Thanks Patricia. That's the only census that I can identify him. The one with Thomas and Harriet looked good to me too but that Thomas is still alive on the 1911 census whereas the Thomas I'm after died somewhere between 1908 and 1910. Many thanks for looking for me though. I am finding this a complete mystery as I can't even find a birth record for a Samuel Houghton in Bolton. Could it have been registered elsewhere? I'll keep looking!

1911 census RG14 Piece 23320
Samuel Houghton born Bolton abt 1880, Labourer in a Moulding Shop in a globe ironworks.
Wife Matilda born Manchester both age 31 no children
address 24 Horace Street, Off Halliwell Bolton.

Can't find exact match on earlier census but only one close is Thomas and Harriet have son Samuel born Manchester in 1880.Manchester is close to Bolton so maybe they put the nearest city they were living in at the time. Do you have any names of Samuel's siblings to match, maybe were witnesses at his marriages?
I'm searching for my grandfather, Samuel Houghton. His army service records suggests that he was born in Bolton in 1879 and signed up in Bury in 1898, aged 18. He was married twice, first in 1908 to Sarah Knight and secondly to Matilda Mcloughlin in 1910. On both wedding certificates, his fathers name is Thomas Houghton. In 1908 Thomas is alive but in 1910 he is deceased. The trouble is that I can't find Samuel on any census record and I don't know any details about his mother. If anyone can shed some light I'd appreciate it.

Thanks so much for the response. In doing further research on the origins of Houghton, Washington, I have found that it was not Willard the town was named after, but William Stevens and Sarah Jane Houghton of Boston whom the town was named after. I am now trying to tie them to Robart Houghton of Lancaster, MA d. 1723

I just discovered my husband is a descendent of Joshua, Soloman and Lois of Vermont and massachusetts and thought it interesting that he might be related to the manMwho started the town where I grew up.

Charles Houghton b. 1887 Adopted in Falmouth, Hants, Nova Scotia

Charles Houghton was my paternal grandfathers brother. He was b. 27 Feb 1887 according to the Falmouth, Nova Scotia census, but have found an alternate birth of 22 Feb 1886. His adopted parents were James Houghton b. 15 May 1844 Waterville, Kings, Nova Scotia and Louisa Jane "Jennie" Aker b. 12 Jun 1862 Falmouth, Hants, Nova Scotia. Around the turn of the century James and Louisa seperated and she remarried abt. 1904 to a Jeremiah Judson McDonald, taking her 4 youngest children with her. I have found where all the children went to when they became of age. But cannot find anything about Charles accept that he was adopted sometime between his birth and the 1891 census to James and Louisa and is also in the 1901 census in the Houghton household. The censuses indicate that he is adopted son. Beyond that, there is no info. No military records, no death record, no marriage record, nothing in the US either, nothing. I have been looking for him for 10 years and have had no luck. I am in hopes this might sound familiar to some one.
NEED INFO ON DORIS HOUGHTON FROM RHODE ISLAND

I'm looking for info on Doris Houghton (married name), who was born in Rhode Island around 1929, give or take a year or two. I'm pretty certain that she was also born in Rhode Island.

I believe Mr. Houghton went into the military, at some point, and I think that while he as away, Doris had an affair and and got pregnant, and gave the child away before her husband returned. That child became my adopted brother.

The gossip, was that Doris may have worked at Brown and Sharpe in Rhode Island, but it's possible her husband might have worked there, too, or that only he worked there.

I would like to find out if anyone knows anything about Doris' maiden name, what her husband's first name was, and what happened to Doris. She may have remarried, so I'd also like to find out what that new married name is.

It's fairly likely Doris is still alive, but I'm not sure, and would like to find out so my brother can contact her and find out her medical history, or get ahold of someone who would know that info. My brother has two children with MS, and he's blaming himself, thinking it may be in his genes, but of course doesn't know for certain. If Doris had remarried, I'd like to find out her current husband's name.

Please let me know if you have any information at all on this woman or her life, or on anyone who may have info on her. My brother is 64 years old, and has no idea who his real parents are. He needs to know, if for no other reason, than to find out his medical history.

Thanks so much. You can also contact me at: countryluva03813@yahoo.com.

Thanks again,
Debbie

within the Botley,Hampshire,England parish records
it lists a marriage license for two persons listed above
license granted 8 Dec 1774

I believe i directly descend from Edward.
I would love to go back further yet there appear to
be very few trees with edward & Jane within them

The record states Edward was from titchfield and
possibly connected to the Houghton's whom were of the trade 'butchers' a reference from his sons marriage.

So we can assume that Jane was from Botley.

Any help and facts for this houghon would be very useful

Jemima Houghton b abt 1708 Lancaster, Mass

Jemima Houghton married Samuel Carter 1725 in Lancaster. Many trees give her as the daughter of Jonas Houghton and Mary Burbeen/Berbeane. However I don't find the documentation for this in the Lancaster records - and Mary would have been 47 or so at her birth.

Jonas and Mary Burbeen did have a son Jonas, who is presumably the Jonas Houghton who m. a Mary Brigham (b. 26 Oct 1687) of Marlborough. It seems more likely that these would be Jemimas parents, but I'm unable to find anything definitive one way or the other.

