I am sorry I did not reply - I have only just seen your message. James Hoy is also a family name and Hoy was often spelt as Hoey on records. I did find out from one article that many of the village (Ballymacarrick) went to SC. Hope this helps. I think the fact that they were protestant also goes with the family name. The early records go back as far a Pict times in N. Ireland and W. lowland of Scotland ( Kingdom of Dalriada).

Her daughters were Edyth, and Mildred (my grandmother) and her sons were Frank, Charles and Ralph. I too am looking for information about her. She passed away in September 1958.

John Booker Hoy, brother of William Hoy of "Hoy's Station" in KY

John Booker Hoy sold some land in January 1787 in Campbell Co., VA that he co-owned with another couple. That deed showed that the land was next to some land that was owned by David Mosby Davidson. David Mosby Davidson, as well as his parents Edward Davidson, Senior and Agnes Mosby, had left Buckingham Co., VA around 1780 or so, and they moved to the part of Bedford Co., VA that became Campbell Co., VA in 1782. The above Edward Davidson, Senior had another son who was named Edward Davidson, Junior, and Edward "Junior" had been an overseer for William Hoy in Buckingham Co., VA, per the 1773 Buckingham Co., VA tithe list.

It is now known that Edward Davidson, Junior was later in Anson Co., NC with William Hoy, and Edward "Junior" was a Lt. who served in the militia under: a) Captain William Hoy, b) Major George Davison (who was from an unrelated Davison family that was out of Prince Edward Co., VA) and c) Colonel Love. There was a later man in Anson Co., NC (and later still in Montgomery Co., NC) who was named William Hoy Davidson, and I strongly suspect that he was a son Edward Davidson, Junior.

It appears that all of the daughters of William Hoy have been "accounted for." Does anyone know, however, the names of the daughters of John Booker Hoy....and could one of them perphaps have married Edward Davidson, Junior (probably back in Buckingham Co., VA while Edward Davidson, Junior was working for William Hoy there)? One of John Booker Hoy's apparent three wives was a "Mosby widow"....and since Edward Davidson, Senior had married an Agnes Mosby, that would seem to also "connect" John Booker Hoy to the family of Edward Davidson, Senior. Comments/questions on any of the above? Thanks!

Thanks so much! David Mosby Davidson was a son of Edward Davidson, Senior and Agnes Mosby, and David Mosby Davidson was an apparent brother of the the younger Edward Davidson "Junior" who died in Anson Co., NC around 1777.

By the way, it now seems almost certain that the George Davison (who was a Major in the Rev. War who served under Colonel Love) who tended to the Anson Co., NC estate of the younger Edward Davidson (who was a Lt. who served under Captain William Hoy, Major George Davison and Colonel Love) was a member of the unrelated Davison family that came into Prince Edward Co., VA by at least 1743. Major George Davison (sometimes shown as "Davidson") was a member of DNA "Family 5," while Lt. Edward Davidson "Junior" was a member of DNA "Family 10" out of Buckingham Co., VA (at www.davidsongenes.org). John Booker Hoy was a brother of the above Captain William Hoy, and Edward Davidson "Junior" had been an overseer for William Hoy (per the 1773 Buckingham Co., VA tithe list).

I don't know if this is helpful but I ran across this deed -

Campbell Co. VA deeds, 1784-1790
Deed Bk 2, p. 440, Jan. 21, 1787 from John Welch (son and heir of John Welch decd) and Chloe, his wife, John Booker Hoy and Mary, his wife, of the Rowan County, North Carolina, to Anthony Haden of C, for 140 lbs, one certain tract of land of about 432 acres on the N side of Seneca Cr (400 of which were patented by John Welch decd & patented to the said John Welch on Jul. 20, 1780, lying in C, bounded by his own corner on the Creek, Rodgers Branch (being also David Terrell's line), Phelps old road, John Mitchell, David Mosby Davison). The other 32 acres was deed by gift by Samuel Gilbert decd to his dau., Mary Welch, and is bounded by the above mentioned land, Rogers' Br, David Terrell, Phelps Rd & Seneca Cr, it being the place & plantation where John Welch lived and died. Signed-John Welch, Chloe (X her mark) Welch, John B. Hoy, Mary Hoy. Wit-Saml Welch, EDWARD BURTON, Isham Welch, James Welch & Isham Welch [Quaker].
Calvin Crockett Hoy/e in Virginia/WV

