Yes it takes forever to try and straighten it all out. I found the same problem with my husbands tree and his cousin actually did the research! I think they wanted to be related to someone famous so they just attached to that name. I could find no connection.
I also am glad to find others who feel the way I do.

I know when I first signed up, I thought I hit the mother load. All this research had all been done for me, I mean how simple could it get? I attached it to my tree before looking, how stupid. It has taken me years to straighten out the mess I created. I learned my lesson, but so many others have not.

Yes. It is amazing how many names are the same in the 1700's and 1600's in the US. And some of my people seem to have flown under the radar so to speak. Meaning that they didn't do anything that required that it be recorded in any legal way. But I will keep searching. Even if I have to go to the states and counties that are involved.

No, but I will do that. I was a little afraid that the others would come back with the info that they have in their trees that is incorrect and I didn't want to discuss it with them. Things like, the mother is in the US but the son that she gives birth to is born in Wales. How does that work for ya! Hey, I could be wrong. She might have decided to take a trip to Wales, have a son, leave him there until he was an adult and then he traveled to Barbados before coming to the US. Meanwhile she died the year she gave birth to him and she died in the US. Crazy how they think that all makes sense. Then they connect him to this Edward Howell who was famous for being one of the founding fathers of Southhampton, Long Island. The guy that was from Wales was not related to Edward because I found someone via google search, who had DNA testing done and the two definitely are not related. I just don't want to get into all that with the others. But it is worth a try as you suggested.

I agree with you 100% -- So many people just add things to their trees willy-nilly that most of them are worthless! Researching your own line with reliable documents is the way to go.

Have you tried posting the man's info on the Howell board?
I may be able to find out who had the bible originally by contacting the person who started the family tree maker. I found their public tree via google. I will see if they will answer an email, that is if I can send them one. I have found that most all of the trees on ancestry have made mistakes concerning my family. I sometimes wonder if people even look at what they are attaching to their trees. I like to do the research and find proof then I can accept that the person is indeed my ancestor. I have hit a stumbling block with one man and cannot find where he was born. But I will keep searching. He definitely is not the man other trees say is the father of one of my grandfather's seven generations back.

I searched worldcat.org and many Howell family bibles came up. Do you have any more info re: names of original owners? or their location?

In general you could try libraries, historical societies, genealogical societies, surname societies, ethnic societies, occupational societies-- and for all of these at town/city, county, state, and national levels.

Was she married? Did she have children? If so, you could try to find any survivors who may still have the bible.

Do you have her obituary?

(Also, it's genealogist -- Sorry, I just had to point that out!)

Thomas Howell - Benjamin berry Howell - Daniel boone - Jemimah Boone

I have found all kinds of discrepancies after this link. The info I see is that Susannah Boone Callaway was the daughter of Jemimah Boone and Flanders Calloway (or Callaway). I see that Susannah supposedly married Thomas Howell. (with different birth and death data). They supposedly had 9 children. Now, on the other side of them, I have my ggrandmother, Loretta Lucy Noland. Parents are Daniel Noland and Sally Lucy Howell. Sally's parents were Benjamin "or Berry" or Benjamin Berry Howell and Lucy Quarles. Here's the strange part----- Benjamin (berry) Howell's parents are listed as Susannah Boone Callaway and Thomas Howell. But, he is only listed on Thomas Howell's son, but he is not on the list of Thomas and Susannah's 9 children. Can anyone help me solve this?

Benjamin & Catherine Papen Howell Did Not Have Children

There has been a big misunderstanding that Benjamin & Catherine Papen Howell were the parents of children named Benjamin, Joseph, Joshua, Jonathan, Daniel, Hannah, Sarah & Barbara. According to Benjamin’s will written 18 July 1774 and proved 28 September 1774 in Philadelphia County, PA, no children were listed in his will. Instead, Benjamin’s will left his property to his wife, cousins, a neighbor, and his servant. Listed in his will were: his wife, Catherine; cousin, John Howell; cousin, Daniel Howell; Jonathan, Daniel, Hannah & Sarah Howell, children of his cousin, John Howell; cousin, Susannah Quick; cousin, Isaac Rittenhouse; neighbor, Barbera Edwards; servant, William Brown and George Klingle, no relationship given.

It appears that several of the cousins and the neighbor listed in Benjamin’s will incorrectly have been thought to be his children, namely, Jonathan, Daniel, Hannah, Sarah Howell & Barbara Edwards. It is unclear where the names, Benjamin, Joseph & Joshua came from, but the fact is that Benjamin & Catherine did not have children. There are a number of family trees on Ancestry.com, Rootsweb and other sites that state Benjamin & Catherine were the parents of these children, and it seems that no one has bothered to check sources to prove this information. The following transcription of Benjamin’s will, makes it clear that he did not name any children in his will. Therefore it can be more correctly assumed that Benjamin & Catherine did not have children; otherwise they would have been mentioned in his will and he would not have given his property to his cousins instead.

