Charles Hurst

I have just started researching the Hurst family in England and have Charles Hurst in a defacto relationship with Charlotte Thurlby. There is no record of a marriage and their son uses his mother's surname.Charles was born 1794 in Wragby, Lincolnshire, and his father was William Hurst, married to Elizabeth. I can fnd no other details for any of this family.Although I have no idea what their occupations were, I think they would have lived and died in the Wragby area. Any help would be appreciated so I can progress.

Hi,

My name is Steve Patterson and I am researching the ancestry for a friend of mine. Her name is Elizabeth Clodfelter and her mother is a descendant of the John Millcreek Hurst family. Her mother is Virginia Ann Padgett (5/25/1943 – present) Born, raised and still living in Greencastle, IN, Grandparents were William Robert Padgett (9/18/1910 – 9/23/2001) and Virginia Pauline Hurst (12/30/1914 – 7/7/1963), Great Grandparents Paul Hurst (4/30/1879 – 8/3/1946)and Gertrude Cooper (2/22/1880 - 1966), Great-Great Grandparents Martin C. Hurst (3/15/1846 – 2/4/1899)and Virginia Caroline Gose (2/22/1842 – 9/11/1927), Great-Great-Great Grandparents Jefferson Hurst (3/28/1824 – 9/19/1888) and Elizabeth Vowell (born 1824; Martin’s mother) and Elza Hurst (2/15/1824 – 11/2/1879), and Great-Great-Great-Great Grandparents Wiliam Hurst (7/10/1796 – 10/8/1849)and Fanny Nunn (born about 1790 – 4/20/1873). I would be interested in getting a copy or a photo copy of the "Hursts of Shenandoah" is at all possible, as it will help me immensely in researching Beth's family. Thanks you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Steve
email: patterss@ohio.edu
I don't have info on your Great Grandmother, but may be able to add another piece to your family ancestry. My Great Great Grandfather Joseph Mabe had a brother named James M Mabe who married Dizanna Hurst, daughter of William Hurst and Carrie Hall. Dizanna is listed in the 1900 Benton County, Mo Census living with her son-in law, Joseph Howard. She died August 4, 1920 in Henry County, MO.

Location: Jackson Twp., Harrison Co., IN

The Hursttown School and Church were both located down in the valley at Hursttown, at the corner where the road turns toward Crandall. The school house burned the winter of 1866-1867 and the teacher Preston Davis, finished the school in the church (Whitten’s Chapel).
The territorial capitol of Indiana was originally Vincennes, created in 1800, and remained so for 13 years. It was relocated to Corydon, in Harrison County, after the start of the War of 1812. William Henry Harrison, 1st Indiana Governor and 9th President of the US, had founded and named the town of Corydon, had a home there, and supported the move of the Territorial Capitol there. The Indiana Constitutional Convention was held there in 1806.

There is a story about the early Hurst family related to the relocation of the Territorial Capitol to Corydon. Harrison County Sheriff John Hurst and one of his sons was sent to Vincennes to move records and books to Corydon. On the way back to Corydon the wagon was upset in a river and there was a loss of records. I don't know anything further about the loss.

Spier Spencer and wife, Elizabeth Polk, relocated from Vincennes to Corydon, when he was appointed the first Sheriff of Harrison County, in 1809. He continued as Sheriff, until he was killed during the Battle of Tippecanoe during the War of 1812. The Harrison County Militia, also known as the "Yellow Jackets", was organized when the tensions between the settlers and the Indians worsened. There is a book, "The Battle of Tippecanoe", by Reed Beard, that gives a "Roll of Capt. Spier Spencer's Company of Mounted Riflemen of the Indiana Militia from September 12 to November 23, 1811", in Chapter XI, on page 103 and 104. It has been digitized on books.google.com, and might be interesting to you.

Spencer may have been in Vincennes very early. But the militia unit her headed was organized and based in Harrison County. There are some voting records for Harrison County from about 1809, two years prior to the battle, and also some enlistment records for the unit itself; transcriptions of these are found in the "Indiana Sourcebook" series.

I'll try to make time to hit the library this week, and at very least, get those Dunn Family Bible register transcriptions photocopied.

Daniel & Rhoda Dunn are parents of Levi Dunn b. 1785 (md to Elizabeth Hurst) and Mary Polly Dunn b. 1783 (md to Abraham Hurst), thus Levi and Mary Polly were brother/sister.

from source I have James Willis b. 28 Jan 1817 and died 1911 in Walker Co., GA. But book says d. 1890...hummm, wonder why the descrepancy?
His brother Daniel C Dunn was born 12 Jun 1820 the date you list for James Willis Dunn.
Looking at the "Connection" in East TN on pg 148 and 149 it states Levi Dunn Sr had a daughter Elizabeth b. 1812 listed among 12 siblings in the "Dunn Bible Record". Says the Bible is dim and very hard to read. The numbers are very hard to distinguish.

