Lawson A. Hewitt was my great-great grandfather. His daughter Margarett Ellen (b.1852) was my great grandmother. I don't know alot about him, Margaret was born about the time they moved from Monroe County back to Knox Co.

His father was Louis(lewis) Hewitt(Huit). I don't have my family sheets with me today or I would give you his mother and their dates. If you contact me by email kathyd300@sbcglobal.net, I could give you that information.

Amanda Cope Huitt Lowe, was the daughter of John B. Huitt, his parents are Solomon and Charity. I have been unable to find information on John's first wife amanda's mother, his second wife was Martha. It is believed that she was 1/8th per John by way of Charity's indian, but that Amanda's mother was also possibly full blood. Amanda is my g grandma's g grandma. She was also refered to by most as the old indian woman.

I do know that Charity Smith - Huitt (Hewett) was Cherokee Indian. Her grandsons were trying to get on the Dawes Rolls for the Cherokee Nation, but was too late to do so. I found that in one of my Cherokee books. It was in one of the Cherokee by Blood books. I don't have it with me now, but will send you the copy of the page I found it on. My grandmother always said she was 1/16 Cherokee and she was right. Charity Smith was my grandmother's great great grandmother, I think? what is Amanda to Solomon or Charity?
Is she a sister to one of them?

Thanks, Pat Austin
jkaustin@msn.com

I am also looking for more information regarding John Huitt and Solomon Huitt, it has been passed down thru family history that we are Indian, there are several of us in my immediate family that look Indian. We are still trying to tie some information together. If you have information about John and Amanda or Solomon and Charity, it would be greatly appreciated. My Aunt has pictures of Amanda!

Heather Beaver, 6190 Hwy C, Joplin, Mo, 64804

WF,
My local library has the several volume set of the transcribed and edited Guion-Miller applications, Cherokee by Blood.
I checked Application Number 696, but it does not contain a reference to anyone named Hewitt/Huitt.
I wonder if the handwritten reference to Cynthia Hewitt and Cherokee Nation Application # 696 is a reference to a different set of applications from Guion-Miller. You might want to check other federal documents from that time period (circa 1900) that pertain to the Cherokees. This could be a reference to one of the Dawes Roll applications, for example, or to the 1896 Applications that preceded the official Dawes Rolls. It gets a bit complicated, of course.
Good luck. Let me know if you find anything.
Best,
Patrick

On the Solomon Elbert Blair hand wittten application there is a hand wriiten note that says: "Applicant cannot really identify any aunts and uncles except.... Jack Hewett and Cynthia Ann Huitt." Below this note, another note appears: "Cynthia Hewitt-Cherokee Nation Ap # 696. Born 1812. Place of residence: Johnson County, TX" Would you please try and find out about this Cynthia? I should have mentioned this to you earlier, but my brain does not always function at optimun capacity. WF Evans

Hello, WFE
Thanks for the information. As you will read in my first message in this thread, my initial interest in Solomon Huitt stems from my belief that the James Little who was Solomon's neighbor in 1840 (Illinois Township, Washington County, Arkansas) was related to Captain John Little of the Wofford Settlement in Franklin County, Georgia, circa 1800.
I am convinced that there is a connection, and that this connection explains why these two men were neighbors in Clark County circa 1830 and in Washington County in 1840.
James Little's wife Nancy Gentry--also said to be of Cherokee descent--was likely the daughter of Tyree Gentry, whose name also appears in Franklin County, Georgia, records circa 1800....
I did look at the Guion-Miller applications involving Sarah Huitt. Interesting. I think you are very possibly correct that Solomon's Cherokee wife was related to the people named Smith who were also part of the Wofford Settlement. Her white surname suggests that if she had Cherokee ancestry, then her ancestry came from her mother.
Mitochondrial DNA testing only works for straight female lines of descent: you or these other researchers would have to find a daughter of Charity and then so on down the line: daughters only. This is because the mitochondrial "signature" is transmitted only from mothers to daughters.
Thanks again and I will keep you posted if I find anything new involving the Huitts and Littles. Please do the same for me.
Sincerely,
P. Pynes

Amanda Huitt Lowe was the person described as "that old Indian woman."

I do not have any photos these Huitt folk.

My knowledge of DNA tracing is scant insofar as tracing female descent, but I do know of two serious female researchers who descend from Sheriff John Huitt.

