Simon HUNTINGTON; Norwich, England > New England in 1633

GENEALOGICAL and PERSONAL MEMOIRS
Relating to the Families of Boston and Eastern Massachusetts
Prepared under the editorial supervision of William Richard CUTTER, A. M.
Historian of the New England Historic Genealogical Society; Librarian of Woburn Public Library; Author of “The Cutter Family,” “History of Arlington,” “Bibliography of Woburn,” etc., etc.
Volume I.; Illustrated
New York; Lewis Historical Publishing Company; 1908
Pages 109 - 110

HUNTINGTON

Simon Huntington, with his wife, who before marriage was Margaret Baret, of Norwich, England, and his three sons -- William Simon and Samuel -- sailed for New England in 1633. He died of small pox during the passage and his family probably landed in Boston. The earliest reference to them on this side of the ocean is found in the records of the First Church in Roxbury, Massachusetts, wherein is an entry in the hand-writing of the Rev. John Eliot as follows: "Margaret Huntington, widow, came in 1633. Her husband died by the way of small pox. She brought _______ children with her." It is quite probable that she was again married, in 1635-6, to Thomas Stoughton, then of Dorchester, and removed to Windsor, Connecticut.

(II) William probably eldest son of Simon and Margaret (Baret) Huntington, was of Salisbury, Massachusetts, in 1640, and later lived in Amesbury. He appears to have been quite prominent in both places, owning considerable real estate, and died in Amesbury in 1689. He married Joanna, daughter of John Bayley, who went from Salisbury to Newbury in 1650. John Bayley was a passenger on the "Angel Gabriel," which was wrecked on the coast of Maine, having on board a considerable number of emigrants who found their way to the settlements in Massachusetts. William Huntington was father of John, James and Mary.

(III) John, eldest child of William and Joanna (Bayley) Huntington, born in Amesbury, August, 1643, died there about 1727. He married Elizabeth Hunt; children: Hannah, died young; Mary, Elizabeth, Hannah, Sarah, Susannah, William, Samuel and Deborah.

(IV) William, seventh child and eldest son of John and Elizabeth (Hunt) Huntington, was lifelong resident of Amesbury, Massachusetts. He married Mary Goodwin, January 27, 1708-09, and he probably was the same William Huntington who was married the second time, December 19, 1725, to Mary Colby, a widow. He was executor of his father's will. Children, all born in Amesbury: John, Lydia, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth, Deborah, William, Timothy and Judith.

(V) John, eldest son and child of William and Mary (Goodwin) Huntington, was born in Amesbury, January 5, 1709-10. He lived on the old homestead of his grandfather. His wife, Abigail Jones, was a member of the Society of Friends, and their children, some of whom married with members of their sect, were John, Mary, Merriam, Susannah, William, Sarah and Elizabeth.

(VI) John, eldest child of John and Abigail (Jones) Huntington, was born in Amesbury, August 15, 1737. He married Hannah Wood; children: Jacob, Benjamin, Moses, John, Hannah, Mary, Abigail, Daniel, Sarah and Judith.

(VII) Benjamin, second child of John and Hannah (Wood) Huntington, was born in Amesbury, April 24, 1760. In early manhood he went to Weare, New Hampshire, and purchased one hundred acres of land lying about a mile west of Clifton Grove, which is still known as the old Huntington farm, and he resided there for the remainder of his life. He also bought land in Henniker. He married Elizabeth Buxton; children: Hannah, born December 13, 1781; married Jonathan Purington, of Lincoln, Vermont; Jacob, born September 3, 1783; Sarah, born October 9, 1785, married Robert Gove, of Deering, New Hampshire; Betsey, born February 14, 1788, married Timothy Matthews; Thomas, born February 20, 1791, married Anna Johnson; Anna, born late in 1791, married Daniel Buxton; Lydia, died young; John, born August 5, 1797, married Peace Purington; Benjamin, born October 17, 1799, married Sally Buxton, and married second, Mary A. Beard.

(VIII) Jacob, second child and eldest son of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Buxton) Huntington, was born September 3, 1783. At the age of nineteen years he went to live upon a tract of land containing one hundred acres, owned by his father, and after purchasing it in small lots he enlarged the property by the addition of adjoining land, leaving at his death, which occurred July 15, 1857, a good farm of one hundred sixty acres. He was noted for his physical strength and power of endurance, also as a staunch Whig and a leader in the anti-slavery movement, which latter was prompted by his belief in the Quaker doctrine, and he was instrumental in establishing the Friends' Meeting at what is known as the Friends' Settlement in Henniker. He married, May 4, 1809, Huldah Gove, of Weare, died October 20, 1819; married, second, February 1, 1823, Mehitable Hedding, died March 4, 1827. In October, 1829, he married third, Lavinia B., daughter of Theophilus Breed, of Lynn, Massachusetts; she died October 3, 1859. He had eight children, four born of his first marriage, and four of the second: Elijah Brown, born June 15, 1811; Elizabeth, born March 29, 1813, married Jacob Huntington, probably a relative, and died September 16, 1838; Sarah G., born May 31, 1815, died June 15, 1834; Robert G., born May 21, 1817, died October 22, 1819; Franklin Theophilus, born August 21, 1830; Hulda G., born March 23, 1834, married Joshua Buxton, died in 1906; a son, born July 25, 1838, died September 27, 1838; Joseph John, born March 16, 1840, married Mary T. Gordon and had Henry, Alice and Arthur Gordon.

