Everett:

Your people are hard to find with so few clues. I did happen upon a Family Tree Makers.com site. The descendants of John Hough, (b 1660 Eng, to America 1683; Generation #9 lists Clara (9) Hough (data private) who married Henry Chappy (no dates) 3 children Henry Richard; Susan; and Jeanette. Do these children seen right ? Siblings for Clara were listed: Della, Pearl, Ford, and Chester. all children of John William(8)Hough b abt 1877. If these children's names seem right I will check further.
Howard Boswell

My ancestor, Lois Hough (b. 8/19/1823 d. 7/19/1849) was the daughter of Burrage Hough and wife, Mary "Polly" Miranda Alexander. Lois lived only to age 26 and died in Ottawa, La Salle Co., IL. Her parents both died in DeKalb Co., IL.

I've been unable to find an obit or place of burial for Lois who had married Joseph Henry Wagner (Waggoner) on 9/27/1843 in Oswego, Kendall Co., IL. She was the second of four wives of Joseph . . .

Lois gave birth to two known children, Theodosia in 1845 and Henry in 1847.

Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Leslie (AZ)

Bill,
Thanks for reminding me about the census numbers....I feel dumb as I should know that. I have found duplicate names and ages for Benjamin, Jonathan & Zephaniah so I feel that there are relationships between them but we don't know how. Nephews, cousins, etc. with the same popular name which makes for a lot of confusion between different branches of the family.
I also saw the post on the DNA and I have done it on Family Tree DNA but only the maternal line. I did have a nephew do my paternal line but I don't know if that would show any Hough markers as I knew I had to have a close male to check for that. If you are interested, email me privately, I think you might already have my email which hasn't changed.
I have tried to find the final burial place for Zephaniah and Sabrah but so far have come up empty. My best guess is a cemetery called the Rufus Smith Cemetery. To my knowledge it still isn't on-line. I got a copy years ago when I visited the Herkimer Co. museum in Herkimer, NY. Do you have a copy? I think that the grave probably lost it's marker or was never marked as it is very near the Mohawk river. We tried to find it but were unsuccessful. The cemetery census was done in the 1930's as a WPA project.
Leita
Lieta,

The numbers following the name in the census are the entries in the columns on the census form. For example, for the 1800 entry for Benjamin, the first 5 numbers (30010)are for males: 3 under 10 years, 1 26-44 years and the next 5 (31010) are for females: 3 under 10, one 10-15 and one 26-44.

You live in NY, so you understand that a NY town is not the same as a village or city, it is a subdivision of a county which everybody but NY an NE calls a township. Herkimer is the name of a village (a big one), a town(ship), and a county-no wonder the rest of the world gets confused. The village of Mohawk was in Mongomery county in 1790 and Herkimer County in 1800 (Herkimer formed from Montgomery in 1791). Benjamin was also enumerated in Deerfield, Oneida County in 1800. Deerfield was formed from the Town of Schuyler in 1798. I doubt that he lived in two different places, but there were probably 2 census takers that interviewed him, one from Herkimer and one from Oneida county. He probably lived near the border, and no one knew where the border really was.

I would really like to know where the 1804 death record for Jonathan in Schuyler can be found. Max Huff has or had all of Granville's papers, I will ask him.

I tried to find records for Lenox, MA, and evidently they are on microfiche at the state library and NEHGS in Boston. Closest to me is Wisconsin. Anybody live near Boston or Lenox?

Peg, I and several other Hough/Huffs that descend from the Cheshire Houghs have had their Y-DNA tested and the results are posted on the Family Tree DNA Web Site. The Y-DNA is for a pure paternal line, so to compare you would have to be male and have the last name Hough (or Huff.) I don't know what Ancestry.com does, but if you want to compare yours with mine, email me please at wwhough@gmail.com.

I don't know if I will ever get there to do the research as I am focusing on getting my more recent biographies written so I can print out a booklet/book for the family. I did join the DAR under Zephaniah and have wondered if Jonathan was involved in the French and Indian War. I haven't found anything as yet. Benjamin and Zephaniah were two of seven children.
1810 census showed, Zephaniah Hough 02101-10011 in Schuyler.
1820 census showed, Cornelius Hoff 100001-00010 0001 in German Flats.
in Schuyler [1820] Zephaniah Huff 010201-00101 0102
in Schuyler [1820] Melton Huff 000010-30010 0001 (son of Zephaniah
Zephaniah is the Rev. soldier who applied for pension, and Melton Huff may be the son he mentioned but did not name in his pension papers.
I am in close agreement with Max, a few days off on the marriage of one of the Jonathans and Silence Bate (April 19 instead of 10, 1707)but a year off on the birth of their first daughter Temperance.
Temperence April 08, 1708
Jonathan November 28, 1709
Mahitabell December 08, 1711

My source is again the vital records of Saybrook. Note that the second Jonathan was almost 5 years younger than Silence, 22 when Silence married vs almost 27 for her, so it may have been his father who took Silence as his second wife.

I hope someone can straighten this all out someday. I have worked hard on it, but now live in Seattle. Someone in Connecticut might stumble on some records of the various Jonathans that would shed some light on who was who.

