Good evening,

I just reviewed Volume 1 of Descendants of Nicholas Humes of Massachusetts and am sorry to say that I do not find an Oscar or a Tomlinson. There is a Volume 2, but I suspect you are not of this line. Good luck with your search.
Tim

I have a Humes family from Reading, Hamilton County, Ohio, John and Margaret(Redinbaugh). They were orginally from Pennsylvania. John Humes built the first frame house erected in Cincinnati and was a furniture maker. He and Margaret had three children: Elizabeth Humes, Mary Jane Humes and John Craig Humes. Margaret died in December of 1805 and John remarried six months later in June of 1806. He married (Polly) Mariah Voorhees of Reading. Are you related to this John Humes? He served in the War of 1812 and died in 1829 leaving Maria with seven children.

The father of Rufus, Samuel Humes (1719-1759, was brother to my grandfather, Robert Humes (1731-1805) both son's of Nicholas Humes. I found a relative on the Holmes Project website with whom our common ancestor is Robert. Our DNA profile match exactly including DYS 392=8 which is a very rare value at that marker (most R1b1a2 are 13). That would indicate that my DNA profile matches Robert's exactly and, by implication, Nicholas'. I went through Family Tree DNA for my study. 37 marker should do the trick. Then join the Home/Humes project and/or Holmes project (YSearch will also work) to compare results. I am an amateur at all this, however, I'd say you've found your family if we match. Good luck.
Is your Y-DNA through Rufus? My ancestor, George Humes, has proven to be on the the most difficult roadblocks EVER, and I have exhausted all other means of finding his father. However, I have been able to identify Rufus as the most promising candidate through census comparison and the middle name Kenyon, which is common in George's descendants and is also the married name of Rufus' daughter Lois.

I am thinking that a DNA test will be the only way to confirm the George-Rufus match.

Yeah. It's definitely unusual. I got copies of the newspaper articles from the Ft. Smith library. Ft. Smith was the gateway to the west, so there is a lot of history there. Like I said, I ended up with with few people doing research for me - mainly because they were intrigued by the story. One of them was a Ft Smith resident. It was a really cool experience and got some goods tips from experienced researchers.

I'll gather up what I have a make it available for you. I can probably work on it this weekend. I've been meaning to startup my research again anyway.

Thank you for the response. That's not exactly one of those warm and fuzzy stories from the ancestry.com commercials, is it? Still, you've given us a lot of new information. The Fort Smith area is emerging as a nexus of activity between our mother's side (the Moores) and our father's side.

Was the newspaper article something you found online, or in a different way?

Yes, Mary was married to James Aaron Moore. After Mary was killed by James, Nellie went to live with her grandparents and the eldest child, Samuel, made his to Kansas and ended up working for Thompson, eventually marrying his daughter. Samuel is my paternal great grandfather. I guess that make us some type of cousin.

I have the newspaper articles about the tragedy in Ft Smith, OK. Samuel was there when it happened and relayed the story once to my grandmother. She wasn't sure it was true until I got a hold of the proof. This is likely why your family has been "foggy". I also found out where Mary is buried and also where James is buried. I also have a marriage bond and some other things.

Larry Humes is the one filled in some blanks for me. He responded to a post I put out years ago about the incident. I figured it was so strange that someone would eventually know something. A couple other people we extremely helpful as well, getting ahold of some materials and even going to the cemetery in Ft Smith where the murder occurred and took pictures for me.

I've been stuck tracing the Moore line back for several years now. I was able to get back to James' grandfather in southern OH in early 1800's. He suggested that I follow the Humes line back because families often migrated together. I didn't have much luck. If I remember correctly, his grandmother was another daughter, Mary Leona.

I just found a reply to something I posted in another thread. I don't recall seeing this before:

http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/ARJOHNSO/2005-...

I'm happy to share more info. I just need to dig it up. I've had this on the back burner for awhile.

brian at mooretimes dot com

I am looking for information on my ancestor Samuel Phillips. He married Margaret Humes in Pennsylvania. His son, Joseph, born in 1818, moved from Pennsylvania to Carroll County, IN sometime before 1843.

I have no birthdate, deathdate or parent info for Samuel Phillips and am hoping someone recognizes him! I have one paper that says he and Margaret came from Meadville, PA.

And I have heard there is a Phillipsburg, PA, but not sure if that's where he came from or not. Hoping to find the original Phillips immigrant.

Thanks!

On the Home page, go to the search link & at the bottom of that search page uncheck everything except family trees. Search Coleman Hume & then it will bring up all the trees who have Coleman in them. Then just look for my tree Our Family's Journey. If you can't find it this way, let me know.

Hello,
This is about the Farrah Cunningham I saw in Member Collections under your name. As yet, I do not belong to Ancestry so hope it's alright to write you here. I did post a query a few days ago in hopes you would see it. Farrah Cunningham was my Grandfather's daughter. Please read my first post.
Thanks,
Darleen

Farrah/Fairrah Cunningham Blood

Looking for information on Farrah Cunningham Blood. Born in Missouri, 1896. Farrah was the daughter of my grandfather William Cunningham. I last found her in Kansas City,Mo, 1920 census. She must have remarried after that as I can not find her on any census. She had a sister, Ruby, who married Arville Frank Redd. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Darleen
