Elijah Hoskins b 1827 son of Ezekiel Hoskins b 1804

Looking for additional information on a possible connection between Elijah Hoskins and possibly Ezekiel Hoskins (F) and Sarah Sally Whitehead (M). This is a guess, but it fits if we could gather additional documentation. Elijah was born in KY and if one census 1870 is correct his b was 1827, 1880 has him b in 1832. He is not listed anywhere as a son of Ezekiel and Sarah, however there is a year where he might fit into the mix of children if he was born in 1827. Any assistance would be appreciated.
I found Elijah Hoskins in the 1870 Federal Census, married to Nancy A., all living in Indiana. 4 children: Leod R., Nathan A., Charles W., Mary J. The census shows Elijah born in Kentucky - line #40; you have to go to the next page of the census to see Nancy, lines 41-45

I sent an invitation for you to view my tree in ancestry.com. There are many "John Hoskins"; Bartholomew may have been a brother to Oswald Hoskyns, son of Margery Jones. I do not show Bartholomew in the children's list for Margery and John Hoskyns II. Some of my records may not be accurate, but I am basing the lineage upon the immigration to Dorchester Mass in 1630.

Yes, at least in my family's history, the name changed from Hoskins to Haskins in about 1860. Members of the Hoskins DNA project that descend from the Anthony Hoskins line spell their last name in a variety of ways. Individuals that have matched this Y DNA signature spell their names Hoskins, Hoskin, Haskin, Haskins and Hoskyns. For me,this is been a verification of the genealogical maxim that spellings are not always precise. Although, I didn't test through Ancestry my markers are loaded and viewable at their site. Does the line that you are testing represent a Hoskins lineage?

Hello,

I too have researched the Hoskins line from Windsor Connecticut. I am a descendant of Anthony Hoskins who was born approximately 1632 and died in Windsor, Connecticut in 1707. He was my seventh great grandfather. Through the use of Y DNA testing, I have connected numerous American descendents of this early English immigrant. It is said that he was the nephew of John Hoskins and they both were from the Beaminster area of Dorset.

Although in the past the Dorset location was speculation, this was finally proven by genetic testing in 2010. Through the Hoskins DNA project, living descendents in a very close proximity to Beaminster tested and were found to be from related lines.

If you're interested in any additional information from my research, please contact me.

Best regards,

Bob Haskins

I've researched "John Hoskins" who came to America in 1630 on the Mary & John ship. He arrived in Dorchester and settled there until relocating to Windsor CT. Many relatives stayed in New England while others headed west to Illinois and eventually California in the early 1900s.

He was a son of John Howard Hoskins and Margaret Ann Walden. They lived in Texas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma but had moved west from Mississippi and perhaps Georgia. I'd like to know where they came from originally. Thanks.

Jones families of Clay and Laurel County KY

Trying to research the family tree of James Jones (born abt 1819) married to Nancy Hoskins (m. abt 1845). James is listed on the 1850 census for Clay county then moves his family to Laurel County before 1860. James is always listed on the census in close proximity to Hugh Jones as well as a William Jones and Samuel Jones. Also nearby is an Edmund Jones. There is an elderly Jones named Wiley, old enough to be the father of any or all of these men. Here is the data I have:
James (b abt 1819) married to Nancy Hoskins
Hugh (b abt 1830) married to Mary
Samuel (b abt 1838) married to Mary
Edmond (b abt 1807, d bef 1870) married to Frances
Wiley (b abt 1780)

There is another Wiley in the vicinity who could be Samuel's father, and another son of the elder Wiley.

If anyone has information on these families, I would greatly appreciate some clues.

-Jim Nail
jimnail_83usna@!yahoo.com

I asked my Dad about this about 2 years ago. He remembers the incident and that it had something to do with moonshine. He did say that Perry shot the boy in the back as he was running away. I believe Perry was sent to prison so maybe prison records would help. I am sorry I cannot ask my Dad anymore questions. He is 91 and in a nursing home and is failing. I will do some more digging.

...and God bless you, Candice.....I have several databases on ancestry.com that are full of Hoskins families. None have a Joseph B in them. You are welcome to take a look. I found my Hoskins in Connecticut.
They kept wonderful records there, showing where families migrated to etc. Mine were in New york and then to Ohio and onto the West. None, hardly, if any, in Kentucky, and I'm back to 1505. But there are cousins and more, you just never know, we have got to all be related? Best to you.

I would greatly appreciate any help with this family.

My grandmother Verna Rose Frantz Kehoe was the daughter of Lela Rose Hoskins b 24 Sep 1901 Owensboro, Daviess Co, KY
She had a brother Joseph Bernard Hoskins b 5 July 1899 KY
They were the only two children born to Belinda Lucille Eberhardt. Father is thought to be Alexander Lafayette Hoskins.
Alexander and Belinda both died young leaving two minor children behind.
I believe this one might be mine as I found in the 1900 census Joseph B Hoskins is listed with a David H Hoskins and Isabella. He is listed as Grandson.
in the 1920 census he is listed as nephew living with a John S Eberhardt in Owensboro, Daviess Co, KY which would be about right since his mother died in 1914.
On his 1917-1918 WWI draft card he listed his sister Lela Rose Hoskins as nearest next of kin living in West Main City Kentucky. Can't find that on a map listed as a city in Kentucky though.
I have quite a bit of information on the Eberhardt side of this family with the help of Betty Eberhardt Hill, now I wish to explore the Hoskins side.

