I just ran accross this post and compared to www.Hulsenet.net.
Greenville 1845-1925 is in the database and a note at the bottom of the page for family unit 35 says that this family unit is believed to be related to Clan V the descendents of Meverrell Hulse from England.
If that is the case a DNA test will show haplogroup R1b as two people who trace back to Clan V have shown that Haplogroup. All the other Hulse, and variant spellings of that name, men in the USA who have tested are in Haplogroup I1 and descend from Vikings who settled both the netherlands and parts of England.
If anyone is interested in doing that test to confirm this I can answer questions about testing.
Albert Allen hulse

Richard Hulse - Joseph Hulse - Family Unit 95 - Related!!!

DNA testing has shown descendents of Clan R are related to descendents of Joseph Hulse (1756-1821) and to descendents of family unit 95.

The tests show that Clan D descendents are related but that relationship goes back to a time prior to the use of surnames. This means that the over 240 family trees on ancestry that show Joseph Hulse descending from the Holsaert line would be wrong.

I am looking for others who have had DNA testing that would help to show the relationship of the different Hulse clans and Family units as shown on www.Hulsenet.net.

Albert Allen Hulse

Hi Glenn;
If Philip is right on this you will be Haplogroup I1 if you have your DNA tested. A number of Hulse and Hults have been tested. You should find a close match to one of them.
There were 3 Families in New York and Virginia in the 1630 to 1776 time frame with the name Hulse, Holsaert (Hulse). Many of them signed with a mark and those writing the document for them used the spelling Hults.
There are 47 Harry in the database. Do you have more information? Spouse name, date married?
Albert Allen Hulse

Since you live in Nassau County, you are probably descended from Richard Hulse, who settled in Brookhaven Township
(Suffolk County)between 1675 and 1681. I don't have all
of that information on my laptop (I am presently driving
across the country) but in January when I get back I can
give you avenues to pursue. There are numerous spellings
of the name in the Brookhaven and Hempstead records.
"Hults" seems to be the most consistent spelling after 1713.
I will need your e-mail address since I will be including attachments.
Hi. My father was Earl W Jones, son of Walter Irving Jones and Pearl Olive Hulse of Long Island, NY. They had three younger daughters: Shirley, Violet, and Roberta between 1910 and 1924. I have never known any of my family on either side of my parents' families. However, through Ancestry, this summer I met a cousin and talked to another from my mother's side. I would like to find the rest of my family. My mother was Charlotte Hope Jones. My father took my baby daughter and I to Long Island in 1968 to meet his Aunt Bess Cameron and her son, Robert. He also had me meet someone by the name of Williams that was a family member with a daughter about my age. I hope your connection to the Hulse side of the Family will help me find the rest of the my relatives. Thank you for your help.
Hi Lorraine, and others;
With at least three families on long island it has always been interesting trying to keep them straight. My Oldest proven Ancestor is Joseph Hulse 1756-1821. Not proven but many of us have Joseph descending from the Holsaert line that was on long Island at the same time as The Richard Hulse line.
Recent DNA tests show that I am an exact match to Brian who Descends from Richard Hulse. It also Shows that a Descendent from Benjamin Holsaert brother Thomas is in the same Haplogroup I1, but has an older clade or subgroup of I1.
If we don't have a non-paternity event here it suggests that Clan D and Clan R are related about 600 to 900 years further back, or before the time of Surnames. Thus two Families who come from separate immigrants were related between 800 and 1100 AD.

If anyone in England has traced back further on the line that Richard Hulse is from I would like to know if they found any Hulse who came to England from The Netherlands in that time frame.

Albert

Mr. Richards had a Needle and Notions shop on Maiden Lane, NYC (near the World Trade Center) and urged the Petfords to settle in NY.

However, Henrietta had cousins in Bowling Green, Ohio and wanted to visit them. The Petfords settled in Bowling Green and had two daughters, Elizabeth (Lizzie) born in 1843 and Emma Maria, born in 1844.

Charles traveled throughout the South on horseback as a circuit rider for the Southern Baptist Conference as a preacher of the Gospel in rural places. It was a very rough and hard life, and he died in 1850 when Emma Petford was only 6 years old.

After Charles' death, Henrietta Petford and her two little girls left Ohio and travelled back to New York by way of the Erie Canal. After the death of Mrs. Richards, Henrietta Petford married Richard Richards, (now a widower) who had two children - Samuel and Selina about the same ages of Henrietta’s daughters. When he retired, they moved to Tremont (which is now a part of the Bronx, NY). Hope Township (one time known as Doorpark, later Calhoun, and finally M. Hope), Orange County, New York
The first generation, the original Ketcham, and progenitor of the families in America, was Edward Ketcham, who came from England on the Hopewell. He settled at Ipswich, Massachusetts, in 1635, freeman March 1637, removed to Southold, Long Island, New York where he was a land owner in 1637. He died at Stratford, Connecticut in 1655, leaving seven children (four sons and three daughters: Mary, Hannah and Hester).

