Robert Humphries of Surry Co., VA d. ca. 1714

Evan Humphries who lived in Surry Co. Virginia in the late 1600s is thought to be the father of John Humphries who died in Brunswick Co., VA in 1738. John left a wife and at least five sons and probably some daughters. There is no direct evidence of a connection between Evan and John, but it seems likely for various reasons outlined in Brent Holcomb's 1985 book "Ancestors and Descendants of Charles Humphries d. 1837 of Union District, South Carolina, 1677-1984."

Evan is also supposed to have had a son named Robert, who appeared with Evan as a tithable in Surry Co. in 1703.

Evan Humphries disappeared from the Surry Co., VA records about 1710. A Robert Humphries died about 1714 in Surry Co. He died intestate so there is no will and his wife Mary administered his estate. This Robert is probably Evan's son.

Is there anyone who thinks he or she is descended from this Robert? There is another Robert who appears later in Brunswick Co. VA (the same county where John Humphries made his will in 1738). Could he be the first Robert's son?

There is also a Griffin Humphries who appears in the area and a Daniel Humphries. It is said that Daniel was the son of William Humphries who was listed in the will of John Humphries in 1738, but there is no evidence linking William and Daniel and there is evidence that contradicts the conclusion that Daniel was William's son.

Y-DNA testing has been conducted matching descendants of John Humphries's two sons William and Charles. If there are any all-male-line descendants of Robert Humphries of Surry Co., VA, or of Robert Humphries of Brunswick Co., VA, it would be interesting to see if their Y-DNA signatures match those of John's descendants.

Hope to hear from someone.

Charlene

I was in the Wiltshire archives on Friday to check a character reference given Robert Pictor for one of his newly married quarrymen who was about to rent a cottage at Travellers Rest in 1874. Late April is rapidly approaching, do you still plan to visit England? - the builders are still in my house at Box but should be finished in a few weeks I am very much looking forward to meeting you - my email is:- david@seend.free-online.co.uk

I have plente information on William Humphries. Just contact me. I may have a picture. By the way Kate Tyree Humphries had a twin sister named Sallie. I have pictures of both of them. I also have a picture of just Kate. Her father was John Bull Tyree. My grandfather was Melvin Humphries. I remember my father speaking of his Aunt Bettie. When my mother and I first researched our tree, he spoke of taking his Aunt Bettie and Aunt Pearl to different cemeteries to get dates from tombstones years before.

Thank you,
Susan

Hello again,so nice to learn more about the Pictors and also about Box tunnel.Mother used to talk about it and say how when she was a child and visiting Pickwick she and a friend would find the vents from the tunnell,I think that was how she described it.I too have wondered how Job went from being a worker to an owner of a quarry, from parish records it would seem that his father,Thomas was a workman and not wealthy. After Job and Mary Fluester were married,in the 1841 census,an Edward Fluester was living with Job and Mary, perhaps there was some money in that family. All the Pictor men seemed to have died young,Job,Robert and also my grandfather,Vernon Samuel Pictor,my grand parents were first cousins.Thank you for all the information,Mary and I will be in touch and both looking for our records.

Thank you both for your messages, William Jones Brewer together with Thomas Lewis of Bath dug the eastern part of Box Tunnel i.e. the length through the Bath stone. Job Pictor built the eastern portal. At that time (1841) Brewer had Box Fields Quarry, Brewer and Job Pictor went into partnership, they supplied stone for Swindon station and the embryonic railway works. Their partnership was dissolved in 1843, later in the 40s Job Pictor seems to have Box Fields Quarry which was just about worked out then. I suspect it was needed to access Job Pictor's new Tyning Quarry without the expense of sinking a new shaft, they bought the freehold around 1856-57. That is a brief outline, pieced together from many different sources, I am keen as mustard to see the original c1847 book because it will provide answers to many questions. Since my last message have learned that the Pictors played a key role in setting up Box Cricket Club.

My name is Rachel Hough,I have just talked to my half-sister,Laelia and then I saw the messages on ancestry.Laelia and I had the same mother,Lealia Pictor. We both have a lot of information about the Pictors and we will both be looking for it. I have the book"Out of the Rock",do you have that one? There is a mention of a Mr.Brewer of Box,you were asking about him?My daughter and I were in England in Oct.this year and we went to Fogleigh and Rudloe house, another time my late husband and I visited both places and for a few years I wrote to the lady who lived at Rudloe. When my husband and I were in California in the 70's we went to Sierra Madre and saw some of the houses the Humphries had livedf in. Aunt Kitty used to send us cards and parcels when I was a child and once I met two of the cousins,I think Wilfred was one and a woman when they came to Vancouver.I just got back from LA but I was with my family and we didn't have time to go to Sierra Madre.I am very interested in the Pictor family as is Laelia.I hope we can all give each other some useful information.I am 84 and slowing down a bit with the family history but I started in 1983 and have traveled a lot to get information.Good luck with your search,Rachel

Sorry for not replying quicker but i have basic look at the 1901 census and it shows there is a "sarah humphreys" born in 1869 but i was wondering what relationship she has to Thomas

"Hi Paul,

Could it be that Alice was on a second marriage? How do you know she
was Alice OSBOURNE?

Having played with some permutations I think you are going to have to
send for a certificate.

I have found the family in 1901. The name was spelt HUMPHREYS, and the
wife is Alice R., with sons, Fred and Albert E. It's likely that the
enumerator took a verbal on the doorstep and spelt it the usual way. I
note that Thomas can write, although probably not often. See /RG13/;
Piece: /2856/; Folio: /94/; Page: /27/. Deritend, Aston.

