An Ella Hove appears in the 1900 US census for Winneshiek Co. IA. But she has 6 children listed as born in Iowa also.

You'll find John O. Hove with his wife Ella, a daughter, mother and brother living in Winneshiek Co. IA for the 1880 US census.

The 1870 US census shows John living in Winneshiek Co. IA in his mother's household.

This is a tough one! I am looking for any information on the parents of Sydney Abrams SHUBIN born 14 May 1890 in Latvia immigrated to America in 1900 and married Anna SHUBIN (her maiden name) who also immigrated to the US but in 1910. Supposedly, they are buried in Pennsylvania but I can find no record of this. I am especially interested in finding the ancestors of these two individuals. Anyone out there who can help, I will love you forever!

Thanks, Carmen Kerr

Is it your family in the 1920 US census in Clatsop Co. Oregon?

You never specifically listed "Magnus Bernard"s fathers name. You could get some idea of his birth year from US censuses, year of immigration to the US would also be important information.

No, it is not likely that there was ever a family crest. That would be rare in Norway and really only found among royalty or persons of semi-noble families originally from other countries.

What is the relationship that makes you mention a Nils Hove (Nils Gustav Gerhard Eriksen (Hove), Charles, etc? Please clarify.

Learn about traditional Norwegian naming patterns and practices.
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/na12.html
http://www.nndata.no/home/jborgos/names.htm
http://www.norwayheritage.com/norwegian-names.htm
http://www.nndata.no/home/jborgos/farms.htm

Good articles to understand Norwegian resources which are available -
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/articles.html

US Naturalization papers, including the first petition or application for that process, will give VITAL information about the origins of the family.
Oregon/Washington Howe/Hove Family History

Hello all!
My name is Justin Howe and I started this thread to post questions, answers and facts/allegory regarding my father's side of the family.

I am the grandson of one of the first generation of Norwegians in my family to be born in America. Therefore, as you can probably tell, my father and uncle both have some solid oral history on the matter.

My great-grandfather was Magnus Bernhard (Ben) Howe (Hove), born in either Vestfold fylke or Bergen in Norway in 1904.
There is a bit of an issue with his father's last name: Supposedly, according to his obituary from 1982, his father's last name was Eriksen, which according to my father was the last name of another Norwegian side of our family, most probably in the maternal line somewhere.

Any information on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Is there a link between the Eriksen and Hove family lines?

Regardless, our last name was Hove before our family arrived on American shores. I am sure that it was a farm name, and it referred to the gaardstadt wherewith it was associated. Another question is: does anyone know of that particular gaardsnamn (farm name) and which fylker (counties) may have Hove place names?

Does the Hove family have a crest, or coat of arms? If so, how may I obtain information on it?

I would also like to know when Nils Hove was born and what his full name was. I think it may be Nils Gustav Gerhard Eriksen (Hove), but I could be mistaken.

Whom did Nils marry? Are there any of you who know more about our 20th century family line? For example, are there any people on here related to Charles L Howe I, Magnus B Howe, Bernard Howe, etc. on here? If so, could someone provide some names and other info on our relatives?

Something to keep in mind: my father's side of the family have primarily (probably exclusively) resided in the extreme northwest of the United States since Magnus was a little boy in Astoria, Oregon. There are members of the family as far north as Bellingham, Washington (that I know of), and as far east as Prairie City, Oregon (again, that I know of).

One of these days, when I take my wife to the Scandinavian Fest in Astoria, Oregon, I'll find out more about my family but until then, the WWW is the best research option. 87)

Thanks for checking this out!
Til next time.

Amanda -

I'm just starting to look at my ESPESET(H) relatives from Vik, Sogn Og Fjordane. I suspect from family story, photos, etc that the ESPESET and HOVE are "cousins". I haven't pulled it togther yet. I'm just starting to read the Vik Lokalhistriske Arkiv. I'm sure you are literaly years ahead of me.

I have a Anders Bendicson Undi ESPESET b. 1813, d. 1850, and his son Olaf Anderson ESPESET b Feb 8 1849, VIk, d.

I am searching for connections to the Thomas (Hov) Howe family. His wife was Petra Berger. Both came to the state of Washington from Norway in the late 1800's and both died in the Cheney. Wa. area in the 1900's. He was from the Idd area, south of Oslo, and I have visited the Idd church as well as Hov relatives in the area. I have data on all children of Thomas and Petra and am searching to determine if any other relatives came to the US, as well as other relatives in Norway. Information on the Bergers would also be helpful. Petra's brother also came to WA state and died in the Cheney area. I do not have information or contacts for the Bergers in Norway. I am a grandson of Thomas and Petra.