I don't know, but odds are that Charity Smith was one half Cherokee Indian and that her Cherokee descent comes from her maternal line. (My opinion/guess.) Go to www.google.com and plug in the the search term "Wofford Settlement." This settlement was in Franklin County, GA from about 1790- 1798. On one of the sites found on google, there is a list of the Wofford settlers. Solomon Huitt along with his supposed brothers, James and John, are listed. Also listed are Nathan, Nicholas, John and Isham Smith. Charity could connect to one of these Smith guys. Of interest is that a John and Robert Little are also listed.

There was a Intruders' (AKA "Indian land squatter") Petition signed in Franklin County, as I recall off hand in 1797. I don't have the document before me now, but Solomon Huitt and one of his supposed brothers signed the petition. Some of the Smith and Little folk may have signed too. WFE

WF:
Thanks for the additional information.
I am going to take a look at those Guion-Miller applications and perhaps get back to you about them if anything strikes me.
I assume that the Huitt descendants' references to "that old Indian woman" were references to Amanda Cope Huitt, rather than to her grandmother, Charity Smith Huitt.
Do any photographs survive of Amanda Cope Huitt?
If you think that Charity Smith's mother was Cherokee or American Indian, it would be possible to see whether that woman was of indigenous biological heritage by doing a mitochondrial DNA test of a direct female descendant of one of Charity's daughters....
Thanks again,
Patrick

Here is my last installment on the Cherokee matter.

It appears that Solomon Huitt and Charity Huitt and their grown children left Washington County, AR in 1846 and settled in Dallas County, TX soon after the county was formed. One son was John (B ?) Huitt who many say was elected first Sheriff of Dallas County in 1846. John died in office in 1848 leaving behind some kids by an UNK first wife and some kids by a second wife ("consort") named Martha. One of the kids by Sheriff John's first wife was Amanda Cope Huitt. Amanda was appointed a guardian after Sheriff John's death. Amanda apparently married young. You can find her in the 1850 US Census for Tarrant County, TX under the name of Amanda Low, age 16, and her husband, William C (Charles)Low. Next door you will find the household of Issac Low, father of this William. You can find william and Amanda in the 1880 Tarrent County Census too under the name of Lowe. Anyway, to come to the point... I have seen references in which some of Amanda's descendants described her as "that old Indian woman." WF Evans

My Henry Brewer was enumerated in the 1840 Pike County, AR US Census. I do not know who the Henry Brewer you found in Clark County, AR in 1840 was. He my have been a first cousin to my Henry. My Henry (b. 1780 in Chatham County, NC) was the son of Oliver Brewer Sr. Oliver/Henry's path appears to have been: NC> Knox County, TN> Washington County,MO> Clark County, AR> Pike County, AR. Oliver/Henry arrived in Clark in about 1819. Pike was formed from Clark and Hempstead Counties in 1833. Henry and his wife, Elizabeth Hewitt/Huitt, lived in Murfreesboro, Pike County, AR from at least 1840 until their deaths in the 1870's. They are buried in the Murfreesboro City Cemetery.
Regarding the Cherokee Indian repirations matter, I have a copy of the Guion-Miller Book of Applications pertaing to Solomon Elbert Blair. Insofar as I can tell, the application numbers are 21378 and 21379. The first pertained to Audrey B. Childer and her two children. Solomon and Texas Blair's affidavits appear on Audrey's application. The second, 21379, was Solomon's application number. All it says is that Solomon's application was denied as was Audrey's. I also have a document titled "Power of Attorney and Contract" pertaing to Solomon's application. It is a four page document/form completed in long hand. It was stamped received by the Indian Office of Eastern Charokees on 4/1/1907. Solomon signed this document on 3/23/1907.

