Amelia (Mealy, melie, Melia, etc.) Howell

I am looking for info about my gr-gr-grandmother Amelia Howel (married name). All I know is that she is listed in various ways on the census records: (1880 Census Meby; 1900 Census Melie; 1910 Census Mechy; 1920 Census Mealy). She was Native American (I have been told Blackfeet or Blackfoot but I have no records of that and no information about her surname). She would have been born approx. 1865 in Georgia, USA. She was married to John (T.) Howell (1855) and had abt 12 kids. Of them I know of:
Volian 1880
Rosa(llia) 1878
Detroit 1882
Julia 1884
Willie/Wilson 1890
Cora Lee 1892
Hornsby 1896 (my gr-grandfather)
John (JT) 1899
Ernest 1909

All dates are from various census records and may be approximate.
Funeral services at 2 o'clock at the family residence, corner North Division and Perry streets. Rev M. Teague officiating. Freinds of the bereaved family are cordially invited to attend.
Based on date of inquiry, I assume you have already visited and found the grave site. If not, the grave is located in the burial groud surrounding Memorial Hall in the center of town. It is located directly behind the building and is one of the most unusual grave markers seen, as (you probably know) was wrought by Zadok Howe himself, from bog iron taken from Lake Massapoag in Sharon, the next town over. If you have not made it to the site, I have several photos I could send you.

John Howel 1840 Ohio Census

I am searching for info on John Howel who is on the 1840 Fairfield County (Richland Township), Ohio census. John is listed as 20-30 years of age with two boys under five, one girl under five and a wife age 30 to 40. He may be the husband of Margarett Howel, widow, as listed on the 1850 Fairfield County census. Margaret had seven children, Mary C., Morgan, Elias T, John, Eliza J. James W. and Joseph. I believe Elias stayed in Ohio and remainder of the family moved to IL after 1850. I am hoping someone knows of birth, marriage and death records for this family. Any and all help would be appreciated.

Looking further at records has my Maria Howel(l) (my 2g-grandmother) was born Jan 10, 1816 in NY or England. She died Oct. 27, 1895 in Davenport, Scott, Co. Iowa. She was married February 18, 1836 to Rev Lucas Calvin Woodford in ?Spencer. Tioga Co, NY? and had 4 children. First Norman born 1838 Tioga Co, NY and died 1848 Jackson Co.Iowa. Second Clarrissa Ann, b 1843 Brome Co, NY and died 1847 in ?. Third was Elma Abigail (my g-grandmother) b 1848 in Iowa and died 1931 in Iowa. Fourth was another Norman b. 1851 Iowa and d 1929 Illinois.
Apparently the family came to Iowa (I'm amending this after looking at my chart) pre-1848.
Some of the information comes from census, some from Methodist Conference records. Some from family letters.

I can only add that Maria Howel(l) and husband Lucas Woodford moved to Iowa from NY between 1843 and 1851. It could still be possible these folks mentioned earlier are all relatives. I do know possible siblings of Lucas Woodford married a Livingston and a Sackett, but not sure where they lived.

I am wondering what resources are available to you. I have suspicions about both Eli Howell and David Howell. I think Eli Howell may have been the son of Jonathan Howell, of Long Island, and was born in about 1761. An Eli Howell was enumerated in Shawangunk Township, Ulster County, New York, in 1790, with one male over 16, one under, and one female. I have suspected that he may have been the father of a second Eli Howell, who appears to have gone to Wayne County, Pennsylvania. This is all problematical. The Eli Howell in spencer died on 22 May 1834, at the age of 48 years, 11 months and 22 days, so he could have been a son of the one born on 1761.
I suspect David Howell was born in Ulster County in about 1795-6, since he died on 2 Oct 1870, AE 74. I suspect he was a son of Jeremiah and Elthena (Harris) Howell. He's in the 1850 Census, and did have a daughter, Mariah, but she was 21 then. He had a son, Jeremiah, which gives added credence to the idea that his father was Jeremiah, who was also a son of Jonathan. Jonathan was a son of John, who was a son of Richard, who was the primogenitor of that Howell family. Unfortunately, a lot of this is speculation based on coincidences. I wish I could help more, but I am happy to learn of someone else who cares about these people.

Margaret Howel & family 1850 Ohio

Searching for info regarding Margaret Howel as listed on the 1850 Ohio census for Fairfield County, OH. Her children: Mary C. age 13, Morgan A. age 12, Elias T. age 10, John L. age 8, Eliza J. age 6, James W. age 5 and Joseph age 2 - all born in OH. (Mary C. married Samuel Inbody/Imbody under the name of Howell in 1853.) I found (who I believe are) the 5 younger children, listed on the 1870 census, in the household of James and Mary Craig of Shelby County and listed under the surname of Howell. I am trying to confirm whether or not Margaret Howel was he daughter of James & Mary Craig. From what I have come across both the Howell and Imbody families were illiterate.....hence the change in the spelling of the surnames. Any and help would be GREATLY appreciated!

I just discovered my ancestor Maria Howel came from Spencer, NY. She was born 1816 and censuses both proclaim her birth as New York and as England. She was married in 1836, probably there. She married Rev. Lucas C Woodford of Candor, NY. I have discovered two Howel names in the 1820 census -- David and Eli. Likely relatives. Any clues from anyone?

Hello.. I am looking to see if I can track down
a Christina or Christiana Howel, possibly spelled Howell
It is recorded she was married in 1831 in the
"London District" Of Ontario to Samuel Healy (or Healey)
In 1861, she is recorded as being 48 yrs old, and a widow, living in SOuth
Norwich Township (at the village of Springford Ontario) living
with several children, the youngest being 3 yrs old.
From then on, records of her completely disappear.. I am hoping someone
will recognize the name and help me find out where she came from, where she died (we suspect Springford
Ontario but so far cant prove it) and when/where/and what her husband Samuel died from ( it appears he died between 1857 and 1861)

Thanks

Have a Hannah Swinford who married Abatha Howell in Harrison Co, IN in 1816.

In 1820 Abiathar Howell was in Hardin Co, IN (just across the Ohio river from Harricon Co, IN) The family contained children too old for the 1816 marriage. I have always wondered if Hannah had been married to a Swinford and her maiden name was something else. Have never been able to find a Hannah Swinford among the Swinford clan.

In 1850 census in Vigo Co, IN, both Abiather age 56 and Hannah age 65 said they were born in SC. They were living with son (David S Howell age 27 born in KY).

Would be interested in knowing more about your Hannah Hayes. The name Haynes seems to come up in this family.

Zee Lektrol@aol.com
