This sounds like Matilda is the daughter of James Hoey, the sister of Thomas and Mary(Thomas is the 17 year old). They are in the 1871 census in Manchester. James Hoey, son of William and Margaret married Mary Anne Adams. They apparently had all 3 children in Dublin although the first two are before civil registration. I have the birth for Thomas who is my friends great grandfather in 1865. Matilda was born around 1860 and Mary about 1861.

Hello Melanie,
I believe we are distant cousins- 4th cousins. Welcome to our Hoye family of cousins in America. Our Hoyes can be found from Canada to California and still in Omaha Nebraska.

We understand the Hoyes were bricklayers in London. Are you able to identify who they worked for or their specific work in London? Can we imagine that they did brick masonry for Royalty?

The Hoye families lived on Vauxhall Bridge Road. We would love to have some historical info on this Road as well as a foto. Of course it has changed a lot with new businesses now present.
Hello Melanie from Paula,

We are a group of cousins in the US related to your ancestor Richard/1853.

Richard's/1853 brother John Hoye born 1836 married Sarah Amelia Birch in England and they came to Omaha Nebraska.

We have used the England census and church records to find our Hoye family roots in England back to the 1700's.

Richard and John Hoye's parents are Richard Hoye/1806 and Elizabeth Sharpe. They married in 1835 St Paul, Covent Garden. He was a horse dealer and they came to London about 1851-1853.

We would love to exchange info with you.
Hello Melanie,
Our ancestor John Hoye was a bricklayer as were his sons Charles, Fred and Richard.
There seems to be a 15 year difference between the two brothers John/1836 and Richard/1853.
John and Sarah immigrated to Omaha Nebraska around 1870.
The last child born in England was in 1869. They had at least 13 children born in England and Omaha.
My husband is related to John's son Richard born 1871.
We learned that the oldest son of John/1836, also named John/1857, stayed behind in London.
You have many cousins in Omaha, California and Canada.
Please contact me at MillerMF@aol.com.
Paula

I am looking for information on a Florence Hoye (father Fred and mother Minnie) who married Stanley Tozer. Stanley is my mysterious great grandfather. He is shown married to Florence in the 1930 census for Omaha, Nebraska. In the 1920 census he is in Minnesota married to my great grandmother. Do any the Hoye family member listed fit into your work.

Cathy

Do you have any family stories about Calvin being Native American. In my wife's family, they thought that he was full blooded Shawnee and that was why everybody was a little dark skinned. Please contact me if you would like to find out more, kinserg@frontiernet.net Glenn

I found a little more information on Calvin Crockett Hoy(e) that I thought you might be interested in seeing. I also re-thought something that may help us locate his parents! In the 1870 census, he has a sister Martha living with his family. If we can find Martha in either the 1850 or 1860 census living at home with her parents, then we might have discovered Calvin's parents. Martha is 29 in the 1870 census, so would have been born around 1841(1840-42). Please let me know if you find anything.
Here is the information from his records that is available at the sources mentioned.
Glenn

In Calvin Hoy’s Civil War papers available from the National Archives or on footnote.com, it shows that he enlisted April 16, 1862 at Newbern under Capt. W.J. Jordan for three years and received a bounty of $50.00. He was a private in Co. F 54th Regiment Virginia Infantry. He appears on the Muster Roll July 9-Oct 31 1863 and indicates that he was sick and in the hospital from 1 Oct 1863. On Nov 11, 1863 he received a clothing allowance of “2 shorts and 2 pr drawers”. He was in Buckner Hosp ital in Newnan, GA and was employed there as a nurse during Nov and Dec 1863. He was apparently employed by a surgeon, William McAllister during October 15-31, 1863 and that he is due leave of 61 days for extra duty. In addition to his name being listed as Calvin C. Hoy, which is how he signed it in the document, he is also listed as C.C. Hay. His records also show that he was present at the following times: Jan & Feb 1864, July & Aug 1864, and Jan & Feb 1865.

