Hi Cindy

Joseph E. Howe is my 3rd great grandfather. His father was David Howe, his mother was Polly Elkins. Both were from Tunbridge VT. They are both buried in the Button Cemetery in Tunbridge. My line goes as follows,

Joseph E Howe & Hannah Miles Howe
Russell Seymour Howe & Eliza Jane Iles
Julia A Howe who married George Houser
Lee Vernon Houser & Louise Gartz Houser
Leo Vernon Houser & Carmela Bovenzi (my parents)
Lee N. Houser

Hannah Miles Howe died in 1865 Parishville NY
Joseph E Howe died in 1871 Boyne Falls MI

I have connected the dots & i's to be approved by the Sons of the American Revolution

After David Howe died in Tunbridge VT the kids all signed a quick claim deed to their mother Polly Elkins Howe. The first sibling to sign was Joseph E Howe.

I figured Joseph E. Howe & family moved first to Cannan NH late 1840's and then to Manchester NH and about 1854 to Parishville NY.

If you want to contact my telephone number
315-462-3287
e-mail Lhouser2@rochester.rr.com

I know your David Hazen Howe (Russell Seymour Howe brother) eventually moved to Stevens Point WI where he is buried. He died in 1920. Webster & Rufus are buried in Parishville NY, Hillcrest Cemetery. Russell Seymour Howe is buried in Boyne Falls MI.

Yes, thanks...I actually have Betsey and all the Rogers relatives plus Abraham's marriage, etc.
There's a great Howe family website, but sadly they don't have a birth or death date either. And I would think we could at least figure that part out.
So I am hoping one of the genies who visit here will have other suggestions.

Framingham MA, 1871. higginsonbooks.com

I have purchased several books from them and have been quite please with their services. Give them a look, they won't look up anything for you. I found content of some of the books that I have on the web before I purchased. Good luck.

I am looking for a source for birth and death dates for Abraham Howe son of Isaac Howe Jr. of Framingham. I am related through his daughter Betsey. Framingham history book mentions him with no dates. I'm thinking a DEATH date would lead us back to land records, tax records, probate records or something. Help or suggestions anyone?

Howe/How

I am researching my How ancestors. I have managed to trace back to my my GGGrandfather Dixon How who died in Nottingham in c1835 at the age of 39 years. I have found a birth of a Dixon Howe 1796 in Monkwearmouth - Durham. He was the son of
Peter Howe and Ann (Brown?). Is this my GGGrandfather. Please can anyone give me any information on any ancestors who carry the name of ...... Dixon Howe. The story in my family goes that there was money left in Chancery by a lady with the surname of Dixon. She was unmarried and left no will but a Sister married a male Howe/How. Thus the reason of the name Dixon being carried down the male line. Is this story familiar to anyone? My Father also did mention to me that we come from a family of searfarers. My GGGrandfather was a Customs Officer in London where he married an Elizabeth Cox and some of his children were born and in Nottingham where other children were born and died and where he himself died. I would be interested to hear from anyone who has Howe/How's originating from the Tyneside area.
Thank you Elizabeth How

For those interested, Artemas Howe's home in Bolton is actually now located in the town of Berlin, MA. From a review of current and past Assessor's maps and theses property deeds, it can be said that that his property would be in the south-east corner of Berlin south of Gates Pond and his house would have been about at the end of Summer Road off Sawyer Hill Road.

From this it can be assumed that all of Artemas and Abigail Howe's children who's births are all recorded in Bolton would have been born down there in what is now Berlin.

This just puts things into perspective.

Where would I find a copy of the Howe Genealogies? Was it published, so it's available through library loan, or is it something that was done by a family and they have the only copies? I'd like to see if I could find more details on Addie and check them against the books.

Thanks again for the information you've provided.

The 2 volume Howe Genealogies indices list 61 Howe females named either Ada, Adaline, Addie, Adelaide , Adeline or Adelia. One of them may be your Addie (or not). At one time, in the Brookfield, MA area, there were about 150 Howe households scattered among equally prolific Brighams, Youngs and other similar clans. Brigham Young's mother was a Howe. The details are what differentiates one from another. You can never provide enough details. Good luck!

