Hi! I'm descended from George Hubbard, who came to Connecticut in 1639, perhaps from Somerset; we know nothing about his family in Britain, as far as I know.

Hi Roger,

I haven't been on my computer since Friday so I haven't had time yet to start searching around but now that I, too, am interested in how Day's theory became the number one choice of the Hubbard name's origins. We just had a long weekend here, Victoria Day, and my company is gone so I am about to start my hunt today ... in between clening up the house again.

If you would rather contact me through email, here's my address: verdun1950@rogers.com

Have I already asked you about your Hubbard lineage? If not, from where in England did they come from? Mine are from West Walton (primarily) and area, Wisbech/Wisbech St Peter, Cambridgeshire (all mainly farmers) and only about 3-4 months ago did I realize they were also living in King's Lynn, Norfolk ... all simultaneously. So now, it's a larger group of people than I ever thought I was researching. I always wondered why my gr-gr-grandfather, Henry Hubbard, died in King's Lynn and now I have a reason why he may have died there ... visiting relatives.

Take care and I hope to find something that may reveal why he put the H on Ubba/Ubbe.

Have a wonderful day ... the sun is finally shining here; I hope it's shining where you live as well.

Heather

OK, now I know what you are looking for. How did Ubbe become Hubba (more or less)?

That puts a different spin on what I was doing even though I still want to learn more about early England and the invasions and take overs of the various peoples, i.e. the Jutes, the Angles, the Saxons, the Pics, etc.

By George, I think I got it!

Heather

Hi Roger,

I understand that you're not the 'official word' on the Hubbard name origin but if I wouldn't have read your initial post, I wouldn't be doing this very interesting research that I'm in to right now. I am relearning all the information I had been taught in school and learning a whole lot more that was never mentioned.

I found this link which I thought very interesting: Viking Invaders Settling England and France (link: http://www.154thny.com/154thnyReborn/FamilyHistory/VikingAnc..., where he writes about the early chieftains, including King Hubba (Ubba). I also found another interesting site but stupidly I didn't bookmark it so I'll have to find it again.

It is you who has got me interested in this as I totally went with the King Hubba and brother, H____(?) version. And now you have me thinking in another way ... which is a good thing. Got to take the blinders off! It has made me look for more reading about this era and the roots of the Hubbard name. So I thank you for getting me involved.

I'll keep you abreast of anything different I may find. As I say, it is all about the hunt, which I love, so perhaps between the two of us we can obliterate the King Hubba (et al) story. The early spellings of this name lend to the French name Hebert - it is obvious and the early 'Hubbards' were first mentioned after King William took over England so it stands to reason the name came from France.

Take care and keep those emails coming. And thank you again for prompting me to look into this further.

Heather

I am an amature at this so I make no claim of having inside knowledge. But, I have read what genealogists say. One cannot trace surnames back more than about the mid 1400's unless connected to royality. Before the mid 1400's surnames (where they existed) are considered an unreliable indicator of lineage. (Engligh names tend to peter out about 350 years back.)

A personal view: Our search for this kind of info creates demand which will be filled by someone ... for a price. I put Day's work in that category.

Well, yes, but we're also talking about the period when Cnut was asserting a claim to be King of England (a little after Ubbe, but not much), so there's some evidence that Danes would be settling, as well as raiding, that area.

Just a point of information, Angles and Saxons were Germans, not Scandinavians. The Vikings raided the English coastline beginning around the 800's. The British Isles had already been settled by Germans (Angles, Saxons, Frisians and Jutes) during the 5th and 6th centuries.

My pleasure! I don't think Ubb is mythical, and I think his father is based on several real chieftains, but I'd really love to know whether Day (Edward Warren Day, author of _One Thousand Years of Hubbard History_) just made it up based on his own wishful thinking, or whether he was following someone else's.

Cheers,
Roger

What evidence do we have beyond Day that Ubb/Ubbe/*Hubba settled in East Anglia? Certainly there were many Danes settling there, but as far as I can tell 1) our fullest evidence for Ubb is in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle; 2) there's very little of it; 3) he's the "son" of a chieftain who is clearly mythical; 4) there's no evidence of an initial H-.

Also, do you have any ideas about where Day got the notion? Is it found in any genealogical material before then? I imagine not, because it was only in the 19th C. that anyone but the aristocracy was deeply interested in genealogy.

I am a Hubbard researcher as well and I do believe it is an ancient Anglo-Saxon name brought to England by the Saxons. The name is very prevalent in East Anglia where King Hubba and clan settled.

However, the name is first recorded in the Domesday Book in 1046 and this 'census of sorts' was commissioned by William the Conqueror so perhaps it is an anglization of the the French forename of Hubert ... or a combinaton of both.

