I am trying to find out more about my great great grandfather. Willis was born in Bluffton, SC around 1844. I believe he was considered black or mulatto. He married Mary McNally in 1870 in Racine, WI, but was living in Chicago, IL. His parents are listed as Dennis & Sarah Houston on the marriage. I am a part of his family that were born in Canada. I have no information on when or where he died.

Colonel John Evans Meeting with Anthony Houston Concerning Release of Anthony's Brother from Prison

The on-line book titled, "Memoirs of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Correspondence Between William Penn and James Logan" available at this URL http://play.google.com/books/reader?id=UM4yAQAAIAAJ&prin... contains a letter dated, "29th 6th-mo., 1710" from Isaac Norris to James Logan (Philadelphia) in which Isaac Norris criticizes the behavior of Lieutenant Governor Colonel John Evans during a meeting between himself and Anthony Houston, et al in which Evan;s refused to sign the papers to release Anthony's brother William Houston from prison even though the Provincial Council had previously directed Colonel Evans to do so.

William Houston had previously provided a bond to Colonel Evans as a guarantor of the marriage of a Thomas French. The bond was to guarantee that the marriage would be performed by an Episcopalian (e.g. Church of England) minister. The marriage was apparently performed instead by a Presbyterian minister and the bond was therefore supposed to have been forfeited. William Houston however refused to pay the bond (likely for religious reasons) and Colonel Evans had him jailed. William Houston was later order to be released from prison by William Penn himself and the bond canceled.

Anthony Houston is I believe my 7th great-grandfather.

Jim Houston

Looking for information related to "Bill/Billy" Grayson Houston (Huston) who lived on a street named Sutro in L.A., CA during 1935-1940. Parents were William Houston (recall his profesion may have been a policeman) and Marjorie Grayson. Know the family still lived in the L.A. area in the late 11940's but lost track of them after that.

Had hoped to find information in the Ancestry 1940 census files but CA is still not listed by surnames - too complicated to figure out otherwise. Our family lived at 4006 6th Avenue and the Houston family lived in the house directly behind us on Sutro.

Would appreciate any assistance or ideas . . .

Leslie (AZ)

1922 Death Certificate of Lucy Alva (Flournoy) Burnham

The death certificate of Lucy Alva (Flournoy) Burnham, wife of William Edgar Burnham and daughter of Doctor Robert Joseph Flournoy and Louisa Adaline Houston can be found online at this URL http://www.sos.mo.gov/images/archives/deathcerts/1922/1922_0.... It appears to me that the informant to the death was Aubrey Ernest Burnham (born about 1879), son of William Edgar and Lucy Alva Flournoy Burnham. I believe that the informant incorrectly identified the father of Lucy Alva (Flournoy) Burnham as Francis M. Flournoy instead of Doctor Robert Joseph Flournoy. He also correctly identified the mother of Alva (Flournoy) Burnham as Adaline Houston. Adaline Houston is, I believe, the daughter of my third great-grandparents Charles Cleaver Houston and Judith Carter Yager.

Comments?

Jim Houston
Do you know how many descendants of Dr. William Houston have been sampled, and from which of his sons they descend from? I ask because I don't take DNA testing as gospel unless several people from as many sons of the individual as possible have been sampled. We have to be sure we're not testing the DNA of Mrs. Houston's boyfriend.

Also, do you know which specific royal house the Houston DNA was compared with? Bear in mind that any comparison with a descendant from a monarch after William IV will not give us relevant results, because Victoria married a member of the House of Wettin, and Elizabeth II married a member of the House of Oldenburg. And I would be sure to test the Houston DNA against not only the House of Welf-Este, but also the House of Nassau, because there is a possibility that Dr. William Houston was born during the reign of William and Mary.

The only published reference to royalty was to "blue blood in his veins" when Dr. Wm Houston was appointed Stamp Master and it was used in a Newspaper article as an insult not a declaration of paternity. Some family members through the years have turned this into a royal connection. One of those fictional family legends/fish stories.

DNA does not match royal blood line.

As for the land, you should do more research. Dr. William Houston acted as land agent for Henry McCullogh who was a land agent for the King. Henry had to bring colonists over to settle the land or forfiet - it went back to the crown. These huge amounts of land were not gifts.

The only land Dr. William Houston had at his death was the land and home left to him by Henry McCulloch and even that he had to have the legislature approve so it would not be confiscated by the new post Revolutionary government.

Our Houston line is an I haplo group which indicates Viking descent.

This DNA evidence is consistent with the Colonial rumor that Dr. William Houston was illegitimate (allegedly a son of King George II, who granted him enormous amounts of land). Illegitimacy would explain why Dr. Houston's line isn't a match with other Houstons.