She is the daughter of Nora and Robert Hatcher and descended from Nancy Jane Hoye and John William Smith. I have tracked the family back a generation or two more.
I am trying to locate a Thomas Tiller Hoye. I believe that he was a USNR veteran in 1942. I have found where a Thomas Tiller Hoye was buried in Culpeper National Cemetery in Culpeper Co. Virginia. Not certain that is correct person.
The date of birth and death I have from the cemetery record is 12/28/1920-12/19/1993. However the information I have does not have DOB or DOD, rather it has USNR and 1942 on it. My family lived in Richmond, VA in the 70's, however we are not Hoye's. Please contact me here if this information with the possible WWII vet, Thomas Tiller Hoye is someone you might have known or know? thanks, Rebeccah

I realize that there are likely several origins for parti
cular surnames, but had not seen this possible origin: HOYMAN - one who carries goods and passengers by water (Hoy - small coastal vessel or sloop)
There is a marriage for Calvin C.(s/o Elizabeth Hoy) to Mary Wallace (d/o Christopher & Nancy Wallace) (p.b .Notoway,Va.) 30 Oct.1856 Pulaski Marriage. This from " Marriages in the New River Valley, Va". by Theresa Fisher. There is also an 1850 census that has Calvin living in the home of John Clark and Eliza(?Elizabeth??). This very likely could be his mother remarried to John Clark in my opinion, but am trying to check it out. Glenn
In the 1850, Pulaski Co., VA census, page 71 48th District there is a William Hoye 63 $15,000 born VA and Margaret 55. Also a John M. Hoye 31 $12,000, Mary 25, Nancy 2, Elizabeth 68(mother?) and Nancy R. 38 $5000.
There is a Samuel J. Hoy 36 on page 11 Franklin Co., VA, Ruth 38, Creed J. 14, Solomon 13, Sarah J. 10, Samuel H. 9, James M. 8, Elizabeth 6, Charity 5, Stephen W. 4 and Mildred M. 2. These parents are old enough to have had a son Calvin who would be 15 or 16 and could be working for someone else, in part because of the size of the family. This family is living very close to the Robert Smith listing, also on page 11 tying some of these families together, even if loosely. I am suggesting that these are the likely parents of Calvin Hoye because of the names of their children(particularly Creed), the ages of the parents and their other children, the presence in Franklin County, and the fact that they lived among other families who made their way to Raleigh County, VA. Thoughts??? Glenn
Sharon, Here is what I have recently added to the Hoye informaiton that I have. I also have some "begats that trace the other children, but this is from my wife's direct line. In particular, I think that William Hoye and Samuel Hoye may be the grandfather and father respectively of Calvin, but would welcome your thoughts. Thanks, Glenn

Sharon, I would appreciate any thoughts that you may have
on this. Another suggests Jacob Hoye and Elizabeth Faust.

Generation 2

Calvin Crocket Hoye is listed as being born 28 Aug 1834 in Pulaski County, Virginia. In actuality, Newbern, the town where he was born was settled in 1810, but Pulaski County was not formed until 1839 from parts of Montgomery and Wythe Counties.

In the 1850 Census Calvin Hoye 15 is listed living with the family of John Clark 37 and his wife Eliza 33 and their children. There is a mark in the occupation column which I am unable to interpret, which might provide useful information.

Calvin Hoye married Mary Elizabeth Wallace born 26 November 1838 in Snowville, Virginia on 30 October 1856 in Pulaski County. (There is a great deal of information on the Wallace ancestors. Family names include Wallace, Rash, Mason, Wilson, Muncy and Coleman.) In the 1860 census Calvin C. Hoy 25 is a farmer born in Va with personal property worth $175 and is living in the Western District, Newbern, Pulaski Co., VA. Living with him are his wife Mary E. (Wallace) 22 also born VA, daughter Nancy I. 2 born VA, and Gordon Bowden 21 Laborer born VA. Living not far from the Hoyes are CHRISTOPHER Wallace 74, Farmer born VA, Martha A. Wallace 19, Saml. I. Wallace 16 and Isabella Wallace 15. Later in 1860 Calvin and Mary Elizabeth Hoye would have their second child Rhoda. Their additional children came after the Civil War. A C.C. Hoy is listed in Company F 54th Virginia Regiment.

Miles Coleman Hoye was born 10 February 1866 in Pulaski County, VA, Elizabeth Octavia Hoye 26 May 1868, John Neff Hoye 20 Jan 1873 in Raleigh County, WV, Joseph Austin Hoy 25 September 1875, Samuel Hoye 10 Mar 1876, and Laura Mary Hoye born 13 April 1878 in Raleigh County, WV.

C.C. Hoye is listed as living in Shady Spring Township, Raleigh County, WV in the 1870 census meaning that the family must have moved to WV between 1866 and 1870. The family consisted of: C.C. Hoy 35 M W Farming - $160 born VA

Mary E. 31 F W VA

Nancy 12 F W VA

Rhoda C. 9 F W WV

Miles C. 7 M W “

Eliza O. 2 F W “

Samuel J. 4/12 M W “

Martha 29 F W VA

This information leads me to believe that Martha is Calvin Hoye’s younger sister based on the supposed siblings of Calvin at the top of the page.