I can see that now. I'm new at these posts and didn't know how much I should put in it. Also didn't expect someone else to have the same name. It doesn't seem like it would have been that common. Makes me wonder if perhaps my Addie might have been somehow related to the parents of the Addie you found.

Hi. I really appreciate your reply. I'm afraid this is the wrong Addie. Addie was born in 1861. My grandfather, Ira Orson Fuller's and Addie's son, was born in 1881. They probably married when she was about 16, since her first child was born in 1877. Ira was born in 1841.

We have a family bible from 1866 that lists her as Addie Estelle Howe, Born Oct 3, 1861 in Morison, Mirrue (sp?) New York. But, we haven't been able to find any further info on her heritage.
This is the entry in the 1286 page Howe Genealogies that might fit your Addie. Significantly, Harry William had no recorded male siblings in these books.

HARRY William8 HOWE (Joseph W.7,Horace6, Asa5, Asa4,Abraham3, Joseph2, Abraham1 of Marlborough, MA)
born in Acworth, N.

Addie was married to Ira O. Fuller. She was born in New York and they moved to Belle Plaine, Shawano, Wisconsin. I can't find Addie's parents' names. I have a photo of a Laura Howe. On the back there was a message that it was Addie's son Ellsworth's cousin. So, we don't know if Laura's father was Addie's brother, or perhaps a younger son of Addie's parents. We also don't know for sure if Addie's name was Addie or Adeline.

I'd appreciate any help in finding who Addie's parents and/or siblings were.

Artemas Howe of Bolton land records to Holman Priest

This is a deed of land in Bolton from Artemas How now of Marlborough, Middlesex, MA to Holman Priest of Bolton. It is dated 18 Jun 1776 and appears to be the last piece of property in Bolton sold by Artemas How. It would seem that this parcel was next to the property sold to Bezeleel Hale.

The language is different from the other two deeds of land sold to Bezeleel Hale and Ebenezer Worster as those two were made on a "legal form" and this one just recorded in the book of deeds. It is unclear if this language is of any significance to genealogical research. It is known that, unlike the other two transactions, this deed did not require his wife Abigail's signature.

Via Bolton vital records, Holman Priest would be the son of Gabriel Priest Sr. and Sarah Sawyer born in Bolton 3 Oct 1758, who's intent to marry Prudence Sawyer was recorded in Bolton on 28 Apr 1774. There is a Holman Priest who died in Berlin, Jan. 22, 1831, a. 85 y., but this is a 12 year difference in age. However: Prudence, w. H[olman. G.R.1.], Jan. 2, 1817, a. 76 y. is also listed in Berlin records.

NOTE: The date this deed was witnessed by the justice of the Peace in Worcester, Worcester, MA on 28 Nov 1776 would place Artemas How still in the area. If true he settled in Brattleboro, VT in 1777, this deed would narrow down the date when he left.

---------------------------

Worcester Registry of Deeds
book 80, pages 378, 379

To all people to whom these presents shall come, Greetings, Know Ye that I Artemas How of Marlborough in the County of Middlesex and Province of the Massachusetts Bay in New England, Husbandman, for and in consideration of the sum of sixty pounds, thirteen shillings and four pence to me in hand before the ensealing thereof ____ _____ paid by Holman Priest of Bolton in the County of Worcester & Province aforesaid, Husbandman the _____ of I do hereby acknowledge & my ____ herewith _____ _____ ____ & con____ and _____ and by Every part & parcel thereof do Exonerate acquit & Di___ him the said Holman Priest his heirs Executors & Administrators forever by ______ presents have given granted Bargained Sold aliened conveyed & confirmed and by these presents Do freely fully and absolutely Give Grant bargain sell aliene convey & confirm unto him the said Holman Priest his heirs & assigns forever