Cheers

Mike"
Thank you for such a quick response, my name is David Pollard, if you type that together with "quarry" into your Google search engine, something about me should come up. I set up the Bath Stone Quarry Museum [charitable] Trust in 1984 and own Hartham Park underground Quarry at Pickwick, Corsham. I will be moving to Box High Street in April or May (when the builders finish) perhaps we could meet when you visit the UK. My email is:- david@seend.free-online.co.uk
Fogleigh House was the home of Cornelius James Pictor, the Rudloe Hotel was the home of Herbert Robert Newman Pictor, he lost it in 1908 when he had the great misfortune to be bankrupted. I am very interested in the details of how Job Pictor made the transition from mason and builder to quarrymaster and farmer, after Job died Mary and Robert ran the business until the other sons came of age and could enter the Pictor & Sons partnership. I would love to know what the 1847 book says, does it mention the Brewer family?

I'm trying to find out about a great uncle called Albert Edward Richard Humphries b.1911 in Wandsworth,Surrey.
The family called him 'Sonny',I believe he also served in the Coldstream Guards in the 1930's/40's.I think he then went to Australia.
I believe that he got married and had children, apart from that my knowledge is limited.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am looking for any info on the above family. Ethel Arnsby married Claude John M Humphries in 1926 Croydon Surrey. They had two children Eric in 1927 and Jean in 1929. Jean I know got married around the early 50's to a guy in the Military. They of course are probably passed on but if they had any children maybe they might know or are doing their family tree
Heres hoping
sandie Australia

I am descended from a Humphrey, or Humphries, branch who lived at Southwark, which was then in Surrey UK, in the 1800s and it's possible that some of their descendants may have moved further away. Some of them spelled their surname/s differently and the surname has various spellings in the records. Certainly some family members moved to Lymington in Hampshire and I'm trying to trace this prolific family who married into a family named Bishop.
I'm happy to share all my research and I would appreciate any information on the ancestors, relatives or descendants
wessexpensioners@yahoo.co.uk

All in the same family? Well, I have an aunt who declares "there never been a HUMP in this family!" and I have a grandmother who pronounced it HUMP every time. It is the silent and not-silent H that is key to the various spellings. Then add misunderstanding of the pronunciation (hearing a P or an M, etc) instead of an H or a U and the list gets longer. The HumphRIES vs HumphREYS doubles the list.Lose the S and it doubles again. Now consider Humphress and Umphress. RichGpa just gave me another spelling...60 is a conservative estimate. Thank goodness for Soundex!

You sure have a lot of Humphries !! This group dates ancestors to mid 1700's in Rich Patch, Va (near Covington). Possible connections to Uriah (who later went South to have more children ..) and also to the St Stephen's Parrish (circa 1720's group) have been presented. Direct line male dna testing would help us all figure out more. has any of your relatives had that done?

Mike H

Was the Inglish in the Spindletop issue kin to the Inglish that built the Fort in Bonham, Fort Inglish? Could the Wm Inglish have had a wife name Hannah? According to the Houston Chronicle 2-26-1989 Wm. Humphreys traded the Jefferson Co. land to a cousin, Wm. Inglish or English for a horse. Any lineage that connects the Wm Inglish to the Inglish from the Miller County Territory would be helpful.

Mike,

If I were you, I would try to contact some of the other people who match your Y-DNA profile. The John Humphries line of Northumberland Co. VA has a pretty good paper trail. There is a branch of this family that I call the "Uriah" line as John Humphries of Northumberland Co. had a descendant named Uriah who went into Georgia and was a very colorful character there. Uriah's descendants in Georgia are sometimes found living close to descendants of other, unrelated Humphries families. Maybe some people who are working on the John of Northumberland line can figure out where you might connect to them. The Northumberland Humphries are definitely NOT related to the Humphries who are descended from John Humphries d. 1738 Brunswick Co. VA m. to Mary White, whose father may be Evan Humphries of Surry Co., VA. As a matter of fact, there now seem to be at least half a dozen Humphries lineages in the American South alone that are not biologically related in any way. Humphries is a popular name in Wales, and I think Evan Humphries of Surry Co. VA probably did come from there, but it seems likely that some of the other Humphries could have came from Ireland, Scotland or England. Whether there was a "diaspora" of Humphries that originally came from Wales (but then various lineages should match on Y-DNA testing) or if the name just means something that used to be a common phrase ("good fellow" or something of the like in some lost Teutonic or Celtic language) so that unrelated people assumed it, I do not know. There are some people who believe they know the origin of the Northumberland group--they may easily not be Welsh but perhaps Scottish (or Scots-Irish). It is clear though, at this point, that people with the last name of Humphries should not assume they are biologically related in any way, at least through that line.

Charlene

Hi Again,

I think a Land Agent could be either an Estate Agent (in today's English terms, auctioning land) or an estate manager who ensured the owner's land was farmed and managed in a profitable way. Potentially a man with quite a lot of power, so quite respectable, though not necessarily liked by the tenant farmers and labourers.

If you are using Ancestry for census details, don't forget to switch to the Welsh census from the default English. I don't know about other suppliers.

I've had a quick look and there seem plenty to go at. Also FreeBMD carries Welsh data from 1837. It uses a different search engine to Ancestry and formats the results differently.

Mike

Many thanks for reply.
The only thing I know is that my husbands grandfather was born in Cearnarvon Wales this comes from the 1981 and 1911 census's. on the 1891 census he is down as being born in Salford which is wrong. He was an iron worker by trade. on his marraige cert. his father is down as a land agent deceased.
As I don't know what duties a land agent did in the 1800's
I don't know where to go next!
