Speaking of the Hunsicker name and the Milwaukee library - there are about 50 Hunsicker entries in the index of German newspapers culled from the collection at that library.

Unfortunately they won't allow the ongoing project to be available to the public on a terminal there so I made it available at the Salzmann Library in suburban St. Francis.

Contact me directly for look-ups. Indexing started there in 2007, and will continue beyond 2011.

Gary Rebholz
Milwaukee Wis.
gary.rebholz@gmail.com

"Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" 1844-1950.

Re: Johannes Hunsicker

Jane, I believe they were likely related (cousins?), but I cannot prove a direct, validated connection back from Christian Hunsicker (Philip (III)'s father, Johannes' grandfather). I believe Christian was born about 1746 in Frederickburg, PA. He died abt 1810 and was buried at Walmer's Church, Lebanon County, PA.

Notes - There were at least five, maybe six, Christian Hunsickers alive during the late 1700s in (and around) Lebanon PA. We believe they were all closely related (uncles, cousins, etc.), but have not found clear links between all of them. Based on the various Wills of an older Christian Hunsicker, his brother Samuel Hunsicker, and also of Samuel's son Christian, it appears that our Christian Hunsicker (Philips father) was most likely the son of Rudolph Huntzaker. His uncle Christian (Rudolph's brother) and another uncle, Samuel, owned land to the east of Lebanon and adjacent to each other. That Christian and his brother Samuel both named one of their male children "Christian" and to add to the confusion each of those sons married a lady named "Barbara." However, both Samuel and his brother, the elder Christian Hunsicker, left Wills which identify their respective wives and children proving my ancestor named Christian was not one of their children. A verifying item, a plot for the land that Samuel left his son named Christian, can be found at the Lebanon County Historical Society. That son's Will can also be found in the Lebanon County Court House (No. H-71). In it, Christian, (Samuel's son) identified his wife (Barbara) and his three children (Jacob, Molly, and Catherine). A second item which eliminates that son from being our Christian is that he would have been 9 years old in 1781, too young to serve in the military, while his father, Christian, would have been a plantation owner, over 40, with a wife and several children -- and therefore also unlikely to have served. A fourth Christian Hunsicker was born Mar 26, 1776, was married to Anna Newcomer, died Aug 5, 1857 and was buried in the Union Cemetery. He would have been about 5 years old in 1781.

-----------
Our Christian served in the military in 1781/2 in Lancaster County, PA. The Pennsylvania Archives shows our Christian was recruited as a private in Captain Casper Stoever's Company, 3rd Company, 2nd Bm, Lancaster County Militia in Bethel township, Lancaster County. He was buried about 1810 in Walmer's Church, Lebanon County, PA. Christian appeared in the census in 1810 in Dauphlin, East Hanover, PA. The 1810 census shows 1 male under 10 (Jacob?); 1 male, 16-25 (Philip?), 1 male 45 or over (Christian); 1 female, 16-25 (Elizabeth?), and 1 female 45 or over (Barbara?) He lived in Hamlin, Lebanon County, PA. It should be noted that the linkage from Philip Hunsicker III through Christian to Rudolph jr. is by far the weakest link in my entire genealogy. It is based on a reference found in the books Emigrants, Refugees and Prisoners, Vol. I, Vol. II, Vol. III by Richard Warren Davis, some known dates, several other genealogies found on the web and some discussion with other Hunsicker descendants. As such it provides a starting point for additional research, but should not be construed as any form of solid evidence at this time. There is much conflicting information about who was Christian's father and how many children Rudolph had and which Rudolph had them. In addition, there is an open question as to why Phillip is identified as a third.

Main references are our own research in and around Spenser ID and Lebanon, PA. (2000-2001) plus
1. A. L. Emily (worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com).
2. Helen Shaw, History of the Hunsicker Family extracted from various PA and IN church and census records and from the "Matthias Frautz Family" history. (Owen County Public Library, in Spenser Indiana. The documents were placed there by a Mrs Helen L. Shaw of Terre Haute, Ind.).
3.
I know the family came to Philadelphia in Sept 1731, Johannes (John) settled in Northumberland County (penna)....later to become Lehigh Cty, Valentine and wife Elisabeth settled in Skippack, Perkiomen Twp, Montomery County where they farmed and multiplied. The originally came from AAgau Canton in Switzerland then moved for several generations to Alsace because of the upheaval of the 30 years war. They were protestants specifically Mennonites (Anabaptists in Europe), The Mennonite Heritage Center in Montgomery County can give you a lot of 18th century data on this well known family.
steve benson email sbenson@mstarproperties.com

While researching for the Wikipedia entry, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otto_Frederick_Hunziker, I found the following persons with related surnames listed in Purdue yearbooks.

