Rhys,
I have this early Peter in Dumfriesshire:
The Historical Families of Dunfriesshire and the Border Wars
http://www.electricscotland.com/history/dumfries/index.htm

CHAPTER IX

The Kirk land of Kirkpatrick-Fleming which had belonged to Robert Johnstone of Newbie was conferred on William Maxwell of Kirkhouse by a royal charter dated Whitehall, Jan. 10, 1607; and Brigholme and Northfield, the property of the same Laird, were sold by his son Robert, in 1610, to Mr Patrick Howat, one of the King’s chaplains, afterwards a Scotch Bishop.

GASS from Annan, Scotland

Re: GASS from Annan, Scotland
charliehelene (View posts) Posted: 9 Mar 2010 10:29PM GMT
Classification: Query
Surnames: Gass

Thanks Christopher..I now don't believe we connect to the Gass family..I did collect a few various records on the Gass family..Maybe something might click with you? Good Luck with your tree Bye Sylvia.

142 BATTLE OF LOCHMABEN. [1484.
Assisted Albany in his rebellion, and took part in the storm- ing of Berwick in 1482. Two years later he again crossed the Border in July, in company with the Duke of Albany, at the head of 500 English horse, expecting that his ancient vassals would once more rally to his summons. But in this he was grievously mistaken. The party rode into Lochmaben on July 24, 1484. There was assembled a great number of country-people at the annual fair, many of whom had formerly owed feudal allegiance to Albany and Douglas. But for the most part they now turned a deaf ear to the command to ride with them. A fierce conflict began at noon and lasted till night, when the Scots being reinforced by king's troops under Charteris of Amisfield and Crichton of Sanquhar, the English force drew off to the south. John, Master of Maxwell and Steward of Armandale, 6 fell in with them on the banks of Kirtle, and inflicted heavy loss on them. But Maxwell, being sorely wounded, was leaning on his sword at the close of the engagement when a Scotsman named Gask stabbed him from behind, in revenge for the death of a cousin (This was Mathew Gass-Gask)whom Maxwell, in administering justice, had caused to be hanged. Maxwell died on the spot, and a column surmounted by a cross fleury
still stands on the farm of Woodhouse, in the parish of Kirkpatrick-Fleming, to commemorate his fall The Duke of Albany made good his escape, but Douglas was struck from his horse. No one seemed to recognise the old earl, but he, seeing a former retainer, Alexander Kirk- patrick, made himself known to him and surrendered himself his prisoner. Kirkpatrick was deeply moved at the sight of his old master, and offered to ride with him into England; but Douglas's spirit was broken at last, and he would make no effort to escape. He was taken before the king in Edin- burgh. His life was spared, and he was ordered to live in 8 Eldest son of Robert, second Lord Maxwell.