Thanks to the help of Russell Bennett, a footstone recognizing Calvin Hoye's service during the Civil War has been placed on Calvin's grave this year. In going back over the available information on Calvin, it shows that his parents are J. Hoye and E.(Elizabeth). Looking at the children of Creed T. Hoy b 1836, I see several names of children that are similar to names in Calvin's family and wonder if Creed and Samuel could be brothers. Creed T. Hoy's father is Samuel J. Hoy b 1814 and the grandparents are Thomas Hoy b 1788 and Jane Taylor/Priscilla Gallasy(Gallaspy). I have not found any records of other sons born to Samuel J. but wonder if anybody else has looked at this possibility. Please contact me at kinserg @ frontiernet.net if you have any information. Thanks, Glenn

Hi

It may be difficult to get anything on a divorce. There could be something in the law courts but it would all be with the individual solicitors. Solicitors records are sometime donated to their closest Public Record Office. I will try and find out for you if Robert is still alive. Ask at your local library if on their computers they have signed up for the "Library Addition of Ancestry". I work in the Local Studies Department of my local library and we have it in our libraries. We also have all the local newspapers which includes the Larne Times, this was where I found the death notices. If you want to supply me with a postal address I will gladly post these to you.

Glad to be of any help that I can.

Elizabeth

Hi

Apologies for being so long in getting back to you. May I please ask what part of the world you are in? I found this information on the Seattle Passenger and Crew List 1882-1957 on a library edition of Ancestry. William married in the latter part of 1959 in the Wirral in Liverpool to the lady Hughes and died aged 38. Yes he did have a brother Robert as he is mentioned in the list of death notices. The R.A.O.B (Buffaloes) are tendering their sympathy to Robert on the death of his brother, but William even though he was in England was also a member. The lodge number is Knowe Lodge 6107. Do you know where his first marriage took place, was it in Northern Ireland on England? It might be easier to get details of a divorce in England than here in Northern Ireland. Both his father and mother were still alive at the time of William's death.

Please keep in touch. Hope this answers some of your questions although I have asked some more!!!

Regards,

Elizabeth

Hi Sharon

I found this information on a library edition of ancestry.com which people in libraries can avail off free of charge. The information is handwritten at the side of his name in the margin where all the crew were listed. William Guy Craig Hoy died suddenly on 30th January 1964 at Bebington, Cheshire, England son of Robert and Bella Hoy, 4 Fleet Street, Larne Harbour this is taken from the Larne Times of 6th February 1964. He was a member of the Ropyal Antedeluvian Order of Buffaloes, which was primarily a social club. His brother Robert was also a member of this club. R.A.O.B. Knowe Lodge 6107.

Hope all this is of some help. Don't hesitate to write back if I can answer anthing else. Will have a think about the divorce bit!!!

Hi John

Been doing a little bit of homework on this gentleman. William Guy Craig Hoy born in 1925 was in the Merchant Navy. He is listed as being on the Ship British Rapana going to New York from Liverpool in 1945 and he is aged 20 and at that time is 5th engineer. He can then be traced in 1948 on the ship Port Chalmers going to New York from the port of Falmouth and at that stage he is listed as a 6th engineer. In 1949 he is on the ship Port Chalmers to New York from the port of Antwerp. At this stage he is a 5th engineer. In 1951 he is on the ship M.V. Cape Rodney sailing from Vancouver, British Columbia arriving at Seattle, Washington. (There is a note on the record here stating that he was “Not on ship, did not leave Vancouver B.C.) In 1954 he is chief engineer on the ship M.V. Argobeam sailing via Panama C.Z. arriving at Wilmingtron, North Carolina. He was 5’10” tall and weighed 150 lbs.

I don't have anyone of this name on my family tree but no doubt there is a connection somewhere!!!

Regards,

Elizabeth Hoy

Hi Sharon

Firstly I am going to list all the Robert Hoy’s that are in my family tree dating from 1791.