Since Elizabeth md in in 1828 in Blount TN, her father is most likely one of the Dunns in 1830 Blount who are Daniel Dunn, Wm Dunn (younger brothers of Levi), Levi Dunn (husband of Elizabeth Huerst & father of Elizabeth), Isabella Dunn (possibly a sister-in-law whose husband is dec'd bef 1830...possibly James Dunn b. 1797 & d. 1821).

Is it possible that Elizabeth perhaps "thought" she was born on banks of Wabash? I searched Spier Spencer and found that he resided in Vincennes, IN which is near/on Wabash and the battle of Tippeconoe was north of Wabash River & county in northern IN.

Checking my database again, I directly quote Elizabeth (from the typed-in excerpts from Edwards & Frizzell that were sent to me a lifetime ago) saying she was born on the banks of the "Watash"; however, that has to be the Wabash, the Wenatchee and the Wasatch are way out west (thinking, what else might "Watash" sound like?).

Below is a dump of the descendants of Nick & Liz; the source notes used are:

Hurst Descendancy from Hurst Heritage Web Page; Joan Hurst Lundy-Boyd
The Connection in East Tennessee; Olga Edwards and Izora Frizzell;
Hurst and Allied Families; John Simeon Hurst;
1880 U.S. Census; Catoosa County, Georgia; Wood Station; Page 206A
1880 U.S. Census; Jackson County, Missouri; Lake City, Fort Osage Township; Page 102C

1. Elizabeth: This woman claimed to have been born on the banks of 'Watash", in Indiana. Since her name does not appear in the Dunn Family Bible, I'm inclined to think she was correct. There was a Dunn family in Knox County IN in the early days, relation to ours, unknown. However, it is quite certain that our Dunns never lived on the banks of the "Ouabache" River in Indiana. However, Ezra Stonecypher has her born in Harrison Co., IN. That would have been on the banks of Big Indian Creek. She reports IN every time.
Children:
2.	i	Levi D.
I was looking at the map, trying to determine the extent of the Wabash river, and it looked like it was a tributary of the Wabash that ran up through northern Indiana, and not the river itself, BUT, the map wasn't showing me names there even when i zoomed in. I shouldn't trust technology so much, but I don't have a paper map here with me.

Also, although it was staring me in the face, not until this morning's coffee did I notice that Mary "Polly" Dunn who married Abraham Hurst was the daughter of Daniel Dunn and Rhoda maiden-name-unknown. It seems likely that Daniel and Levi were related, but I don't show a relation in my database. My paper notes are not currently available to me, and may be lost forever (I'm in foreclosure and locked out of my own home).

And now that you reminded me who Elizabeth Ann Dunn married, I see I do in fact still have her, I just broke the link from her to Levi.

I recall seeing the two James Willis Dunns in the transcription of the Dunn Family Bible, but I include only the one b. 12-Jun-1820 and who d. about 1890 in Walker Co., GA. (he married Narcissa Hill), as Levi's son. My impression was that the original family register may have included names that weren't Levi & Elizabeth's, but since no one seems to know where the original has gotten to, we're limited to what we can derive from the transcription.

Someone asked me not long ago for a copy of the transcribed family register from the Dunn Family Bible; next trip to the library, I'll be sure to make new photocopies and scan them so interested parties can make their own determinations.

My data is available on the web at:

http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=family...

(that link points directly to Elizabeth Hurst).
Thanks for the info.

I made a mistake in "assuming" the Wabash River only ran through Wabash County as there is a Wabash that runs through the county. Thus I assumed Elizabeth was born in present day Wabash County. One should never ASSUME. The Wabash River starts from the Ohio River running up/north along the IN/IL line then runs toward Terre Haute then again north and notheast through Lafayette then the river narrows running northeast through Logansport then running east toward and through Wabash County.
So Elizabeth could have been born in any county where the Wabash River runs through.

At this point I am questioning the father of Elizabeth Dunn if indeed she was born on the Wabash (nowhere near Harrison Co) while alleged father Levi Dunn resided in Harrison County.

Elizabeth Dunn md Nicholas Brewer in 1828 Blount Co., TN and they are on the Blount Co., 1850 Census.

She appears as a Brower in 1880 with son Alexander "Brower" and husband "Nickless"

While Elizabeth was b. 1812 her sister Polly was b. 1810 and after Elizabeth was a James Willis Dunn b. 1817 (5 yrs apart), then Wm B Dunn b. 1818.

Levi Dunn enlisted in Spier Spencer's militia unit, the Yellowjackets, in Harrison Co., Indiana, and travelled with the unit on their way to the Battle of Tippecanoe, but then decided to return back to his family in Harrison County. Not long afterward, he left Indiana for Tennessee.

