Hi Mallory. I am your father's brother and your long lost Uncle Lonnie (or Len). I remember your father as a friendly and gregarious guy who loved to play golf and play cards. we were raised on a beautiful rural estate near Polo, Illinois. graduated from the same high school along with our sister, Debbie, and two other brothers, Steve & Butch [Leland, Jr.]
I also lived in Miami, Hialeah, and Miami Beach from 1975 til late 1979. your father died very young in a tragic car accident. I remember the sadness to this day. My parents never got over it. always kept a smiling picture of Curt dressed in full military uniform near their bed.
Last time I saw your father was at the funeral of our grandmother, Hazel, on our father's side. This was the Spring of 1987. He looked to be doing very well then.
It's nice to meet you. Hope you are doing well.
btw, to the best of my knowledge, your father's parents and ancestry is mostly from Germany, Poland, and eastern Europe.
I would be glad to write to you further. I am on facebook and here is my email: lenbenhear@yahoo.com
all kind regards, and God bless.
Len Hummel

Frank and Clara (Stump) Hummel were my Great Grandparents. My Grandfather was Clarence (1896-1953), who relocated from Darke Co. OH around 1930 to Henry Co. in Indiana.

I know the family tree goes Frank - Sebastian - Johannes son) - Johannes (father) to a villiage in Germany called Ulm in the 1700's.

I do not know much about Frank's siblings, but I have a lot of info on the Clarence Hummel family. I would be interested in knowing what info you have as well.

Please feel free to contact me via email

Obit of Mrs. Henry (Matilda Froebe) Hummel & Children 1897

From the Chatsworth Plaindealer
Chatsworth,Livingston,Illinois

MRS. HENRY HUMMEL & BABY
JULY 9, 1897

Death visited the home of Mr. Henry Hummel and family on Sunday, July 4, taking from those to whom they were dear, the wife and mother of the house hold and the youngest child, an infant of about four months.
Seldom does death cast such a universal feeling of surprise and sorrow as did the announcement of the great bereavement which Mr. Hummel and children have been called upon to suffer.
Matilda Froebe was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Froebe, for many years residents of this community and now living at Fair Oaks, California, and was thirty five years of age at the time of her death. She became the wife of Henry Hummel, and was a woman universally loved and respected by all who knew her. For a long time her health had been poor and her last illness, the mumps, brought her life to a close, as her feeble constitution could not withstand the effects of the disease. The same affliction also caused her infant babe to succomb.
The funeral services were held from the Germanville church on Tuesday afternoon, and the remains of both mother and child were laid to their final rest in the Germanville cemetery. The attendance at the last sad rites was large, many friends of the departed being present to pay their last tribute of respect. The bereaved husband and family have the deepest sympathy of the entire community in their irreparable loss and great sorrow.

HUMMEL CHILD
JULY 16, 1897

Mr. Henry Hummel and children are, it would seem, suffering more than their share of sorrow. On July 4 Mrs. Hummel and the youngest child were taken by the "grim reaper", and on Thursday last, July 8, Mr. Hummel's little three-year old son passed away from the effects of the mumps, the same malady that had caused the death of the other members of the family. The bereaved relatives have the deepest sympathy of the entire community.

The marriage register states his name was Hummel but most of my research shows it as Hammel. Also on the marriage record for the same day was a John G.
There was also a Georg Philip Hummel (went by Philip) who came over from Germany in 1743, settled in Windsor Twp, Berks County, PA, who died in 1758 in Exeter Twp, Berks County, PA. He had several children who were raised by a guardian in Oley Twp., Berks, PA.

I descend from his son Michael. I believe some of his descendents are in Maryland.

Kelker's "History of Dauphin County" (PA) indicates that (Johann) Frederick Hummel was born in Wurtenburg, Germany on 14 April 1726. A Hummel family researcher found a Friderick Hummel listed in a marriage record of 4 November 1721 in Evangelish, Fellback, Neckarkreis, Wurtenburg. According to this same researcher, Hummels also appear in Donaukreis and Schwartzwaldkreis church records in Wurtenburg. He married his first wife Rosina in Pfalz, Germany.
I hope this information is helpful. Please share any other Hummel information you may find in your travels!

I am just getting into this but I have in our family records of Johann Hummel born 1703 died 1743. It says he was born in Baden-Wuerttenberg, Germany. His wife was Emaline Hartman from Wuerttenberg, Germany. her birth was 1706 and died 1790 in Pennsylvania.

I am a 7th generation descendant of Johann Frederick Hummel. My father, grandparents, and great-grandparents lived in or around the Coshocton, OH area. My line is visible in Ancestry.com as Gilliam Karch Bell family. My Grandmother Karch was Martha Hummel prior to her marriage to my grandfather. Her father was Adam Hummel. Adam's father was Valentine Hummel. Valentine's father was David F. Hummel (married to Susan Kinkle). David F.'s father was David (married to Mary Toot). David's father was Johan Frederick (married to Rosina Kaufer). Johann's father was Isaac Hummel. I am trying to verify these connections if anyone has proof, please post.