The Origin of Surname Gass

In the 13th century the massive land holdings of the powerful Murray clan of Tullibardine included Trinity of Gask, located near Edinburgh in the Parish of Perathshire. Our ancestors trace to this period. They represented the ancient Murray family, and more than likely were men-at-arms from Gask and rated as " bonnet lairds'--meaning they held land by the feudal method of bearing arms for their superiors. In the 14th century some of Murrays of Gask moved south to Dumfriesshire. There our Perthshire forebears "of Gask" also settled and became cross connected at least by legal implication, to three powerful Border clans--the Murrays, Carruthers, and Irvings. In 1438 the name Andrew of Gask appears as Rector of Rampatrick, embracing the present Parishes of Dornock, Gretna, and Kirkpatrick Fleming. His signature exisits as witness to a transcript of a Murray Cockpool Chater. The Merkland Cross stands today in memory of the eldest son of Lord Maxwell who was sworded by Matthew Gask in 1484 in revenge for the hanging of a cousin. William and David Gask witnessed a land grant on July 3, 1532 involving the Currathers and later, Gask the Elder, sighned a document dated June 23, 1541. Scores of legal Gask signatures survive these early times and all have documented. Sometime before teh 16th century, the Dumfriesshire Gask agreed to " lowlandize" the name to GASS. John Gass and others in Tordock are recoreded in the Commissariat of Dumfries in 1626. The Dornock Parish tombstones reveal the early spelling as "GAFS' --- the old method of showing the double S. Today the evidence is conclusive. The name was originally GASK and only the decendants of William GASS ( 1667-1749) and thoes who claim descent from a Dumfriesshire source are related and are descended from our common forebear, ANDREW OF GASK, who lived in the 1420 period. It has been said that the world isdivided into two nationalities-----Scotsmen and those who wish they were Scotsmen. The claim is not easily proved for it was not until 1855 that the Scots were compelled to record births and deathes. Very frw Scots today, particularly along the Border, can trace their forebears beyond the mid 1800's. It is both unusal and historically satisfying that we are able to authenticate the history of our family of Americian GASSES directly back for ten generations and the name even futher. It must be remembered that the English-Scottish frontier is and was the dividing line between two of the most energetic, agressive, talented.and altogether formidable nations in human history. Between the two countries there existed centuries of terrible and prolonged violence. By the 16th century, robbery and bloodshed was a systematic way of life. The Border people literally lived on a battlefield. Feuds with the English, as well as between families and clans, were long and deadly. But the constant strife bred a hard and self-reliant people. For centuries GASS families farmed and fought in this beautiful Dumfriesshire Border country along the Solway shores. The name appears in most every burial ground in the Dumfriesshire area, as well as on Scotland's oldest map. Distant relatives are promient in the area today. The rugged Border country was indeed the land of our forebears, and the ancestral roots go deep in the ancient Scottish soil.
*The above was provided, with the greatest of appreciation by Vickie Gass.

John Gass Will & Misc. Family Notes

I am sick in body but sound in memory and judgment blessed be almighty God for it I make this my, last will and testament revoking all other wills and testaments made by me. I bequeath my sole to the great God who gave it to me and my body to be decently buried in the church yard of Donegal as my exs. some site allow. I leave my dear wife two child's parts of the whole after my just and lawful debts is paid: also if she marries in eight to ten years she is to leave the plantation to my sons: also my children are not to receive their part for four years after due. Also I leave my dear wife and Benjamin Gass executors and William Brayns and Sam Smith or Peter Rod tutors to my whole family. Signed Sealed and Delivered in the Presence of Use: and dated this 28 day of June 1734. The Jon. Gass Will.

"Misc. Notes"

Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania Will Book A, Volume 1, page 19
Benjamin Gass was named exc. in 1734. In his will the elder John Gass directed that his remains "be desently buried in the church yard of Donigall" and that "ye plantation (be left) to my sons." *Donegal Church is located in the present day town of Hershey, Daulphin Co., Pa. At the time of John's death this area was located in Lancaster Co., Pa. No "Gass" is shown as having been a member of Donegal Church. Those I did find with similar spelling are: Joseph and Mary Guess ... Joseph Guest ... The following all have surname Gest: Ann, Benj., Daniel, Deborah, Deborough, Elizabeth, Hannah, Henry, John, Joseph, Margaret, Mary, and Ruth.

