Howie family history

My husband's mother is Margaret Howie... she descends from 3 generations of Howie doctors Alexander Howie b. abt. 1806 whose diploma from Un.of Glasgow (I have copy), his son James Howie U. of Glasgow and my husband's great grandfather, Alexander Howie(2) also a grad of U. of Glasgow. I have birth and death records for all of them but cannot find the parents of the first Dr. Alex. Howie who married Agnes Holmes in either Dumbartonshire or Ayrshire, Kilbarchan area. One of the uncles, William Howie, was a well known architect who designed buildings all over Scotland until the 1930's. Do you recognize any of these names? Hope to hear from you.
John Howie b. Kilmarnock 1817

My gg grandfather was John Howie b. in Kilmarnock in 1817. I know his wife's name was Margaret and I've been told her maiden name may have been McCurdie but I haven't found any documentation to support this.
He died in 1885 in Newcastle and the following is an excerpt from his obituary

"From the brother that settled in Lochgoin, the subject of this memoir was a direct decendant, having been born at Kilmarnock, in Ayshire, in 1817. While yet a youth he entered into the political and social arena, and was a conspicuous parsonage in the Chartist struggles and agitated the West of Scotland at that time. In consequence he was appointed a representative to the great national conference held at Glasgow, in 1839, Fergus O'Connor being the leading speaker. Owing to the leading part he took in political and trade matters, he was compelled to quit the place of his weaver. Two or three years afterwards he removed to Barnard castle, and there worked at his craft until the introduction of machinery in the manufacture of that article necessitated the discharge of a large number of hands. Mr Howie was then compelled to turn his attention to mining in the west of Durham for a livelihood. He also identified himself with the Trades Union of the country of Durham in 1863, and he continued to take an active part in the same until the end of that year. When the great strike occurred at Messrs Straker and Love's Brancepeth collieries."

I can't find his birth on the Scotland's People website and I have very few clues to go on to find his parentage. I read an article that said he was a "close kinsman" of Dr. James Muir Howie of Liverpool. James was born in Kilmarnock in 1845/46 so I thought maybe he was John's nephew.
Does anyone have any ideas of where to look next or has anyone researched a Howie family that may include my gggrandfather?
Thanks for any help
Janet

Cordialmente, Omar A. Isaguirre

Hi, In the 1880 census in Waukesha is 7 year old Maggie A Howie with her parents Thomas aged 31 and Mary aged 29 - both parents born in Wisconsin but Thomas's parents were both Scottish. An Ancestry tree has Thomas's parents as Thomas Howie c1811 - 1858 and Mary Morton c1813 - 1893. This couple married in Loudoun Ayrshire in 1836. I think Thomas Howie was the son of John Howie c1783-1855 and Janet Mair and the grandson of James Howie and Agnes Findlay. I think at least 6 of John H and Janet M's children emigrated.
Irene

Has anyone mentioned a branch of the Howie's in Wisconsin, particularly the Waukesha County area? My great-great grandmother is Margaret Howie. She was born in 1873 and born in Wisconsin. She married Hawley Clafin and had three children.

I am at standstill on her lineage. I know her father's name was Thomas but that is all I can find. I can find out lots on the Claflin's but that line is really a dead end because Hawley Claflin was adopted by his parents (or so my great grandmother always told us that).

My great-grandmother was also adamant that we were from the MacDonald clan as well.

I have just downloaded the Page 49 of the Riccarton Birth Register from Scotland's People, and on it, it says the following:

"Howie, Hugh son to Mr (?) Howie and Janet Paton was born 4 Aug 1807 & Bapt 6"

All though it doesn't specify the father's name, I presume it is more than enough to say that it is William Howie.

I will hopefully be able to find a death certificate from South Australia today.

Strangely enough, you wouldn't happen to know about Hugh's son with Mary Dunlop, William Howie? I have seen his birth record and it states that is father is WILLIAM Howie, and his mother is Mary Dunlop. This greatly confuses me as I know that Hugh isn't really an alternate name for William, so maybe William Howie the son came from a different father?

Last night I stumbled upon a family tree online just before I went to bed. This started from Hugh Howie born in 1807 in Riccarton, Ayrshire, and works its way up to his parents, his parents' parents etc.

The tree includes:
Hugh Howie, born to William Howie (1762) and Janet Paton (1773)
William Howie, born to William Howie (1731) and Jean Gilbert (1733)
William Howie, born to James Howie (1701) and Jean Whyte/White (1703)
James Howie, born to James Howie (1677) and Martha Thomson (1681).