(IX) Hulda Gove Huntington, daughter of Jacob and Lavinia B. (Breed) Huntington, born March 23, 1834, in Henniker, New Hampshire, died March 22, 1906, in Peabody, Massachusetts. She married Joshua Buxton (see Buxton family); two children: Horace Francis Buxton, born in Peabody, March 1, 1858; and Henry Herbert Buxton, born in Peabody, April 13, 1869.
Dont know if anyone can assist me but I am trying to find a Gilbert Huntington who had a son called Daniel Huntington who married Elizabeth Anna Beckman in 1912. I have the marriage registered in West Derby but I believe that Gilbert may have lived in Lancaster. I have a Gilbert on the 1901 and 1911 census as a lodger in Lancaster but no family details. The two gilbert's though have different dates of births. Can anyone help me find the family or offer any further information. Thanks all.

Or perhaps the Lydia Huntington born 31 Dec 1771 in Middletown Conn to that relative Rev Enoch Huntington wife Mary - would have known cousin Enoch as a child who died in Preston and was close to them?
The US Int'l Marriage index ref Lydia b.1771 in CT married a William Groat.
This 1771 birthdate for Lydia would be more in line with the events?

Okay - still looking but just a hunch here, have the records for Preston Conn been checked for Lydia's birth around 1760-1771...reason I ask is it possible she is the daughter of Andrew Huntington; who's son (Lydia had a brother) Enoch who died 4 yrs of age:
http://search.ancestry.ca/iexec/?htx=View&r=5543&dbi...
named from his uncle and died in Preston for which she might have named her own son?
Far-fetched but just thinking outloud : )

Thank you Mary F. For my part of the family, the connection must be through a Lydia Huntington, who we supposed was Amy and Simon's daughter, but we have not been able to substantiate it. Lydia Huntington's birth, marriage, and death records remain unfound. We do know she was William Groat's wife.

There is a birth record for Elizabeth Huntington, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth, born 17 April 1695 in Windham, CT. I found it in the Connecticut Town Vital Records on Ancestry. From that same record I found Elizabeth's siblings Ruth, Eleazer, Lidia, and possibly Simon, although I cannot refind Simon and he is the one I am after because he was supposed to have married Amy Standish in Mansfield, Tolland, CT. I cannot confirm either his birth or Amy Standish's. Those CT records are wonderful, but I suggest going directly to the town, if you know it. the ancestry search does not always pull up anything.

Thank you for all that! I had most of it, but like you, I am trying to document it with census and birth, death, marriage records. The primary person I am trying to document is Lydia who was never born and never died, it look like. In one census record it she was born in Ct. and in other stuff it looks like she was born in Canada. If we could just figure out the town, it would be useful. We do have hard proof that Elizabeth was daughter of Simon and Anne, but not of Lydia. BTW, I am in the William/Henry/Joseph line of the Groats. Mary Forsythe in Canada has lots of information on Groat/Marsh and lots of it is documented. She posts on Ancestry.

Hi,
This is the history that has been repeated at our Canadian Reunions for many years, regarding the connection to Huntington, at least as far as our 4x's great grandmother Lydia Huntington who married William Groat.
Some family says her father is William Huntington, others claim Simon as her father.
There does not appear to be a birth date or place of birth document anywhere.
What we do know is that she married/ lived with William Groat. They had 5 children. Preston ,who married Lydia Marsh..Standish who married also a Lydia Marsh and 2nd Catharine Yorke...Henry who married Mary Demaray( our 3 x's great grandparents) Abial who married James Dryden...Christiana who married Caleb Brooks.
William Groat died in 1813, while Lydia was still pregnant with Christiana. (Story was that he never saw his youngest daughter.so we we're assuming she was pregnant)
In 1817 Lydia Huntington Groat married Samuel Munger and then she died in 1819,in Whitby/Pickering area. We have a record of this 2nd marriage.
Son Preston's obit says in part....Died 25 June 1883,in Memphis Michigan, nearly 80 yrs old. Born in Quebec, 10 July 1803 and became an orphan at the age of 7. In the 2nd yr of the war of 1812, then being only 10 yrs old, he entered the British Military service as a dispatch boy.(this obit was written by his grandson, but he could've been closer to age 8/9 when his father died or he was older when he joined the military)
The other point that is always made and I've read it in an old post on line as well, possibly by Florence Manning,I have to check on that.... that Jane Marsh, mother of Mary Demaray and Mary's husband Henry Groat, were 1st cousins. Also that Isreal Marsh, was also Henry's 1st cousin. We all know that Isreal Marsh was the son of William Marsh and Elizabeth Huntington. I may be wrong , but to me it looks like the only way that Henry, Jane and Isreal are all first cousins is by way of Elizabeth Huntington who married Rev.William Marsh and Lydia Huntington who married William Groat.
I know that Martin Peters thinks that Jane Marsh is the dau. of the older cousin William Marsh and Anne Huntington , but I feel this is still up in the air as none of us have birth records etc.,but they could still be 1st cousins if Anne is also a sister.
I have read old books, one says Elizabeth's father was William Huntington, the other says that it's Simon Huntington.
Old Family stories repeat that old father Huntington died in the United Sates and Elizabeth Huntington is referred to as Dau. of Mrs Huntington.
Rev.Israel Marsh in his Diary refers to old Aunt Huntington being buried Fri. 27 Dec 1844, wonder who he was referring to?
Just some of my tidbits, still need to find a lot of documentation.
I've been scouring the Druin collection, so far no records of the above mentioned names.
I came across William Groat's brother Joseph's marriages
in the St Armand area.
MaryP