It's believed and undoubtedly so, that William Magill was quite possibly the third husband of Margaret Gass. Margaret removed to Virginia sometime after Johns death ... wherein, she and William were married. Thusly, the children listed for William Magill would be his children and not hers. It's further speculated, because of the unusual request in John Gass' Will, that Margaret may not have been the mother of all of his children and that he feared for her well being after his death. Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Viginia extracted from the original court records of Augusta Co., 1745-1800. "Abstracts of Wills of Augusta County, Virginia, Augusta County Court ... John Murray of Aiket showed a grant of the lands of Northfield and Gullielands under the great seal in 1604, and Ewart produced an old charter of these lands made out to a John Ewart and his wife Janet Johnstone in 1549. Thereupon Howat disposed of Galabank to Galloway (who appears to have been nephew or grandson to Christopher Irving and Margaret Johnstone) because, as he states, he had "called to mind that it is most godly and equitable that the present lands should be sold and disposed by me to the old kyndlie and native tenants and possessors of the said lands; and understanding that John Galloway, bailie burgess of Annan, and his predecessors since many ages past have been old kyndlies and native tenants and possessors of the said lands of Galabank," he herewith restores them to Galloway for an equivalent. Galloway’s brother Patrick was another of the Royal chaplains, and the father of the first Lord Dunkeld. His wife was Helen Gask of Ruthwell, and their daughter, Helen Galloway, was married to William Rig, the son of Cuthbert Rig, whose signature is appended to some Maxwell, Carruthers, and Burgh of Dumfries deeds at an earlier date, and one of whose daughters or granddaughters married a Maxwell of Kirkconnell. William Rig and Helen Galloway had two daughters, the eldest married to John Irving, "called the Laird," and the younger, Gaylies or Egidia, was married first to Robert Loch, and afterwards, in 1622, to Johnstone, "called of Mylnfield," who bought Galabank or Gallowbank from his wife’s grandfather in 1624.
The Historical Families of Dunfriesshire and the Border Wars
CHAPTER VIII
In Monypeny’s Chronicle, published in 1587, sixty-five lairds and gentlemen are enumerated as residing in Dumfriesshire, and the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright. Nine were Johnstones, viz., the Lairds of Johnstone, of Newbie, of Graitney, of Wamphray, [Wamphray is described in an act and decreet, 1611, as a "gentleman of very mean rent—nothing like a great baron," and his brothers "but young gentlemen without any rent or means of living."] of Corrie, of Corhead, of Craighopburne, of Newtone, and of Kirkton.
Hi Mary Ann, just picked up your Howat link. I'm also descended from James Howat and Margaret Hamilton, through Richard (b 1827) who married Jane Fletcher Campbell (my GGG grandparents). Would love to know if you have traced any links beyond James/Margaret.
I too am in Australia, in Perth. It seems George's sister Margaret also emigrated to Australia with husband William Telford.