There were some other Dunns, as well as some Hursts (among them was the lawyer, Henry Hurst), in Vincennes, Indiana, as early as 1803, and it sits right on the banks of the Wabash River. However, the river does not run up to Wabash County.

BTW, another researcher years ago (1996) sent me that quote along with a bunch of info taken from "The Connection in East Tennessee", by Olga Edwards and Izora Frizzell. but my inability to resolve this dilemma led me to remove Elizabeth Ann Dunn from my database. Removing her doesn't solve anything though, and leaves a large gap of years between Polly's 1810 birth, and "Short Bill"'s birth in 1818.

If there is an unbroken line of female descendants from Elizabeth Ann Dunn to the present, and an unbroken line of female descendants from one of Elizabeth Hurst's other daughters, then a mitochondrial DNA test would confirm or refute the relationship.

Yes, Mary "Polly" Dunn (3-Sep-1783 to 18-May-1848) married Abraham Hurst and left many descendants down to today, one of whom I've met, a few others of which I've corresponded with.

You mention census info on Elizabeth Ann Dunn... I know that in 1850, a few scattered counties of some states recorded not only the state of the person's birth, but also the county. Was this the case for Elizabeth? I'd forgotten who she married (hmm, I do have some old backups of the database I could check), so I wouldn't know who to look for in the 1850 census.

I am a descendant of Elizabeth Hurt and Levi Dunns daughter Elizabeth Ann Dunn b. 12 Jul 1812 on "the banks of Wabash" in IN.

Apparently Levi Dunn went to IN with Cap John Hurst. Levi Dunn was in IN by Feb 1807 when his 2nd daughter Rhoda was born and remained in IN in 1812 when Elizabeth was born and back to TN by Jan 1817 when son John was born.

It does seem odd that Elizabeth Dunn (according to census info) born in what is now Wabash Co., IN located northern part of state while Capt John Hurst himself settled in southern part of IN near KY. It seems odd that the Dunn would have moved/resided further north away from his inlaws/Hurst family.

Levi Dunn had a sister Mary Dunn b. 1783 and died 1848 in Perry Co., IN.

Hi,

Prisella, Absalom, Landon, Nathaniel and probably George were children of Thomas and Mary, not John and Jane. The late Gwen Hurst said that Thomas was not mentioned in John's will because he had already been provided for; he was still living in Stafford when John died, while the others had probably moved. William "Brindle Bill" was also not mentioned. Those mentioned were John, who had to sign off as the oldest son, and the younger children. The Y-DNA testing shows that the descendants of Thomas and Brindle Bill match.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.
However, in John's (of Stafford VA) will (dated 1747) he mentions children: Henry, James, Mary, and John.
He does not mention Priscella Elizabeth, Absolum, Landon, Nathaniel, or George in his will. What evidence is there to support that these are additional children of John & Jane.

Re: "Capt" John Hurst appointment as Lieutenant

Elijah Hurst died 13 September 1856, that's the date I saw on his headstone.

Leah Hurst Lindsey was still living with her son John in Crawford County, Indiana, in 1870; her descendant Thomas Weathers provided me with the 1873 date of death. I have not been able to locate her grave.

Abraham Hurst was and is a dilemma. I found the 1872 death date in "Perry County, Indiana, Tombstone Inscriptions, Volume 1: Troy Township" (Patmore & Manley). He is buried in the Troy Cemetery. But here's my thinking from over 10 years ago, from my unpublished manuscript:

Nick Bush had annotated his copy of Clara Hurst Miles' "Hurst Genealogy" next to Abraham's name with the message "m. 1st 1811 m. 2nd 1840". Perry C. Hurst says Abe was so old "he didn't know his own children." Abe's headstone says he was from Culpeper Co., but the Capt. John Hurst migrations didn’t stop there, so Abe must have been born in Shenandoah Co., unless his birth date is not correct (or this is another Abraham Hurst!). His nephew, Elijah Hurst, son of Beverly, said he died at age 86 in 1850 or 1856. If so, who is the Abram Hurst found in Spencer County, Indiana, in 1850, age 73, who is the Abraham Hirst age 80 in Spencer County in 1860, and who is the Abraham Hurst age 94 in Perry County in 1870? I have yet to account for all 20 of his children that appear in the 1810 through 1840 censuses, or to completely reconcile the two conflicting lists of his children (for example, I cannot locate the daughter Jane that is on at least one of the lists, nor the Susan, unless she is the Susan Hurst who appears in the 1840 Dubois Co. census).