The website on which I found it on is:
https://www.familysearch.org/search/treeDetails/show?uri=htt...

It starts at Hugh Howie and allows you to click on the parents' names and see their parents and other siblings etc.

I know well and truly that things on the internet need to be double checked, if not triple checked. I have seen so many contradictory statements, and incorrect birth dates. It's annoying with the birth and christening dates get wrong, as I have seen that my GGrandfather was christened three years after his birthdate, and that a lot of his siblings were christened on the same day!

Anyway, I am most probably going to go to the State Library of South Australia, and look through the microfilms of certificates to give the information more credibility and dig up more information.

There are hundreds (if not thousands) of Howies in the west of Scotland ..some come from Ireland, some from the North East of Scotland .. they do not all trace back to Lochgoin. 'Reading' that Hugh was the son of Wm Howie and Janet Paton is not enough ...you need something to prove it eg his Aus death cert with his parents names??

I once found a tree online that supposedly took my ancestors back to 400BC. It was just a pity about the father who died in 1679 some years before his son was born in 1791. I tracked down the author and she admitted she'd just plucked names to fit. Anything that's online needs double checked!!

I had always wondered where Alexander Howie (Smith) fit into the tree. I hadn't seen before that he was Jean Smith's son from a previous husband or man. I understand that Hugh's three children before Jean were from two different wives also.

I have read that Hugh's parents are William Howie and Janet Paton. I have also read that William Howie's parents are William Howie and Jean Gilbert.

In what way does this tree not tally with the one held in Lochgoin Farmhouse?

I don't see how Hugh Howie's family could not be descended from the Howies of Lochgoin.

Hugh Howie is in Galston in 1841 with his 3 eldest children Mary, William and Hugh - also in the household is Jean Smith and 3 year old Alexander Smith. By 1851 the family are in Riccarton with Jean as his wife and 4 more children plus Alexander who has taken the surname Howie.
A tree on Ancestry suggests Hugh's parents might be William Howie and Janet Paton. The tree then traces back to the Howies of Lochgoin but it does not tally with the tree held in Lochgoin farmhouse.
Irene

Hugh Howie and Jean Smith are also either my GGG Grandparents, or GGGG Grandparents, I haven't quite deduced that. I come from a direct line to the Lochgoin farm, and am lucky enough to carry the name Howie. Are you able to tell me which of Hugh and Jean's children is your GG Grandparent?

Hugh Howie and his family arrived in South Australia aboard the "Steadfast" which departed London on 19 Jul 1852, and Plymouth on 28 Jul 1852, and arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia, on 15 Nov 1852. The members of the family on the ship include:
Howie, Hugh, aged 39, from Ayr, Scotland
Howie, Jean (nee Smith), aged 34
Howie, Mary, aged 18
Howie, Alexander, aged 15
Howie, William, aged 14
Howie, Hugh, aged 14
Howie, Charles, aged 10
Howie, Jean, aged 6
Howie, James, aged 4
Howie, Janet, aged 1

Hugh is believed to have been born in 1808 in Ayrshire (?) and died in 1858 in Adelaide.
Jean was born in 1817 and died in 1889, Kew, SA.

Hugh apparently was married twice before Jean Smith. With his first wife, who is unnamed, he had Mary, born in 1834.
With his second, possibly Mary Dunlop, he had Alexander (1836), William (1837), Hugh (1837) and John, who died quite early, which leads me to believe that maybe he died with his mother in childbirth. I haven't been able to find which year he died in, though.

Hugh Howie is the earliest that I have read about. I shall look through my Poppa's family history books. I need to find his parent's names and the names of his grandparents also so that I can get a better picture of where I fit in in the Howie family.

I hope this information helps. I am always looking for more information, so if you have questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Genie Howie

Genie Howie (Perkins) was my paternal grandmother. It appears she was born in Louisiana in 1912. We know little about her except she had parents who were gypsy like, she was raised by maiden aunts; she lived primarily in Louisiana and married my Grandfather John Curtis Perkins at age 14 or 16. They lived in Sarepta, Louisiana. I do know they lived in Arkansas around 1930. She had a baby daughter at aged 16 who was named Mary, and that child was either stilllborn or died at birth. My father, James Leroy Perkins was born to them in Hamburg Ark. 10 June 1933. My father died Sept. 3, 2005; and Genie Howie Perkins Brown died about 2 weeks later. She did not know my father died. She was rather senile and demented by then, and the remaining siblings felt it was better left unsaid. She lived in an elder care home. She had 3 other living children--Wanda (Jackson Mississippi); Johnny Perkins, Louisiana; Marjorie Perkins Green.