Forty acres ______ five rods of land situate in Bolton Bounding Southerly on land of Bezeleel Hale, Easterly on land of Eleazer Johnson, Northerly on land of John Foy & land of Nathan Jones, Westerly on land of Jonathan Wheeler beginning at a Maple & runs southerly four rods to a heap of stones then Easterly as Marks Direct one hundred & forty four rods to a ______ then North 18 (degrees) west fifty two rods to a heap of stones thence west 18 (degrees) south seventy five rods to a heap of stones then North one degree west Twenty eight rods to a black oak then West 3 (degrees) south ninety rods to a heap of stones then south about fifty three rods to a heap of stones then strait to the first mentioned bounds To have and to hold the said granted and bargained premises with all the appurtenances privileges & commodities to the same belonging or in any wise appertaining to him the said Holman Priest his heirs & assigns forever to his _____ only proper use benefit & _____ forever and I Artemas How for my self my heirs Executors & Administrators do _____________ _________ & grant to and with him the said Holman Priest his heirs & assigns ___ before the ensealing herof I am the true sole & lawfull owner of the above bargained premises and am lawfully seized & ________ of the same in my own proper rights as a good _______ & absolute Estate of inheritance in the _____ and have in myself good rights full power & Lawfull Authority to grant bargain sell convey & confirm said bargained premises in Manner as aforesaid and that the said Holman Priest his heirs & assigns shall & may from time to time & at all times forever _______ by force & ______ of _____ presents lawfully peaceably & quietly have hold ___ Occupy _____ & enjoy the said _______ & bargained premises with the app____ free & clear & freely & clearly ________ exonerated & Discharged of from all & all manner of former or other gifts grants bargains sales leases mortgages wills entail jointures Dowries judgements Executions or ___________ of what ever name or nature soever that might in amy measure or Degree obstruct or make void this present Deed.
Artemas Howe of Bolton land records to Jonathan Wheeler

The following two deeds appear to represent a common land swap between neighbors Artemas How and Jonathan Wheeler both of Bolton, Worcester, MA. They seem to swap "a little strip of Land" from one side of their property for another side. This is a two rod wide strip (approximately 33 feet) from a road to the back of their respective property that would suggest the creation of a drive or right of way to access land behind their property. As to who needed this, that as yet is unknown.

The two deeds, one being already mentioned in the original post, were written on 4 Dec 1769 and witnessed before the justice of the Peace on 21 May 1771, but were recorded in Worcester book of deeds more then eleven years apart.

-------------------

Worcester Registry of Deeds
book 93, pages 261, 262

Know all men by these present that I, Artemas How of Bolton in the County of Worcester and Province of the Massachusetts Bay New England, yeoman in consideration of six Shillings Lawful money paid by Jonathan Wheeler of the same Town County & Province aforesaid Glazier I do hereby give grant & convey unto the said Jonathan Wheeler his heirs a little strip of Land two rods wide align at a white oak & ____ the former corner of Jonathan Wheelers Land that was formerly Josiah Willsons __ _____ by that former line of Wheelers to the Road two rods wide To have & to hold the same to the said Jonathan Wheeler his heirs and I do _______ with the said Jonathan Wheeler his heirs and assign that I am lawfully ____ & ______ of the same & have in my self good right to sell & convey the same to the said Jonathan Wheeler his heirs and assigns forever against the lawful claims of all persons ________ _____ I the said Artemas How have here unto set my hand and seal this fourth day of December one Thousand Seven hundred & sixty nine & in the tenth year of his Majesty's Reign George the third.
Artemas How (seal)

Signed sealed & delivered in the witnesses
Jonathan Wheeler Jr.,
Mary Wheeler

Worcester May 21, 1771 the above named Artemas How appearing acknowledged the above written instrument to be his free _____ Deed before me
John Whiticomb Justice of the Peace

