Clyde Howden and his wife Mildred in Dinuba California

I am looking for the maiden name of the wife of Clyde Howden. I also would like the marriage date and place. Clyde Howden was the son of Dawson Howden and his wife Amanda Bice. I have a picture of Clyde and his wife in a group picture that includes Clyde's sister and brother and their spouses. Clyde's wife is identified as Mildred. Per the social security death index and the California Death index, both on Ancestry.com., Mildred was born in Texas on 2 Sept 1897 and she died 6 Jan 1979. She and Clyde are buried in the Smith Mountain Cemetery in Dinuba California. Clyde was born in Iowa but was raised in Dinuba. As he and his wife were buried there it is safe to assume they lived in the environs. Clyde was some sort of minister and spoke at various church groups throughout northern California. He was not yet married when the 1930 census enumerated him in Fresno as a 37 year old single man.

Clyde is my 1st cousin 3th removed

Thank You

Leslie

Hello, Judy - thanks for your reply. Since my original posting, I have found out more information, and have been in touch with Edwin and with George's daughter Pam (in Canada). I've been able to confirm that your Eric is indeed the nephew of my great-grandmother. I have one photo of Eric as a child. Where do you fit into the family tree? Perhaps you'd like to email me directly at mattperi@btinternet.com.
Matthew.

Hello Matthew

I'm not sure that I can personally help you with regards to more information about Eris Noel Thomas however I do believe my Uncle may be able to get you in touch with his cousin George in Jhansi.

My Uncle Edwin and my mother Daphne are the children of Coral Alice who sadly died in 2007.

I know that my mother's cousin Alison died a few years ago. I believe that George is still alive but I do not know anything about Audrey and Elaine.

A few years ago my uncle carried out some research on his side of the family which also included the Thomas line.

I believe that Doris was referred to as Aunty Dolly by mother.

Do you have any photos of Eric and Doris?

If you want to take this further please let me know by reply.

As I searched for that family, and looked at the links I come up with this:

Anthon came from the farm Hovden in Tune, Østfold.
He had at least four siblings: Andreas, Kristian, Mathea and Julius: http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&am...

His father was Erik Johnsen Hofden?(Hovden) and Siri Børresdtr. Eriks father was John, and Siris was Børre.
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?urnread_imagesize=full...

There are also two women mentioned on this farm that could have been related: Karen O. Eriksdtr: http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&am...

and Maren Eriksdtr:
http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&am...
Both of them are born in Skibtvedt.

You should have studied the great collection of 'how-to' articles that I linked for you in last posting and that would help you in how to proceed. Therefore you know that "Howden" is most likely to have been the address, the name of the farm, where Anton/Anthon was either born or had other family history.

Since his small family was living in Fredrikstad, Østfold before they emigrated I would think it most likely that he was originally from the city of Fredrikstad or from a more rural district quite nearby.

So searching the 1865 Norwegian online database for a male, given name starting with "Ant", surname starting with "Eri" and born between 1850 and 1851, from some part of Østfold -- there is only one close match.
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&...

BONUS points for the name of the farm where he is living in 1865 -- Hovden!! Has to be it!! V and W were so often interchangeable. The district is Tune in Østfold, Norway so that is where to search for Anton/Anthon birth/baptismal record.

See baptism #1 for 1851 --
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=454&id...

If you've already studied the 'how-to' articles you should be ahead of the game. The Norwegian parish church records are also available online now.

The Digitalarkivet web site - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&a...
An English option is available by clicking on that word from either the left hand column or the blue link bar along the bottom of the homepage.
The scanned images are available from the homepage link "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] which is listed along the left hand column and from the blue banner of links along the top section of the homepage.
After you've clicked on that link and a new main page has presented on the screen be sure and read the instructions that are available from the Digitalarkivet for navigating the scanned records. The instructions are available in Bokmål (official Norwegian), Nyorsk (Norwegian), Davvisámegiella (Saami), and English.
Recommended basic reading are the "Startsiden" [Norwegian version]/"Main page" [English version], "Brukerveiledning" [Norwegian version]/"User's guide" [English version] and "Om tjenesten" [Norwegian version]/"About this service" [English version].

Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/DigitalArchives.htm...

Thank you so much for the information on Anton and Augusta Eriksen/Howden. He must've changed their name when he got to America. I remember my father talking about how his father was afraid for people to know they were Norwegian. My father never knew about his heritage until he was 70. He had been told he was Irish and he was part Irish/Canadian on his mother's side. This is remarkable. Now I have another name to search. I am still trying to find Anton and Augusta's parents names. Any suggestions how to proceed? Paula Howden Baskette

Hello. I am trying to find more information on Eric Noel Thomas, who married Doris Myrtle Howden, on 16 July 1930, in St Martin's, Jhansi, India.

Eric Thomas was born in the late 1890s. Doris Howden was born on 13 February 1911 in Lucknow, India. Her siblings were Coral Alice (1913 Lucknow) and Horace Roland (1915 Jhansi); and their parents were Edwin George Howden and Coral Mabel Mispelaar.

Eric and Doris had children Audrey Philomena (1938) and Elaine Thelma (1940) - and probably Joan, Alison and George as well.

Thank you, and good luck with your own researches.

Matthew Wilde.

Hi Lilian

I am interested in your reference to Yester, East Lothian. My ggggrandfather, Hay Howden, was born in Yester on 9 October 1764 and moved to London in the late 18th Century. I believe his parents were Peter (or Patrick) Howden & Janet Renton. He had (at least) two brothers - John (b Long Yester 17 July 1757) & Peter (b. Yester 1770). I wonder whether there is any connection to your gggrandfather? Do you have any more info about William?

His age on the 1881 cesus is given as 40 where he is a coal miner living with his wife and family in Methley.

On the 1841 census there is an Alfred Howden aged 2 living with Benjamin Howden aged 55,Jesse Howden aged 20, John Howden aged 14 and Ann Howden aged 4. I suspect that Benjamin may be Alfred and Ann's' grandfather and that their mother is in service elsewhere or perhaps dead. In 1851 a 13 year old Alfred Howden, coal miner born Overton is visiting a Waring family in Ledham on census night. I haven't been able to find Alfred on the 1861 and 1871 censuses although I have got a note of your Jesse Howden in 1861 aged 41 with wife Martha and children Annis (9), Isabel (6), Anne (3) and Alfred (1) and earlier in 1851 with older children Ellen (4) and Elizabeth (1).

I wonder if you know or can confirm whether the Alfred Howden whose age is given as 2 on the 1841 census is the same Alfred who is aged 40 on the 1881 census. Also whether this Alfred was Benjamin Howden's son or grandson?

Many thanks
Ann Johnston
Sorry, I do not think there is a connection with my branch of the Howden family. If I discover anything in the future that possibly suggests a link, I will certainly be in touch.

Richard had a twin brother, Robert who died in WWII in Anzio, Italy.
