My understanding is that He was once known as the richest man in the valley. He was a school teacher and farmer. when Katherine died, He gambled all his money away. Is the cemetary still there? markers??Someone must have a record of graves. If so then what are they going to do with all the bodies when they build??? The J. Church grave maker where Katherine(my ggg Aunt) is burried does not have his death date on it. Only birth. If he IS burried with Katherine, it may be something nice to do to ask realatives to donate $ to a tombstone company to complete his burriel by putting his death date.I recently started looking into my roots and I find it sometimes very sad that alot of realatives are forgotten, especially the children that have died in the 1800's. I have Espenschied, Smitth x2 and Stringer x2 that are my direct paternal lines. The Espenschied line is absolutely enormous and vast clear back to 1600.Some suicides and alot of childhood deaths compared to my other lines. I've even dug up family secretes long forgotten/hidden that knowone should of known about in some of my lines. I started this to give something to my children to know where they come from...

The infirmary no longer exists, the properties were recently sold. But it is on the south east side of New Philadelphia, across the road from the airport and behind the Kent Sate University branch campus. I believe the building were to be converted to apartments. Joshua's burial is confusing, death certificatem said Jersusalem as does some church records, other records say the infirmary. My family would not talk about it as he is my ggrandfather, do know there was not money to bury him during the depression.

The records at the Jerusalem Church Cemetary show Katherine (Espenshied) to be buried in that cemetary. Also add Federick b.7/79 as one of the children of Joshua & Katherine

Debbie,
Email me at "hammerhummer @ hotmail . com" I live about an hour south of the Carroll county group and taught in Kokomo, just south of there, for 4 years. I remember the family moving to Washington and the name Ryland. I'm currently working on a branch of the family from Ohio that is more closely related to you than me. Several of the grandfathers ended up having the Humrick become their middle name on legal records and the last name just became Houser. Your family originated in Fairfield County (SE of Columbus) in the early 1800s, before moving to Indiana.

Hi Glenn-My name is Debbie Jones; maiden name Humrickhouse. My grandfather, John Campbell Humrickhouse, was born in Carroll County. He later moved to Snoqualmie, Washington (married Addie Bell Tobias). My grandparents had 3 sons, George, John,(Jack), and my father Ryland. My father was the only son that married. He married Gertrude Margaret Tew. I have an older sister Barbara, and an older brother Charles. My brother has 2 daughters. So our line ends here as far as the Humrickhouse name continuing. My father gave me some family information before he passed away last September at the age of 91. If I recall correctly, there is a Jacob and an Ebenezer in our line. Thank you for posting your info. I've been working off and on on this line. I also find it very interesting that there are so many different spellings of this last name. I do know that our german name and spelling was Homrighausen. I know this isn't much info, but I thought I'd let you know. Any other info that you have if you're willing to share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again. Debbie Humrickhouse-Jones

I've made a recent breakthrough regarding the Homrig family from Wisconsin. Their ancestor Matthias was the brother of Johann Sebastian the patriarch of the Homrighaus family in Herkimer County, New York. Other connecting evidence has many families passing through Herkimer County and settling in Outagamie Co, Wisconsin. Many Sassmannshausens also are included in both families.

Homrighausen and its various spellings - long story short

I've been working on the Homrighausen line and its various spellings for 2 years now (to my wife's chagrin at times). Anyway, for anyone who's interested, here's a basic run down of the various branches in America. With the help of MANY others, I currently have almost all branches tied back to Diedenshausen, Germany. Here's the nationwide run-down.

1. Descendants of Peter Humrickhouse/Humrichouse - settled around Hagerstown, MD in the late 1700s, one son branched to Coshocton County, Ohio, another to Shepherdstown, WV. Peter was Revolutionary War patriot, lots of information on-line. Family tree has been listed often on-line, though most stop around the 1880s.

2. Descendants of Jacob Humrickhouse, brother of Peter, above. Settled in northern Indiana and descendants mostly populate areas of Cass, Miami, and Carroll Counties there. Several slight variations in spelling exist.

3. Humrichouser-(I believe this family descends from another brother of Peter Humrickhouse, but I have not found enough info to confirm this) originated around the Ashland, Ohio, area and have for the most part, remained in that area.

4. Humerickhouse-several branches (see also section 8), most are descendants of Georg Wilhelm Homrighausen (b. 1782) immigrated about 1819. Originally settled in New Philadelphia, Tuscarawas County,Ohio. One son settled in Van Wert, Ohio and had children who remain there or moved to Wells and Madison counties of Indiana. Another son moved to Greene County, Indiana and had 4 sons among others: 2 sons stayed in Indiana, 2 moved to Franklin County, Kansas. A third son of GW stayed in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, and his family lived there for several generations, although some moved to Lyon County, Kansas in the 1880s and had a large population there, although many moved to California later.

