I am also researching the lineage of William White and Jane Huston and looking for any leads.

I am a descendent of their daughter Elizabeth White (b.1736 in Lancaster Co., PA), who married in 1758 Capt. John Slaymaker.

Thanks!

Grandparents of U.S. Treas. Sec. James Nelson Huston?

I’ve hit a wall with my 3rd great grandmother, Isabella Huston, who married Thomas McKinstry in 1822 in Franklin Co. Pennsylvania and need some help from knowledgeable Huston experts. She was a sister of William Huston, b. 1801, and the aunt of James Nelson Huston, U.S. Sec. of the Treasury under Pres. Harrison. I've identified an additional sibling as well, their brother James. But who were their parents? The trail of evidence I have is the following:

1. Thomas McKinstry’s death certificate gives his wife’s name as Isabella.

2. Thomas’s grandson reported that her name was Isabella Huston, was born in Franklin County PA, and that she was the sister of the father of James Nelson Huston, Legislator, Congressman from Indiana, and Sec. of the Treasury under Benjamin Harrison.

3. Mercersburg PA Presbyterian church records (Franklin Co.) show the marriage of Isabella Huston to Thomas McKinstry in 1822, and her death on Nov. 14, 1848 at age 55, so she was born about 1793.

4. The father of James Nelson Huston, who was born in Greencastle, Franklin Co. PA about 1849, was William Huston, b. 1801 in Pennsylvania, and moved to Connersville IN in 1851. (Wikipedia)

5. “The History of Fayette County Indiana” in the section on James Nelson Huston says that his father William Huston was born Sep. 3, 1801 in Franklin County PA, and married Isabella E. Duncan. They moved to Indiana in 1851, where he was in the milling business with his brother James in both Pennsylvania and Connersville Indiana, and they did quite well. William died Jan 5, 1875.

6. The 1860 Fed. Census finds James Huston, 60, flour merchant, his brother William Huston, 58, flour merchant, and Nelson Huston 10, all staying at a hotel in Fayetteville IN, showing William's business relationship with his brother James, the presence of son Nelson, and we learn that brother James is about 2 years older than William.

Piecing this information together we have 3 Huston siblings from Franklin Co. PA:
1. Isabella, b. abt. 1793, married Thomas McKinstry in 1822, d. Nov. 14, 1848 in Franklin Co.
2. James, b. abt. 1799, (about 2 years older than brother William.), d. (?)
3. William, b. Sep. 3, 1801 in Franklin Co. PA, d. Jan. 5, 1875.

Who were the parents of these three? Is there an existing Huston family tree where they fit?

Using 1800 Census records, there appear to be two candidates in Franklin Co.: a James Huston in Montgomery Township with children in the right age groups, and also owning 6 slaves, and a William Huston in Letterkenny Township with children in the right age groups.

It is hard to believe that the grandparents of a U.S. Sec. of the Treasury would be unknown.

Thanks, and any help would be greatly appreciated.
The Smilie that you are looking for was a daughter of John Robert Smilie born in Ireland in 1742. He came to U.S. in 1762 and settled in Pa. He was a Congressman and died while serving there on Dec 29, 1812. He is buried in the Congressional Cemetery. There is a lot of information about him through his political connections. He married Jane Porter. They had three children. Robert Porter Smilie, Jane who married William Craig, and Mary who married Joseph Huston. The information that I have says that Mary died in 1799.

As I read it, it wasn't as much of a town as it was a keep, aka "ton." I've read that in a couple of places, but right now I can't think of a single reference.

As far as I've been able to research, there were several branches of the MacDonald clan because it had grown so large. There are more than 20 individual tartans registered to this clan. We're descended from the MacDonald's of Sleat, a penninsula on the eastern coast of Scotland.

Kelli Karns

Gene, it has been some time since I read about this. I believe I read it on the web site, www.electricscotland.com

The different clans in Scotland, Ireland, etc., have what is known as a 'sept,' which I understand to be a branch of the family tree. The MacDonald Clan was very rich and powerful. There was a son named HUGH. The head of the MacDonald Clan gave Hugh a town. It was called HUGH'S TOWN. From what I have read, this is where the name HUSTON came from. The Huston/Houston(s) are the 'sept' of the MacDonald Clan.

Go to this web site and you will find more information that will be a help to your research. Also, ask at your local library about books on the Huston/Houston name.

I wish you good fortune in your research.....MargeIsrael@aol.com

I'm attempting to reach my Uncle Conrad Huston in Ontario, WI. to see if he has any info.

I could really kick myself 'you know where. When I attended my mother's funeral in 1990,
I was only home for a short time (on active duty then) and my mind wasn't really with me. There were many relatives there that I didn't know and didn't get a chance to talk with. I really think that I blew it. As soon as I get some info, I'll get in touch with you. This family had a nursing home in Hamden area I believe; and it is still operating under the guidense of this couples descendents. Is this the same Harvey you are seeking? If so, a Michael Huston that has posted here has a TON of info on this family. Good luck. My e address is breezy@tusco.net

I have a family portrait plus some individual pictures.
Bill Hurle is the son or grandson of Edna (I believe), I met him in Clearfield PA and he promised to get back to me with info., he never did.
I also have a photo of Ora Huston and my father Emory Becton in WVA, I don't have a date but I believe my father was in his teens.

I am not understanding the Huston line as it is presented in your message. Also, I do not recognize the names you have presented with the possible exception of Mabel. I have a Mabel Huston in my Huston research as the daughter of John & Cathryn (Clark) Huston. Is this the same person?

Who is Bill Hurle? I don't know that name.

I will be sending a message from don48@juno.com to your yahoo email in the next few days. I will have more to say when I compose that email.

Don

Emory Huston was the son of Almanzon Huston.
I believe Emory's middle name was Sterling.
He is buried in the cemetary in Nacogdoches.
Is this the Emory you are talking about? If
so, his mother's name was Elizabeth Newton.
She is buried in the Old City Cemetery in
Alto, Texas. It is important to know that
the older Col. Almanzon had a son named Almanzon
and the son of Col. Almanzon named Newton had
a son named Almanzon. My husband descends
from Col. Almanzon, Newton, Almanzon, Paul.

Hope this helps you.

Can someone help me to connect my Hustons to
Almanzon? Emery Huston's wife was Laura
Nelson. Their son Clarence Francis Huston
born in 1893 married Jennie Dunkleberger in
1915 in Berrien Co., Michigan. I'm missing
one or two generations.
Bonnie