Presently in Dumfries – signed Richd Howat P. L. McMillan witness Jas Hannay witness
I the before designed Richard Howat of Mabie Considering that in the before written Deed I have named James Murray McCulloch of Ardwall, David McCulloch of Torhousehie and Francis Hunter of Barjarg Esquire assignees & Executors but I cannot expect they would take the trouble so readily as persons with whom I am more intimately acquainted and whose residence near Dumfries will render it less inconvenient for them to meet therefore I hereby recall the nomination of the said three gentlemen and in their place and stead I hereby Nominate and appoint Robert Ross of Cargenholm, James Connell of Conheath and Robert Taylor of Broomlands Esquires to be Executors and assignees in Conjunction with the assignees and Executors nominated in the said deed and Codicil thereto above written exclusive of the said James Murray McCulloch, David McCulloch and Francis Hunter with all the power’s conferred upon the assignees and Executors named in the said Deed and Codicil thereto And I hereby nominate and appoint the assignees and Executors named in said Deed and Codicil and in these presents under the exception above written to be Tutors and Curators to the heir succeeding to said estate if at the time under the years of majority any three of whom a quorum and survivors or survivor of them with power to set tacks so as to expire at the first term of Whitsunday after the heir attains the age of twenty one years complete or at farthest within two years thereafter or for such shorter period as from time to time they shall judge expedient to remove tenants and appoint Agents or Factors hereby declaring that they shall not be liable for the solvency of tenants or factors and agents as I am persuaded they will act with caution and prudence as in their own affairs and they shall not be liable singuli in solidum but only each for his own actual intromissions And whereas it is mentioned in the said Deed that my Spouse Helen Howat is to continue to possess and enjoy the Mansion house Etc. for five years after my decease and pay the heir succeeding to the Estate a yearly rent of one hundred pounds sterling which might be considered as imperative upon her so to possess them whereas it is my intention that she shall have right to relinquish the possession at any term of Whitsunday on giving six months previous notice to the heir or to the said Executors or to the factor or Agent acting under them and from the term she so ceases to possess she shall of course cease to be liable in payment of said rent Farther I hereby revoke the foresaid Deed so far as one thousand pounds sterling are destine to Richard Kirkpatrick and so far as Five hundred pounds sterline are destined to Elizabeth Kirkpatrick and instead of the sum bequeathed by said Deed to the said Richard Kirkpatrick I bequeath to him an annuity of Forty pounds sterling payable at two terms in the years Whitsunday and Martinmas by equal portions beginning the first payment of Twenty pounds sterling at the first termof Whitsunday or Martinmas that shall happen next after my decease and so furth yearly and termly during all the years of his natural life and instead of the sum bequeathed to Elizabeth Kirkpatrick I bequeath an annuity of twenty five pounds sterling payable to her during all the days of her natural life at two terms Whitsunday and Martinmas by equal portions beginning the first payment of Twelve pounds ten shillings sterling at the first term of Whitsunday or Martinmas that shall happen next after my decease and so furth thereafter and as I mean these two last mentioned annuities solely as alimentary I declare they shall neither be assignable by the annuitants nor attachable by the present or any future Husband to receive and discharge said annuity from time to time as if she had not been married Moreover I leave and bequeath to Mary Clark eldest daughter of the late Samuel Howat residing in Maxwelltown, the eldest daughter of the said Richard Kirkpatrick and the Eldest daughter of the said Elizabeth Kirkpatrick and I desire my Executors to make payment to each of them of the sum of twenty five pounds sterling in terms of the said Deed instead of the four not named relations the bequest to whom I hereby revoke And in respect the said William Gordon has much to my satisfaction done all my business ever since I returned from India I would wish him to be employed by my said assignees and Executors so far as a person in his line of business is required in executing the objects of the said Deed if they see no good reason for not employing him therein And lastly it is my desire that my said assignees and Executors shall employ all the residue of my personal Estate and Effects after satisfying all the foresaid Provisions Legacies and annuities in the purchase of Lands in the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright or Shire of Dumfries so soon as they can meet with a purchase of an estate they think eligible or if previous to the free residue being ascertained they shall think proper to purchase such Lands to the extent of the ready funds at the time they are hereby empowered to do so but keeping this in view that it is my opinion it will be more advisable to purchase an Estate without a Mansion house upon it than with one because I think it is a disadvantage to have two Mansion houses and I would wish the heir to said Estate to reside at Mabie And in the event of all the free residue of my personal funds and effects being applied in such purchase then and in that case the heir of Tailzie shall be bound to make payment of the several provisions legacies and annuities before specified and shall be taken bound to do so in the dispositions and other Titles to the Lands that may be purchased as aforesaid it being my intention that so far as my personal estate falls short of satisfying my just and lawful debts the said
My apologies for taking so long to respond. Your information is is extremely interesting. I would very much like to see copies of the photographs and the newspaper articles. As far as I am aware Hugh Galt Howat was lost at sea - I don't have a date.