Amanda Ferley,
I got your message board and originally searched my wife's Hovie ancestry. We found none of your names. We have a complete search back to 1795.
However, just today I received the obit for my great grandmother Ellen Larsdatter Fedge Flesche. It reported that Mrs. John Hove (Randi Larsdatter Fedge) attended the funeral at Ellendale, MN on 9-25-1914.
I will e-mail you with my Fedge family information.
Ken Swanson

I am researching to see if Olaf Hove may be a relative of mine, and hoping someone can help. "My" Olaf Hove was a law student at the University of North Dakota (Grand Forks) in 1937 and 1938. He may have also earned his undergraduate degree there. If he is the correct person, he dropped out of school in 1938 or so. He had at least one brother. He was of Norwegian descent, and his father was a farmer. In his law school directory his hometown was listed as Leeds, ND, but that may mean he just lived there for some period prior to going to school.

Does any of this strike a chord with anyone?

We don't know anything about Olaf, where he was born, when, etc, only that his name was Olaf. Thomas had family around the Seattle area, I don't know where exactly, but my Grandpa Hove had relatives around there. Olaf lived in Minnesota. That was where my Grandpa was raised.
While the persons you speak of would have left Norway before the 1865 census - there are two farms called "Findreng" listed in "Hvideseid" (you'll find that spelled Kviteseid in the LDS library catalog) Telemark Norway in that census. Parish records for that area are available on LDS microfilm back until about 1755 and quite a number of other resources are also available through their resources.
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/articles.html

Mattie Hulverson

Mary Jackson: your ancestor Mattie Hove seems to have been born in 1865. In 1880, she would've been about 15. You say she was born in Norway. One Mattie Hulverson, age 15, is shown in the 1880 U.S. Census as one of several children of John and Christena Hulverson in Boardman Township, Clayton County, Iowa. Mattie's older sister was Hellena, age 18. Hellena and Mattie were born in Norway. The next child, Christian Hulverson, age 13, was born in Iowa. Parents, Hellena and Mattie must've emigrated about 1865/6. You can access part of the 1880 U.S. Census at the website of the University in Bergen. The part shown reveals people said to have been born in Norway. Go to http://www.hist.uib.no. There you'll also find the 1801, 1865 and 1900 Norwegian censuses. It sometimes took people a while to settle on an American surname. I wouldn't discount the possibility that the Hulversons were your ancestors until you have obtained more information. Strictly speaking, this candidate would've been Mattie Johnsdatter; and her father, John Halvorsen. Hove (or some similar spelling) may've been the name of a farm at which they last lived in Norway. Try to obtain the 1886 marriage record for your ancestor Mattie. It may've happened at a church in Clayton County in eastern Iowa. Such a record should reveal her parents. If they're shown as John and Christena Halvorsen and/or Hove, you're in luck. Good luck.

I know that Mattie as born in Norway but when and where? My Great grandfather remarried Bertha Olsen. I am really at a dead end for Hoves in Iowa I do know that grandpa had a cousin named Winnie or Minnie Hove in Eagel Grove. I am hoping somewhere there might be a tie?

Hove family

I am looking for my husbands ancestors from Norway. The information I have begins when Sjur Olson Honsi and his wife Brita Jonsdatter Hove came to the US with their 3 children Ole, John, and Anna in 1854.
Brita's parents were Jon Larson Hove and Lussi Olsdotter Orvedal. Their other children were Lars, Ola, Ivar, and Durdee. John S Hove married Randi Lardatter Fedge March 23 1868. Their children were Elizabeth, Lewis, Sever(t), Ingar, Bets(e)y, Oscar, Joseph, Robert, Lizzie, Emma, and Cora. Elizabeth Hove married John Ferley. They are my husbands ggrandparents.

Sjur Olson Hove's parents were Ola Sjurson Honsi and Anna Jonsdotter. They had 8 children. Most of this info comes from the bygdebok from Vik i Sogn Norway and the book "West Norway and its Fjords".

If anyone can elaborate on this info, or can give me more info on descendants, please email me at

aferley@aol.com

Hove marriage record

Hello, I am actively researching my family's
history, the Hove/Howe family, on the Internet.

I recently found out my great-grandfather
Magnus Howe was both born and wed in Norway,
wed to Margaret Nuusbaum.

I'd like to accomplish 2 things with this post:

1. Find out where I can obtain marriage records
for Bergen, Hordaland, Norway; for the years
1920-1930, and;

2. Inquire about the name Nuusbaum. How many
alternate spellings are there of Nuusbaum?
What is its origin?

Mainly I just want a marriage record for
1920-1930 in Bergen, Norway.

Thanks!
All replies can be posted on the board,
and / or emailed to my email address at:

jh1997@gorge.net

Adjø! (Bye!)
8^{>
