Parents of James Humphreys b. approx 1846 -1848 P. E. I.

James Humphreys married Alice Robinson in New Brunswick approx 1870 and they had several children in East Knowlesville, Aberdeen Parish, Carleton Co. NB in the 1870's. They later moved to Crystal Plantation, Aroostook, Maine and many of their children married and raised families in Maine including my Great Grandfather Rufus Albert Humphrey b. 1873 in NB. I am trying to identify the parents of James Humphrey(s). P.E.I. birth and census records are incomplete. Note that Humphrey is sometimes spelled with an s especially in the earlier records.

Re: Effie Rose/Marshall (Pennsylvania, Michigan, California)

The 1940 census will not have any further clarification on this issue as Marion Humphrey's parents had already passed.

As to your other questions:

Marion Humphrey was born in California, so Effa and Edward J Humphrey were in California as of 1910.
I found a 1900 census record for Edward and Eva Humphrey in 1900, matching DOBs and marriage date, where they were living in Chicago, IL.

Upon further review of census records, I discovered that earlier records showing Effie Marshall do not match Samuel and Sarah Marshall as her parents. Therefore, according to records with Charles and Effa Rose:

1880 Effie Rose with Charles and Effa Rose in Bay City, MI
1870 Effie Rose with Charles and Effie Rose in Erie, PA

Effie Marshall and Edward J Humphrey married in Muskegon, MI in 1887

Further census records show Charles and Effie Rose in Muskegon, MI in 1900

All indications point to Effie being the child of Charles and Effie Rose. You had mentioned she may have lied about her age to get married. The marriage record showing her DOB as 1868 matches earlier census records. It is the later census records, i.e., 1910 and forward that indicate her DOB is 1872 based on her age.

Effie Rose/Marshall (Pennsylvania, Michigan, California)

I'm trying to locate more information about my grandmother, Marion Humphrey, and I've run across some discrepancies.

According to a 1920 census, her mother is listed as Effa Humphrey, 48.
According to a 1910 census, her mother is listed as Effie Humphrey, 38 with father Edward J. Humphrey, 41
All of that matches up.

The problem I've run into is the marriage record. What I was able to find was that Effie S. Marshall (who is listed as the maiden name in the 1910 census) and Edward J Humphrey married on October 13, 1887. If this is the correct marriage record, according to the 1910/1920 records, Effie should be 15 and Edward, 20. However, that does not match up with the marriage record. Instead, it shows Effie as being 19 and Edward, 26.

It could very well be these are different people. Where I'm stumped though, is Effa is listed as born in PA on the census record and on the marriage record. Edward J is listed as born in MI on the census record and on the marriage record.

I wonder if Effie was adopted? The marriage record shows her as a Marshall. I've found previous census records (1870 & 1880) showing Effie as a Marshall. Both attest to her DOB being 1868. But, I also found Effa Rose in an 1880 census showing a DOB of 1868.

I can't find any marriage record showing Edward J Humphrey marrying a Effie Rose. However, as Charles and Effie Rose are listed as in-laws to Edward in the 1910 census, I wonder if the Roses were her biological parents and the Marshalls were her adoptive parents?

One thing that continues to confuse me is the DOB.... as marriage and earlier census records show Effie Marshall/Rose being born in 1868 but later census records (i.e., 1910, 1920) show Effie being born in 1872. Effa's Mom, Effa Rose's DOB according to the 1910 census doesn't match with the 1880 census either.

I do know that Effie and Edward J Humphrey were my grandmother's parents as they are named in her marriage announcement.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I’m not related to any member of this family.

1930 is the last available searchable census at this time.

1940 census has been released but it will take several months before the transcription is completed.

I Effie was "under age" AND her parents would not give permission for her to marry it's possible that she lied abt her age.

WHEN & where did this family live in MICH.????

WHEN & where did this family live in PA.????

WHEN & where did this family live in Calif.????

WHEN & WHERE was Marion Humphrey born???

John C Humphrey / Emma (Carter) Humphrey, Trevorton, PA

I am researching my Humphrey ancestors of Trevorton, Northumberland County, PA. John C Humphrey was born 12 Dec 1835 in Massachusetts, and died 3 Sept 1908. Emma (Carter) Humphrey was born 1840 in Wales, dying sometime between 1873 and 1880 in Trevorton. Humphrey seems to be a very common surname in Massachusetts, but so far no clues to as to John's parents; the town he was born in, or when or where they were married. Their youngest son George R Humphrey was born in 1873, with the last known location as Mount Carmel, PA.