I can't even find any primary sources where the name is spelled with initial H-.

I think there might be some fun meta-genealogical work to be done on how the purported connection arose.

F.B. in your note is Ferdinand Bradley Hubbard (1818-1900). He married Mary Otis Dorchester (1830-?) and had six children: Siley May, Charles, Lizzie C., Isobel, Harriet "Hattie", and Lena Cora.

Fortunatus married twice, first to Eunice Potter (1831-1860) with two children: Amelia "Millie" and Harriet "Hattie", both born in NY . Then he married Charlotte Otis and they had the following children: Olive (1865-1935), Fortunatus (1866-1945), Otis (1867-1941), Alexis (1870-1931), Asahel Chester (1874-1943). All of these children, except Asahel Chester, were born in Whiteside, IL. Then family moved to Dallas Center IA, and Asahel was born.

Amelia married Alfred Pollard, Hattie married Willard F Johnson, and Olive married John Byron Slocum. Millie and her husband lived in Illinois, Hattie and her husband moved to California, and Olive and her husband stayed in Iowa, until they retired to California.

Re: George Hubbard

Heather, your frustration with the mixing of the two George Hubbard's mirrored mine. When I worked my way back to my 8-G grandfather, George Hubbard 1601-1684 of Middletown who married Elizabeth Watts, I too was astounded to see so many had Guilford George 1594 as the father of George 1601 or married to both Mary Bishop with nine children, and Elizabeth Watts with eight. When I finally found time I studied how this mess occurred and what most of the "more reliable" sources provided with their information. I wrote one document as a story titled “Geo 1594 vs...(Geo 1601)" to show a timeline of the two distinct families and their children according to four reliable sources. Click on my user ID, click on "view profile", my main family tree, search on either of the two or both (they are related by marriages within the families of Mary Bishop’s sister, and Elizabeth Watts’ brother.

As you no doubt are aware the problem continues when individuals have identified Edmund Hobart and Margaret Dewey as the parents of either George Hubbard of Guilford or George Hubbard of Middletown. I am certain after looking at their source of this information that they are copying the mistake from other public member family trees without verifying the information when there are "more reliable" sources available. Again if you locate Edmund Hobart (left solely for reference) on my tree you will find a story titled “9 Sources o…n Edmund Hobart and his children.”

Regardless of what date of birth people place on Guilford George to qualify him as the father of Middletown George, the vast majority of "reliable sources" place Guilford George birth at 1594. That would make him about 7 when Middletown George was born.

Should you do so, be certain to locate my story "Geo 1594 vs Geo 1601. Also click on any of the sources on the right side of their profiles. You may find more information.

You may notice my DNA is recorded on all my Hubbard, male ancestors. AC did not identify who provided DNA, there were only a handfull on their chart that matched up to others who claim Middletown George as an ancestor. I can pick mine out on the list and my DNA adequately matches others who claim to be a direct male descendant of George Hubbard of Middletown.

Hartley

Thank you Hartley, you gave me the clue I was looking for!
Since I wasn't able to access your tree on ancestry (I don't have a paid subscription) I went searching. I did find a tree on rootsweb/worldconnect. Which shows parents Richard Watts and Elizabeth Duck, that their son, Captain Thomas Watts first married Elizabeth Steele and then married Elizabeth HUBBARD.

That Elizabeth HUBBARD is the daughter of George Hubbard and Mary BISHOP! She first married John Norton (which I did have in my records) and then she married Captain Thomas Watts!

I've still not located a record of their children,Thomas & Elizabeth's, but evidently there were because they are mentioned in Richard Watts will, but not by name.

Is there any more information you can share with me on these family ties?

I descend through George & Mary Bishop's son John Hubbard who married Marry Merriam.

Hi to all Hubbards --

I found out last year that I was adopted. Needless to say, it was a huge shock especially in my forties. I am searching for my birthmother who I fortunately discovered was a Hubbard. I was born in August of 1966 in New Orleans. So, it is very likely she is from the South. I was relinquished to the Protestant Home for Babies in Garden District.

All I know is that she was 19 (so born between 8/31/1946 up to 8/30/1947 (that's my guess). She had two brothers one 14 and one 15.
Hoping this rings a bell with someone.