Just noticed that the specific Jonathan birth date in the posting I first replied to is November 28, 1720, which is strikingly similar to the date for the son of an older Jonathan and Silence Bate Hough in Saybrook on November 28, 1709. Looks like someone took the month and day form the Saybrook record and the year from Granville. I will, when I have time, check the Saybrook record. Should be 2 transcriptions readily available, Barbour and Plimpton. If anyone lives near Saybrook, it would be good to check the original records. I have found errors in the Barbour books before, and who knows how Plimpton got all the records she published.

Also, I have in my notes the following, citing vital records of Sharon, CT:
Jonathan, of Sharon, m Desire Rowlee of Kent, Feb 17, 1757, by John Ransom of Kent
Thankfull, dau Jonathan & Desire, b Dec 13, 1757
Zephaniah, son Jonathan & Desire, b Sept 28, 1760

I don't know of another son named Benjamin. Born later somewhere else? You mentioned Massachusetts?

Bill Hough
These family names are confusing. There was also a 2nd Zephaniah Hough in Ontario Co. the same time as the Zeph. Hough in E. Schuyler, NY.
I wonder what Max Huff used as the primary source for his book. On p. 50, there is a big paragraph on Zephaniah Hough, the Rev. War Vet.
On p. 46
"1707, Jonathan Hough md Sillent Bate on April 19, She was dau. of Samuel and Mary (Chapman) Bate, born July 27, 1680. Jonathan and Sillent had Temperance (1709), Johathan (1709), and Mehitabel (1711)"
Jonathan and Temperance must have been twins.
I wonder if one of the Jonathan's could have been a cousin, who was also named after a father or grandfather?
I really haven't sorted any of it out and don't really know how or if I should enter any of this into my "tree".
Leita

Thanks, I was really looking for a primary source. I have seen the 1720 birth year for the Jonathan that married Desire Rowley many times, but never as specific as month and day of 1720. Was hoping someone had found something.

I did a lot of work on the family of Jonathan Hough, youngest son of William and Sarah Calkins Hough, several years ago. See article in Connecticut Nutmegger, March 2007, page 510. This Jonathan and his first wife, Margaret Orvis, had a son Jonathan born March 22, 1684/85. There is a third Jonathan in the Saybrook records born November 28, 1709, who was the son of Silence Bate and probably the second Jonathan, but maybe the first. The Jonathan that didn't marry Silence Bate had a son Benjamin also in 1709. Neither the 3rd (1709) Jonathan or this Benjamin could have fathered a 4th Jonathan in 1720, which has led many (me included) to suggest that the 3rd Jonathan, born Saybrook, 1709, was the one who married Desire Rowley. If he wasn't, then I know of no other line of William and Sarah Calkins Hough that could have produced a 1720 Jonathan. The line of the first Jonathan is certainly the least documented and the least understood. Many authors assumed he died young. He did not. The 1720 Jonathan could have been a later immigrant, but that "born CT" and next generation "Benjamin" are contrary clues. DNA testing of a known Hough descendant would be helpful.

Bill Hough

"1720-1779. Jonathan Hough born in 1720 in CT. In 1757 he md Desire Rowlee of Kent. He moved to Chatham, Columbia Co., NY. Zephaniah and Benjamin were sons. (see Berkshire Co. MA.)" p. 52

This is a direct quote from Hough and Huff Families of the United States, 1620-1820: The East by Granville W. Hough. published in 1993 by Heritage Books, Inc. Originally published in 1974.

I can't find a Hough parent for Jonathan in either book. Granville Hough speculates that the Jonathan Hough of Windom, CT. may have been the son of William Hough but there isn't any definite record found so far to connect them. p. 27
Also in the book "An Early History of New Concord: c. 1760 to 1856" by Paul T. Veillette published in 1993 on p.107
is a listing of the Adult Membership of (Congregational) Church of Christ in New Concord, May. 24, 1781
Jonathan Hough and Desire Rowley are listed as members. This would have been in Columbia Co., NY after they left CT. and Mass. I believe that this was a privately published book and I can't remember where I got it. You could check with the Historical Society of Columbia Co.
Leita Reed

Could you offer a source for the 1720 birth of the Jonathan Hough who married Desire Rowley? If so, does that source name this Jonathan's parents. Does it say whether he was born in New England or was he an immigrant?
Thanks,
Bill Hough

I contacted the Scott County Indiana Genealogical Society and will be sending them scan's of the entire book, plus copying and putting in a binder at our Library so we don't have to handle the scrapbook as it is very fragile. Surnames included are Hough, Kimberlin, Hardy, Chambers and Phillips.

I grea up in Almont, MI, although I am not a Hough, I know a few. The cemetary is on Hough road. There is a historical farm on Hough rd. just west of M-53 (vandyke rd.) and there is another on 37 mile Rd. (south of almont) just west of Hipp rd. that just sold in the last 4 years. Check out historical plat maps for Lapeer County, Michigan. There are a ton of Hough families, but they are all related.

Interesting, I think you will know the Hough name is not that common. As you said mostly spelt Haugh in Clare and Limerick but now Hough appears the most common form. many get it confused as of English Origin but I would say that in Clare, Galway, Limerick & Tipperary it comes from the original Gaelic
form O'hEochach orginally a forename, Oghy which meant horseman or horse warrior. I doubt there would be a connection between your 'blow in' Hough's and those around Lower & Upper Ormond. You can actually trace the name right back to the 14/15th Century but anglicised in several forms by the Elizabethan and Cromwellian settlers.

It's all in the Genes.

Kind regards

Martin Patrick Hough