I am trying to find the family of my gggrandfather, William Humphrey. He was born in 1827, possibly in Robeson County, died in 1897 in Marion County, SC. He married Elva Ann Elvington, daughter of Appie Elvington (who was married to Eli Scott.) My grandmother told me back in the 70s that he either was born or at some time lived in the Humphrey-Smith-Williams plantation in Robeson County. he died 3 years before she was born, but she remembered visiting someone in the house there. her younger sister (by 18 years) is still living and told me she also remembers going there with her mother to visit someone. It had something to do with an "Uncle Jim." I can find no record of this William Humphrey prior to 1850 when the census shows him living with Jesse Scott and Emily Humphrey Scott (his sister?) I think there must be a connection to the Robeson County family that lived in that house, even if indirectly. If anyone can shed some light on this man, I would deeply appreciate it!

I've had a chance to reread this a few times. This is not the same Phillip Jenkins but it is another branch. I am thoroughly convinced Adeline Jenkins is the daughter of Phillip Jenkins and Elizabeth Thacker. Phillip married Catherine Humphrey after the death of his first wife. Adeline Jenkins Humphrey lists Phillip Jenkins on death certificate as father. Anderson and Adeline Humphrey are always living with Phillip and Catherine nearby. Phillip Jenkins line can be proven back to Phillidelphia and I am beginning to suspect Humphrey goes back there too although Anderson and Merrit Humphrey are showing up in Albermarle, Virginia.

Marion Humphrey Webb

I am searching for any genealogy related to Marion. She was born on February 16, 1911 and passed in 1993. She married Warren Webb some time after 1932. They had three sons: James, Martin (Marty), and Bruce. Both Martin and Bruce have passed. James' whereabouts are unknown.

Marty is my father, and I have one older sister, Jennifer.

This is what I'm looking for: I've found discrepancies in Marion's parents information. What I was able to find was that Effie S. Marshall and Edward J Humphrey married on October 13, 1887. According to the 1910/1920/1930 records, Effie should be 15 and Edward, 18. In addition, Effie's parents, Charlie P and Effie J Rose, are listed on the 1910 census as living with Effie and Edward; but those aren't the names of Effie as listed on the marriage record.

Finally, the trail runs dry after 1930. Marion's husband, Warren Edward Webb, graduated from UC Berkeley in 1932. My uncle Jim was born in 1940 (location unknown), and my dad Martin was born in 1943 (Virginia). At some point, they moved from California to Virginia and then returned to California, where I was born and where my grandma lived until her death in 1993. Marion's husband, Warren, passed in the late 70s; I don't have an exact date.

Thank you.
Barbara, I recently discovered that Wm. J. Hill, wife Eliza, and daughter Ann were buried in the W. W. Humphrey Cemetery. Although I know he was in Richlands in 1850, cannot find name of his father. Any info would be appreciated. His son, George T. Hill moved to Montbrook, FL. Found his sister, Laura's grave there. Headstone said Laura "Humphries". She and three young children were only ones buried in a "plot" there. Don't know if this will help, but there may be a Hill/Humphrey connection.

My grandfather, Wiley Delois Humphrey who's father, Harley Humphrey are both from Anderson County where they have a long lineage. I too have been researching my line for sometime now and have heard an eerily similar story to the one you tell. I was also told that my grandfather lived with his grandfather. My grandfathers mother is Agnes (Humphrey) Wilkerson. I would really, really like to talk with you about this, so please reply. Thanks, hope this helps. I have constructed a line frome my grandparents at MyHeritage.com ... hope to hear from you soon.
I have stumbled upon a source that takes the lineage back to Ireland, which is quite expansive. I hope to solidify the findings with yours.

Re: MARION HUMPHREY

Hi, I just your message on Marion Humphrey. Can you tell me about his son Arch Humphrey and his second wife Iona Tharp. Iona was from Mammoth Springs Ark also but they were married in Henryetta area. I found Arch Humphrey's burial place but can find nothing on Iona Tharp. Do you know anything about her? I was also surprised to know that Marion was buried at Shiloh. I had a survey and they were not on it so I did not look for them when I recently visited the Cemetery.