Recd May 30, 1785 Entered & Examined, Dan ________ Reg

-------------------

Worcester Registry of Deeds
book 71, page 533

Know all men by these present that I, Jonathan Wheeler of Bolton in the County of Worcester and Providence of the Massachusetts Bay in New England, Glazier in consideration of ____ Shillings lawful Money paid by Artemas How of the same Town County Province aforesaid Husbandman I do here by give, grant and convey unto the said Artemas How his heirs a Little Strip of Land two Rods Wide to the Road it begins at a Maple Tree Artemas How's farms _ _ Mask and Runs Between the fence and said Tree to the Way as it is now fenced To have & to hold the fence to the said Artemas How his heirs and I do ________ with the said Artemas How his heirs and assigns that I am lawfuly ______ and _______ of the Same and have in my self good Rights to sell and convey the Same to the said Artemas How his heirs and assigns forever against the lawful Claims of all persons in ________ here of I the said Jonathan Wheeler have here unto set my hand & Seal this fourth Day of December One thousand Seven hundred & Sixty Nine and in the _______ year of his Majesty's Reign George the third I Jonathan Wheeler _____ signed Sealed & Delivered in Presence of us witnesses Jonathan Wheeler Jun.
Artemas Howe of Bolton land records and loan with Daniel Bruce of Bolton

The following deed is the corresponding recorded related to Worcester Registry of Deeds book 73, pages 426, 427 posted above. It would seem that on or about 7 May 1771 Daniel Bruce and Artemas How both of Bolton owned or borrowed 80 pounds from Daniel McCarthy of Boston and used as collateral their property in Bolton. This loan was for one year and due 7 May 1772, but was not paid back until 1776.

Daniel Bruce of Bolton puts up 110 acres of land
Artemas How puts up 50 acres of land

This bond required not only Daniel Bruce and Artemas How's signatures, but also required their wives signatures as well.

Thus this deed relates to:

Daniel Bruce born 22 Feb 1701 and died 13 Feb 1790
Bathsheba (Bouker) Bruce his wife
Artemas How born 23 Mar 1734 and died before 17 Oct 1798
Abigail his wife

The record makes little sense if the parties are not related. Daniel Bruce would be about 70 years old. This deed is witnessed by his son, Daniel Bruce Jr., born 21 Sep 1752, and the land bound on one side by Benjamin Bruce, thought to be his son born 24 Dec 1739 and on another side by his son-in-law Cyrus Gates with another side bounded by an unknown William Bruce. The 50 acres Artemas How, who is just 37 years old at the time, offers up, appears to not be attached to the Bruce land at all.

-----------------------------------

Worcester Registry of Deeds
book 64, pages 396, 397

Know all men by these present that we Daniel Bruce and Artemas How both of Bolton in the County of Worcester and Province of the Massachusetts Bay yoemen In consideration of the just sum of Eighty Pounds lawfull money to us in _____ _____ before _____ Deliver ___ ______ by Daniel McCarthy of Boston in the county of Suffolk in said Province, Mariner ______ ___ ______ ____ do hereby Acknowledge have Given Granted Bargained and Sold and do by _______ ______ give grant Bargain Sell _____ and fully _____ and _________ convey and _______ unto him this said Daniel McCarthy his heirs and assigns forever
A Certain Tract or piece of land lying in Bolton aforsaid Containing One hundred and ten acres Bounded Northeasterly on land of Benjamin Bruce, Southerly on land of Daniel Barnes and John Banister, Southwesterly on land of Cyrus Gates, Westerly on land of Robert Fostett and Ezehiel Fostett, Northerly on land of William Bruce Also a piece of land lying in said Bolton containing Fifty Acres Bounded Northerly on land of Nathan Jones easterly on Land of said Nathan Jones and Eleazer Johnson southerly on Land belonging to said Artemas How and westerly on Land of Jonathan Wheeler or however other of the said Piece is bounded be the same more or less together with all the Buildings thereon Standing ________ with the ___________ thereto Belonging to have and to hold the said granted and Bargained ___________ Together ______ all Heirs _______ ____ All __________ Whatsoever to him the said Daniel McCarthy his heirs and assigns as __________ Estate of inheritance in ___ ___________ forever and they the said Daniel Bruce and Artemas How for themselves their heirs _____ and _______ do hereby Co_______ to Warrant and defind the ____________ _________ as unto the said Daniel McCarthy his heirs and assigns forever against the lawfull claims and demands of all Persons Provided always __ ____ ______ ____ _______ Condition that of the said Daniel Bruce and Artemas How they or Either of them their _____ Exors or Admors ____________ the said Daniel McCarthy his Exors Admers or assigns _____ Sum of Eighty Pounds Lawfull Money and ______ for the Same by the Seventh day of May A D 1772 years ______ to the said Condition of their Bond this day _____ and Given to this said Daniel McCarthy and all ___________ ____ _______ them this deed as well as the said Bond shall be void __ in Default ______ of shall Remain in fullforce and Bathsheba wife of the said Daniel Bruce and Abigail wife of said Artemas How do hereby Release all their right of Dower in the ____________ aforedescribed ____ __________ of all that is Before written We the said Daniel and Bathsheba Bruce, Artemas & Abigail How do ____ ___ in hands and Seals this seventh day of May A D _ one Thousand Seven hundred and Seventy one
Sign Sealed and delivered in the presence of us
Daniel Bruce Jr., _____ W________
Worcester ___ May 8 1771