I will send you another installment that adds to the conclusion that Charity Smith descended from a Cherokee Indian. W. F.
W.F. Evans--
Thanks very much for the information. That helps.
There are two Henry Brewers on the 1840 census for Arkansas. Which one is your Henry? One is living among the Gentry/Ward family in Clark County, but I don't think this man is your ancestor, but rather a Henry Brewer with the same name....
Solomon Huitt's Cherokee wife is interesting. There are several interesting Cherokee connections involving Huitt and the people living near to him in Illinois Township, Washington County, Arkansas, on the 1840 census.
James Little's wife Nancy Gentry is also said to have been of Cherokee descent.
Ambrose Harnage was a friend of Major Ridge and his first wife was a Cherokee mixedblood woman named Nancy Sanders.
Judge Jonathan Newman's daughter Louisa married Ezekial Buffington, another Cherokee mixedblood.
And that may only scratch the surface.
These people were literally living within a mile or two of the Cherokee Nation, so perhaps it is not surprising that they had so many cultural connections to the Cherokees....
The application you mentioned from 1907 sounds like a Guion-Miller Eastern Cherokee application. Do you happen to know the number of the application? I can likely find a transcription of the application in the multi-volume set called "Cherokee By Blood."
Thanks for your help.
The application may have also been denied because the applicants could not prove a relationship to the Eastern Cherokees (in North Carolina at that time), whose descendants were being compensated for treaty violations by the U.S. government.
Sincerely,
P.
Mr. Pynes:
Charity Smith is said to have descended from Cherokee Indians. Solomon Huitt and Charity had a daughter named Sarah Huitt/Hewett (b. 1812 in AR and d. 1879 in TX). She was married to Hiram Blair. Sarah/Hiram had a son named Solomon Elbert Blair (b. 1846/7 in Texas, probably Grayson County. See 1850 US Census for Grayson County.) According to the docment I have, this Solomon E. Blair made an appliction for Indian repirations to the US Commissioner for Indian Affiars on April 1, 1907. Solomon recorded on his application that his mother, "Sarah Hewett" told him that he was 1/8th Cherokee Indian. He said his mother was "generally recognized in her community as having Indian blood." Solomon's brother, Texas W. Fine Blair, recorded a statement affirming Solomon assertions. Solomon's appication identifies his maternal grandparents as as Solomon Hewett and "Grandma." The name, Charity, does not appear on the application. Solomon's application was denied, apparently because it was filed after the deadline date.
My proven third great grandmother was Elizabeth Hewett (Huitt), (b. 1805 in MO and d. 1875 in Pike County, Arkansas.) She married Henry Brewer in 1829 in Clark or Pike County, AR, and Solomon Huitt and Charity were in Clark County, AR in 1829. I believe that Solomon and Charity were the parents of my Elizabeth, but I can't prove it conclusively for lack of a will. W. F Evans

Solomon Huitt and Captain John Little

I am also looking for more information about Solomon Huitt, b. 1770.

He was closely associated with John and James Little in Georgia, Missouri Territory, and Arkansas, 1798-1844.

For example, the records for the Cherokee Agency in Tennessee show Captain John Little, Solomon Huitt, and a few other people surnamed Little and Huitt living in a settlement along the border between the Cherokee Nation and Georgia in 1804. Apparently the settlement was removed from the Cherokee Nation by the federal government....

John Little, Sr. and Solomon Huitt also appear in the Lawrence County, Missouri Territory (later Arkansas) records for 1815-1816. Huitt was in the Missouri Territory by 1805.

Huitt and Little were both living in Clark County, Arkansas, in 1830.

By 1840 James Little (son of John?) and Solomon Huitt (Hewitt) are neighbors living in Illinois Township, Washington County, Arkansas. Another of their neighbors was Ambrose Harnage, whose mixedblood Cherokee children were members of the Cherokee Treaty Party.

The wife of James Little was Nancy Gentry, supposedly of Cheroke descent. The Gentrys were also living in Clark County in 1830. They were in Franklin Co. Georgia circa 1795-1805.

The Little family did have documented connections to the prominent whites and mixedblood Cherokees of Washington Co., all of whom were associated with Sophia Sawyer's Female Seminary in Fayetteville.

Nancy Gentry's nephew (?) Samuel Gentry Heffington married two Cherokee women (one a Harnage). He is documented in Starr's History of the Cherokee Indians.

Does anyone have further information to share about Solomon Huitt and his wife Charity Smith , especially information pertaining to their possible Cherokee connections?

Thanks.
P.
Hi! My personal interest is the surname MARLENEE. Everyone in the US with that surname is related to 2 brothers for whom we can find no parents. I have info that Bessie Iona Marlenee married Walter B. Huitt in Guthrie County, Iowa on 20 October 1903. I think they had at least 4 children, maybe 5: Merrill born in 1906, Tracy born ?, and 3 unknown (to me) daughters. I have Bessie Iona Marlenee as the daughter of Henry Marlenee and Mary Frances Moore. I would be interested in Bessie's children's names. My reason for going after collateral lines is that family researchers have worked 20+ years following the sons and not finding the brothers' parents. I'm going after the women in the family, thinking that daughters may have handed down family stories better than sons did.