Have only recently after many years started exploring again the Howat family. I can't believe I missed your message Angela as I think you have my link. You mentioned Richard Howat and Jane Campbell. Thanks for birth date of Jean Fletcher Howat. She married my gr grandfather Dugald Lawrie and their dtr was named "Jane Campbell Lawrie" so that must have been her grandmother's name. Love to hear from you again. Or anyone else who has info on these names. Also from Australia, how can I access Scottish BDM records?
Glenda Judge

Hi Wendi

I found a print out from this message in my Howat file I had dating back to 2001. I didn't know very much at that time about Howatsons/Howat

My own Howat's are from St Quivox and Newton and were coal miners. James Howat m Euphemia Galbraith son James married Elizabeth Rennie. Over the years I have collected lots of info on Ayrshire Howat's some are in gedcom files others on bits of paper. Anyway I have been helping a friend with his Howatson family who originated from New Cumnock, and have been checking the Opr's for Auchinleck, Old Cumnock, Ochiltree and New Cumnock for Howat's/ Howatson's. I know there was a Howat family in Auchinleck with the name Charles. I believe they probably originated from Old C. I also found a family in New C. William Howat and Ann Douglas. I have traced this family to Sorn, Riccarton and to Galston. Many of the Howat families had particular trades such as farmers, shoemakers and miners. With reference to Charles Howatson and Margaret Reid who married in Auchinleck this family became Ayrshire landowners and my friend is writing an article for the East Ayrshire FHS on them. Margaret Reid is from the Reids of Dundonald. Who lived in Ducanzemer/Auchinleck laterly.
Incidently, I am also descended from Reids. John Alexander and Christian Reid who's daughter Susannah was born in Auchinleck before I believe they went to Kilwinning. I think the Reids may be from there?

I have also tracked Matthew Reid/ Richard Reid from Auchinleck to Irvine where many of my mother's ancestors were from.

I would love to hear from you

Regards Angela Cawdron

I believe that I am connected to the HOWATs.

My ROBERTSON and MACKIE lines originate from Fenwick, Kirkmaiden, Stewarton, Bute and surrounding areas.

My paternal grandfather's sister was Eva Mary HOWAT ROBERTSON 1906-2007 Dunedin, NZ. Parents: David ROBERTSON 1873 Stewarton-1939 Dunedin = Annetta ROBERTS 1872-1966 Dunedin.

My gt grandparents were careful to include family surnames as middle names for most of their children, but I have yet to find a HOWAT marriage in the ROBERTSON line.

My gt gt grandparents were John TONKIN ROBERTS 1833 Cornwall-1912 Dunedin = Elizabeth GALLOWAY Cal 1843 Calderwood, Scotland-1925 Dunedin. So there is a chance that HOWAT could be in her lineage, but I have nothing else on Elizabeth.

I have lots of information on the ROBERTSONs and MACKIEs, if anyone sees a connection through them - the ancestors in these lines were keen to pass on family surnames.

Lynn Robertson

Hi

I am Hugh's great grandaughter. My parents were John and Mary Wilson(nee Howat).

I may have some of the items you are referring to but certainly only have one picture of Mary Mackie Miller. I'd be really grateful to have what you hold if it would be possible to send them to me. I don't use Ancestry much any more as I've been using Find My Past recently, but my e-mail address is somerton@tiscali.co.uk. If you would like I can send you what I've got. Also, if you would like I can send you a copy of my up to date tree if you can accept a Gedcom file. If you know anything about the Howat's I'd love to share it.I'm trying to place your family-was your wife formerly Mary Adams?
My cousin, Tommy Howat, got the pictures of Hugh Galt and the newspaper article I have for me. Strangely, my brother is a master mariner so has obviously inherited the family sailing bug. He currently owns a yacht chandlery business.

Hoping to hear from you.

Best regards.

Eileen Somerton

We have photos of High Galt Howat taken 1887 when a crew member on the Thistle, Scotland's America's Cup yacht, and a couple of Mary Mackie Howat Mary according to birth records was born illegitately to Catherine Miller in 1857. We are told that if Catherine got married the birth would have been "natural" so the father was not around for whatever reasons unknown. I have too some newsprint from US papers mentioning Hugh Howat and the America's Cup yacht racing that year. Of any help to you? Stuart Smerdon married to Mary Hugh's grand daughter

What is the earliest records for the HOWAT name? (or similar)

I'm researching Hewet/Hawet/Huwet etc in England in the 1300s and 1400s. I'm interested in seeing if there's any connections to Scotland.