John, his son, was at Ipswich, Mass. in 1648, representative in general court, removed to Souket, Brookhaven, Long Island, New York, constable and notary in 1662, member of the Connecticut Legislature in 1664. John Ketcham removed with his family some years later, to the present town of Mt. Hope, called in those early days, Deerpark. Here he purchased several hundred acres of land. These included the farms owned and occupied during the last fifty years, by the late Amos Ketcham, Joseph Ketcham, William S. Little, Andrew D. Thorn, Gabriel Hallock, and a portion if not the whole of the farm now occupied by Lewis A. Ketcham.

The house first occupied by John Ketcham and his family, was a log house, situated on that part of the farm of land, known to us as the Amos Ketcham or grist mill farm, occupying a spot in what is now a field to the northwest of the present house on said farm. Portions of the original claim have remained to, and are still occupied by members of the Ketcham family, who are descendants of John and Sarah Matthews Ketcham

John Ketcham spent the remainder of his life in the home founded here, dying at an advanced age April 21, 1794.
We assume we're related to the Hulses on Long Island but I haven't made the connection and missed the publication of the Hulse family history that Lynn Harper did which may have connected some of those families. Interestingly, one of my great great grandfather's brothers, had a daughter named Pearl. I always think such evidence, while circumstantial, to be hopeful.

Interesting message for several reasons, not the least of
which is that I used to live in East Moriches and was in Patchogue frequently. I can tell you a good bit about the Hulse family from our immigrant ancestor Richard Hulse
through my great-grandfather Samuel whose family moved
from Brookhaven township to Hempstead. Samuel left Hempstead for Minnesota and ultimately Iowa in the mid-1850s. Please write to me directly if I can be helpful.
Philip Sonnichsen, cpsonnichsen@gmail.com

My grandmother was Pearl Olive Hulse who married Walter Irving Jones. They had five children between 1908-1924. The first died as an infant. Earle W. Jones, oldest and my father, was born in 1909. He had three younger sisters, Shirley,Violet and Roberta. Have you seen any of these names. I never knew any of my family on my father's side and just recently found some cousins on my mother's side thru Ancestry. It is wonderful finding family!! My grandparents were from the Patchogue area. Thank You for any help.

Esther Mapes
Caleb Mapes Hulse m. Jerusha Petty
Hannah Hulse m. Brewster Terry
Brewster Terry m. Urania Davis
Nancy Davis Terry m. James Wilson Yates
Irene Yates m. Jacob H. Shaffer

1) Paul Hulse is the first one of this family whose direct line can be definitely traced. There can be no doubt but that he was the grandson of Richard and Hanna Hulse who were in Brookhaven, L.I. between 1665-1670 but through which son is not known. In a deed given by Paul’s son Caleb Mapes Hulse he mentions “land that was my father’s” but a thorough search at Riverhead fails to reveal any land belonging to Paul, owning no doubt to deeds being unrecorded.

Paul Hulse was a Deacon in the Presbyterian Church at Middle Island, L.I., and is buried in its cemetery across the road from its edifice and his gravestone shows that he died Feb. 7, 1799 in his 91st year. He married first in Southold, L.I., Dec. 2, 1747, Esther daughter of Caleb and Tabitha (Alibon) Mapes. When she died is not known. He married second, July 22, 1773, widow Mary Filer of Drowned Meadow who survived him. He made his will at Brookhaven, Oct. 10, 1785, which was proven April 12, 1799 in which he mentions his wife Mary and bequeaths his son Isaac “the place where I live” and names his other children as Caleb M., Tabitha and Martha. This will is filed in Riverhead, L.I. Liber B. p. 43.

During the Revolutionary War, he was Deacon Paul Hulse, of the 4th Company of Militia under Capt. David Mulford, signed the Association in Brookhaven, in May 16, 1775 and June 8, 1775. (The Refugees of 1776 from L.I. to Conn. pp. 1060 and 1061.)

2) Caleb Mapes Hulse, son of Deacon Paul and Esther (Mapes) Hulse was born at Coram, L.I. Sept. 22, 1748 and died there Jan. 1, 1810. He married at Wading River, L.I. July 22, 1773, Jerusha, daughter of John and Charity Petty of that place. She was baptized in the Presbyterian Church at Mattituck as their daughter on Aug., 29, 1753 and died at Fire Place, Sept. 7, 1840. They are both buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery at Middle Island, L.I.