1905 Debris (Purdue University yearbook, Vol 17)
http://e-archives.lib.purdue.edu/u?/debris,9618
Page 111
Samuel Madison Hunsicker, "Sam," Mulberry, Ind.
B. S. in M. E.
Thesis—Tests of a Rider Hot Air Pumping Engine Under Varying Discharge Head.
"Sam" has shot hot air so much around the University that it has become a specialty of his, and so he has pursued his favorite line of work, as can be seen from his above Thesis. He is another one of "Jimmie's" prodigies, having succeeded in working a graft early in his Junior year.
(photo of Hunsicker)

1906 Debris, Vol 18
Page 322
http://e-archives.lib.purdue.edu/u?/debris,9393
C. "Hun."
B.S. in M.E. ΑΤΩ. Athletic Association (1) (3) (4).
"Hun" is of the quiet, gentlemanly variety, always unruffled and dignified, when under the possible eye of a prof. But once out with the boys, he is one of the best of "good fellows." During the past year he has added Ladies' Hall to his regular calling list. But in spite of such a handicap, he is finishing strong, right with bunch.
Entry has photo
P. 305
C. R. (4).
"Hunz" has a formidable way of making you believe his fund of information was the only correct and complete set extant, but on closer investigation he is found to be quite harmless. During his Freshman year he learned to make one cope answer for four patterns and this characteristic followed him through college. If he can't find an easy snap he will likely make one, for his originality has never been known to fail him.

I have very little on him or his wife, Maria. My source on Jacob is the will of Henry Gerber, Maria's father, her father was Henry Gerber 1769-1835 and mother was Maria Magdelena Dietrich abt 1774- . I have is dates at about 1812- abt 1882 but no source for that so I can't swear to it. I don't have any children listed since they are a collateral line for me.

Jeff

Re: Franklin Hunsicker born 1874 Kansas

My Grandparents are Honsicker. I am told the name was originally Hunsicker. They are also from Kansas. I would say it is a relation. Grandpa is from Arma Kansas, He did talk alot about Ft Scott. So, Arma Kansas may be a good place to look. I have tried to find info, but I see the Honsicker name is not popular. They have few if any living relitives in the Pittsburg Ks area, that may also be a good place to look. I have a tape Grandpa made about some of his family. People wanted him to write a book, and wish he did, he knew so much about the family. His mothers maiden name was Goodwin. I do not know when the name spelling changed, Grandma said they did it because it is German. Grandma is still living, she is 93. She dont remeber those things. I haope this helps. Girard Kansas is also a good place to look. I dont know if you are close enough to go to the courthouse and look through deed records, you may find some good info. Grandpa talked alot about the Goodwins, but very little about Honsicker side. He talked of the Dalton Gang, which his Grandpa Goodwin was a marshal and was there when they was caught in Coffeville. Good luck, I hope this helps. You are welcome to email me at, addington73@hotmail.com

Some Descendants of Johannes Hunsicker (1722-1800)

Casper Hunsicker, born about 1759, s/o Johannes Hunsicker, was not married to Susanna Best. Casper, s/o Johannes was married to a Margaretha ___. Casper (Sr.) died before 1819 some time. It was their son Casper Jr., born 23 Aug 1786, died in 1847, who was married to Susanna Best. The Anniversary History of Lehigh County PA published in 1914 is the source of this often repeated error. On pages 594 and 600 of the Hunsicker Family article you can see paragraphs discussing Casper (Sr.) and Casper (Jr.). On page 594 they incorrectly list the wife of Casper (Sr.) as being Susanna Best. In addition the two children of Casper (Jr.), Stephen and Maricha, are wrongly repeated there on page 594 as being the chidren of Casper (Sr.) too. That is not correct. Casper Hunsicker (Jr.) is correctly reported as being married to Susanna Best on page 600 of the same article, with two children, Stephen and Maricha. Some people try to reconcile this confusing information by giving Susanna Best an additional given name, i.e., Suanna Margaretha Best. That is wrong too. From my research she was only Susanna Best and was married to Casper (Jr.), not Casper (Sr.). If one studies the local church baptism records and cemetery records, estate records in the Lehigh Co PA courthouse in Allentown PA, the census records for the periods, and carefully reads the two paragraphs on page 594 and 600 respectively in the county history, one can see that the information on page 594 as to the name of the wife of Casper (Sr.) is not Susanna Best, and Stephen and Maricha were not the children of Casper (Sr.). Also see PA Births Lehigh Co, Humphrey, pub. 1992.

See this webpage for more information and details:
http://www.kerchner.com/des1671.htm

Charles
http://www.kerchner.com/contact.htm

I have some information on a William Hunsicker. He died in Wausau, WI. Did the person you are looking for live in Wausau too? His wife's name is recorded several ways--Emilie, Amilia, and Amelia. I do not have the same children as you though.

William had two brothers who lived here too--Ernst Carl and Herman Wilhelm Julius.

I can check in the Wood County records if you'd like. Let me know. I have a few more days before school starts and could go there for information.

Susie

Susan,

Sometime ago I found then lost a connection that showed Valentine Hunsicker's family going back to Johannes Hunziker in 1485. In the 1600s in Switzerland, Mechior Hunziker changed his surname to Hunsicker. Do you have any information about this? I'd love to know if there is documentation showing this name change. I believe the connection was thru a family tree or message board by the name of Zelner. Being fairly new at this tracing business, I didn't write down the path, and couldn't find it again.

A member of our DAR Chapter in Colorado passed away some time ago. She had no family, no relatives. I am in possession of her genealogical reseach for Hunsicker, etc. It is quite a collection, but with no real value to anyone outside of these family lines. I do not want to destroy her research. I am looking for someone to give this information to that might be interested so that her work can be of some use to another researcher. Anyone interested, please contact me at kimmerdav@msn.com. All that I ask is payment for shipping.