For instance, there were Hewets/etc in York who were persecuted Catholic "recusants" from Henry VIII onwards. It would be completely plausible for them to head northwards then. This family were frequently cloth merchants, so might have had a reason to set up a branch office in Scotland in any case.

The earliest scots references I have are for Nicholai Herwart (1390) and Willelmo Herwart (1435), Vicar of Farnell. This would be Nicholas and William in English or lowland Scots. Could be the same family.

Does anyone else have any records pre 1600?

Rhys Howitt
Goulburn NSW Australia

Hello Margaret:

Thanks for getting back to me. Sorry to be late replying but I have been away for a week. Yes, I wd like the info you have about the Fenwick weavers' society. I know some of my ancestors from Fenwick were involved in weaving and the sewing of muslin esp after they moved to Kilmarnock, but I know so little about their trade.

I still don't know if the Margaret Gemmill b 1778 Fenwick is connected to me. My GG Grandfather James Gemmill was b 1786 Riccarton but his parents were John Gemmel and Jean Richmond m Dec 1785 in Fenwick. I can't seem to connect them to anybody although there were many Gemmell/Gemmill families there. I don't know the John Gemmell and Margaret Frazer connection.

I did though enjoy reading about your Jasper Howat and Margaret Gemmill family. I'm sure at some point there must be a connection as it had to be a relatively small world!

Hugh

Hi Jim,

I've just posted a list of all Howat burials in Fenwick parish from 1706-1849. In 1722 and 1724, sons of Matthew Howat were buried. Both were named Robert. A third son Robert survived. I'm pretty sure Matthew was naming his sons after his father. I have found mention of a Robert Howat who was a church officer in the late 1690s and another reference to a Johne Howat in the 1640s. Possibly father and grandfather of Matthew?

Fenwick parish records are not in good shape. It does not surprise me that there is no record of Matthew Howat marrying Jean Finlay but the burial record of son Robert in 1722 and the grave stone confirm they were husband and wife.

Bye for now.

Margaret

Hi Margaret -

I like many others have come to a roadblock on Matthew Howat's parantage - I have a copy of the parish record showing the birth and death dates you indicated. I have been unable to locate a parish record showing Matthew's birth.

One thing confusing is that I have been unable to find a parish marriage record for Matthew to Jean Finlay. I have found one between Matthew Howat and agnes Calderwood on Dec 14, 1721 in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. Do you have any evidence that Robert and Jean Finlay married and had Robert as a Son?

BTW - My line goes like this

Robert Howat
Jasper Howat
Andrew Gemmel Howat
Jasper Howat
John Longmuir Howat
Helen Bennie Howat
Helen Bennie Savage

I am also a descendant of Matthew Howat and Jean Finlay via his son Robert, grandson Jasper, and great granddaughter Christina. (Matthew would have been my ggggg grandfather.)

I'd like to compare notes and fill in some more of the Howat branch of my family tree.

Do you have any information about Matthew Howat's origins? I suspect his father was a Robert Howat and his grandfather may have been a John Howat, both of whom were connected to the local church as was Matthew.

Best wishes,

Margaret

I am a descendant of Jasper Howat and Margaret Gemmell.

Jasper was a son of Robert Howat (01 May 1737- 13 Dec 1797) and Elizabeth Wylie (died 21 Jan 1773). Jasper was born in Fenwick on 21 Apr 1771. His paternal grandparents were Matthew Howat (1693-1784) and Jean Finlay (died 1761).

Margaret Gemmell may have been the daughter of John Gemmell and Margaret Frazer. If this is the case, Margaret was baptized on 02 Nov 1778 at Fenwick.