Hi Nancy: They came through and I was able to look at them. My question is: given that John Huitt was born 1761, do you think the John Huit listed is someone other than William's son? He would only have been ten years old in 1771, and while not unheard of -- say in the capacity of drummer boy or other type of musician or flag bearer -- I think he was a bit young to have been in this militia. By 1776 however, he would have of course been 16 years old, a much more common age. If the John Huit is not his son, could he still be a relative? I note also Charles Hewet, as well as a William Wilkinson jr and a Hammon Wilkerson. They could be, but not necessarily related to Tacey Wilkinson Huitt. Given that John was born in VA and I presume, though it's not necessarily the case, that they were also married in VA; Wilkinson might have followed them to NC, but since it's a fairly common name, they could as easily not be related. I am aware that pensions were only rewarded if the applicant was indigent or an invalid. Though William would have been elderly when he went to MS with his grandson, the fact that he was being cared for by Jonathan may be part of why he himself seems never to have applied for a pension. That would have been a bonanza had he, since final dispersion of funds would have listed his children. But alas....

I think looking at deeds in Granville NC for any ties to the other Huit/Hewits listed in the oaths would be one way to go; also going back to look at deeds in GA where William lived (I forget but I think it was Wilkes) for any mention of family ties.

Nancy: I would be interested in seeing the Oath of Allegiance. Where did you find it? Or can you send me a copy? Was the "Soldiers in the Revolution" for those in VA, NC or SC? If I get a chance to go through my stuff (and it's a lot of stuff generally, not just on the Hewitts/Huitts) I'll let you know what I unearth.

A lot of men fought in the Rev. who don't have pensions; a pension was just something they voluntarily applied for, a lot didn't. William signed The Oath of Allegiance, which the DAR will accept; also I've found his name in a list of soldiers and the title of the chapter was something like "Soldiers of the Revolution", so the link is oblique but it's there. I have John's pension, but he didn't refer to William by name, only "my father"- fat lot of good THAT does! I have gone through the internet trying to find proven links between James & William. Most have not replied; I think my insistence on "proof" rather than heresay is the klinker. I wrote Bill Huitt years ago and it seems that all he has are his personal notes, which the DAR won't accept (they used to, but not anymore!). If you find anything, let me know, I'd really appreciate it!

James Huitt

Hi Nancy: Not sure what email address you have. If it's the one at Sony then it's defunct. I would have to look through my things to see what the source of James being one of William's sons is, but I do know he's listed in several people's delineation of William & Tacey's children. Since leaving Sony all of my materials have been in flux, and I've not had time to refile and go through everything. You might want to check the various Huitt/Hewitt sites to see who else lists James or who claims descent from him and ask them their source. I still have not been able to find proof that Anna Hewitt is one of his daughters, though I'm fairly sure that she is. I've not seen anything that indicates William Sr ever claimed a RW pension, though his son John did, in Illinois. The Hewitt bible, of course, would help, but that went to Mississippi with William and his grandson Jonathan. Jonathan's probate, to my knowledge, doesn't mention it, so either it didn't survive to his death (about 1835, I think) or one of his children eventually got it, but I've not found anyone who says they have it, or knows about it. The bible was mentioned in John's pension application; he said his father William had it. No one has yet gone into the DAR under William Hewitt that I am aware of, though if memory serves, they have gone in under son John. Because I can't yet prove Anna's ties to William, I haven't gone to the DAR to add him to the patriot list. I went into the DAR under a different RW ancestor. It may be, and you may want to check, that James was proved under deeds between himself and William, either land deeds of deeds of gift of some sort. William left GA for MS by 1810, and was dead by 1816.

Chris , this is me, your cousin Nancy. I've written before but you haven't gotten back to me; I've been sick over the holidays and unable to bug you! Can you share with me the text you have from James' will? I already have proof about James and Elizabeth, but I also need proof linking James with his father William. Do you have anything on that?

I feel like I've struck gold! I have "proof" that the DAR will accept that James and Elizabeth were married. I am also trying to enter this line into the DAR going through James to his father William, but I can't find anything linking James with William -- except just other people's notes on the internet, which the DAR won't accept. How are you entering the DAR through James? PLEASE get back to me -- I can't find any Huitt researchers interested in the DAR!!!

I'm also descended from James, and am trying to get this line into the DAR (It's in under James' brother John, I believe). Since James didn't fight in the Rev., I need to enter the line under his father William, which I can, but so far I haven't found anything linking James with his father William. Do you have anything on this link? Thanks!

PJ! I've been trying to email you and it comes back (probably an old address). We used to email back and forth ages ago; I'm just now picking up the Huitt research after years of inactivity. Do you have any proof linking William and Tacey to son James? I'm descendent from James; since he was born during the Rev. War, he didn't fight of course, and I'm having a devil of a time linking him up with father William. I can get this line into the DAR if I can find proof for this one link. Thanks!