He was known as Major Caleb Hulse, serving as 2nd Major in the Suffolk County Militia in 1797 but his name has not been found on the Revolutionary rolls. He made his will in Brookhaven, Dec. 3, 1808, which was proven Jan. 8, 1810, in which he mentions his wife Jerusha and names his children as Hannah Terry; Juliana Davis; Elizabeth Ellison; son Phineas and his son Ulysses, leaving them part of the Jonathan Benjamin farm which “I had by deed from Benjamin Overton, executor of Jonathan Benjamin”; son Caleb Mapes and his wife Lucy; son Whitehead K. “land that was my father’s”; son Daniel “land I had of Elisha Hammond”; son Isaac; son Simeon; daughter Charity; daughter Elizabeth. His executors were his wife with Benjamin Hallock and Capt. Samuel Davis.

His son Isaac became a distinguished naval surgeon in the United States service, receiving the appointment of surgeon’s made in the Navy in May 1823. In 1824 he was made Assistant Surgeon of the naval hospital at Gasport, Va., and in 1825 was made Surgeon. He was located for some time at Pensacola, Fla. and in 1838, received the appointment of Fleet Surgeon of the West Indies Squadron.

3) Hannah Hulse, daughter of Caleb Mapes and Jerusha (Petty) Hulse, was born at Wading River, L.I. September 12 or 17, 1774 and died at Patchogue, L.I. July 22, 1858 and is buried there. She married first in 1789, Elisha Hammond, born in Coram, L.I., who died there Nov. 20, 1803 in his 36th year and who is buried in the Baptist cemetery of that place. She married second in Feb. 1807, Brewster, born March 29, 1770, died Feb. 1, 1841, son of Timothy Brewster and Elizabeth (Davis) Terry, who is also buried at Patchogue, L.I.

In a private manuscript, the children by her first husband are named Samuel Smith Jerusha, Caleb and Mary; by her second husband, Brewster, Rhoda Swazey, Eliza Ann, Charlotte Marilla and Ophelia Hatfield.

References:
Presbyterian Cemetery at Middle Island, L.I., Council of Appointment, N.Y.

I am seeking any information that may identify Anna Hulse who married William Taulman before 1816. I believe they were married in New York and she died in Ohio in 1819. William died in Flat Rock Indiana in 1820. They left two known sons, William and Calvin, and a daughter known from a census.

Hi, Frank, How are you? Still going to Tenn.? My aunt asks about you.

I've found some interesting ties to the Holsonbake(back, beck) family. I think they met in Tenn and went on through Ark and on to TX. Jeptha Holsonbake was my grandmother's grandfather. Her mother was Margaret Zoie Holsonbake wife of Thomas McKinney Hulse. We need to meet at the library in Nashville! It is magnificent! And, they are so helpful! Linda lpeveto@yahoo.com

Have you tried Hulse Clan V? Researched by John Slayton. It's accurate. My line goes through AV Hulse whose son was James P. Hulse (my great-great grandfather). My g-grandfather was Thomas McKinney Hulse and his daughter, "Tassie" was my grandmother. Is your AV Hulse the one that was married to Nancy(?) Rector. If so, the above will help.

We live in Houston, Texas. I can be reached at lpeveto@yahoo.com

There is a AV Hulse who has a statue in his memory in Nashville, Tenn. He represented two different districts in the State of Tennessee. I've not looked back at my records for a while....but, maybe, we're looking at two different people.

I am Linda Peveto. My line goes through AV Hulse who was married to Nacncy(?) Rector. His son was James Peart(l) Hulse who fought witht he Confederacy in Arkansas. He came to Texas and spent 68 years as a circuit-riding Methodist preacher. He is buried in Rising Star, Texas with other Hulses. My great-grandfather was Thomas McKinney Hulse (son of JP Hulse and husband of Margaret Zoie Holsonbake). My grandmother was Tassie (Itasca) Hulse Smith. My mother was Allene Delores Smith, Tassie's daughter.

I'm interested in corresponding with you if you have time. My husband (Mathematics) and I(Psychology) are college professors. We retired and our college is growing so fast -- we went back to help in the crunch. We have two sons, one is a Special Agent in the US Secret Service and one has a recreational 1,000 acre lake/restaurant/park about 90 miles north of Houston. I am a native Houstonian. We've been back in Houston 36 years. I can be reached at lpeveto@yahoo.com. I'm trying to make contact with some of the West Texas Hulses, also.

Linda Peveto