Anybody have actual sources to point me to for help with this?

Thanks
Lelani

I am seeking information on my GreatUncle James W. Houghton---born to James and Mary Ann (nee' Whitlam)in Norwich, Norfolk, England.

In 1917, he joined the Winnipeg 61st CEF Battalion. His attestation papers state he was married and my elders beleive that his wife's name was Celina.

Family legend has that he was also a Canadian Mountie who helped with the capture of a notorious Chicago gangster. He then moved to LA where he served as a driver or bodyguard to film star Mary Pickford. He died circa 1935 in LA and both my Mother and her cousin remember being told she sang at the funeral. They also remember photos of an elaborate funeral.

My mother believes he had a son named Roy who was in the oil industry and a grandson who was a test pilot for Boeing.

THANKS!

Hi
We have proved that Isaac Houghton is a descendant of Ralph Houghton of Lancaster MA from DNA evidence (thanks to John Darrell Houghton). Thomas Baldwin Houghton was in 1860 census of Gridley with Isaac II. We have no evidence, but I believe that Thomas Benjamin Houghton, father of Thomas Baldwin, was son of Jesse Houghton, father of Isaac I.
Sorry no pictures.
I know that his father was also called Joseph Houghton, who was also from the Bethnal Green/Shoreditch area, and his mother was Maria Howard.

Joseph Houghton (d 1940 West Ham, Essex, England) married Adelaide Clark (b Bethnal Green, London 1861, d Ilford, Essex 1958) in Bethnal Green / South Hackney around 1881. They had six children who I have traced: Lilian (b Bethnal Green 1883), Rosetta (b Southall Middlesex 1884), Joseph Walter (b Southall Middlesex 1889), Cicely Violet (b Bethnal Green c1895), Sydney Charles (b Bethnal Green 1898) and Hilda Ena (b Mile End Old Town 1906).

I know the family and descendants of Rosetta. I am sure Lilian never married, had no descendants, and passed away in the 1970s. I know nothing about the other four children, except that Hilda lived in the Clacton, Essex area circa 1970.

HOUGHTON of Catamount Hill, Colrain, MA

Are you descended from the HOUGHTON family of Catamount Hill, Colrain, MA? If so, you are by birth a member of the Catamount Hill Association. www.catamounthillassociation.org Catamount HOUGHTONs include: Anna, Dwight, Eben, Ebenezer, Elvira, Nathaniel, Orrin, and Reuben.

The Catamount Hill Association first met in 1875 after most of the residents of Catamount Hill had moved away. Their love of the Hill brought them back for a grand reunion, which was such a success it has been repeated every five years ever since. Today, the descendants of these 70 families still meet to celebrate our mutual heritage and to learn and share stories of our beloved Catamount Hill.
Our next meeting is this August 7, 2010 at the Colrain Central School at 10am. People come from all over the country, some having attended for many years, some for the first time as they rediscover their roots. Information about the event is on our website.
We are also gearing up to celebrate the bicentennial of the May 1812 flag-raising on the Hill in 2012. It is believed that this was the first time a US flag was raised over a schoolhouse. We are planning a weekend celebration in partnership with our sister organization, Mary Lyon Foundation, which owns the property where the monument is located. You can learn more about Mary Lyon at: www.mlef.org
I have done extensive research on Catamount Hill and its 690 residents from 1763-1875. I have some more HOUGHTON information to share. I am eager to learn more about the family and would like to include more about them and the other 70 Catamount families on our website. Please feel free to correspond with me directly at the above email, or you can contact the board at catamount1875@gmail.com.
Warm regards,
Sarah Johnson, President
Catamount Hill Association
Thanks for responding! Unfortunately, I don't know. I have been unable to trace the family after they moved to PEI. I was hoping I could locate their marriage record here in Mass, but have not been successful. I am not related, but have been assisting a friend whose mother was a Robinson and a descendant of Jane and James. She had no information on her family so I have been working backwards and James and Jane are as far back as I have been able to trace. I have never seen her recorded as Janet, but when searching through records I have often found nicknames used instead of birth names.
If you come across anything that might link your Janet to my Jane, please let me know as I am currently at a dead end.
Best,
Kate

Thank you Kate,
Do you know who Jane Amellia Houghton's b/836 parents were? I am positive that my Janet Houghton b. 09 Sep 1834 Waterville, Kings Co., Nova Scotia was the d/o Jacob Houghton and Mary Ann Shannahan. 5 films on Family LDS sight and a handwritten account in a old family bible are where I got my info. They all say her name was Janet. I see you live on the cape. How are you related?

Terri Hamblin
East Wareham, MA.

I have a Jane Amelia Houghton born abt 1836 in Nova Scotia married to a James Robinson born abt 1821 in England in my tree. According to their daughter's birth record (https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com/ItemView.aspx?ImageFile=... were married in Boston 10 Oct 1855. I have not been able to locate any records in Boston matching this couple for that date/year. They are listed in the 1861 and 1871 census of Canada living in Halifax and in 1881 living in PEI. It appears he worked for the railroads. Do you think this is your Janet?