Mary: In the copy of Clara Miles' "Hurst Genealogy" given to me by my nephew, Nick Bush, he annotated Mary's entry with the dates July 3, 1783 - Dec 31, 1829. However, this date of death seems wrong, as a woman of Mary's approximate age is present in Abraham's household in the 1830 Harrison County census. Also, ‘Sheriff’ John Hurst purchased land from Abraham and “his wife, Polly” on 15 August 1831. So she must have still been alive. Perhaps Nick mistranscribed the date as 1829, where it was actually supposed to be 1839.

Final supporting evidence of Polly living beyond 1829 takes the form of the Dunn Family Bible, which states that Mary Dunn died on May 18, 1848. One possibility, then, is that the 1829/1839 date is a date of Abe and Mary's divorce.

A second possiblity is that Abe separated from Mary, but did not divorce her, and thus was engaging in a dangerous little two-step when he married Gabriella Evans in 1842. Although it's doubtful that people would have recorded the date of an estrangement back in
those days.

A third possibility is one that I keep coming back to: that there are two men named Abraham Hurst, and they each married a Mary Dunn (I am not, however, confusing the Abram Hurst of the Putnam County branch with "our" Abe). Why else would Abe not have been able to recognize his own children? Perhaps because some of them that came around had found the wrong Abraham Hurst! In support of this theory, one of Abe’s nieces (a supposed daughter of sister Elizabeth and her husband Levi Dunn) recalled growing up on “the banks of the Wabash”. None of Capt. John Hurst's descendants lived on the Wabash prior to Levi Dunn moving the family back down to Tennessee.

Re: Capt John Hurst

Indeed, Joseph! From my unpublished "manuscript" on the Descendants of John Hurst":

Somewhere along the line, Lt. John Hurst has become known as "Capt. John" Hurst. Some have supposed that this was due to his service in the Shenandoah militia, assuming that he received some "field-upgrade" of his rank which was not recorded. In "Hursts of Shenandoah" (by J. C. Hurst), on page 7, the author suggests this possibility. In another
text, "Hurst and Allied Families" by John Simeon Hurst (compiled after his death by his sister), we read on page 3 that "Among those who fought in the Revolutionary War was Captain John Hurst, who was captured and held prisoner on Long Island in 1776. He was the first son of William (Brindle Will) Hurst." Unfortunately, on page 32, amidst a group of unconnected facts, we find "Capt. Hurst, Conn. [Connecticut? Continental?], captured by the British at Long Island, August 27, 1776." [Long Island, NY, or Long Island in the New River?]

If the source of this second reference is also the original source of John's "elevation" to the rank of Captain, then I think a mistake has been made, which may be too late to correct, even with this analysis. However, the record of the Long Island prisoner may not have been the source of this moniker.

In one of the narratives he wrote in the early part of the 20th century, Benjamin Franklin Hurst referred to John as a captain, his family as an army, and described how John "now 71, marshalled his forces and crossed the Ohio River." Possibly, Ben was merely engaging in hyperbole. Or, perhaps John had, indeed, been called "Capt. John" during his life.

After leaving Virginia, John settled and lived in Greene County, Tennessee, for about ten years. We find several references to a John Hurst in GREENE COUNTY TENNESSEE MINUTES OF THE COURT OF COMMON PLEAS, 1797 - 1807, (Houston). While some of these references definitely
occur during his known stay in Greene Co., others clearly occur after John had left. For example, he is called to jury duty, does not appear, and is subject to a fine unless he can show good cause for having not answered the summons. Let us hope that having moved away should constitute good cause.

For purposes of taxation, Greene County was divided into what were called "Captain's Districts." In the aforementioned text, on page 213, we find the following in the section "Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions 1805 - 1807, State of Tennessee":

The Court have appointed the following Justices to receive lists of the taxable property and polls in the following Captain's Districts, for the succeeding year towit

...
John Gragg in Capt. Hurst's district

By the time this entry was recorded in the Greene County record books, John had left. However, with daily living taking precedence over other things in the life of pioneers, it's easily conceivable that the authorities had failed to appoint a new Captain for what had been John Hurst's district until the date of the quoted entry. It is also
possible, however, that one of John's sons was the captain of this district (for example, we know that his son, Elijah, was married in Greene County, and the earliest we can place Elijah in Indiana is 1807; likewise, at least one of the children of his son William were born in Tennessee).

With some additional study of Greene County records, this question might easily be resolved. However, for the time being, we can simply continue to call him Capt. John without too much worry. Besides, we have to have some way to distinguish him from all the other John Hursts!

Unfortunately, I do not know which set of Hursts my family comes from. The first place I find them are in Dorchester County, MD in mid 1700's. That is as far as I have them documented. Is there anyone on this list now who is related to the Levi James Hurst/Sophia Badley line of Hursts? I would be most interested in connecting. Have been trying to get my brother to DNA test....