Robert Hoy, born 1791 in Greenhill near Slemish outside Broughshane County Antrim. His son Robert born in 1837 in Greenhill, he had a son Robert born 3rd March 1869 in Craigs, Cullybackey County Antrim and died on 26th April 1922 in Delray, Wayne County, Michigan. He had a son Robert Albert Hoy born 23rd June 1906 in Detroit.
According to the Belfast and Ulster Directory there is a John Hoy living at 92 Bank Road in Larne. In 1951 he is on the shipM.V.

I know that it is Robert Hoy that you are more interested in but this is some information which I hope may be of some interest.

William died in the early part of 1964 and although he lived in England I will take a look in one of the local papers of that time for any death notice that might have been inserted and will be in touch.

If I can help to answer anything for you please do not hestitate to get in touch.

Regards,

Elizabeth Hoy

Just found your post from 2009 Sir james Hoy was also my great grandfather

I know a few things from my mother

I believe the family were quite well off and lived in the then posh Moss Side until they lost their money at the time of the 1st world war, this would have been my granddad James son I believe he had a cotton warehouse on Whitworth Street in Manchester which was destroyed by fire

Grandfather ended up living in a corporation house in Chorlton Cum Hardy

I know Sir James was I big educationist and there was a picture of him hanging in one of the city centre collages, I do have a newspaper clipping showing him at the controls of the 1st electric tram on Deansgate declaring open when he was Mayor I believe he also opened Heaton Park

Mother also said there was some distant family connection with the Old Man Of Hoy but she was not sure what

Regards

Phil

I am looking about Margaret Jane HOY (my 2nd Great Grandmother).

She was born in ~1860 in Belfast, Antrim, Northern Island. Married James HAMILTON in 1882. Left Ireland and arrived in Australia in 1889 on board the “Quetta”. My Great Grandfather was born in Rockhampton, Australia on 22 Aug 1892. Prior to this Margaret Jane HOY had two other children: Sarah Jane (~1885) and William James (~1889).

Any information about her parents or further down the family tree would be great (I am currently at a dead end with Margaret)
Hi Steve,

Here is an e-mail address for Bob Hoye - he is a distant cousin of yours and my husband - he has all the information on Noah.

bhoye@columbus.rr.com

Here is what Bob gave us about our lineage:

>Information from Death Certificate:
>
>William Hoy - Born December 31, 1864 - Logan Co, Oh
>Died - November 10, 1925 - Guernsey County, Ohio
>Cause of Death - Suicide by Hanging
>Spouse - Elizabeth Hoy
>Parents - Noah Hoy and Elizabeth Towle
>Occupation - Coal Miner
>Place of Burial - Pleasant City - 11/13/1925
>Informant - Harry Hoy, Pleasant City, Ohio
>Certificate # - 63272

We are decendants of Noah's sone Willaim - who died tragically and to this day our Grandpa Harry can barely speak of it. William had a son named Harrison and he is our great grandfather.

Here is the exact lineage as it goes for us:

Noah Hoy marries Elizabeth Ellen Hoy(e)(nee Towle)
- son William Hoy marries Elizabeth
---son Harry married Ada Mae Hoy (nee Cooper)
----son Harry G. Hoy married Helen Ruth Hoy (nee Boring)
-----son James G. Hoy married Linda V. Hoy (nee Forsyth)- 2nd marriage for Jim
------son Darrin J. Hoy married Sonia Hoy (nee Campoli)

Noah was from New Straitsville, OH and his grave can be found there - he particpated in the Civil War (North - Union Army) - Darrin's family remained mainly in Ohio - the majority of them are in the Canton/Massillon area of Ohio. I hope some of this helps. Darrin and I live in Toronto, Ontario (Canada).

Cheers,
Sonia
There were also some Hoys in Manitoba in Canada as well. Maybe give those areas a try. As you know this is many years ago so not sure if they still live in the areas. Local libraries often have old telephone directories that list where Hoys lived. Take care

Re: Charles Hoy

Yes, this message is old - 8 years and 1 day! I believe I have been in contact with one (or several?) of your closer cousins in the past couple of years. I'll have to look; I know at least they were descended from the Frank L. Hoy and Mary R. Kelker line. I descend from the line of Frank's brother, Fred Hoy. I believe you and I are "3rd cousins once removed", or rather, if I have this right, I am your father's 3rd cousin.