5. Humrighouse- descendants of Johann Philip Homrighausen, brother of Georg Wilhelm #4 above. Family stayed in Tuscarawas County, Ohio area for the most part.

6. Homrighaus-several relatively unconnected groups, 1 small group in Herkimer County, New York area; another group settled for one generation in Bremer County, Iowa, then many moved to Galveston, Texas about 1890s. I currently do not have this family connected, but they at one time came through Tuscarawas county.

7. Homrighous(e) - descendants of Johann Wilhelm Homrighausen originally settled in Fairfield County, Ohio. Several children stayed there, others moved to western Indiana and central Illinois. Many were involved in jewelry business, some in Indiana family shortened name to Homrig, not to be confused with Homrig family in Wisconsin.

8. descendants of Georg Wilhelm Homrighausen b. 1753. Sons of this GW (uncle of the other Georg Wilhelm) settled in Darke County, Ohio (mostly daughters so name died out there), and eastern Illinois counties of Edgar, Vermilion, Champaign, and Franklin, and Vermillion County, Indiana. Name spelled various ways: Darke county-Humrichouse and Humrickhouse, other groups - Humrickhouse, Humerickhouse.

9. Many families of Homrighausens exist, most from families that immigrated in the latter 1800s and found smart enough immigration officials that they were able to keep the original spelling intact. Large branches settled in Iowa and Kansas. Other groups located near Monroe County, Illinois; north central Wisconsin; newer generations near Tuscarawas County, Ohio; Baltimore, Maryland among others. Some of these branches have been connected, while others have individual branches documented, but their position in the tree has not been determined.

This family is extremely interesting in that its spelling has changed many times throughout US history, but eventually all spellings can be traced to a small region of western Germany. Interested family members, there will be a nationwide Homrighausen reunion in Tuscarawas County, Ohio in June 2008.

My grandfather was Teddy Humerickhouse from Odon,Indiana. I moved from Ohio to Kansas a few years ago. It is my understanding that my "line" started in Tuscarawus County Ohio which is pretty close to Canton, OH from there they split up and about half went to SW Indiana and the others went to Ottawa, Kansas, where sure enough the name exists. There is a Humerickhouse museum in or near Cambridge Ohio off I-77 SE Ohio. Long story short I'm a desendant of William Wheeler Humerickhouse.
Jim Woodruff Pomona, Kansas

Humerickhouse/Homrighausen name origin

Homrighausen was a very small village in the former county of Wittgenstein-Berleburg in central Germany. In the early 1700s, the peasants were moved by the Count so that he could build a hunting lodge there. However, the surname Homrighausen came from the name of that village and is widespread in that region. Some came to America as early as the 1700s, but more came in the mid-1800s to Iowa, Kansas, and other destinations. Some were from the extant villages of Wunderthausen and Diedenshausen. The spelling variations no doubt came from US officials who could not cope with German.

I also have a lot of information on the Homrighausens from Diedenshausen and neighboring Wunderthausen; I've been in touch with Piet and was able to supply the missing links. My real specialty are the Riedesels of the world, whose origins are interconnected with the Homrighausens and who often settled in the same places. I would appreciate hearing from any Homrighausen descendants who have Riedesel ancestry, or knew of emigrant Riedesels.
paul@riedesel.org
www.riedesel.org

Re: Homrighausen descendants in Germany

My great grandmother was a Homrighausen. Her name was Annie Homrighausen Ward, and since my grandmother was born in 1906, I would imagine Annie Homrighausen was born in the late 1880s. I'm not sure if she was born in Germany or America, because until I started researching it, none of our family history has been written down. Through the years, the oral history gets sketchier and sketchier! :) Is there a website or address I can write to for more information?
I know the Homrighausens settled in or near Quincy, Illinois and/or Steffenville, Missouri. I have been told some of my family was even partially responsible for the settlement of Steffenville, tho I don't know if that was the Homrighausens or not. Any info you have or anywhere you know that I could find more would be MUCH appreciated.
Thank you!
~Diane Given

Ben,
they most certainly were related. If you email me and give me the info you have on Humerick, then I can look in my 4840 Humerickhouse's and determine where the Humerick branch fits in.
jerrylh@glis.net
thanks

Grant,
I have it all figured out and put together in a fine family tree album. Please remember--all info you put on the internet becomes property of the company you enter it on and it then becomes their copy with rights...you may have to pay to even see your own work..so do not enter info to the internet.
email me and I will answer all your questions.
Thanks
Jerry