I have not been able to find the family on the 1880 or 1890 census. Calvin died 28 Jul 1893 in Raleigh, West Virginia and is buried in the Williams Cemetery in White Oak and Mary Elizabeth Wallace Hoye died 20 April 1896 in Raleigh Co.

Calvin Hoye and wife Mary had 8 children. Nancy Jane married John William Smith(my line); Rhoda Hoye married Layfayette Meador; Miles Coleman Hoye married Naomi Bird, Elizabeth Octavia Hoye married William Anderson Dodd; John Neff Hoye married Mary Virginia Watts; and Laura Mary Hoye married Milo Ulysses Grant Phillips. I have no evidence that Joseph and Samuel Hoye married, although one researcher suggests that Joseph married Olive unknown and lived in the Imperial Valley in California.

Generation 3

Nancy Jane Hoye was born 19 December 1857 in Pulaski County, VA. John William Smith was born 24 November 1853 in Floyd County, Virginia. They married 17 February 1876 in Pluto, Raleigh Co., WV and had seven children:

Rose Laura SMITH b: 1891(my line)

Sam SMITH

Grace SMITH

Maude SMITH

Earnest SMITH

Joseph SMITH

Mary SMITH

John William Smith was the son of Robert Smith and Martha Hall. John died 28 December 1923 and is buried in Blue Jay, Raleigh Co., WV. Nancy Hoye Smith died 25 January 1936 and is buried in Blue Jay.

Miles Hoy is found in the 1900 census for Shady Springs township, Raleigh County, WV listed as a Boarder 32 born May 1868 in WV, married, both parents born VA and is employed as a bookkeeper.

Sam Hoy is also listed in the 1900 census as a Boarder 30 born March 1870 in WV, single, both parents born VA and is employed as a Lumber Inspector.

John N. Hoye is listed in Richmond District, Raleigh County in the 1900 census with wife Mary V.(Watts). It shows that he is 27, born January 1873 in WV, married, both parents born VA, is a Farmer and owns it free. His wife is 21 born January 1879 in WV and her parents born WV. Both can read and write and speak English. In 1910, he is listed as J.N. Hoye 37 and a Farmer. Mary V. is 31, married for 10 years and had 5 children with five children living. Their children are listed as Fern? F 9 9/12, Mason M 8 1/12, Gencon? F 6 9/12, Golden M 5 11/12, and Samuel M 3 8/12. In 1920 he is listed as John Hoy 46 Farmer with he and his parents born WV who owns his property. Mary is 41 and the children are Golden 15 Laborer, James? 13, and Dewey 6. John Hoye used to visit my father Robert Hatcher and my uncle Stephen Tolliver when I was a child. He was always in a suit and was a tall, dark complexioned man who was imposing because of his height and carriage. He gave me a dollar to buy my first photo album, which I still have, and I took a picture of him and placed it in the album. I was between 12 and 14 years old. I also remember him as being a very kind person. Family stories indicated that the Hoyes had Indian heritage. They had high cheekbones, dark skin and black hair even into their 60’s.

Generation 4

Rosa Laura Smith
I've recently found that my Thomas Patrick Hoye was a son of Patrick Hoye from Ireland: the family was based from abt 1881 in Wood River, Hall Co. Nebraska. My Patrick said (in the 1920 census) that he immigrated aged 20 in 1869 - slightly different from yours, but close enough, I hope. He married in PA where his first 2 sons were born, then moved to Nebraska.

Thomas Patrick married Fannie Conroy of Shelton, Buffalo Co next door to Hall. Fannie was the dau of John Conroy and Anna Edwards: Anna was definitely from Roscommon, and possibly John was too. They too arrived in NE via PA.

But I've no MA connections!

I have more info and am keen to find living descendants. Please contact me. Maggie

Sharon, We have quite a bit of information, but the obvious question is whether you know anything about Calvin's parents. You can contact us through kinserg @ frontiernet.net . I separated the email address with two spaces, so that I won't get junk mail. Glenn and Lilllian

Sharon,
I would be interested in exchanging information on the Hoye family. I am following my wife's family and Calvin Crockett Hoye and his wife Mary E. Wallace are in her line. She has pictures of Nancy Hoye Smith and brother John Hoye, who gave her a first photo album when she was a child in southern WV(Jumping Branch, Ellison Ridge, Cool Ridge). From the picture of John and my wife's recollection, John appears to be very tall and dark skinned with high cheekbones, possibly indicating Indian in the family, which is also a family story(that there was Indian in the Hoyes). I am trying to get the 1850 census information which might point out Calvin's father, mother and siblings. Thanks, Glenn