You can reply here or send me a message here or on my yahoo at shrtcntrygirl34@yahoo.com

God Bless,
Candice
Noah HOSKINS (1893-1939) killed by Si PERRY in Ky

Seeking any newspaper clippings or other details about the fatal shooting of Noah Hoskins (b. 16 Dec 1893 in Magoffin Co., Ky) and his 12-year-old son Oscar (b. 15 Feb 1927 in Morgan Co., Ky) on 26 Sep 1939 in Craney, Rowan Co., Ky.

Their death certificates both say that they were shot with a pistol by "Si Perry" on a public highway near Craney.

Noah Hoskins was the son of Lewis S. Hoskins (1862-1938) and Caroline Collinsworth (1861-1940). Lewis and Caroline are buried in Rowan Co., Ky, but I cannot find them in the Kentucky death records, so they may have died out of state and been returned for burial.

Noah was married on 3 Aug 1912 in Rowan Co. to Elizabeth "Lizzie" Jones (born 23 Mar 1892 in Rowan Co., Ky, died 4 Mar 1985 in Shelby, Richland Co., Ohio), daughter of David K. Jones and Eliza Ann Mynhier. She is my 1C3R on the Jones side.

Besides Oscar, they had children Hobart, Stella May, Vinson, Estil, Elmer, Halic, and Virgil who survived to adulthood, and Homer, Clacie, and Jimmie who died as infants. (Virgil b. 1933 may still be living.)

I am trying to identify the Si Perry who shot Noah and Oscar, and find out anything else about the incident.

There was a Silas Perry, born 6 Mar 1893 in Elliott Co., Ky, son of Edmund "Ned" Perry and his first wife Eliza Ann Sawyer. (Ned later married Virgie Adkins.) Silas married Saphronia "Frona" Whitt, daughter of William Allen "Billie" Whitt and Martha E. Whitt (her maiden as well as married name) on 8 March 1919 in Morgan Co., Ky. Silas and Frona had a son Edmund Perry born 8 Dec 1919 and a son Willard born 29 May 1921, both in Morgan Co. In 1930 the family was living in Sangamon, Illinois, though, and I do not know if they returned to Kentucky.

I cannot find another Silas Perry in the Morgan/Rowan area of a generation who would fit.

There was, however, also a Cyrus R. Perry, born 15 Apr 1901 in Morgan Co., Ky, son of Willis G. Perry and Lucy Sargent, and a Cyrus Perry born 18 Sep 1889 in Bath Co., Ky, son of George W. Perry and Jane Stewart, either of whom may have been known as Cy.
Claremont California Courier newspaper of Sept 30th 1914
HATH-A-WAY CLUB JOLLY-UP
Last Friday evening the Hath-a-way club gave a very pleasant jolly-up in the Parish House to a large number of young ladies in Claremont,California. Misses Gladys and Grace Hoskins played a piano and cello duet and Miss Katherine Hoskins rendered two vocal solos accompanied by her sisters. A 2 act comedy drama was given entitled "NO Man In The House" which was very entertaining.
Mrs. J.M. McConnell took the part of Mrs. Maria Bings who was determined not to have a man in the house under any consideration. Mrs. Bradly as Miss Lucy Ryder was excellent in her part. Mrs J.B.Anderson as Jessie Ray, the young lady whose beau insisted on getting into the house did her part well as did Mrs. R.D. Williams, who took the part of Aunt Belinda. Mrs. J.D. Johnson as Kate, the Irish maid, literally brought down the house at every appearance. At the close of the entertainment ice cream comes were served. The social committee in charge and to whom the success of the affair is due were Miss Marguerite Parsons, chairman; Miss Nellie Parsons, Miss Clara Neely and Mrs. J.D. Johnson.
--------------------------------------

According to the 1920 census Willis and Vinal Hoskins of Iowa and Grace now age 23,daughter, were living at 705 Indian Hill Blvd in Claremont,CA and Willis was a cotton rancher. The wife's name is a bit blurry and could possibly be Yinal C. Hoskins.
In the 1910 Willis and Vinal C. were in Imperial county Calif with son J.Fred Hoskins but no daughters were listed. In 1910 they lived on Sunset Road in Brawley,Ca. with son J.Fred as a farmer and the father listed as Own Income.
---------------------------------------
Vinal Hutchinson is the daughter of Fred and Charlotte Hutchinson, she was born in Iowa. Married Willis Hoskins.
Vinal is listed in the Calif death index: Vinal Charlotte Hutchinson Hoskins born 29 sept 1862 in Iowa with mothers maiden name of Fiske died 27 oct 1959 in LA county,Calif.

Willis Hoskins in the Calif death index: born 4 june 1857 in Iowa with mothers maiden name of Jones died 23 jan 1952 in LA county,Calif. Willis is believed to be the son of James and Betsy Hoskins of Penn,Iowa.

Katherine Hoskins Burr born 9 Aug 1890 in Iowa with mothers maiden name of Hutchinson died 9 Oct 1993 in LA county.
----------------------
In the 40s Willis and Vinal are in the Pomona city directory as living in the Monterey Apts at 458 West Monterey Ave.
Palestine married Sarah Smith, recorded 12 May 1886 in Jackson Co., KY. She is daughter of "Tom P". She also died in Middletown, OH, Butler Co. and her grave can be seen on findagrave.com. Palestine's grandson said his grandfather was always called PT and that is the way his gravestone reads. Hope this helps. I will post more on Sarah when I find it. Paula
