Hi Kelly,

Can you tell me what evidence you have that Thomas Horwoods parents were Thomas Horwood and Martha Sweet? When Thomas, the elder, died in 1805 he left legacies to numerous nephews and nieces and all the unmarried daughters of John Sweet, but nothing to any children of his own. Personally, I believe that Martha, who was a widow at the time of her marriage was the mother of John Sweet and that Thomas and Martha were quite elderly when they married (around 60).

Look forward to your reply.

Regards,

Grahame.

yes you have correct details, I have been trying to get the death details of Sarah Maria, but not listed anywhere, not searching to see if she remarried after Joseph died.
It is Brian Horwood son of Philip Royal, also Harold's son Graham lives near to me, but he is a bit protective about information. My mother-in-law lives in the same flats as Brian, I will have to make more effort to see him.
Regards
Julie

Hello Julie

I was very pleased to receive your message as it had been a long time since you had posted anything on Ancestry. Can I confirm that you are the daughter of William Horwood and Eva Marion Mullinger? I have a document which lists you and your brothers (if I am on the right lines?!) Robin, Barry and John? I was interested to learn that Sarah Maria was an alcoholic as it explains some things. According to the 1901 Census, Royal was not living with his parents then either. Which of George's grandsons lives near you? My father is also his grandson but having been brought up in Wiltshire saw less of the family than those in Rickmansworth. He is in contact with some of his cousins though. Any thing more you could add would be great. Regards Julie

Hello Julie - Joseph Horwood 1844-1903 was my gt gt grandfather. His son George was my gt grandfather. I am trying to find information about George's wife Annie Susan nee Wright. I know this is a long shot but Royal Horwood your grandfather is shown on 1911 census as living with my gt gt grandparents George and Annie and I wondered if there may be any information which has been passed down about where Annie came from? They were apparently close to your grandfather as they named one of their own sons "Philip Royal". Regards

Re: The Langport, (Somerset), Horwoods

I have Horwood ancestor's indentified via Church records from St. John the Baptist Church in Pitney. George Horwood born 1821, emigrated to the US in 1848 with his wife Fanny Chard Hurd and children Mary Chard Horwood born in 1844 and infant son George born in 1848.

George SR parents were Thomas Horwood and Elizabeth Barnard of Pitney. He was a yeoman farmer owning 96 acres in 1821. In the 1851 census he is listed as a gentleman farmer. Thomas Horwood's parents were Thomas Horwood and Martha Sweet.

Fanny's adoptive parents were George Hurd and Mary Chard of High Ham. Her father was listed as owning 200 acres and was listed as a yeoman farmer. Family legend says that Fanny and George Horwood needed to leave England, as she was an illegitimate child of a British royal. She did receive a monthly check from England until she died in 1904.Fanny and George spent most of their lives in the US, in Wheaton, Chippewa County, Wisconsin. Their daughter Mary talked quite openly about being related, but who it was never named. At the time of George's death in 1871 he owed a farm of 200 acres, valued at $6,000.00 George and Fanny Horwood would be my gr x4 grandparents.

The Langport, (Somerset), Horwoods

Does anyone know about a family of Horwoods living in Langport, Som.,in the 19 C.,one of whom was called Farnham Basil? He died there in 1853. An ancestor of mine was baptised Farnham Bazell (1823) (and he had a younger sister called Godiva!) both born in Mells, Som. This Farnham was the son of James Horwood (bp. Mells,1788) and Elizabeth- (bp 1786). James was the son of James, (bp. Mells,1760)and Lydia Keevil (bp.1760, probably Kilmersdon)The elder James was my 5x g.grandfather. Apparently there are some Horwood graves in the churchyard/cemetery in Langport. Do any of them predate Farnham Basil/Bazell? (I'm sure they must be the same person)or did he start off a new colony of Horwoods in Langport?
I have traced the Mells Horwoods back to 16C in Frome, Mells and Nunney.Hope to hear from anyone with info. applegarth87.

Have just started on family research and found the marriage register of my great grandparents Robert William Valentine Allen and his wife Alice Lucy Bound in Christchurch, New Zealand. Also stated as parent is a Kate Horwood. Would presume this to be Roberts mother as it is not stated whose parent she was on the document. Anyone heard of her? Would be pleased to learn more.

Hi Gary

Danesbury and Eliza came back to Britain and he married Alice Watts on October 1st 1898 . They had 5 chidren Violet born 1901, Margaret 1902, Geoffrey 1903, Sidney 1907 and Jack 1913 . My Godfather Ralph Prosser is the son of Margaret and I'm doing the research for him. He's be thrilled to know the Horwood history in Australia. I know Danesbury had a brother Herbert. Are you descended tgrough this line?I also know that Danesbury's sister Emily Helen married George William Birt on October 8th 1888 in Charters Towers as a notice was posted in the Gloucester papers. danesbury and his family lived in and around Gloucester on their return to England. It sounds like you are still in Australia and can fill in some links for us. I can send you some files of our researches if you would like.

Mary

Hi I dont think there is a connection or it is very distant. My Horwoods all settled in Victoria initially in Broadford a country town then later in Preston a Melbourne suburb. They were largely involved in the leather tanning industry.

However several of the Horwoods served in WW1 with Robert William Horwood being killed in France. His 3 brothers also enlisted Vincent, Leonard and Edwin (known as Dinnie)and served overseas.
I have yet to discover exactly when the family came to Australia. You did not say what country you were from

Regards Robyn
His Father was danesbury Horwood who lived in Australia for a time with his Mother Eliza.