Philadelphia County, PA, Book Q44
Be it Remembred that I Benjamin Howell of Germantown Township in the County of Philadelphia and Province of Pennsylvania Yeoman ---- Being Aged and Infirm in body but through the blessing of God of sound disposing mind & memory – Do therefore think fit to dispose of all my Outward Effects which it hath pleased God to bestow upon me in the Following manner. Was I looking at the right person?

Thanks for the invite. This July 29 2012 my kids and I will be at a reunion in south ga. with the Burgman/Bell family. It's the only time I will be able to take off all year. Is that the time your coming down? We will be at Moody Field Airforce base on the camp grounds in valdosta. Wish I we could meet. Now as far as the location of the family you will find them in Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, Daytona, even here in NYC. We are all up and down the east coast. My son-in-law is a Jenkins, but I don't know much about their family history.

I know, right? For a long while I didn't know who my grandmother was until my sister in California (now deceased) ran into a lady that was from Valdosta at a convention in Philadelphia, who just happened to be my cousin. She introduced her to others that was living in the same city as we lived that were also cousins on the Howell side of the family. Now we all keep in contact. I also met some more family on Ancestry that were Howells that lives in Ft Lauderdale.

Were you able to release the name of the Jenkins that married into your family?

We are having a family reunion in July 2012 in St Petersburb/Clearwater. Would you guys be interested in coming?

George Howell's daughter, Mary, was my grandmother, that I never knew cause I was bought up in the north. You mentioned that a Jenkins married into your family, which one? Mary Howell, my grandmother, married Coaster Jenkins.

I have Howells in southern Indiana, starting in the 1870s.
I don't know if my family is related, but there are some Thomases, so I thought I would tell you a little about my family to see if anything sounds familiar. My grandfather was Thomas Garvin Howell, born in 1913. His father was Claude Woodson Howell b. 1886 and Claude's father was Daniel Howell. Claude talked about being raised in Illinois, but as far as I know, Lawrence county, Indiana seemed to be where most of my family lived. Daniel married Jane Melvin in Bedford In in Dec 1875, but I can't find anything else about his birth or his parents or siblings. If any of this is familiar, please let me know and of course, I am happy to trade information as well. Thank you

He was of the general timeframe and there are quite a few distinguished William Stokes participants on both sides of the war, but I could never pin him down as any of them based on his location. I was curious as to my having any CSA ancestors bc I have a large amount of Union solider ancestors.

I am sure Robert paid for Mildred Smith's college, she was my husband's Aunt and his mother's sister. My mother-in-law passed away in 2003 but she talked of her Drummond/Howell relation often so she probably did.

There may have been another one, but I think that it was Margret Drummond Smith who received the college education. ?She was his great niece. We were very close to Aunt Margret. She just died this past summer right before she turned 100. He realized she had potential and tried to send her to business school. She did not like it and returned home. Then she went to Rio Grand for college to become a teacher. She eventually got her masters degree and spent most of her life teaching in the Columbus school system. It was so long ago that she had to lie about marrying Uncle Smitty (Walter Smith) so she could continue to work. It really messed up their anniversary since she did not even tell her parents. During the lean years, she used the money from teaching to send back to her family to buy food for the many brothers and sisters,(12 total). My father-in-law is the youngest. Aunt Margret's full name is Mary Margret just like Robert's mother. Mary Margret Howell died just a few years before Aunt Margret was born.

I always felt bad that Robert bought a large monument for his sister Mary Margret Howell and her husband Albert Lee Drummond has no grave marker. Then I checked the dates and fount that Robert himself died before Albert did. Possibly your mother-in-law knows my in-laws, John Harold Drummond and Juanita Rose Drummond???

My husband descends from Albert Lee Drummond and Mary M. Howell. Her father David Howell is a son of Elijah so there is the connection if you descend from John who is Elijah's brother.

According to my mother-in-law, Robert Howell was both a lawyer and a dentist and lived on Second Ave in Gallipolis, Ohio. He was also a lay minister. He had no children. He paid for his niece (Mildred V. Smith) college education to become an ordained minister.

I have found my link. Elijah had a son David. His daughter, Mary Margaret Married Albert Lee Drummond. They are my husband's great-grandparents. A cousin had David's obit with the listing. We knew about Mary Margaret and Albert L. because more recent relatives are also buried in Bethesda Cemetery near Patriot OH. Elijah's father, James in my husband's GGGG grandfather all in Ohio. James and his younger children moved on to Macon Co. Illinois where they had my family. James is also my GGGGG grandfather. We are definitely cousins, many times removed. If you need any info. that you think I might have, please email me.
tmdrummond@gmail.com
