years, but have just in the last year been making headway. I am listing my direct lineage back to William Horseman b 1717-1720. I am trying to fill in some of the gaps. I came across this site by accident and am going crazy with the information here. I would like to have help finding out more information on my family. Anything you can help with is appreciated. I do have some information to exchange, but not a lot. I have dates and childrens names, spouses etc, but the more current I get the more I lose the threads to follow.

William Horseman b 1717-1720 d 1763 m Unknown 4 children
SON
William Horseman b 1745-1749 d 1814 m Helena Lay 8 "
SON
Joseph Horseman b 1780 d 1828 m Hannah Whaley 8 "
SON
Joseph Horseman b 1827 d 1911 m Armon Traylor 7 "
SON
John T. I know the family started in VA and migrated to KY and then a lot of them to MO. If any one can help me find websites to fill in the gaps I would REALLY appreciate it. I am on the go quite a lot and can't always answer your e-mails right away, but I will as soon as possible. THANK YOU

A daughter of Marmaduke (of Freehold) named Abigail was listed as making Second Declaration of Intentions of Marriage on 10/4/1716. Marriage partner was William Bunting (son of John) at Chesterfield, NJ (Burlington Co.) MM. Date of ceremony is in the digest of the Certificate of Marriage, published in the N.J. Archives, Vol. 22: 650-678. Another Horseman female is listed - Mary Horseman - but article doesn't state if she is a daughter of Marmaduke. She made her Second Declaration on 5/7/1724 with James Paxton of Buckingham, PA at the Chesterfield MM.
