Yes, ours dropped the von as well, but it is on the gravestones in Virginia. There is actually a street where the von Hugos lived near Norfolk that is named for them.
One of the brothers that left Alsace was named Michael, the other I've forgoten and would have to look up.
There is an archive in Hanover that includes a family history and property documents as well; it's 63 pages, and they charge .50 euros a page. It is in German, of course.
Thanks for the interesting information. I've read it again & again. I would love to read more. Is there more you could tell me? Do you know the names of the 2 brothers who left for German lands? Are there any books I might read on the Kingdom of Hanover? My grandfather was Ottomar Gunther Hugo (1851-1922) & he lived near San Antonio, TX. Guess you have seen the photos of the Hugo cemetary headstones & the Hugo home that are on Ancestry.com. Have you found anything that shows the Hugos moving to America (Texas)? My grandmother said they dropped the "von" after awhile in Texas.

My Charles Hugo was b1855, m1882, d1932, and had six children.

Family folklore says he came to the US by way of England where he learned the textile trade. Consequently, emigration dates could be inaccurate due to ambiguity.

I do not have birth or death dates on his parents.

Carl Ottomar Günther Theodor von Hugo lived 1805 to 1875. All von Hugos are indeed related; there was only one noble house with that name, though there were three branches. One stayed in Swabia when Alsace was ceded to the French, and through them we are distantly related to the author Victor Hugo. The family title was originally Markgraf, (Margrave in English), indicating that they administered a border territory. Two brothers left for German lands after the ancestral lands were lost. One went to Bavaria and the other went to the Kingdom of Hannover, which was ruled by the Hannoverian kings of England until Victoria came to the throne. Owing for the propensity for fathering girls, many lines have died out, including the hereditary line in Hildesheim when the von Hugo manor, Leith, passed in to the hands of the von Bulow family, so the family is a small but noble one.

I don't know whether you are still interested, but John Hugo is my 3xggf, through his daughter Elizabeth Hugo Gush. I found the information below in researching him. I would be grateful for any additional information you may have on his birthplace or parents

Jim Barry
jbarry6899@aol.com

GENEALOGICAL AND PERSONAL HISTORY OF

Western Pennsylvania

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

JOHN W. JORDAN, LL. D.

Librarian of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia; Editor of "Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography"; author of various historical works.

ILLUSTRATED

VOLUME II

NEW YORK
LEWIS HISTORICAL PUBLISHING COMPANY

I915

Pp. 825-6

The name of Hugo is known far and wide in the state of Pennsylvania, as connected with the conduct of hotels of a high standard. The family came to this country from Germany, and brought with them those qualities of thrift and industry so characteristic of
Germans.

(I) John Hugo was born in Germany and came to America unmarried. He made his home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he retired from business late in life, and died in August 1885. He married Mary Elsessor, and had children: One died in infancy; Jacob, of further mention; John and Michael, retired hotel proprietors, reside in McKeesport; Elizabeth, married
Joseph Gush, and lives on a farm near McKeesport; Mary, married Peter Cassidy, and lives in McKeesport; Annie, married Lawrence Clifford, and lives in Pittsburgh.

(H) Jacob Hugo, son of John and Mary (Elsessor) Hugo, was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, January 18, 1850. His education was acquired in the public schools of Pittsburgh, and he then entered upon his business career. For a time he was in partnership with his brother John as proprietors of the hotel now conducted by Mr. Fisher, and upon the death of John, Jacob
Hugo was the sole proprietor, and conducted it alone until his death, January 21, 1896. He was well known and very popular personally, and his death was deeply regretted by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. He was a man of many-sided business ability, and was one of the organizers and a director of the local street car railway, and of the Thirteenth Street Bridge, a toll bridge. His political support was given to the Democratic Party, and he and his wife were members of St. Peter's Catholic Church.

'Mr. Hugo married (first) Carrie Abrahams, a native of Wales. He married (second) December 29, 1884, Sarah McDermott, born in county Durham, England, a daughter of Bart and Sarah (Murphy) McDermott, the former a Catholic, - the latter a Protestant. They came to America in 1874 settling at Houtzdale, Clearfield county, Pennsylvania, and came to McKeesport in 1887. He was a miner by occupation, and retired from active work when he was seventy- four years of age. He and his wife have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, and have had children: Thomas, a time-keeper; Sarah, who married Mr. Hugo; Jane; Hugh, a merchant of McKeesport, who died in 1912; Joseph, living retired at McKeesport; John, a barber of McKeesport. By his first marriage Mr. Hugo had children: Maggie, married John Crawford, lives in Point Marion; Cecelia, married a Mr. Wetzel; Clara, died in infancy; Agnes, married Dennis Downe(y?), [lives] in Charleroi, Pennsylvania; Lawrence, engaged in the real estate business in
McKeesport. By the second marriage he had: Hilda; Victor, a draftsman; Mary.

I will check with him to make sure. I now live in the UK though, but all the Hugo's are mostly in Cape Town :)
How weird would it be if we are related?! I just coincidently came across this sight as I typed in Hugo to see the origin of this family name... Freaky!
Charles,

recieve this from Jim Gray who lives in Phoenix I think he is doctor

Gray Therapy [graytherapy@myway.com]

Rick,

Been playing with the Gray genealogy some and thought I might get in touch with you. Anyway, there was something that you shard many days ago that I truly appreciated. It was the notice from your Bible concerning the note on Mary Frances Hugo's family. Was wondering if you have ever had time to look at some of the original typed notes of Amos Woods. Also I realize from the early census that it appears that Edward and Mary Hugo Gray had some daughters and also some other sons. Have you ever identified more than Joseph (Sr.), Edward (Jr.) and William as children of Edward and Mary Hugo Gray?

Over the weekend I spoke with Hubert Harmon who owns the land where the old Gray/Poff cemetery is at. Hubert, shared that a year ago some fellow from California came out to visit, went into the field and examined all the old stones, writting down information from them. I believe he couldn't have come up with much info since the stones are currently in bad condition. Someone shared some photos with me a few years back, and you could hardly read the stones. I have some very old photos of a couple of the stones that can be seen clearly (the pics were taken many years ago). Do you know of anyone who has a complete list of all who are buried in the field. The only list I have is a list that Hubert's wife shared with me a long time back. - Jim

Thanks, Jim

All I know of them was they lived in Missouri until my father was around 15 years old, and moved to Glendale, CA - They died before I was born, Dad never really spoke much about them. Alma and Clint had Four Daughters, Mildred, Myrtle, Bernice and Dorothy, and another son, Herbert. If anyone knows of them, I would appreciate it.