William Francis, Robert James, and Charles Bishop Hoy were all born in Fort Wayne, Allen county, Indiana. Their parents were Harold Francis Hoy and Florence Belle Bishop, married 24 November 1910 in Fort Wayne. The family moved to Chicago some time between the 1920 and 1930 census. I think perhaps Harold's uncle, Egbert B. Hoy, may have had some influence on Harold's career. Egbert was the publisher of "American Boxmaker Magazine", a trade publication for the cardboard box industry. Harold worked as a foreman for a cardboard box company prior to his move to Chicago. In Chicago, he was employed as the advertising agent for "Snips", a sheet metal trade publication that is still being published today. He retired from that in 1965, the year before he died.

Now, I have a question regarding Harold, and maybe you know someone who might be able to answer it. Harold died on 26 September 1966, but I don't know where. He does not have a death certificate on file in Cook county. Social Security records only list that his last address was Chicago. Perhaps sometime I can find his obituary, and perhaps it will tell where if no one in the family can remember.

Here are a couple of links that you can follow. The first is to my posted GEDCOM for the Hoy family (my mother's family). It's a bit dated, as I haven't updated it since 2005. I know of a few errors and omissions within it. There are also some family trees posted by other cousins, some of which aren't entirely accurate. There was also one individual who copied my work into their own database, but stripped all of my notes and didn't list me as a source; I spent years collecting the information, and spent hundreds to get, including hiring private researchers in Michigan. I don't mind if you copy it, but I'd like to be listed as a source, so that everyone can share in corrections and updates. This link will start you off at George W. Hoy. From there, click on his son Frank, then Frank's son Harold, which will bring you to William, Robert, and Charles. Note that Charles was still living when I posted this; I wish I could have tracked him or his children down while he was still living.

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

You can also follow the family on the Find A Grave website. I've got most of my memorials to the family linked in some manner. Where there are other memorials, I have written to their submitter, and asked that they be linked to other family members as appropriate. There are still a lot of gaps there, but some of the information that I have posted on there is more recent than what I posted back in 2005 with the GEDCOM file. I'll list several here, since they aren't all linked yet:

George Hoy -
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=22...

Harold Francis Hoy -
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=37...

Florence Belle Bishop Hoy -
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=37...

Some of the information that has not been updated in my family tree file concerns Charles H. Hoy and his first wife, Mary Ann Banks. I found their marriage record from Connecticut, dated exactly one year to the day before the birth of George W. Hoy in 1823. I've not been able to prove the connection to the Banks family, though - there were several Mary Ann Banks of approximately the same age in the same area, who were probably all close cousins. I think Charles' father was William Hoy, who possibly lived in nearby New York. There was an early Hoy family in New York, with ties to Scotland and the Presbyterian church, which seems to match the background of George Hoy and family (his son Frank was the exception, converting to Catholic with his marriage to Mary Kelker). Another Hoy cousin also believes this to be the case. He once wrote that my grandfather Hoy, who died when I was less than 2 months old, was an "expert" on the Hoy family history, back to when they came to this country. He planned to interview my grandfather as to what he knew of the family, but he died suddenly of a stroke.

Anyway, there's some information to get you started. As always, any correction or additions would be appreciated. Please feel free to write directly. I have a few old family photos that have been shared with me, and copies of some documents, etc.

Hoys in Wyoming County, NY area

Hello, I'm researching my ancestor, Ennis DeForest Barnes (born about 1839)

The 1860 federal census showed him living in Wethersfield, Wyoming County, NY, with:

Thomas Hoy (b about 1812)
Magdalena Hoy (b about 1801)
Delos Hoy (b about 1838)
Martha Hoy (b about 1842)
Lucy J Barnes (b about 1839) whom we assume was Ennis' wife and that her maiden name was Hoy.

Any information you may have on any of these would be much appreciated!!!

Major William Hoy, Spartanburg Co., SC

I’m trying to locate the parents/lineage of Major William Hoy. He was born 11/10/1810 in South Carolina and died 2/12/1904 in Spartanburg Co., SC and was buried in Nazareth Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Moore, Spartanburg Co., SC. The Federal Census of Spartanburg Co., SC of 1850, -60, -70, -80, and 1900 proves his wives and children (and his father was from Ireland and his mother from South Carolina): (1) Margaret Ann Berry, no confirmed children. (2) Frances C. Dean, children: Alfred P. Hoy, and Frances Ursula (Hoy) Brockman. (3) Margaret E. Hadden married April 7, 1864 in DeKalb Co., GA. Children: Barbara A. Hoy (unmarried), Annie Hoy (unconfirmed facts), and John Robert Hoy (unmarried). (4) Elmina Louisa Poole, no confirmed children. The children’s mothers were confirmed by their death certificates. Could not confirm when and where the assigned title “Major” was given to William.

