Belatedly replying to your thread as you mentioned a connection to the Giggleswick Howsons. Wishing I had gone to that reunion!

Have you any info on the ancestors of Rev. John Howson (1787-1859) of Giggleswick? I'm looking specifically for info on John Howson "the Younger" (b.1727 ish) or his father William Howson of Hawksheath?(b. 1695?), but anything would be appreciated.

Thank you for your consideration.

Am belatedly beginning research on the Giggleswick Howsons.

Thank you for the info on Rev. John Howson's father Thomas (cordwainer, b.1765). I would like to confirm what little I [may] have on their ancestors, but am a novice at this and would prefer some historical verification, but will accept any hints or clues available. Can you confirm or contest what I hope is a reconstruction of that line?

Thomas Howson, cordwainer(father to John Howson):b. 1765 in Lancashire,m. 29 May 1786,d.1830 (Elizabeth Hathersall his wife?)

father to above Thomas:
John b.6 Apr 1727, d. 28 May 1796??

father to above John:
William of Hawksheath?

father to above William:
Thomas who married Anne Wilcocke in 1695

You mentioned Capstick - do you know where this family fits in?

Genealogical research can be both frustrating and rewarding - thank you for any nuggets you choose to contribute.

I don't think I can help you with any information. My great-grandmother was Sarah Howson Frost. Her parents were Gilbert Fox Howson and Mary Cunningham. Like you, I too am having difficulty getting any further than that. I know through family conversation that Gilbert was from England and MAry was from Ireland...but no cold hard facts or dates to support that and you know how family information passed back and forth changes. Sorry I couldn't be any help but if I come across any Howson info that might help you I'll send it along. Thanks for writing.

You indicated that your Howsons had a daughter, Sarah. ancestors married a Sarah Howson, I was wondering if those Howsons may have had another Sarah in their descendancy who may have been born abt. 1855 in England? If they did, do you have information on descendancy, etc.? Also does your information indicate that the family may have immigrated to US. If so, where?

In a death certificate for my grandfather, his mother is listed as Sarah (what appears to be HOWSON - the 3rd letter is a bit difficult to read) & father as Charles CLINE. In checking backward, I located an 1880 census with Charles & Sarah (both aged 25, which would place her birth year at about 1855)that indicated she was born in England. In an 1885 census, there were more children (2 of which are related to me, but my grandfather was born 2 years later, so he's not on it). Again, it indicates Sarah was born in England. Charles was born in NY. The 1880 census was for Sac County, Clinton Township, Iowa. I believe the 1885 census was for Nebraska.

Am having trouble going back beyond 1880 to locate her. Does your information fall into line with this? Thanks!
A death certificate issued in the Coles District of Prince William County, Virginia, USA, shows that Leucretia [sic] Howson Barnes of Woodbridge was a white female, the widow of Thomas BARNES. She was born on 4 November 1843 and died at the age of 87 years, 4 months, and 16 days. She was born in Minnieville [Prince William County], as were her parents, Stephen HOWSON and Martha KEYES. The informant was Richard H. BARNES of Woodbridge. She died on 30 March 1931 of cerebral hemorrhage, with "old age" a secondary cause of death. She was buried in the home cemetery near Minnieville on 1 April 1931 (certificate 1125-8007).

I would appreciate any information about Leucretia's mother, Minnie (Keyes) Howson.
Note you are originally from Bolton in Lancashire, and I was hoping you may know something about this crime. I am researching the family of Brindle for a friend. Evan Brindle arrived in the colony in 1836. He was tried at Lancaster Castle in the March Assizes in 1836, with Thomas Rushton and Rowland Heald for the murder of one Robert Howson at Whalley in Lancashire. They were sentenced to death, however this was commuted to Life in the Colony of Port Jackson.

I have found that Evan Brindle, Thomas Rushton were born in Bolton, and I have found a Rowland Heald born Chorley.

Would not know anything about this crime in your family history? I you maybe able to shed some light of this crime.

Regards,
Janice
Belrose - Sydney

I am looking for information regarding a Robert Howson of Whalley in Lancashire, he was murdered in the years 1835/1836 by Evan Brindle, Thomas Rushton and Rowland Heald. These men were found guilty at the March Assizes 1836 at Lancaster Castle, sentenced to death, commuted to transportation for Life to Port Jackson, N.S.W. Australia.

I am able to find that Evan Brindle and Thomas Rushton arrived in the Colony, but not Rowland Heald.

Maybe, Robert Howson who was murdered was the father of your Robert Howson?

Regards,
Janice

I just saw your postings and want to compare notes. I just came back from a family gathering at Giggleswick School where I met 77 people who would be interested in your Howson ancestors. I visited the village church, St Alkelda's, where there is a stone for my ancestors John Howson and his wife Margaret (maiden name Saul). But there were 2 other Howson stones there whose names did not easily place in our tree.
My last Giggleswick ancestor was Henry Howson, b 1822 who attended Giggleswick School where his father John (1787-1859) was a master. John’s father, Thomas Howson (1765-1830) was a cordwainer chistened and married in Clapham. Thomas's father was named John and christened in 1727 in Clapham.
Earlier family names are Capstick and Hathersall, but everyone I am in contact with is descended from John Howson born 1787.
Hope to hear from you.

William Howson 1815 Ingleton

I am tracing back my family tree but I am stuck with William Howson born in Igleton in around 1815. He was a timber merchant and all his sons followed the trade, till my grandfather born in 1892. The family moved a lot around Westmorland according to the various censuses I looked at. It is a family tradition to call the elder son John, and he would call his elder son William, and so on (still going on in the family). There is a family tradition that till the end of the '700 the Howsons were Quakers that could explain the difficulty I have in finding documents. Any help?

I am trying to find out about the move that was made to Anticosti Island in about 1871 by quite a few families. Did Joseph and Mary go with them? Did they leave afterwards and go to the U.S?
Hi Janice,
I know this is quite a long shot, but I saw your message about an Evan Brindle being sent to Australia in 1838/37, and wondered if you had any more info on him, such has what town he was from etc. My family descends from an Evan Brindle and Ellen Moulding from Oswaldtwistle/Church area of Lancashire, near Whalley. On the 1841 census I have found Ellen and her children but no husband is listed. I know her husband was Evan Brindle, and I have not been able to find him. His wife Ellen had another son William in 1844 and no father was listed for this child (her other children have Evan Brindle listed as the father). The long shot is....could her husband Evan be the one sent to Australia?? The dates and age of Evan fits. But then of course, he could have just died.
What other info do you have on that murder??

Thanks,
Pat