From the 1896 Census, Souix City, IA and the 1910 Census, Perry, Plymouth, IA. From 1896, lists William H. Hammil 37 & Elmira 31 with children Esma 6, James B. 4, Horace 2, Elsie 0, & Mabel E. Larue 15 (my understanding is that Elmira was a Larue). From 1910, lists William H. Hommel 53, Elmira C. 46, Esma 20, Blain 18, Horace 17, Elsie 15, Grace (my grandmother) 13, Myron 10. From the 1920 Census, Cumberland, Barron Co., WI is lists William H. Hummel 63, Grace 20. William and Elmira (and my grandmother) are buried in Cumberland WI. In each case, different spellings of the same name but these have to be the same folks. I would assume the older children may have stayed in Iowa but I do not know. I'll touch base with my mother to see if she knows what happened to the rest of the kids. In the meantime, can you tell me what you know? Thx.

I recently found a military flag of remembrance in a consignment store in Salisbury NC for Merrill Foss Hummel (Feb 1 1886-May 13 1978). He was a 2nd LT in the US Army during WWI and I believe was a Lawyer in civilian life. I am certain he lived in Carlisle PA and had a wife Edna and a daughter Edna Raudabaugh. I would like to return this flag to the Hummel family and it is the reason I purchased it. If anyone is connected or knows the whereabouts of anyone in the family please contact me at ryken1976@gmail.com
Thanks,
Ryan Kennedy

Obit and Story of Jerome J. Hummel 1944

From the Chatsworth Plaindealer
Chatsworth,Livingston,Illinois

FRIENDS PAY TRIBUTE TO SGT. LOST IN COMBAT
MEMORIAL SERVICE HELD SUNDAY IN HIGH SCHOOL

SEPTEMBER 14, 1944

A memorial service held in the Chatsworth high school gym Sunday afternoon for T/Sgt. Jerome J. Hummel, killed while in the service of his country over France, June 19th, was largely attended and was a beautiful service.
There were more tha 200 people seated in the first floor and balcony of the gym as the hour approached at 3 o'clock for the solemn service.
A fine representation of the American Legion marched into the building with flag bearers Raymond Gerbracht and John Bouhl leading. The color guard was Leonard French, veteran of World War I and Sgt. William Turner, survivor of three major battles against the Japanese and home on furlough. Commander W. A. Kibler, of the Legion post, Rev. E.W. Crockett and members of the family of the late Sergeant Hummel followed. The post commander and the minister proceded to the stage. Mr. Kibler opened the service by reading several letters received by the mother of Sergeant Hummel from the government and from relatives of other men lost on the mission that ended in their death.
The Reverend Mr. Crockett offered prayer and read passages from the Bible, after which S/Sgt. and Mrs. Zell Don Shobe sang, "Precious Lord, Take My Hand," with Miss Sanders, of Rantoul, as accompanist; Mrs. E.W. Crockett, of Rantoul and Mrs. Fay Demarest, of Chatsworth, sang "What God Has Promised." with Miss Sanders as accompanist at the piano; and Tom Lawless, Buddy Herr, Frank Livingston and Junior Matthias sang, "Abide With Me." with Miss Mary Ann Rebholz as accompanist, and Miss Rebholz recited "In Flanders Fields."

HOW STRONG THE HOME FRONT
Rev. E.W. Crockett, of Rantoul, former pastor of Calvary church at which Sergeant Hummel worshipped, delivered a strong discourse, taking as his subject, "How Strong the Home Front." He stressed the fact that the service man's chief concern was for God, Home and Country and that we should see that the home front was kept strong while the men are bleeding and dying in far-off countries for us. He thought from close contact with service men at Rantoul service center and from reports from the battle fields that men were getting closer to God and pinning their faith on Him as never before. It was a timely address and nicly delivered.
At the close of the address Chaplain Alvin Brown, of the Legion, gave the benediction. L.J. Haberkorn blew the "Taps" with Tom Beck blowing the echo and the service was over

LETTER TELLS FATE OF ENTIRE CREW
T/Sgt. Hummel's mother has received letters from at least two -mother and wife- of the crew who were all lost. These letters, especially one from Mrs. Vivian H. McNiel, mother of the pilot, stated that it had been impossible to ascertain just what happened to the ship and its crew. "The entire crew of the 18th of June were reported missing and then killed. The fact that the German government reported the serial number of the B-24 Liberator, and the names and serical numbers of all crew members, leads all officers in the army air force headquarters in Washington to think that the plane was shot down or exploded, as no one had bailed out, all were together and it seems that death was instantaneous." Mrs. McNiel wrote. Her husband was an army air force officer, too, and died in 1935 and she is now employed in a government office in Washington.
Two of the original crew of the bomber shown in picture accompaning story were not on the fatal mission but two others, taking their places, were and were killed.
If you are still here, and still looking, I am a descendent of Jacob and Elizabeth Hummel. I have been researching and have uncovered much. Feel free to check out my tree Hummel/Strunk/Ganter/Obrian.

Insidently, Maria Elizabeth, Jacob's wife, was not a HERBINE. I have figure out that the Plow Cemetery record is incorrect. I have corroborating proof from both their marriage record, and her father's will abstract, that her maiden name is actually Hertz.

Plow Cemetery records also show that Jacob's parents were Michael and Mary (Ziegler) Hummel. I can't find them anywhere in PA, and according to PA census records Jacob was born in PA, so I am beginning to wonder if that's correct, too.

Please feel free to contact me.