Located in the Spartanburg County, SC GenWeb at http://www.spartasc.com/obith.htm the obits for Captain Patrick Hoy, “The Carolina Spartan, 1860” and W.P. Hoy, “Spartanburg Herald, November 25, 1910. No mention of Major William Hoy.

Read in “The Genealogy of the Benson-Latimer-Reed-Durham and Associated Families” by Mary Benson Maxwell, pub in 1932 that the older members of the Hoy family knew Major William Hoy as “cousin” and who visited them often. They were not exactly certain of the exact relationship, but are almost sure he is a son of a brother of the gunsmith - Patrick Hoy. It also stated that Major William Hoy gave opinions and wrote for the Spartanburg, “Spartan”, one article of which was a sketch of Patrick Hoy in 1898. (I’ve been unable to locate this article.) However, this book had several errors in its lineage/relationships pages.

I do not believe that this Major William was a son of the gunsmith – Patrick Hoy, as some persons have indicated. My belief comes from Patrick naming a son, William Pinkney/Pinckney Hoy in 1829 (The family is in the 1850 Federal Census for Spartanburg Co., SC with “Pinkney” listed.)

In the "History of Spartanburg County”, by Dr. J. R. O. Landrum, pub 1900, Atlanta, GA, page 52, [previous text was referring to the school that taught Latin, Greek, mathematics, and English studies in (Sulphur Springs/Powder Springs/Green Springs and lastly known as Cedar Springs],….. "We can only go back to 1816, for in that year, Maj. Wm. Hoy and the late Capt. David Anderson went there in their sixth year." However, the Piedmont Historical Society wrote - regarding Early Spartanburg County Schools at http://www.piedmont-historical-society.org/sptbgschools.html... that the school he attended was Poplar Springs Academy.

"History of Spartanburg County," by Dr. J. B. O. Landrum, pub 1900, page 335 states that Frances C. died of smallpox, leaving 3 children. (Major William’s second wife.) She is the only wife that I couldn’t locate the burial information of and I only have two children assigned to her.

In “A History of Spartanburg County” compiled by the Spartanburg Unit of the Writer’s Program of the Work Projects Administration in the State of South Carolina, American Guide Series, pub 1940: Band & White, were several mentions of Major William Hoy’s opinions and thoughts but nothing that could be related to his family.

Numerous members of the family were buried in Nazareth Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Moore, Spartanburg Co., SC. Including the gunsmith – Patrick and his wife Elizabeth (Coan) Hoy. However, William Pinkney/Pinckney is buried in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery, Moore, Spartanburg Co., SC.

Any and all help and even insight would be greatly appreciated.

Vicki S.
Charles was my grandfather. Born in 1886, he was 9. Thomas was his brother. Charles moved out to Spokane Washington in 1933 from Texas. I never met Tom, although I do remember hearing grampa talking about him.
I have done a little research into the family. John's fathers name was Michael Hoy, or from what I can find, Michaeleen. I do not have Johns mothers name yet.
I will dig around. I think I have some of the relatives names somewhere in my research. I will forward it when I find it.
Nice to meet you cuz...
michaeleenhoy@aol.com

Patrick Hoy 1803-1869

Hoping to find Irish roots of my ancestor, Patrick Hoy (may have been Haughey)
born in Ireland in 1803. He emigrated before 1839 to NY. Listed in Pittstown as Patr Hay in 1850 with large family. Moved to Palos, Illinois around 1855-56. (married twice) 2nd wife, Elizabeth Galligher (Doherty) and on 1860 Palos census as Patrick Hay with more children. Moved to Waterloo, Iowa in 1865 where he died in 1869. Buried in Calvary Cemetery in Waterloo, Iowa. I have found one immigration record that may be for this family in 1846, ship, Brothers. Under the name of Haughey of Newry, Ireland. Anyone else out there looking at this family line?