Houstons of Rockbridge, VA

My grandfather was David Franklin Houston. His line was from Monroe, Union County, North Carolina, and many are buried in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery (Wesley Chapel is a villiage not a church). He traced his ancestry back to "Immigrant" John Houston, b. 1689 in Ulster, Northern Ireland. The family came over ca. 1735 included his wife, Margaret Cunningham, his children, and his mother, Margaret McClung Houston, and I believe also several other McClung and possibly Houston family members.
They arrived in New Castle, Delaware, which was part of Pennsylvania in those days. They went first to Lancaster County, PA, but soon moved down into Augusta County, VA, which later deeded the southern part as Rockbridge County.
The beautiful Rock Bridge is a local attraction and good pictures are on the internet. The area they settled was called the Borden Tract after the gentleman in charge. They named their farm "Timber Ridge" and were strong supporters of the Presbyterian Churches in the area. "Immigrant" John's second son was also John (Jr.) who died in Kentucky while on a visit there.
One of John Jr.'s sons was named William and he left VA to go down to North Carolina. A history says he "went North" but my grandfather specifically states that this is an error and that William went to "North" Carolina, settling in Union County. William was born in 1750 (per grave site) and had a son William Jr. This man had a son, John Patterson Houston, who had a son, William Henry Houston, my grandfather's father. A number of photos are available from the website for the Monroe Historical Society of the early residents and cotton farming in the area.
When investigating any Scots-Irish ancestry, which is what the background of the Houstons is, it is necessary to read up on how the Scots went to Northern Ireland and what happened there. It is often a bitter and tragic history. However, once there, the Houstons and probably others, considered themselves "Irish" as they came from that island; however the Ireland that we know today did not exist back then, and the Houstons were actually what is called Ulster Scots; that is they lived in the Ulster area (nine counties back then) but orginally came from Scotland, and are mostly of the Presbyterian religion, which is why they went there to begin with and why they came to America as well.
I hope this will clear up a lot of misinformation about this
family that has been mentioned in the past. I'd be happy to answer any question by email although most of my information is about the Houstons in Monroe, Union County, NC.

Betty Houston daughter of Robert Westfall Higgins who died 1981 NM

I just recently received the obit for Robert Westfall Higgins who died January 1981 in Albuquerque NM. The obit does NOT mention where is was buried.

I had info prior to receiving the obit I had info that he had been married 3 times:
1) Bertie Ann Worth married 1933, Divorced 1935 no children
2) Hilda Irene Rhodes married 10/14/1940 ....divorced. They had 2 children Alexander Robert and Mary Lou
3) Betty Hogue (or Hoage)...they had a daughter Robert Lou.

In the obit for Robert it lists his children. 7 daughters, which makes it hard to know who exactly belonged to which marriage...or if the girls were from a wife's previous marriage. 2 Sons.

He was survived by his wife Betty Higgins.....Hogue (or Hoage)

Children:
1) Wanda Dunlap of Albuquerque
2) Betty Houston of Edgewood
3) Pamela Bakke of Albuquerque
4) Cathy Smith of Albuquerque
5) Michelle Cordova of Edgewood
6) Roberta Higgins of Albquerque....(mother Betty Hogue)
7) Peggy Hogue of Virginia ...daughter from Betty's previous marriage????
8) James Hogue...son from Betty's previous marriage??...Hazelton, PA
9) David Hill...How does Hill fit in??? Albuquere

The info I had prior said there were 2 children from the marriage to Hilda Irene Rhodes...Alexander Robert and Mary Lou, but neither of these names were listed in the obit.

It would be so nice to know how all of the children mentioned in Robert's obit fit into his marriages.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated,
Anna

They are both burried in Center Hill Cemetary in Paragould. My grandfather ran a dairy farm in the early 1900's and they were supposedly very prominent members of the community. However, I cannot find any records. They had four children - Harry L., Berniece (Smith), Mildred (Bowen), and my mother, Florence (Weatherly). Can anyone help?

He fought a duel, killed a man, and left England as a wanted man.
He traveled around the world to Japan, China, even Turkey during the late 1800s. As he traveled he wrote about his travels in leather bound journals, of which we have one left as the rest were stolen from my grandfather's house.
We think his last name may have been Houston, but we can't be sure.
If anyone has any information on him, that would be amazing.
Margaret Houston was the sister of my great great grandfather William Houston. Both were born in Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland. I believe that William and his family and Margaret arrived in Australia on the Nehalennia in April 1853. Margaret married Christian Blom in Sydney in October 1853. I suspect that Christian went back to sea for a time, arriving back in Sydney on the Rabenhaupt in December 1854. By at least 1858, Blom was managing O. B. Ebsworth's Woolwashing Establishment at Newtown, which he continued to do until his death.

Let me know if you want more details.

What I know is that Lewis and Catherine had: Elizabeth, Sarah, Fanny, Francis and John (Johnny).
Lewis' brother John and Nancy had Lucinda, Sidney, Virginia, and a Lewis H. I have a copy of Lewis H. death notice from a paper. It states that Lewis H. was second cousin and and John was first cousin to Sam Houston.
Could Sidney be S.J.?
I've been tracing Sam Houston forward, all Uncles, but the years on the uncles just don't add up for 1st cousins. I'm still working on them.

Thank you,

I have been searching for her family for a few months and can not find anything on her until after she marries George Eaton. I found her parents on a different website.
I had John Johnny Houston as a son of John and Nancy Houston. Do you know a S J Houston? I have him as a son also but no media as to how I found them. Any help you could give me on Lucinda's family would be a tremendous help. slkinard@crcom.net

Thank you,
Sherry