Jasper and Margaret married at Fenwick on 24 Jun 1797. They seem to have had a large family, including twin daughters, but the Fenwick birth/baptismal records are not available for searching and what I have is pieced together from death records and notes from other researchers:
Janet - died 09 Feb 1806 (a child)
Jasper - died 05 Oct 1828 (an adult)
Jean - died 09 July 1829
Janet - married James Howat
Christina - born abt 1818 - died 1853
David Gemmill - born 14 Apr 1822
There was probably a son Robert but I have found no record as yet.

Jasper Howat was a weaver and belonged to the Fenwick weavers' society. I have some notes on this if you are interested.

Margaret Gemmill died 09 Jan 1831. Jasper remarried on 08 Aug 1834 to Elizabeth Young. Jasper died 13 Apr 1849 at Fenwick and Elizabeth died 27 Nov 1862.

I have a list of all the Howats who died in Fenwick between 1706 and 1849 if that would help your research.

Note: all dates come from Internet databases or other researchers - I have not seen the parish records myself.

Margaret

Does anybody have information on this couple. Their son David 1804-1874 married Mary Walker 1805-1875. I thought the parents were Jasper Howat 1764-1849 and Margaret Gemmill but I am having doubts re this now. David and Mary went to Glasgow and I have sourced information on them but Robert and Elizabeth's parents are my stumbling block.

Hi
I do not know how Howatt changed from McDonald, just that Howatt uses the McDonald Clan Colours but I have done a lot of research on Howat/Howatt or Howitt and William is one of the family names. My husbands Maternal Grandfather and further back were Howitt. These were all from the Glasgow area. Perhaps some of my research would be of a help to you.

Peggy

There is a very good book "Collins Guide To Scots Kith & Kin" (A guide to the clans & surnames of Scotland).
The explanation of the Howat name under this Macdonald clan is that some of the smaller clans or families fell under the Macdonald Clan protection. Some of these clans took the Macdonald surname and some kept their own names. It seems that the Howat name was original and kept by that family.
Judy Brooks Truchon--my husband's grandmother was a Howat.

Hi Cindy. I do not think we are of the same branch but here is what I have.
1816 John Howat & Margaret Rodgers had a son Peter, parish of Glasgow. Peter married a Janet Bryson ( Janet was born in 1815)They had two sons that I know of, William who married Catherine Morrision and Peter who married Margaret Connor( Margaret was Irish) William & Peter were Engineers( Journey Men) which means self-employed. They travelled back and forth between Glasgow and Ireland. William, Catherine & Margaret are buried in Dublin 1902 to 1906 time frame. Peter in Liverpool 1937.William's sons were Coopers. Alex was born in Dublin and he inturn had a son called Alex who fought in the 1st World War.Both Alex's and families went to Liverpool some time after 1901. Peter went after his wife died in 1906. Peter's son Peter married an Ellen Brogan in 1906 and that is my husband's Grandfather & Grandmother. Peggy

Hi Peggy,
Thanks for your email. My records show that they spelled their last name "Howat" until Andrew and Samuel came to the US and then it was spelled "Howitt". My husband's aunt was in Glasgow in the 1980's and met Alexander, who was in his 90's by then. He was a retired Bank Clerk and living alone in a little apartment. She said he was very proper and met them at the door with a suit and tie on. They had tea with him that afternoon. He died a few years later. HE had been married and had a step-son from his wife's previous marriage. He had no children of his own. I think he visited America once in his lifetime. You have been at this a lot longer than me. Do you think our Howitts are the same or did they branch off a few generations before? If you have looked at my family tree on this site, you'll find I've gathered quite a lot of info, mostly from family members. I would love any information you can share! Thanks, Cindy

I'm interested in getting more information on any of them -
Their names and birth/christening dates:
Lillias born abt 1837
James 5 Feb 1839
Jean 11 Apr 1840
Hugh 1841
Euphemia 1843
Agnes 1845
William 1848
Mary 1850
Grace 30 Apr 1853
Janet (my 3Grandmother)10 Dec 1855
Hugh 4 Sep 1858