Elizabeth Ann Hubbard-Collins

Hi,
I'm looking for information on Elizabeth Ann Hubbard whom I believe to be born 1812 in Maryland. She was married to Henry Collins/Collier/Collison 7/1836 in First Methodist Episcopal Church in Baltimore, MD. There are 2 records of her marrying Henry, 1 on 7/2/1836 to Henry Collier, and 1 on 7/3/1836 to Henry Collins in FMEC. She and her children (the oldest 2 of whom were born prior to her marriage, the first also named Henry) took the Collins surname and were all listed as living with Elizabeth in Baltimore during the 1850 Census. My Collins ancestor, her son Thomas W. Collins, was born in Baltimore and lived in Talbot Co. I would appreciate any information some one might have on her.
Thanks

According to the records I have, John Hubbard was born 1630 in England (exact location is unkn) and there is a note that says his wife Mary Merriam is FROM Concord, MA which would lead me to believe she was probably born there.
John came to the America in 1633 with his parents (being about 3 yrs of age) Records show they lived in Wethersfield CT for a few years . It states Moved to Hadley Ma in 1659, and that he lived in Hatfield MA in 1652. Since records say that he and Mary married in 1648/1649, it would be wise to search for a marriage record in either Hatfield, MA.or in Concord, since that is where her parents are from.

Hi Kay,

Thanks for that information ... I didn't know the book was on-line; I should get a good night's sleep tonight once I start reading it.

I must have confused you as the excerpt I left you with is not mind; I fund this .pdf document on-line and it was all about the Hubbards. I didn't create this but I thought it was interesting and that it might have info in it that may help in finding out where 'the' George Hubbard came from in England. I know it has change my thinking in researching my Hubbards.

I am presuming your ancestors immigrated to the Colonies for religious reasons. Were they Quakers? If so, Here are some places in Norfolk where they had Meeting Halls:
•	Diss Society of Friends
•	Hingham Society of Friends
•	Holt Society of Friends
•	King's Lynn Society of Friends
•	Norfolk & Norwich Society of Friends
•	Norwich Society of Friends
•	Yarmouth, Great Society of Friends

Norfolk and Waveney Quakers: http://norfolk-quakers.org.uk/?page_id=14
-	Check here for more Quaker meetings in Norfolk

For a friend, I researched the Quakers before - re Edward Winn (Wynn) who arrived at the Massachusetts Settlement in 1633 or 1640 (my memory!; I did this a number of years ago) and he married Elizabeth Sargent (the daughter of a mucky-muck in the settlement). After awhile they started moving and spent a generation or two in Connecticut eventually making there way to Whitchurch, Ontario, Canada. And some of these Winns landed up in Whitby, where I lived, and parts around here. I have some rather old pictures of people attending the meeting in Pickering, which is two towns away from me.

It was a very interesting to compile all of this information and finding out the important people who were my friend's ancestors. There is a huge telecommunications company in Canada, Rogers, and these Winns travelled with them up to Whitchurch.

Anyway, I want to thank you for letting me know the book was on-line and by conversing with you has given me a big boost on further research of my Hubbards. Maybe, one day, I'll find one of mine who went to America.

Kindest regards,
Heather

Heather, you can actually read The 1000 Yrs of Hubbard History on line as through open library. Just type in The Thousand Years of Hubbard History, grab yourself a full pot of coffee and sit back and enjoy, it is a long read. It covers many many Hubbards.

Yes, it has been combined with and entwined with the other George Hubbard /Mary Bishop line so badly I pray diligent researchers can put pressure on Ancestry, family search and world connect to remove the incorrect material before it increases any more. I feel sorry for those who have "researched" without following proper documentation and procedures to truly locate their ancestors.

You are so so lucky to be a descendant of the George Hubbard/Elizabeth Watts line! You have a very famous ancestor by the name of Elbert Green Hubbard who died with his 2nd wife Alice Luann Moore aboard the Titanic in 1915. Besides that he was a famous author having written many books, including "Message to Garcia" which at one time was mandatory reading in high schools here in the U.S. He also started what is known as the Roycrofter movement in New York, which were a group of artisans who created beautiful work. You can Google Roycrofter and read up on all of that if you choose.

I personally have George and Mary Bishop Hubbard as my ancestors and would love to be able to tie these two lines together. I keep thinking there is a connection between these two families, since among my great aunts personal effects, I inherited a personal writing book of her in which she had Roycroft printed cards with famous sayings on them. She also had the full set of "little green books" of famous authors works which were printed by the Roycroft Printing Company.

I do find it interesting that the Silas Hubbard name first appears in the George Hubbard/Elizabeth Watts tree as a child of Rev Solomon Hubbard and Hannah Willard in 1821 being born in Mayville Chautaquah Co N. Y.(later marries Frances Julia Read.

The Silas Hubbard in the George Hubbard/Mary Bishop line first appears in 1812/1813 as the son of James Hubbard and Hulda Andrus (Andrews) and they were living in Tompkins Co. NY and later the children were living in Portage, N. Y. Livingston Co. This Silas ended up moving to Michigan.

Up until that time, I have not seen the Silas name appear anywhere in previous generations for either family.