Jean (Breckenridge)was still alive aged 80 in 1881 living with her son Michael. If her death cert gave her parents as John and her mother as Mary then it would suggest that Jean and James were using the naming pattern and his parents were William and Janet. James seems to have died before 1851.

Irene

I recently have inherited some photos mentioning the children of Ben Casey. One was taken in Sulphur Springs, Texas and may be Henry and his twin sister. These would have been two of the younger children of Maggie Howie and Ben Casey.
I have done some studying of this line because there was a Sarah Howie Jacobs who moved up to Randolph County, IL from Tennessee. She is part of my Howie family from Lauderdale County, Alabama. One of my dad's cousins had been in contact with those in the Randolph and Perry County area, but I didn't inherit her records. If I should happen to have something that you don't have, I 'll be glad to share it.

Ronnie Howie

Illegitimacy is always a possibility. Robert was an ironstone miner living at Burnfoothill, Dalmellington, when he was married in 1866. In 1861, Annie Edgar was living in Drumbowie, a servant in the household of William Merry. The birth records of the two young sons were extracted for me by professional researchers in Scotland, and there were no interesting clues as far as I know. When the sons were born, I think they were living in Kearse with the Edgar family.

I am sorry that I have been away from the computer and unable to read or respond. The fall is my best time to do research although I teach at a small college several days a week. Can I search for death certs at Scotland's people? My husband's family lived in Scotland, England and Ireland until the 1940's so I am quite certain that Dr. Alex. and Agnes Holms Howie died in Scotland. I googled William Howie and found that he had a very interesting Architectural career and worked for John Stevenson as an apprentice. ( I wonder if his mother Mary Barclay Stevenson was related remotely to him for him to have gotten that plum of an apprenticeship.. My mother in law spoke of a cousin James Stevenson and I would like to find out who that was. He gave a set of pearl handled opera glasses to his cousin, Elspeth Howie Barron's husband, Desmond Barron, who had to sell them for a dollar to get an egg while a Japanese prisoner of war.
Any ideas about the three different Howie lines?
William Howie also built many buildings in Kilbarchan where his mother's Stevenson family lived at Auchinames Farm.
His aunt lived at Larg and one of her daughter's too who married a doctor and when William retired he moved to Larg also and lived until 1939 when he died. My mother in law visited the Howies in 1939 in Ireland... I do not know if she went to Scotland as well but the Barrons (Elspeth Howie) lived in Brookhouse Somerset Shropshire at that time so she visited there as well. I have letters from Elspeth Howie who is about 8yrs old and who mentions her Uncle Willie.( Howie)
and Grannie but I don't know if she refers to Mary B. Stevenson Howie her father's mother ( or Mary Hannay Rutherford her mother's mother who was living at Castle Turin, Kilmaine Ireland) in that letter. Any hints you have , I would appreciate. I am a novice and began researching about two years ago. Merci beaucoup!

There's no obvious RH in the scottish census nor in the IGI ...so could he have been illegitimate? What was his occupation when he married in 1866, and have you looked at the births of his two sons Robert in 1868 and James in 1870 ...both in Dalrymple...just in case there is some small clue in the certs. Have you found Annie Edgar in the pre 1871 census?
Irene

I am trying to determine the origins of Robert Howie, who was born in Scotland 1844. His 1866 marriage record to Annie Edgar in Dalrymple gives his parents names as Robert Howie (a plasterer) and Margaret Donaldson (deceased). Robert and Annie moved to Pennsylvania around 1871-1875, settling in Greene County. Robert was a miner, who was blinded in an accident not too many years after he arrived in the US. I have been unable to find the Robert Howie/Margaret Donaldson in Scottish records. They were probably from Ayrshire, since that is where their son first appears, but there is no evidence one way or the other.

So have you seen the posting on 6th June? No, children's birth certs do not give birthplace of parents ..with the exception of 1855 certs. The easiest way to get the parents of Alexander Howie and Agnes Holmes is to find their death certs ...assuming Alex and Agnes died in Scotland. Failing that, search for Alexander in the records of Glasgow University ...hopefully you'll get the name of his father. Irene