Daniel Bruce seal
Bathsheba Bruce seal
Artemas How seal
Abigail (X) How seal

The _____ named Daniel Bruce Bathsheda Bruce Artemas How & Abigail How appearing acknowledge this _______ written _________ _____ to be their free ____ and deed Before me John Wh____ jus.
Artemas Howe of Bolton land records

For those interested in the family of Artemas Howe of Bolton, MA, Brattleboro, VT, and Westford, NY, below are two deeds that establish that Artemas Howe was of Marlborough, Middlesex, MA as of 13 May 1776, yet still had property in Bolton. It also can be established that via an article printed in The Vermont Phoenix, Brattleboro, 16 Jan 1891, Artemas Howe settled in Brattleboro in 1777.

NOTE: What seems odd about the latter Deed is that by its language it links two apparently separate parcels of land to both Daniel Bruce and Artemas How, yet the 1st parcel is clearly linked to the Bruce family and the 2nd clearly linked to Artemas How's interest. Also it seems unusual for a "Mariner" to have 2 parcels of land in Bolton. In addition, via the witness named Isaac Savage, this Daniel McCarthy maybe Daniel McCarthy of Bedford, a Mariner, who married Ann Savage in Boston on 1 Feb 1759. This Daniel McCarthy is believed to the master of the Brigantine Rebecca. How the Bruce, How, and McCarthy families relate to create this land sale, if at all is the question.

--------------------------

John Wesley Howe b. 1802 Kentucky m.Sarah Williams. Their second child, Hiram Hinxton Howe b. 1826 m. Nancy Hogg. They had a son John Wesley Howe b. 1856 m. Arena Susan Vincent. They are the parents of my grandmother Monta Elizabeth Howe b. 1883. All of these Howes are buried in Polk, Bates or Vernon counties in Missouri. My research is coming up with James Andrew Howe b. 1774 m. Martha Ann Hood, as parents of the first John Wesley Howe, b. 1802.

Hi, Just browsing through the boards and saw your post. There is no Bourbon County in Missouri, but there is a Bourbon County, Kansas which borders Missouri. You might want to focus your search there. I am descended from a Howe line in Polk, Bates, and Vernon Counties in Missouri in the mid to late 1800's. We have several James Howes, but I do not show the name Emaline in my research.

Not related to the ones you're looking for. My father was adopted by Harold Pembroke Howe who was born in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada. His father, Cheslynne Dunbar Howe, was born in London, Ontario and he moved his family to Detroit, MI and later he moved to Ottawa, KS, where he died. His father was George howe, born in England, but landed in London, Ontario, when he was about 15. I can't find his father nor the England connection. And I can't find my father's adoption records either.

I don't have anything to actually connect my Henry A Howe m to Mary Wilcox to Henry & Caroline Howe except for the census records that show a Henry & Caroline had a son named Henry born about the same year and a daughter named Ella. Later census records and ancestry searchs show an Ella in Kansas with her father named Henry who died in Kansas yet I have something that indicates he died in Michigan. Different census records show Henry (m to Caroline) was born in either NY or MA. I was hoping somebody would have something to make a definite connection.