Hi Everyone:
According to my information, Lydia Huntington (b. 1790 in Sutton, Quebec, Canada) was the daughter of Simon Huntington (b. 02 Dec 1740 in Mansfield, Tolland County, Connecticut and Amy Fuller (b. 24 Oct 1738 in Mansfield). People in our group of researchers have Lydia Huntington, daughter of Simon Huntington and Amy Fuller married to William Groat (b. 1771). Lydia Huntington and William Groat had 4 sons and 2 daughters.
Please let me know your research information with suggests that the Lydia Huntington, daughter of Caleb, might be the one we think was born to Simon Huntington, b. 1710.
I totally agree that the Huntington ancestry in Canada is so confusing. Just trying to help straighten the information.
Mary

They left New York in 1842 and in settled in Nauvoo, Ill. and later lived in Bountiful, Ut.
Elizabeth Huntington's lineage goes back to Gov. Samuel Huntington, a signer of the Declaration of Independance. I am quite sure this family does back to Pilgrim times and through the Revolutionary War. I would like to follow the Huntington family through the early times. But need a little guidance on how to proceed.

I'm looking for the family of Daniel L. Huntington who was in the Civil War and was a drummer boy. I believe he was born in Iowa about 1847. His father was born in Vermont and mother may have been born in New York.

Mr. Huntington was a neighbor of my grandparents in Muskegon, Michigan and I have a picture of him playing his drum which should be returned to his family. Please contact me if you think you are a family member of Daniel L. Huntington. Thank you Rosie

According to census reports she was born in Vermont. She lived also in Bracken Co, Ky and Clermont Co, Ohio.

I believe she may have descended from Simon Huntington.

If anyone has information to share or would like me to share what I have.

Hello Fellow Researcher,
My father's gg great grandmother is Elizabeth (HUNTINGTON)Buys (1813-1873) from New York. Her family lineage goes back to Samuel Huntington (1731-1796),Governor of Connecticut and a "Signer of the Declaration of Independence". ancestry.com states that my father's relationship to Samuel Huntington is 2nd cousin 6 times removed.
Last year I tried to separate the 10 trees I was working on and somehow lost several of my lineage lines. It looks like I will have to start again from my father's name and follow the family group sheets to locate our connection to Samuel Huntington again. I have historical narratives for two generations past Elizabeth (HUNTINGTON)Buys (1813-1873)that depict her many virtues and discuss her respectable Rev. War family & Pilgrim ancestors. If you are related to this line of the family, please contact me. The Establishment

You have most likely very long ago forwarded this family bible back to a family member, which is most commendable of you. But, if you by chance have not, I would die to have it as Elisabeth Huntington Chester and Col. John Chester were my great-great-great-great grandparents, and I am John Chester's present primogeniture representative in the Chester Family. Thanks very much and, in all events, I'd be interested in learning how the bible turned up?

Hello Renee,
I recently bought a darling baby photo identified as Tracy Huntington taken by Squyer Wright of Auburn, New York. It is dated April 12, 1879 aged 11 months, 14 days.

Does this child connect with any of your Auburn, NY Huntington folks?

I'm not related, but I would like to connect this photo with a family member or family researcher.

Sincerely,
Kathy@FamilyWeSearch.com

Can you give me any sites or locations to find birth, death, cemetery, wills, or Bible records for Amy Standish and Simon (b 1710)Huntington's information? I too am trying to find hard evidence for these. Also looking for Simon (b 1740) Huntington and Lydia Huntington Groat's vitals. I have only seen reference to them in family trees, but I need documentation. Mary Forsythe does have a letter that ties some of these together. But I would love to find the documentation to clear it all up.

Another source might be land records where a wife is mentioned. In 19th century records in Ohio, I found a whole branch of relatives through land tax records, when parents gave daughters some land and all the relationships were right there! I don't know if it would work so early as 17th and 18th centuries because land ownership by women was much more constrained.
But I am in Virginia and it's quite a trek up there to CT, Quebec, MI, and Ontario.

I have it as Amy Standish and Simon Huntington, parents of Lydia Huntington who married William Groat. I am not sure where this information came from. I am trying to find a firm link between Lydia and Simon and Amy, so my info may be suspect.

I have found several trees listing george huntington and anne fenwick as samuel's parents. But the dob given make george just 2 years old at the time of samuels birth and anne not born for another 15 years! Any thoughts?
